I live in WV... I carry everywhere. When once asked, “Why do you carry a pistol, are you expecting trouble?”.... to which I replied “if I were expecting trouble, I would be carrying my rifle.” (Thanks Jon Wayne)✌🏽
To me it seems like a no brainer. If you have a side arm, and have the permit to carry it, you do. It's just a tool, and as such, it's of little use if stuck in the box back at the farm.
it's of little use out in the fields too. If you do manual labor for a living, a concealed firearm could get in the way. At some point you have to do cost benefit analysis: cost of not being able to properly engage in your job because your worried about your firearm getting crushed or hung up on something, vs chance of carrying that fire arm actually saving your life. Those are two questions that would be answered differently for each individual. You and your situation doesn't apply to everyone
@Dill Rogerz Fair enough and I think it's great that you do. But there are plenty of things that could be potential life savors that an individual may decide are or are not worth it. You could wear a full respirator mask everyday and there'd be no chance you would ever get covid. But covid's deathrate is less than 1% and wearing that everyday would be super annoying, so most of us choose not to. I'm just making the point that carrying a gun everyday isn't the reasonable thing to do for every individual and their circumstances. If you live in a dangerous area, that makes it more worth it. If you live in a rural area where you can use if for snake/bear/cougar protection, it's more worth it. If you are super clumsy and forgetful and never practice, well that makes it way less worth it. You see what I mean?
@@christopherrowley7506 “it’s of little use in the field too”. You assume too much. Concealed or open carry, there are many options to carry that keeps your tool safe and out of harms way. Many people carry insurance, with the hope they never need to use it, but nevertheless prepare for the worst case scenario. As with carrying a firearm, one hopes to never have to use it in the defense of ones self or family. It’s best to be prepared.
@@HarrisonCountyStudio yeah i could have been more careful with that opening statement. You'll see in the next comment I have, my real point is more nuanced: " I'm just making the point that carrying a gun everyday isn't the reasonable thing to do for every individual and their circumstances. If you live in a dangerous area, that makes it more worth it. If you live in a rural area where you can use if for snake/bear/cougar protection, it's more worth it. If you are super clumsy and forgetful and never practice, well that makes it way less worth it. You see what I mean?" To use your insurance analogy, if you live in Colorado there's little reason to get hurricane insurance, if you live in Florida, probably makes more sense. My point is that carrying a gun isn't cut and dry "everyone should always carry". That reasoning is flawed. Context matters.
I carry a firearm on the farm, more so for critter control. I carry a firearm in town for the potential of two legged threats. My wife and I are both licensed carry conceal holders. We are with you as far as enjoying shooting. We participate in IDPA competitions. Also, we like Glocks too. For my Glocks, I have found the Desantis Facilitator Holster works nice out at the farm. It locks the gun in place and I don't have to worry about it getting knock out or loose when out at the farm.
My biggest problem of carrying when working is the extra weight and keeping it secured. I actually always figured you carried even though I never saw one on you.. That is what we do down home... lol
glock 42/43 or a Keltec PF9 the two lightest sidearms in production. youll never even know you have it with you. i sleep with my G43 in appendix carry and it never bothers me.
Right on the money Troy. My wife and I have lived on our small 13 acres since 1985. We've always had guns and like you, not for our own personal safety, but we have had issues with ferrell dogs that at one time used to run in a pack of 8 - 10 with the help of my neighbors, myself, and the County Dog Catcher we don't have that problem anymore. Also I'll be the first to tell you my wife is a better shooter than I am. We have a family of ground hogs that I've been taking pot shots at all summer. I'm kinda like the guy on Caddy Shack the movie with Chevy Chase where he was battling with the Gophers. These varmits have reeked havoc on my tractor by chewing wires to tearing up stuff in my storage/tractor shed. Sometimes living out off grid you have to rely on a firearm. Thanks buddy.
When someone asks what I’m scared of, because I carry everywhere I go, I tell them it’s not being scared, it’s being prepared for any bad thing that might happen. I saw you guys on the Hollar Homestead and immediately liked you guy.
