Do I Have a Bent Crank Shaft

My Husqvarna Lawn Tractor had a hard summer last year. Time to check for damages!!
There was a bad vibration on the tractor when using it at the end of last summer. I hope I didn't bend the crank shaft. I gave the mower a hard time last summer as I was mowing over everything that Hurricane Fiona had left in her wake. I should have cleaned the yard up but I had no time for that, so I mowed over everything.
In being so cruel to the mower last summer I managed to make a pretty good mess of the deck. Here is a link to a video where I made repairs to the deck:
• Husqvarna 42" Mower De...
Have a look and see all the damage that was done to the mower deck.
So seeing all that damage I am concerned that I may have bent the crank shaft on the engine as there was a pretty good vibration on the lawn tractor. Lets hope it's not a bent shaft!!
Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy the video. Please 'thumbs up' me and leave me some comments. And if you haven't done so already, please consider 'subscribing' to my channel. It sure helps my videos get noticed and my channel grow.
I hope you all have a great week.
We'll talk to yas ...

Seems that Fiona just keeps on giving and giving...guess we'll all see power rates go up to pay for the $35M the power company spent on clean-up. On the positive, good that the crank shaft doesn't appear to be needing replacing. Really on a lighter note, did you know that there is a whole comic strip called Crankshaft!? There is a striking similarity between you and the main character, Ed! LOL Have yourselves a wonderful Canada Day weekend!!

How's she goin'? You're right Artie and although I was running the mower over some pretty rough terrain last summer, when I think about it, bending the crank was probably not happening. Good evening Mike. It was good to rotate the crank, but I would have also rocked it by pulling on the slip clutch. It's more often than not that an excessive vibration would come from damaged blades or a damaged mandrel assembly / mandrel bearings. Have a good one!
@GrampiesWorkshop
@GrampiesWorkshop Месяц назад
How's she goin'? I believe the vibration was in fact coming from the deck as there was a damaged spindle in the deck. That made one of the blades rotate off center and cause the vibration. I was thinking of turning the crank with the slip clutch Paul, but I wouldn't have been able to see the pulley under the tractor and pull the cord on top of the tactor!! LOL Take 'er easy!!

Good diagnostic and Inwould say it would take a terrible shock to bend the crank. I have seen a long time ago a shock had Sheridan the key way on the flywheel and the small engine didn’t want to start. That’s a story for another day….CHEERS
@GrampiesWorkshop
@GrampiesWorkshop Месяц назад
Hello there Gator! When I think about it you are right on with that thought about it being a reach to think the crank would be bent. It is not attached to the deck except via the belts and the belts would take all the shock. I was happy it wasn't bent all the same though!! LOL Take 'er easy!!

Great that it’s not bent. That would be expensive. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Hard to say what the shake is. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I some times drill a 1/8 hole in those tie rod ends, above the ball and squeeze grease in with my finger or use a spray grease. Sure helps lube those tie rod ends. Then when done fill the hole with grease to help keep the dirt out. Hope Nannie is well and you both have a great Canada Day weekend. 👍🏻👍🏻👋👋🇨🇦🇨🇦💥💥💣

How's she goin'? Thanks Noel. Thanks for asking after Nannie. She had a good day today!! That's a good idea for greasing the tie rod ends. I think the shake was coming from the deck. I'm glad to see it isn't the crank shaft. My guess is the vibration is coming from something on the mowing deck. I recently had a bad vibration with my tiller on the GC2610. Turns out is was a u-joint on the jack shaft that needed grease. Nice, easy, and cheap repair!! Take care, Mike.

