Just started cross stitching and have completed almost all of my first project using a kit. Everything for the project was supplied I.e the fabric, needle, the pattern and the 5 threads. I made a mistake early on and used the wrong colour thread for a particular block. Rather than correct the mistake, I carried on only to find that I didn’t have enough of the correct colour to finish the project in all the specified colours. The threads supplied with the kit were not identified in terms of, e.g DMC or Anchor and colour codes, so I went to my local craft store ( which stocks DMC threads) and tried to find a colour match. I’m not sure who is in charge of the colour coding at DMC, but was amazed to find at my store that the green threads, for example, have colour codes that seem to be randomly scattered throughout the range. Why didn’t DMC group all the green threads in the range , say, 850 to 870, and if more than 20 green colours are produced then simply add an extra digit, in this case 8500 to 8700 to cope with the extra colours. If more than 200 green shades are produced then add another digit, 85000 to 87000, etc. This scheme would allow new colours to be easily added and old colours to be removed without reusing existing codes.

No one knows why DMC did their colour codes the way they did, but their actual printed colour chart is grouped into colour families so that makes it easier to work from if you're designing or replacing colours. It's a very old company, I believe over 400 years old, so there may have been reasons for colours being given those numbers. 🙂

I am look on how I can find out the number for my cross stitch thread. They have no number on them

Hi Joyce! If you know the brand, the only way to do that is to either go to a shop and compare them to the floss that's for sale (and bring tags or something so you can tag your floss), or buy a colour chart that uses real floss. In this tutorial I show a printed one, but the colours aren't 100% accurate to the actual floss colours. So you'd need to get a real floss chart, DMC sells them on their site. 🙂

Hello! I hope you could help me, I've been wondering if theres like a rule or a guide to pick the DMC colors for a project that I don`t have the actual color guide for... like, I'm making a flower that comes in 4 tones of pink, a very dark one, two different medium pinks and a very light one, how can I choose these four colors and be sure that they are going to look coordinated or give the right effect, so they dont look like I just force the colors there...

Hi Sue! Unfortunately the only way to really do that and be 100% happy with the colours is to look at real floss colours (whether that's in the shop or using a floss card). Even the printed floss cards aren't as helpful as you would think as the colours vary from the actual floss when you hold them side by side. You can choose any colours you like, it depends on what looks good to you. Colour theory is great (like I use a lot of complementary colours in my art), it helps you really develop an eye for interesting colour combinations. But no, there are no real rules to picking the floss colours other than choosing what looks good to you for the project you're working on. :)

Peacock & Fig ohh well. thank you very much for your answer. At least I can be more confident that I'm doing what I can correctly. I've been cross stitching since I was 15 more less but because I really never had an expert teacher I'm still learning tricks and some rules...
@peacockandfig
@peacockandfig 7 лет назад
Haha yes, you are doing it "right," you can get charts online from DMC that show you the colours, but it's hard to be 100% sure of the tones unless you have the floss in front of you. Like I like cool vivid tones, so if I had to choose 4 pinks one option would be 3831 for your dark, 961 and 3716 for your mediums, and 963 or 818 as your very pale. 🙂

Peacock & Fig hello again. I just wanted to say thank you, I did follow your suggestion of the colors. I didn't have all of them but I look for similar ones. the flower turn out very beautiful. it might sound silly but I don't have anyone to talk about the cross stitch, so I feel I kind of find a companion in the cross stitching life... thank you again!

You're very welcome Sue! And if you're on Facebook there are a ton of cross stitching groups, it's so easy to make stitchy friends from all around the world. Some bigger groups are Cross Stitch Addicts, the World of Cross Stitching, Cross Stitch it's Fun..... 🙂

Nice! My thread book like yours does not have the threads included. Even in the USA the ones with thread attached are about $50+ and just ridiculous. I wish the craft stores would at least stock a couple of them at the sewing pattern books table. It's always a lot of strain as you get older to crouch down near the floor poring over the floss on the racks. Being able to take notes and see the actual thread while comfortably sitting would be nice. I think I'll use your swatch idea here with my existing book but also thread a real string alongside?? We'll see. Something like this would be great and allow a lot more light exposure on each color spectrum choice. Thank You.

Actually I'm not sure where you're seeing the colour cards withe the real floss for $50 in the US, but that's way overpriced -- you can buy them direct from DMC for $24.99 USD. www.dmc.com/us/color-card-35-new-colors-9004428.html 🙂

Wish DMC still made the color chart with the actual threads.

You can actually get them, just not easily in Canada. Commonthread.us is DMC's US shopping site, and they have them for $25 US. But if you're ordering from outside the US they tack on another $25 "Canadian" fee, plus your shipping and exchange rate. I actually got an older one (from 2009, so not the most up to date one) from sewandso.co.uk for around $28 Canadian. Their online shop is great, I got quite a few things while I was at it like coaster blanks for the designs I was working on, etc. You can see those in use in the French Poppy Coaster listing in my new Adorned Life Collection section on my website. :) I really like sewandso, they've got a lot of selection and even with shipping, it's not that expensive. :)

You'll have to do your own search Ajay, I don't know where you are and what availability there might be. I'd recommend getting the real floss version rather than the printed version, the colours in the printed version are good but the real floss is obviously more accurate. You should be able to buy both versions from DMC's website, if they're in stock. 🙂