@@funnyfarmdad9997 honeslty the only time i have desired ti carry a gun is a large rifle when i go into the bush bevause theres are bears and cogars in it but ive never done so. I have no real need to carry a gun any other time
You explained yourself very clearly and it showed that everyone that has a Firearm is not a nut like alot of people think. People that are harmful are the criminals and they will always find a means to get one Thank you again. America Stand Strong on the 2nd Amendment!
Troy i am with you its not always necessary to carry but thats the beauty of our state law. If someone is contemplating to do harm they will always think twice. Because in our state with the high percentage of those who carry perps can know if someone is or isnt carrying. So it is by far the best deterrent against crime and violence.
Black Bear, Dogs, feral cats, raccoons with distemper/rabies, coyote. I list BB first. 80 acres or so here, every spring and fall, I would go around the property and mark the border. 50 -75 feet was the rules we had to follow. Red marked areas were no hunting and yellow - allowed hunting, with contacting the property owner. I did this for my father-inlaw. Now - the first year I did it, we were raising goslings. 6 of them. I had just got to sleep, when the goslings began screaming bloody murder. I pulled off the trigger lock, loaded the 12 and walked out the door. In the yard light on the power pole, I saw a bear walking back into the woods. The geese were calming down - all was good. Father - inlaw gets up at 5 am, walks out the door and gets in his car and leaves. He notices a fragrance of ode-du-crap. I get up at 5:30 and the sun is just rising. I see a pile of bear dung in the middle of the road, in front of the geese shed. The same week, I walk the border again and every tree I posted a sign, it was ripped off the tree and the bear clawed the tree a foot above my mark all the way to the base. For 12 years, the bear walked and dumped in the road the same night I flagged the border. Thought you might get a chuckle. Cheers
I got to the point where I do not have the patience to entertain questions like that. Whoever asks those questions are, normally, delusional people who live in a parallel universe. I am 200% with you!
I never carry on the curtilage. I always carry in the "back 40"... bears. A cheap nylon belt holster works fine and doesn't really get in the way. No need to conceal - it's my property. I carry a .357 revolver. It only collects a little bit of dirt, but revolvers can really take a beating and still go bang.
A tool is only useful if it’s easily accessible. You make a general risk assessment and pick your tools accordingly. On a homestead I can see a dog being a more practical tool to keep around “at all times”. But I certainly would not want anyone dictate or limit which tool I’m allowed to keep around.
Right on. No one should have the right to dictate what you choose to protect your family or property with. Want to use a dog, use a dog, want to use a chainsaw, use a chainsaw, sword, or AR15. Your life, your choice.
Best talk on carry. It’s a tool. Do I always carry a hammer? No, it weighs a lot and I only have it if I’ll need it. Keep up the great videos! Love your work and straight, to the point advise.
Great video, Troy! I was working in my yard a couple years ago, and turned around to find a feral dog staring me down about 10 yards from me. Ever since, I have kept a good supply of clean underwear and either have my own dogs in the yard or carried.
Rear concealment is the worst. On your property, just wear a regular exterior hip holster if you choose to carry. Better than having something out of reach when you need it.
im in a somewhat similar situation, i just dont find carrying practical alot of the times, i often have stuff on my belt, wear suspenders, get dirty / muddy / wet etc. I have found a good solution is actually a sholder holster. its out of the way enough that it dosent get in the way of what im doing, dosent get dirty, dosent take up belt realestate, i can take it on and off easily and put whatever im wearing over it or wear it on top depending on the situation, its very versitle. no its not the fastest acess, esp if i have layers on, but it is much more likely that ill have it on me than not. mine is a galco jackass rig and i think its a great holster.
I live in Texas and I own firearms. Got my first one at age 8. My 3 brothers and their wives all have CCWs and routinely carry. I do not. I'm now disabled and use a cane to get around. I feel I had enough training/experience in my 20 years of military service to handle almost anything close-up that I need to, especially with a cane to help. However, in my 73 years I have never been in a situation where carrying a firearm would have been of any value to me or others. I do live in town, lock my doors and keep one loaded firearm near my bed.
I never leave my house without my side arm. Multiple times I've gone outside to find random people parked in my drive (only house/property down this road). It's died down a bit since people have come to realize someone under 90 lives here and there's no easy pickin's theft wise anymore.