Hi Mike 👋,thats a good way you checked the crank, and lucky it wasn't bent, thats a bit of a puzzle why that belt guide keeps breaking 🤔
@GrampiesWorkshop
@GrampiesWorkshop Месяц назад
How's she goin'? No one was happier than me to see that the crank wasn't bent Neville. The belt guide is a head scratcher for sure. I have broken 3 and they all break in the same spot. I think it has to do with the belt being loose and snapping up tight when the deck comes under load. The snapping of the belt probably breaks the guide. That guide is on the 'tension' side of the pulley too, so that makes me think it has something to do with it. Thanks for commenting. Take care!!

HowDee old friend. Summer is well on its way or there now. I hope you can get Nannie J outside to soalk a bunch of it in. Good medicine from the sun and fresh air eh. Do you not have a dial indicator and magnetic stand ? They are not that much $ wise and invalyable on things like this. Perhaps a friend there may have one to borrow for a quick test of that cranky crank. A cleanish part of the mower deck should be magnetic. Place the stand on a clean ish spot and adjust the indicator to a spot as close to theplace where the crank leaves the crank case and "0" it by gently pulling the indicator in and out a couple times making sure it reads the same every time. "0" the indicator again and rotate the engine. What we/you are looking for is a reading of no more than .004 inches. You want the test area as clean as possible. Some coarse #80 sand paper on the crank etc. If it passes this test do the same on all the vertical shafts that are within the mower deck. If you don't find a guilty part it must be a belt or ? .004 is about twice the thickness of a human hair and won't be easily seen from an untrained eye. Even then a hard one to see. That's why we have indicators bud. Let me know how you make out. If a test shows .010 don't run it. Take it to a machine shop and they may be able to get it within tollerences. You are well capeable of taking the crank out yourself bud.

Hello there Dean! I do have a dial indicator with a magnetic base. To be frank, I never thought of using it to check the crank. I figured just spinning it would tell me if it was bent. The vibration I had was pretty intense, so I figured if the crank was causing it I could see it with my eye. As it turns out Dean, I had a broken spindle in the mower deck and I think that was the root of the vibration. When I run the mower with no deck there was no vibration. Mind you it's not under load, but I think the deck was the bad guy here and the crank shaft is OK. Thanks for the info about checking it though. Those numbers will be good to put in my data base on the mower for future reference. I hope your summer is going good old friend and that you have a great Canada Day! Take 'er easy!!

@@GrampiesWorkshop WOOHOO Mike, I might have figured you had one. After all your background says you would. You can always check blade vertical flight from one side of a blade to another too. I'm so disappointed that it wasn't bent. I love to tear things apart and I was hoping that we'd see the engine in bits all over the floor, but not this time. Could the broken belt guide be from the belt being too tight? I admire how many videos you produced ahead of the surgery. That's impressive. We hope nanny is doing well! Best wishes as always.(and a pat on the head to each and every little squirrel...... and rabbit)
@GrampiesWorkshop
@GrampiesWorkshop Месяц назад
How's she goin'? It was a real shame the crank wasn't bent because I was looking forward to 'not' having to mow the lawn all summer!! LOL The belt guide is on the 'tension' side of the pulley and I think what happens is the belt is loose, due to wear, and when it comes under load it snaps the belt tight and that bring it up against the guide and over time, breaks it off. When I looked on Amazon for a replacement, the left side (the side that I broke) is sold in pairs and the right side is just one at a time. That tells me something too eh!! Thanks for asking after Nannie. She is making progress this week!! Oh and don't worry, I didn't even have a squirrel BBQ for Canada Day this year!! Take 'er easy and Happy Canada Day to you guys!!
@MissouriOldTimer
@MissouriOldTimer Месяц назад
it does look like the belt should go between the short piece of the belt guide and the main support.. It would be very rare if the crankshaft on a riding mower would get bent because the belts take up most of the shock if you hit a rock or stob and it would be hard to actually run the pulley into something solid with all the tractor framework in place.
@TomokosEnterprize
@TomokosEnterprize Месяц назад
I just talked to him about using a dial indicator to see exactly what's going on in there. These small engines have pretty small tolerances. .004 to .010 max to see what is going on.
