In life, there is an endless list of things that you need to make decisions on, both big and small. Getting a motorcycle, especially your first motorcycle, can be one of the biggest decisions you will ever make. Today, I discuss if I regret getting the Honda Rebel 500 as my first bike. I know you won’t want to miss this one and you might be surprised by my answer. I go over when I made my decision, what I was thinking about, and how everything has turned out now that I have owned this motorcycle for almost 2 years.

My first bike was a Yamaha Virago 750- I rode it 2-3 times and then sold it and bought my 2018 Rebel 500. I love it! I am a brand new rider and this bike is so much easier to handle.

I was already considering a Rebel 500 before I found your channel, but your content really helped me make the decision to pick one up. I only have my permit and have only taken the bike out a few times on backroads in my area, but I think it’s great for my first bike. I’m 5’8” and it fits me very well. I’m still working up my courage to hit the main streets. A few more times and I’ll be there.

Wow, that’s so cool! Thank you for sharing your experience and I am super glad I was able to help in a little way. You will get there 100%. When I first started, I had enough courage to go to the big parking lot near my house and back. Then I found a quiet 35 mph loop. Then graduated to a more complicated 15 mile loop. It just takes practice. Ride safe!

I don't regret getting my Rebel 500 one bit. Okay, there is the "Wow, did I really spend that much on mods for the bike after being so happy I got such an affordable one" regret, but it's so very minor and I love my bike. I researched the bike a lot, and was leaning towards the 300, I knew I wouldn't be happy with it for long, but a great price point for a started bike. The 500 fell into my lap, someone bought it new, had it for a month, but wanted a bigger bike, they were 6'6" and it was just a little small. So I got the bike, below MSRP, with a year warranty left on it, way too good a deal to pass up. Mod wise, added a Puig semi-fairing, Givi engine guards, Red Dragon forward controls, grip puppy comfort grips, USB charger, Quad-lock, OEM side and top tank pads, Mustang seat, Givi top case on the back luggage rack, Honda OEM saddle bags, and an Insta360 x2 camera plus mount attached to the mirror. So yeah, tons of mods you can do.
@evergreenmoto
@evergreenmoto Год назад
Wow!! Holy crap, that’s a ton of mods! I would probably have a little bit of that spent way too much on mod fear as well, but every mod I have done so far has enhanced my riding experience so much, that I haven’t regretted anything yet. How do you like the forward controls?? I’ve been thinking about them for a little while.
@bradroddenham6370
@bradroddenham6370 Год назад
@@evergreenmoto I really like them. They worked with the Givi engine guards I installed, and they move your feet forward about 6 inches or so, for me I find it more comfortable. I'm on the not so fun side of the half century mark, and the sport bike feel with you feet tucked under you and knees bent can get a bit uncomfortable after some time, with the controls moved forward it feels like a more natural seating position. If you're going for the highway pegs this won't replace that, you're not that far forward, but I think they're great. Price with shipping might make you blink, the Red Dragon controls come from Vietnam and the shipping is on the high side, but now that I have them, not a single regret. There are other forward control kits that work, but I've noted that those have install issues reported, tweaking needed to install. Red Dragon, no install issues at all.
@evergreenmoto
@evergreenmoto Год назад
@@bradroddenham6370 that’s awesome, thank you for sharing your experience! Yeah, after riding for a few hours, my knees for sure get sore, so I think forward controls would help with that.
@jaywinters2483

Honda's saddle bags are very impressive. Water proof. Sharp. I got dumped on with rain. Completely dry inside. 16 tooth front sprocket is a good mod. Will drop the rpms from the 3500 rpm (60 mph) to 3100. I like the fact that I can stand up on footpegs when comes to RxR & big bumps. Gonna get heated grips.
@evergreenmoto
@evergreenmoto Год назад
That’s awesome, I didn’t know how well they held up. I’ll have to take a look at them! Oh yeah, that’s a really good idea. I like the foot pegs as well for bumps. Harder to do with forward controls.

That's not all the riding I do though , I like to lounge in a comfy sofa with wheels as well that's why I have a Kawasaki Vulcan 900 custom. insurance is very high for new riders, that is why best to go with small displacement like a 500 and below, after a few years ( 2 or 3) you will see the dramatic difference, then you can get a Turbo Busa

@evergreenmoto
@evergreenmoto Год назад
Great question, I would say there are a lot of factors that go into this decision. Does the difference in cost play a role? What kind of riding do you plan to do mostly (around town or highway/commuting)? Do you have any motorcycle experience (dirt bikes or taking MSF courses)? I got the 500 as my first street bike and felt like it was a perfect fit. I was worried about out growing the 300 too quickly (which I hear happens a lot of the time), and with throttle respect, I was able to grow into the 500 fairly quickly. I had prior experience on a dirt bike as well. Both bikes are almost exactly the same when it comes to everything but the motor, so the fit will be the same. If you want to get something that you will grow into and price isn’t an issue, I would suggest the 500. If you aren’t sure if riding is going to be for you or you are really concerned/intimidated with motorcycles in general, than maybe the 300 is a good fit. Either way, you can always get something used and then upgrade later if need be. I hope this helps, and good luck with getting your first bike! Congratulations, let me know what you end up going with. One thing I can say for sure, is that you will have the time of your life on your new bike!
@fishontv123
@fishontv123 Год назад
I was thinking this too, but figured to just go with the 500 when I'm ready because the 300 feels pretty restricted when it comes to road trips due to the lower power and speed. I KNOW the 500 will keep me satisfied for years.

@evergreenmoto

Good question! I think it’s something that you learn as you ride. I feel like I can usually feel when it’s time to shift. Having the louder exhaust really helps at higher speeds, sometimes I would rev the bike way out getting on the highway with the stock exhaust. A tach would be really nice, but you can learn when to shift after riding for a bit.

Good question, I have heard people that tall say it was a great bike for them. I’m 5’9” so I can’t say for sure, but when I start out, everything is totally fine. After a few hours of riding, my ankles and knees start to get sore. But, that’s why I’m getting highway pegs. There are also forward control conversion options for the Rebel. If you aren’t doing 4+ hour long rides on the regular, you are probably good to go. My recommendation would be to go to the dealer and sit on the bike to see how it feels. Then go sit on a bike like the Indian scout that has forward controls. It’s all about whatever is most comfortable for you! I hope this helps!

Honda's wannabe Harley bikes never last long. Almost every owner sell them after one season. Just look at the average 2020 version of Honda Rebel = 3 to 4 owners. That pretty much sums it up. The bike is boring = low horsepower, no sound almost, too gentle motor. Try a Harley FXDX or FXD and you know what I mean and will understand why peopl love Harley bikes.