A firearm is a tool just like any other tool. And since we have the 2nd Amendment in the US, people should exercise that Right, in simple course, to maintain that Constitutional Right.
jesus christ. its not a constitutional right. its a NATURAL RIGHT. the constitution is the contract the grants the government authority to exist. The constitution merely LIMITS THE GOVERNMENT. It doesnt create your rights. Holy Fuck Guy.
I also think of one as a pocket knife,...I got a inexpensive small caliber, its light and fits the needs of 99% of what I need, no need for a full frame large caliber....its the noise that scares most animals away anyway. A little berretta bobcat or tomcat in .22 or .25 is plenty for my needs and cheap enough to pull it out and have a little fun.
God Bless W. Virginia. Or any other state that does not restrict 2nd amendment rights. One year later from this video being produced we are in a different situation. My guess is that people have a different opinion about being armed all the time. I have two concealed carry holster one heavy-duty for working around the house and one leather that has an internal lock that I use for taking walks or traveling. Sorry about the rant, but circumstances change and some of us are too old and have issues were we can't physically defend ourselves or family. A family could be just about anyone but bad guys.
We're down in far southern Indiana in the middle of nowhere. A couple years ago I had two coyotes attack one of my dogs (Murphy) then come after me while we were out in the woods at 3 in the afternoon. They enjoyed 11 rounds from my S&W 9mm off my hip before they could get me but they did get a few good back leg hits on Murphy before I knew what was happening. He's a big dog and was ok (chicks dig scars) but it could have been a lot worse. It turned out there was several more coyotes over the hill (20 feet away) that were coming to join in but then took off after hearing the shots. I don't go outside without carrying some sort of firearm.
Hahaha... I was sitting here thinking "I've seen him open carry before in videos... wait, why he's standing weirdly." and then you pull out a shotgun from your ass. XD Well done sir.
Knife and pistol are best to carry in general. I like them for snakes racoons dogs and groundhogs. By the time we spot a groundhog in the fields it's too late to go to the house and get the 22 or the shotgun.
well it depends. I think in certain season (namely fall and late summer) it would be advisable to. 1 week ago, i heard the chickens make a lot of noise, i went looking and i saw 3 hens looking poiting at the fence, and just outside of such fence there was a young fox. I felt naked in that time, I do know that it will come back and it did came back at night too :(
A friend, at the end of our road, had a Bob cat in the hen house. She could see it with her prized chicken in its mouth, so she shot at it lol. Normally this would sound normal but my friend is about 70, female, about 90lb's 😂😂😂 First thing that came to my mind was Granny from the Beverly Hilbillies 😂😂😂
On September 11,2020 here in Florida I applied for my CCP, I went to the Dot,Tax collectors office to apply, that day they had 168 people apply for a CCP.
This is how it should be.. We got much stricter gunlaws here now, but when and where I grew up most people had guns hanging on the wall or in their cubboards etc. Like you said, it's a tool and useful in certain situations even if not often. Only reason people would ever bring a gun with them though was if someone had seen a brown bear in the neighbourhood. Occasionally they can get grumpy, and they are NOT fun then....
in southern ky I see ppl in Walmart open carrying pretty regularly. also I would bet there is not a church in the county that doesn't have an armed member or 3 in the crowd. Strange times we live in.
Not a big fan of open carry. It removes the surprise element of self defense. We have an armed security team at our church. Unfortunate necessity these days.
@@RedToolHouse The element of surprise is an offensive concept. Out of sight, out of mind. An ounce of prevention is worth 9 rounds of cure... I'd rather end the incident before it starts than discharge rounds in public because a bad guy saw no reason to abort his plan...
As my wife and I are looking into raising and harvesting our own pork and or goat meat, what would be the the best firearm to safely and humanly harvest livestock? We just got our carry licenses here in PA. 😃🌈🤙
So if no license is required to carry a firearm, then why is one offered, and why do you have a license? Just curious. I think your channel is great by the way!
I don’t carry on my farm in WV, but there are times I would feel better with the bears, snakes, and mountain lions. Call it a noisy hole punch. I wish I could golf with a 12 gauge.
