As you can see, it's a very common thing to watch anime in Japan. Even though not every grown-up watches them regularly, most of them have watched some stuff in the past. With younger generations, pretty much everybody watched anime when they were little. Even if you are not Japanese, many of you have watched some Japanese anime when you were little. I remember when I went to Japan and went to the summit of Mount Fuji wearing a dragon ball Z shirt and 3 elderly ladies came up to me saying "Goku, Goku" and then did the kamehameha hand signal and I ended up chatting to them for a bit because they knew a bit of English, Seriously love Japan so much hope they are doing well❤️

Half the comments seem to be "lol, they think Frozen is anime", while failing to understand that in Japan, anime just means animation. Anime does not mean the same thing in Japan as it does elsewhere.

I am a 75 year old Canadian woman and I have watched some anime primarily because I do art and I love much of the art you see in anime. I was particularly impressed by: "The Wind Rises", "The Garden of Words", "A Whisker Away", "Words Bubble up Like Soda Pop", "From Up on Poppy Hill", "Flavors of Youth", "Marnie", "Forest of Piano", "Only Yesterday", "Miss Hokusai", "Blue Period" and most recently, "The Tale of Princess Yaguya". I'm not interested in the teen anime about super heros etc. and can really only watch stories that are more mature... It's strange that the film Blue Period about a young art student is not particularly well done as far as the art work goes! "The Tale of Princess Yaguya" is done for young children --the style of art is definitely old Japanese--very beautiful. So sorry I can't find the movie "Your Name" on Netflix or the other movie platforms I use, because I can see that the art is exemplary. I am very interested in Japanese art and culture and particularly Zen and Haiku. My late husband was an expert on Zen.

Children: funny and wholesome. Teens and adults, maybe: shounen, horror, romance, comedy, dark, phantasy, mystery, supernatural, JoJo, drama and more. Elders: funny and wholesome. That's life-cycle for you!

6:55 aaaahh i forgot the title of that anime, it is about a girl which can summon microphone and use it to make magic. When she go to the dwarf world, everything was reverse. In class she was the only one not raising hands when asked "who want to answer questions", so she got called while everyone was raising their hands. It was so great with a lot of sentiments and sad moments too. If i recall correctly, it was during first digimon period.

This magnificent interview with the elder Japanese people about the watched anime has woken several souvenirs of their childood, which has allowed us to discover a suprisingly large range of anime, from famous ones to completely new discoveries ! 😀 It's already incredible to discover all these animes from different decades, but the most wonderful are the stories of these kind and open-handed people. Indeed, each interviewed person who has already watched anime describes the reasons that has led them to watch these anime. Some view the anime as an opportunity to spend nice times with their grandchildren, whereas others have watched anime as a truly nice and funny leisure in their childhood. There are also some people who enjoy watching some particular anime for the treated topic and the envionment in which the story of this anime takes place. So, whatever the reason for watching anime is, these people all have in common the joy that anime procures. As we can see, all these people become instantly joyful as soon as they talk about their anime experience. Concerning the other group of people that has never watched anime, these people have simply found their happiness in other nice and funny leisures. Anyway, I've noticed that some anime seem to be more popular among elder Japanese people, Sazae-san being definitively the most mentioned one. Thanks to all these kind people and Yuta-san, I've expanded my knowledge about the Japanese anime world, which has even motivated me to look for the plot of the newly discovered anime. ☺🙏🏻

I'm Swiss and 52yo and I still watch animes, a lot of animes, especially in this period when I was forces to stay home for month, I've watched almost a complete season of some series a day, a real binge watching of almost everything. I love animes, I love the way the stories and the characters are defined and developed. So personally I don't find anything strange to watch animes even for grown up people, because the stories are so varied that you can find your happiness at every age. I also regularly go at the Polymanga that is a big manga/anime/pop culture convention in Montreux (Switzerland) and I like it very much.

I wish someone made an interview about Japanese reading books - like fiction novels and so on. There's a stereotype that Japanese only read manga, so I've always wondered about them reading usual literature: how many books they read in a year, what they prefer to read, what's their favorite book.

Where I'm from, I grew up with a number of pretty old Japanese animes. They were all dubbed into my language so as a child, I had no idea they were actually from Japan until later on. Ones I could remember watching were: Doraemon, Shin-chan, Astro Boy, Detective Conan, Chibi Maruko-chan, Atashinchi, Digimon and Pokemon. I think there were more, but I can't remember.

It was an interesting interview. I think many people in their 40s-60s today may have grown up on manga rather than anime, and I think many people in their 70s and older are skeptical of manga/anime. From now on, more and more adults will be able to proudly say they like anime.
