Bless his heart, DMX was one of my favorites during this time. This song is so brave and honest, but so sad to hear it now knowing what's happened since. "Slippin" refers to his notorious and decades-long drug addiction. Unfortunately it seems to be the battle of his life and I pray he's doing well, but man this guy has so much lyrical talent!!

This is his life story. He mom beat him and sent him to boys homes. He ran the streets at young age made friends with stray dogs and that was basically his only friends growing up. He got bad on coke and shit and been in and out jail. That’s pretty much his life story.

This is the best DMX song. The story is true, and it's really sad honestly.. bc in a lot of ways his life has gone back to a lot of the negative. Also, the first verse ends talking about his dog was the only one he'd hit off with his last.. when you listen to DMX, every single song has dogs involved.. his whole persona has dogs involved. It's kinda tragic to think that the reason he loves dogs so much, is because the people in his life at a young age were so disappointing to him. The most recent time he went to jail, he played this song for the judge in hopes of getting a light sentencing.. probation something like that. Which I think is smart bc it really gets into why he is how he is. Judge still gave him time.. bc.. that's the criminal justice system here.. but yeah. This song is powerful.

If you can find his "behind the music" it's a good biography. Bro was beaten by his mother and her subsequent boyfriends, even knocking out his teeth. That's when he mentions going off on his own. This is most definitely a true story. I've watched a few of your reactions man, much respect. I'm 42, this is my generations hip hop. Its good to see some of the younger generation checkin out the golden age of the culture. Something you should keep in mind when you listen to this era is the stories are real. These guys came from the streets, DMX, Pac, Snoop, Wu-Tang, Biggie, the list goes on and on. These guys are responsible for showing the world what was going on in the streets. They put a mirror in Americas face and made us take a long, hard look at ourselves. They spoke from experience and pain and thats what makes it beautiful. They were telling the next generation that they dont have to live that way. It got spun into glorifying gang and drug life and thats not what it was at all, it was the exact opposite. It was story telling at its best, poetry of the highest level in my opinion. Some of the realest music ever made, glad to see you enjoying it and giving it the respect it deserves. Too many of these young cats disrespect this era, they dont realize that this IS hip hop. Its not just music, its a culture, a culture of struggle, sacrifice, hard work, art and most importantly, perseverence.

Nah man. Dmx went through it all his life is like a movie. He got laced when he was 14 with crack cocaine and it copletely turned him out. His momma was exrtemely abusive to him as a child. He had it extremely rough. Unfortunately crack cocaine is something that stays with you forever and he kept relapsing...yet still become one of the best to ever do it. God Bless the Dead.