Man a high point makes a good hammer that's about it. Why not strong side carry in a good holster? It will be secure and offer protection from the elements. Of course you might need a belt. WV is an open carry state also isn't it?
Ha! no doubt. I have a great conceal holster and the nice paddle holster in the thumbnail pic but I sweat them up so badly I have to oil the gun every couple of days! WV is an open carry and permitless conceal carry.
Yes and no? Not this cat. When ever my big toe goes across the threshold outside on my property, I’m strapped two times. I’m a lot more worried about the two legged animals....
Not being American I've never understood why people are so fixated on carrying guns? I've lived nearly 60 years and never felt at any time I wish I was armed. Obviously if you're a farmer and have to protect livestock from preditors etc, its certainly something every country makes allowances for, but outside that environment the only reason you'd need to be armed is because everybody else is armed. You only have to look at the gun deaths in the US to realise guns in the hands of the general public is a very bad idea. In the UK there's about 20 gun deaths per year, in the US its about 50000. There's simply no way you can justify that...
Sure you can. If you live 2 miles from your closest neighbor, the only thing protecting you from 2 guys with axes is you. So if you have anything you like (tools, car, wife) that you don't want two guys taking from you, you'd be best being armed. Here's a google search for crime in UK: How many burglaries are there in the UK in 2019? 402 thousand burglaries Granted that's like half a percent of your population is robbed each year, so maybe only 1 of 3 people will ever be robbed in your country (supposing people live to 80, some people are robbed twice, etc.)
I just dont think I would ever leave my doors unlocked anywhere even out in the back country of west Virginia or Virginia. There's crazy nuts everywhere that just seem to find there way to where you would least expect them sometimes. Example is Shawn James on RU-vid up in Canada maybe you've seen his predicament but he lives off grid and has had issues with a family that seem him in RU-vid and figured out where he was at and started playing extremely loud music over big speakers to aggravate and scare him.well these nuts did encou ter his wife and two girls and it scared them so bad they told Shawn they would not come back out with him again.they stole some stuff from him and the cops got involved and they pressed charges on Shawn because there deer cameras they were spying on Shawn with were stolen . So cops had Shawn come to the police headquarters to questioned him about it and realized Shawn wasn't the one that stole anything but that those nuts had scared his wife and daughters and had stolen from him and the loud music and more stuff. The cops gave those nuts a stern warning and Shawn so far hasn't had anymore issues but he and his family dont feel safe and hes starting all over again at a different location away from the crazies. All that cabin building by hand with only hand tools like the old towers did and all for nothing now because he feels he has to move and start all over .very sad situation but hes moving on and will be fine and is excited to build a new homestead bigger than the last so his wife and daughters will be more comfortable happy and feel safe also. So no matter where you are it can happen. I'm just stating this about Shawn because you said you don't worry about locking doors on anything. Just becareful because we just never ever know whats around the next corner or what test God may give us next. He protects but there's always those people that just hate seeing people safe happy and secure and try to push the envelope . Seems like the last 4 yrs all those nuts have come out of there closets attacks and basements to do what there sick brains have been telling them to do. Really happy to hear your a second ammendment supporter . I'm just afraid the way the left is now they will be trying to take that away and co e after out guns magazines and ammo so they can control us and do whatever they want with there socialism and communism dreams. I wish NC would move to not having to have a concealed carry permit . Hopefully in time but it won't ever happen with a dem in power . Yall be safe and healthy and god bless 🙏
I'm 66 years old, and I've never needed a gun on my person. My father was a big city cop. He never carried his gun off the job. Call that 78 years with no call for a gun. You people must life exciting lives.
@@solventtrapdotcom6676 Sheltered and privileged? I was a machinist and a long-haul truck driver. And a warehouseman. I grew up in the city in a working class neighborhood. Where's my lottery winning, you kook? The last time a gun was fired in my town, it was a guy killing his wife and himself. That was at least ten yaers ago.
I don't carry at home. Don't feel the need in my particular area. I see a bear now and then. No major coyote pressure. But have NEVER had stranger trespass here (that I've seen), and I don't feel worried about that as things currently stand.
