Do Animals have Souls? - Why Humans and Animals are Different

Animals do not have free will in the same way humans do therefore do not choose to love freely in the same way humans do. Only humans have rational Souls capable of communicating with their creator and having a relationship with him.

@@CatholicTruthOfficial Maybe I'm missing something, but when I hear "choose to love freely" I understand it to mean something like "I don't have to love you, but I do anyway and will show you with loving kindness." That's exactly what animals do. Anybody who is in tune with a dog, cat, horse, etc. understands what I'm talking about. Whether they also have a relationship with God, I can't say either way. I just don't know. With their loving souls, however, I certainly couldn't rule that out.

Reincarnation is a pagan and distinctly heretical belief. We will be resurrected, i.e. we will die, and then live again, forever. There is no samsara within Christianity. As for whether they have souls, we cannot know; but they are conscious, and have distinct personalities. They are obviously unique individuals. They also, to my understanding, are incapable of sin; they always follow God's perfect will, because they are unable not to. Seeing as humans are saved by denying our corrupt human nature to live in harmony with God's will, there exists a parallel between how we are granted our salvation and the lives of animals.

What you just described is the concept of reincarnation. That is a concept found in Hinduism, not in Christianity.

Think about this for a moment: there are millions of babies who die every year when they are like 1 year old. Before they could even learn their own name. Before they could develop their own personality. What happens to them? They go to heaven and live with the faculties of a 1 year old forever?

Animals existed before humans. They are just as much a soul as we are. Animals are just less intelligent. That doesn't make them less than us. This is the issue with humans. We feel our lives are more valuable than anyone else.

Not all of God's creatures have free will. Only human beings have free will. That's why they alone are able to enter into a relationship with God in a special way. We don't know for sure whether other creatures go to heaven, but they definitely don't have free will.

@@nicetightsize8jeans think about it. When a human does something, we hold him fully accountable unless, in rare instances, he really did not understand what he was doing. His free will was taken away by not understanding what was going on. Do we not do the same with animals? If a dog mauls a newborn to death, we dont hold the dog fully responsible, because he does not understand what is going on. Therefore he did not really have free will, or a soul. He was mostly acting on instincts, not intellect. The difference is that that is the normal state for animals, but only a few humans are in that state. Its not the normal state for a human to not understand what he is doing.

@Drake Cassell no, they dont. That doesnt sound like a normal human to me. That human sounds like they would need to be under supervision, because, like an animal, they are not capable of understanding what is going on, and then acting appropriately according to their free will.

It's not that they don't have souls, they do, it's just they don't have the same kind of rational Souls as humans. Souls that are capable of communion and relationship with their creator.

I believe animals can sense the supernatural because they have done nothing wrong to sin in this world. They have morals and always respect them , they don't go against the laws of nature.

Hello Wolf, thanks for your comment. The principle of life is the soul. Animals and plants have souls since they are living things, but not in the same way that humans do. Our souls are rational whereas theirs are not, and ours are rational because they are spiritual rather than material. And you even confessed that by describing how they can't grasp patterns and so forth. We are elevated above animals because God made us in His image, whereas animals were not. Animals and plants are incapable of doing anything that goes beyond the constraints of matter. Although some animals appear to be intelligent, they do not have conceptional intelligence. He is referring to human ability to reason with God's given wisdom and not intelligence for survival as what animals have. But your also right in a way because those crows are living out the way God made them to be and we are not thats why we seem to look less intelligent and they may seem wiser.

babies and young children are early in their development. Most, except for a few sociopaths, will develop the ability to use their conscience, around the age of 4 or 5. Animals never do. Im not sure about all animals, but most, including dogs and cats, do not feel guilt, therefore dont have a conscience, and therefore dont have the ability to love. Only humans do. Time is not a construct created by man. We have created ways to measure it, but we didnt create it. We still dont fully understand time. (we would, if we created it)

Animals have souls, they are just not rational souls that humans have which are capable of relationship with God. So they have souls, but they are different.

The Catholic Church teaches that they have souls also. Just a different type. They don't have rational Souls as humans do capable of being in relationship with their creator as humans do. They also don't have some of the rationality that humans have.

I hope to God that He allows us to meet again all those we have loved and cherished both human and our beloved pets, the gorgeous birds I watch and listen to every day and the like. We shall find out someday provided we die in a state of grace. It's unfortunate the Lord didn't share the answer while He walked among us, a mystery of faith. I shall pray to St. Francis for it to be so! :)

The dignity that humans have is inherent in their Humanity, even though many humans do not act in accord with that dignity or live up to that dignity. The dignity comes from being children of God and eternal Sons and Daughters of the most high.

i see what you are saying, but, when you think about it, its not that animals are soulless in a bad way, its just how they are. they simply live, and dont have the vision or capability or thought for anything else. Its not that theyre bad, or that all humans are good. Yes, some humans are bad, but we have the ability to think about what we are doing, and to evolve and grow. Now, think about how bears were living a few hundred years ago, what clothes they were wearing, what music they were listening to...and how they are living now: exactly the same. Animals are not evolving or thinking about how they live, good or bad. If a crime was happening in front of a group of animals, they would not notice or care. Its just how they are. A tree wouldnt notice, either, and i love and adore trees. Humans are the only ones on a learning path. Be happy you are a human, and can self reflect. Animals cant.

In other words, we Are Spiritual Beings able to be in relationship with our creator. And we have a full rationality which includes free will to freely love Him or not.

But made different than them as well. Bible says we were made on the 6th day with all the other animals but made for the 7th day to be in relationship with God and commune with Him. Only humans are capable of that.

Would he able to preach unto the birds and beasts of the field if they are not rational sentient beings? Does St.Francis and St.Anthony have to define every word that they utter towards the animals for them to fully understand their preachings? I don't think so. They preach directly and plainly and without defining a single terminology, and the animals understand the reasoning and teachings of the said saints. The animals are rational sentient works of GOD my brother. They are just bound to GOD's decree on fearing mankind and being subservient to us. They are just timid towards us, as GOD wills it.
