Archfiend of the Dross is such a perfect design for demons. I feel like it's a race that has been designed "wrong" so many times. If you make a deal with a demon, i.e. summon one to fight for you, there should be a catch. Making a pact with a demon should come with both great power and potential, but also high risk.

Small correction about Laelia, the Blade Reforged. Laelia's ability states that when one or more cards enter exile, she gets a +1/+1 counter, so when the sword says that it puts 2 cards into exile, they go in at the same time. This would only trigger Laelia's ability once, since the 2 cards going into exile counts as a single action of "one or more" cards.

I'm new to MTG apprx. 3 months or so. This will be my first pre-release. Thank you professor for all of your videos! I don't know how much more time you have in your schedule but I would love to see you host interactive work shops for new players. Even if my local store were to put it on with you as a virtual host or something. Plus I live in the south where games like this aren't as popular as football so my closest store is actually 2 hours away. Working as a Paramedic, my hours are crazy so having access to your knowledge is invaluable to me and my wife. Thank you again!

I kinda slept on the card All Will Be One at first until I started thinking about it more, none of the stuff you mentioned came to my mind but Vexing Puzzlebox is an interesting include for a chance based big burn as a simple mana rock! Vexing Puzzlebox is also good with The Filigree Sylex and Lux Artillery from the same set, very exciting combos ahead!

Thanks prof for the rule zero mention with AWBO and Quest. That combo reminds me of sanguine bond and exquisite blood (blood bond as I like to call it) in that it is easily slotted into any deck that runs those colors. I played against a guy who was running Vito and he played blood so we asked if he ran the other end. He said no. we still dealt with the blood since Vito goes with it too but at the end of the game, he admitted he was "bluffing" and did run both pieces. We called him out saying that's not bluffing and was straight up lieng and he shouldn't lie about that in the future. So I'm glad you brought up the rule zero suggestion to say if you run the full combo or just want to value off AWBO

Great video! Your recaps of these sets really do help me reconsider what cards I actually want in a new set, which end up making me realize I spend way too much on booster packs. Regarding the Ichormoon Gauntlet, there is another new card in ONE that is crazy with the 0 ability, which is the Blue Dominus creature; 2UU for a legendary 3/5 that doubles proliferate. I realized that, when combined with any single other way to proliferate, you can create an infinite combo using Jace, Cunning Castaway from Ixalan! Granted, to start the combo, you need to get Jace to 6 loyalty at least, but with the Dominus out, any other planeswalker or non creature spell that proliferates will do the trick. Once Jace is at or above 6, you can -5 him to create 2 token copies of him that are non-legendary. Using 1 of the tokens, 0 him to double proliferate, which adds 2 more loyalty to the other token copy, enabling you to -5 that token copy to make 2 more tokens. Repeat the process any number of times so that you have any number of jace copies, then with Ichormoon Gauntlet, you can achieve infinite turns with your Jace copies on the following turn. Oh how fun it sounds to take infinite turns via Planeswalker combo, right?!

Phyrexian Vindicator! I came back a few months ago from an over decade hiatus since new phyrexia, and I have a couple og Obliterators. Vinducator is not only a white take on the card, but the art and flavor text are both callbacks to the first printing of obliterator and I just need to have it.

Heartless Act will be a great answer for the Archfiend (force opponent to use an instant on the stack at upkeep in response, lol); excited about the Hive, though, seems like a great addition to Selesnya token generator decks, especially w/ Venerated Rotpriest, I love Toxic(/Infect) as a mechanic!

I want the rat in the set, but I find the odd booster can be an interesting pallet of possibilities to add to the collection, sometimes more interesting than others.

Your picks were reasonable, Prof, but I was surprised Phyrexian Vindicator and Elesh Norn, Mother of Machines didn’t make the cut. Vindicator is an infinite combo with Guilty Conscience in Mono-W and has other uses with Pariah effects. Meanwhile, the new Norn instantly becomes a staple in the 99 of any W-based blink deck like Brago and Preston. Even so, loved the video, as always! ❤

Oh man, I didn't think about Skrel's Hive. Definitely need to figure out how to splash white in my 8 cast deck now. I've been thinking about it for awhile now.

You forgot Dreadhorde Invasion. It doesn't make wide tokens, but does make an increasingly tall token on every upkeep for 2 mana. And always having one zombie token guaranteed at upkeep is huge for a lot of decks.

Haven't watch the video, but want to say that I was looking exactly for that kind of video. Am back to MTG, bought a display of dominaria remastered, and while it was fun to crack them boosters, I feel like with this set, I'll only get the best singles for my decks and the ideas that I have.

One card that I'm excited for is Red Sun's Twilight. By Force is already kind of a staple for any of my Red EDH decks in addition to Vandalblast. So, for one extra red mana, getting tokens of the ramp I'm destroying really sweetens the deal for me since it mitigates the cost of itself. In more specific cases where I destroy multiple things that produce more than one mana, I could potentially get a net positive amount of mana after casting this. The pipe dream there being a sweep of Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Mana Crypt, Thran Dynamo, and Guilded Lotus or something - if they have that much on board I've likely already lost, but still. In cases where they have one high-value artifact, and I have many low-value ones, I could potentially remove a threat and turn that threat back on it's owner. Also, it says 'up to X artifacts' so (and someone will likely have to correct me on this.) the spell won't fizzle out if someone sacrifices something I'm targeting. It's also a card that says 'at the beginning of the next End Step' so it's also one of those cards Obeka likes. I don't really play Obeka, but it's worth noting here. It really feels like I potentially have a new staple card and that excites me more than anything.

Archfiend of the Dross is a perfect fit for Yahenni decks. The commander is a sac outlet if you need one, the deck runs a ton of board wipes, and has a heavy focus on killing opposing creatures to pump Yahenni up as much as possible.

Ima buy a set booster box, and a case of collectors. Not even doing it for the cards mechanics, necessarily , im just obsessed with the phyrexians and want to own some sick art. Golly, ive been waiting so long for more phyrexian sets and finally. The art is so freaking sick! PHYREXIA, I LOVE YOU, YOU COMPLEAT ME!

I don't want to be a villain but next to Bitterblossom there is also Dreadhorde Invasion. Sorry, I just had to get it out. I know it's not the exact same thing. But in my aristocrats deck it's basically a Bitterblossom without lifeloss.

Great list, I'm surprised at the sword being only a honorable mention, but you're right, the set really is jam full of powerfull commander cards. Although I have to admit, I really don't understand the prof's hatred for planeswalker, especially in commander, where they are significantly less good. I get that teferi, karn and others have been and still are oppressive in certain formats, I'd still rather face some of them than the stupid monkey, archon of cruelty or Sheoldred. Just my opinion, awesome vid oh and also wow the gratuitous jab at voyager lol

Normally I agree with the "buy singles" sentiment but there are too many great cards here; I think it will be more fun to buy a booster box and crack packs and then buy what I missed that I still feel compelled to get. Just the cards you listed alone would be more than the price of a box to pick up, but getting a box means getting copies of other cards I *kind* of want but wouldn't buy as singles, getting uncommons and commons as well I may want access to, and being surprised and having fun opening packs. But this is also the first set in awhile that I felt getting a box would be a fun way to blow $100, it's not often it happens. Alternatively, singles will probably be a better ideas a few weeks after the set is out and boxes are opened en mass, but you run the risk of a card you want blowing up in price, which can also happen.
