Today we're having a more relaxed 'clean with me', kind of video, where I talk you through how I clean and maintain my bioactive reptile tanks. The main focus will be my Crested Gecko's tank, however the same tips and tricks can be applied to a range of lizard, snake and amphibian tanks.

Distilled water instead of tap water helps with water marks (for misting and cleaning). I do use tap water (with sometimes pedialyte mixed in once a week) for drinking water for the geckos but not for the glass, distilled for misting and cleaning the glass. Instead of paper towels the Mr. Clean magic erasers without any soap or chemicals are amazing for the glass and water spots :). Great videos I love them!

I think that the snake plant could have maybe survived if you tried keeping it somewhere dryer like you were talking about, idk tho. Also, with snake p[lants you can actually grow a whole new plant, I think even multiple from one leaf, just by cutting them into pieces a few inches long, just make sure their the right side up. id google it tho bc i dont know a ton about it. Great video btw i do really like ones like this, theyre really great for me because i dont have a ton of people who i can talk to or who will talk to me about random gecko/ reptile stuff with. tank looks great too, i cant imagine keeping multiple as nice as yours are lol :)

Right there with you on the constantly cleaning watermarks train. I love Ziri but man her tank gets cloudy. Magnaturals are nice but they tend to leave brown streaks where they touch the glass over time of getting sprayed so even more elbow grease needed lol. Very cool with the more relaxed format, also talking about something that is often skipped by other keepers for videos but is so important especially for new keepers.

For cleaning the glass, I cut a lemon in half and rub it on the glass. Then I use a wet paper towel to remove the lemon juice and the glass is really clean afterwards. I just make sure that I remove the most of the lemon because I imagine it to be a sharp smell for the geckos

Watermarks are made by minerals in the water. There are pastes I have I have used that wipe it off fairly easy but probably not "friendly". If u can find a natural version of rainx which allows water to run off not "bead" on the glass it will prevent this as well

I live in Arizona and my water is like sand so I use a Kirkland and brita filter jugs to filter out the tap (yes, I filter it twice) as well as reptisafe and it minimized it A LOT! I use dawn and make sure to clean it out real well.
@emmathomson2584
@emmathomson2584 2 года назад
Your Britta is only removing chlorine & some taste/odour in the water. It’s not doing anything to remove dissolved particulates that would be the cause of water marks (ie. calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium)
@pietandPrince

RO/distilled water is dangerous used long term for drinking, which is why i wont use it for my animals who mostly drink from droplets on leafs. Even if they still have a waterbowl with normal water. Right now i’m running my water through a Britta filter can. It doesn’t remove everything completely, which is good, but it definitely has helped a lot with water spots not becoming as bad as quick and its not killing my live mosses lol.

Maiden head aquatics do RO filtered water, you can buy this by the gallons. Deionised water is also available from Halfords/Asda/Tesco etc You can buy small RO filters up to large scale this could be worth looking in to depending how much you need and how quickly you need it as it does filter per hour
@JKHFF7

Citric acid is commonly used to clean aquarium equipment so you could use that for water stains. RO/Distilled water is bad if it's the only source of water you're supplying because it lacks any minerals. So you can spray down the tank daily with RO/Distilled and water you plants/livestock with your house water.

@emmathomson2584
@emmathomson2584 2 года назад
Water marks can’t be removed from plant leaves. Best solution is to use softened water when watering/spraying down your tanks. Reverse osmosis water or distilled water would be best. Then you’ve got no calcium or magnesium dust on your plants/glass
@ProfJCsCritters
@ProfJCsCritters 2 года назад
I was going to say exactly this. The concerns that you allude to in the video (about RO water not being great for the plants and animals) can be addressed if you use conditioned tap water to water the pets or directly water roots, to my understanding. The RO water would be used to maintain humidity (and water epiphytes that don't need the same kinds of minerals... but you don't have any of those yet.) Full disclosure: I don't actually *use* RO at this time, because I don't mind cleaning up the water marks... but I've read a lot about it over the years. I also suspect my tap water is softer than yours, from what I see here.
@emmathomson2584
@emmathomson2584 2 года назад
I make sure to use a substrate that’s fertilized with nutrients when building my bio active tanks. So I’m able to just strictly use my RO water for all watering purposes :) it’s also the water my dog, cat and hamster also drink! It really is a myth that you need minerals in your water. Your daily intake of minerals should come solely from your diet and honestly most people have no idea what kind of minerals are even in their tap water so this myth drives me crazy 😂
@ProfJCsCritters
@ProfJCsCritters 2 года назад
@@emmathomson2584 I think it's more a long-term concern, particularly for plants, since it's a closed system . The nutrients in the soil eventually get used up, and while bioactive naturally adds some things back as inverts/fungus/bacteria decay, it may not be adding all of the minerals the plants need, depending on the plant species one keeps. It is also proven to be a concern with frogs. It all kind of depends on what you're keeping/growing and how long-term you're using RO vs. tap water.

You can absolutely get dimming thermostats in the US, herpstat is the best one. Although you can use any thermostat with a DHP. That being said, a halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer or dimming thermostat is actually more natural and beneficial than DHPs. The levels of infrared A and B a they produce more closely mimic the sun (DHPs produce barely any IRA, the most beneficial wavelength).

You have minerals in your body naturally, when you add RO water it doesn’t automatically just neutralize the minerals you already have. Meaning it wouldn’t be creating an environment where leaching minerals is a possibility. The only thing you really need to worry about in this regard, is some appliances like fridges, coffee makers, kettles, will recommend you to not use RO or DI water in them as the materials they are made of may have a possibility to leach minerals. I’m a coffee snob unfortunately lol 😝 so I add calcium and magnesium and bicarbonates into my RO water to re-mineralize it to an ideal coffee brewing water! And since it’s re-mineralized it’s not technically RO water anymore and it’s safe to be used in my appliances :)

What’s the humidity and is your hygrometer digital or analog? Does she have a humid hide? You need to remove the stuck shed. Heat mats are not a good heat source, overhead heating is much better for them. A halogen flood bulb connected to a dimmer/dimming thermostat is the most natural and beneficial option, Arcadia’s deep heat projector is the second best option.