In the book of Nehemiah, Nehemiah placed armed guards on the city walls so the work could be finished without interruption from those that opposed the rebuilding of Jerusalem. Defensive position, of course. At the Last Supper, Jesus tells his disciples that perilous times are coming and says "let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one". Jesus may have been speaking metaphorically about the Sword of the Spirit.
So many good things to sat and I hope you get to; I never went to school till I was in my late late thirties but I walked and carried my sisters, same with my kids and from early time, hold it cause I am getting there, They had gun safety schools in the public system and to me made so much sense. Everyone knew how and when to use a gun. There are personal safety issues yes but if it is that bad then do you need to be there?? Or is there unprotected areas of concern.. I know you follow me on this. You start with the learning; then you graduate to the use of... and dad says take something with you. Then is when its nice to have a good horse that also knows that he is not the target and will stand still. I knew of this mule that would run if he spotted aa gun and a guy rented him from owner. Who told him that he was okay with all this.. the guy ignored the warning thinking he was going to blind fold this mule... I hope you see where this is going/LOL. Anyway the gun kept the gun wrapped in the blanket that he was going to use.. at least from what he told me later that I gathered. That mule could smell gunpowder for a quarter mile and when that raggedy rag blanket got close to the mules nose, he left that state and didn't stop till he flopped over close to dead. I had to take a truck over and decide if we were eating that mule or bringing him home. I kinda loved and hated him both and love won so that mule came back with me where dad said I did good (step dad) Long and short, that mule got over being scared and would let you put a gun in the scabbard so you could shoot off his back. I brought a lot of venison home behind of that mule with a pack horse doing most the work. That mule was so long legged that he could step across most creeks and a narrow spot in the river (He hated getting his feet wet) so he would look on his own and I learned to let him. Well enough on times gone by, that was clever how you hid that shot gun on you at first. My personal favorite anymore. I like he multi purpose rifle/shotgun for barrel if it is a single barrel and the only gun I keep now is a double barrel stagecoach version twelve gauge. Breaks down for very easy cleaning, a dirty gun can hurt you if not leave you unprotected. My neighbor carried a 45 glock in his front pocket with one in the pipe till most recently and I could give you his no., to prove it. He was drinking ( its after five somewhere) and when he removed it from pocket with the three safeties on and it went off hitting change in pocket, then just grazing his upper theye and missed the knee cap to perforate the skin on the shin bone and finally stop when it hit his steel toed carhartt ... that is where I found the bullet that he reloads. Kinda the reason he got away with it I think. I should of called the law and sent him to the hospital (I used to be a EMT) so he literally begged so I gave in and watched him for neurological shock and clean him so good that he cried like a baby and I told him clean or your going to the hospital. That wound is almost healed but once in while he uses cane to take the weight off it. I hope it don't bite me for not calling and I did get ahold of his near forty year old son who is a straight ace. I hate it when I see my fingers keep telling more. So on that I will end what could of been a "Great video" and ended it so later with more stories for your book on experiences of youtube/LOL
I am with 2A also, I just never carry a gun because of the weight and security issue. It is like a very expensive cell phone.. why carry it around everywhere if I am not going to use it.
Concealed carry is ok, but what I wouldn't like is the open carry in the states that allow it, as the people who just go around public areas Open Carry is just to intimidate others.
The number for the low crime rate in WV and use of guns is rarely needed is that the state is the 94% white population, and if you look at the whole nations murder rate, the whiter the area the lower the crime. This might not be politically correct but true by government crime records.
@@RedToolHouse Yea I have a fire extinguisher at home. But I don't feel the need to walk around the house with it. I don't carry it into grocery stores to intimidate other patrons. I don't dream of the day I can use my fire extinguisher thus fulfilling my desire to hurt fires. Also my fire extinguisher makes it less likely to be the victim of a fire. A gun makes you more likely to be the victim of a shooting.
@@jinxedchef If people were intimidated by your fire extinguisher, they are as dumb as those intimidated by a gun. Inanimate objects are just that, inanimate. More people are killed with hands and feet than rifles, yet somehow you are less afraid of people walking around with hands...
