I do agree too, and colour looks punchy, and please to watch in hero 6, look at that flat colour of hero 5 , I had bought 6 over 5 , but sadly I lost it in India,
1080p Hero6 240fps & Hero5 120fps. You realized that is double of it frame rate right? The higher the frame rates the faster it is need to capture that numbers of frame in 1 second. This can only be achieved with higher ISO. High ISO means more noise. Try to compare shot using manual setting. Same 1080p, same frame rates & same ISO setting.
3:41 that not Grain and Thats not noise, that is the low bitrate artifact from shooting at such a high frame rate, and because the camera maxes out at like 78mbs when you shoot 240 fps each frame ends up being like 0.3mb rather than if you shot 24fps each frame would be 3mb, 4k 24 will be less compressed than 4k 60 and gopro upgraded from 4k 30 with the 5 to 4k 60 with the 6 which was nothing more than a marketing ploy considering the hero 5 maxes out at 60 abs which means to have the same quality at double the frame rates gopro should have upped the max bitrate to 120mbs but they only upped it to 78 so hero 6 is a marking ploy with a software only available on 6 which enables 60fps up to 4k but each frame is more compressed anyway ugh gopro knows common everyday consumers are dumb and will buy their products anyway. they pretty much screwed us with the hero 6.
This is something they should be able to fix with a firmware update at least. Provided the memory card interface is fast enough. Technically you should not measure mbps in the recording time space, but rather in the playback time space. Don't know why no one is measuring it that way?!?! If you record at 78mbs at 240 fps, but then play back at 24 fps to get slowmo you will play back at 7.8mbps which is nothing. So why not just measure it in 7.8mbps playback speed. Then people will get a much better idea of the quality to expect.
6 looks way better. Stabilization is better. The sky above your house looks better. Your skin looks more natural. The noise grain complaining seems nitpicky but I’m watching on an iPhone X.
I'm an a large, hires monitor on my Apple Pro (tree ashcan model) and I see NO noise at all. Maybe RU-vid's compression took it out? And I agree with the other guy that the color and Rez looks better on the 6. Sorry.
Just something to think about from a photography stand point and correct me if I’m wrong.... If you were shooting at 240fps doesn’t the image sensor have to double the ISO to achieve the same EV? If so, there is going to be more noise created.... try it using the same frame rate as the GP5 and re evaluate.
Yes, it does have to bump up ISO but there should never be that much grain with 60 fps on a sunny day like this. Perfect condition for a go pro footage. It's just bad codecs or file compression and will be fixed with the next software update, most likely. Still no go though - unacceptable!
The grain noise issue was unbearable on my computer but once uploaded it seemed to kind go go away. I will agree the colors are slightly better. But this noise grain issue was REALLY WEIRD.
The color on the 6 can be pleasing sometimes, but utterly oversaturated other times, that would vary do to personal taste. But the grain is not an aesthetic choice, it's an objective flaw.
yes but when it gets really intense it looks kinda choppy and weird. So in less intense settings its great but once the bumps pick up it looks smooth and choppy at the same time. kinda weird.
@@TheBuffNerds I completely see your point. I think this is just the way it is with one-pass stabilization. There's an edge buffer. If there's a sudden jolt to the left it eats into the right buffer to compensate and then slowly pans left to re-center. But if you get too many of those in row before the pan can correct, then it runs out of buffer and has to jump back to center. So it's smooth, until it's not, and you get smooth and chop as you say. It's like a soft suspension bottoming out. That's better than a stiffer suspension, until it's not. This creates a smoother but less natural motion. 2-pass stabilization in post can do better because it can see the future better, and adjust pan rates as needed to avoid running out of buffer, but most people don't want to mess with post.
Even when pointed out-I just do NOT see the issue. What I DO see is a VASTLY better, brighter more detail rich in EVERY way image across the board with the 6. And for ME 6 is night & day BETTER. Just no comparison BETTER on the 6. Maybe this is a joke?
I have a 6 and I love it, maybe you got a lemon straight out of the factory. Also, you might want to make sure that you are using an extreme plus 4K micro SD card for optimal recording.
My first GoPro is the 6. I'm very satisfied with the 4K footage. The video stabilization is terrific, as I've noticed pretty much all of the wobble is gone while recording on my truck while driving.
GoPro 6 having better stabilization alone is worth of upgrade. this was a mind blowing moving from Hero 5 to Hero 6. I wish I upgraded it earlier. I love to attach the GoPro directly on my vehicle and electric longboard, and the 4K footage I get on my Hero 6 is so smooth. I was never able to use the footage out of Hero 5 unless it was on a gimbal handheld. Don't listen to what other people say about the GoPro 6, test it out yourself and you can thank me later. If you want action camera with solid buttery smooth footage, this is an upgrade you have been waiting for.
I have a hero silver 4, a Hero5 black. A Smooth Q and the crane M stabilizers so I don't worry about all that stuff. NOW! considering about 99% of people watch Go Pro videos on smartphones or computer screens AND are not pixel peepers I think the problem suggested is trivial to say the least. Your not filming for movie theatres are you???
I tend to think the 6 is better quality (I'm watching on a iPad 4).... I'm seriously considering buying a GoPro... 6!... I've yet to have one... I'm sick of pulling out my bulky 4K Video Camera and inserting the sd card.. and trying to screw it onto a tripod... does anyone think a GoPro is good just for general recording stuff... like stage shows... the environment... storms... what is the quality of the sound??.. does it capture sound in stereo???
I am just looking at getting my first GoPro, so a newbie for sure. In your comparison, the 6 looks much better to me. Better colors, more natural skin tone. I guess I don't know what "noise" looks like, but just looking at the overall quality of the video, the 6 looks much better. What am I missing?
Have to say that I agree with a few others on here and didn’t see any grain issues that you pointed out in the video and the color, contrast and image stabilization looked much better on the 6.
A year later, I'm still having issues with my Hero 5: ghost turning on / off, freezing, having to pull out the battery - GoPro always has the same nonsense response "make sure you're using a compatible SD card," which I am.
Yea it was super weird in the edit timeline the noise artifacts and whatnot was OUT OF CONTROL. Now on here it's somewhat fine. I wonder if it's a codec issue while editing. Either way not something a professional product like GoPro should be having.
TheBuffNerds And yet you uploaded and keep this video up. It's the HEVC in your editor. Hero6 looks much better than the Hero5. Also, if your going to compare the two you should do so at the same fps. Do a seperate shot of 1080/240 but side by side comparison should be equal settings.
the stabilization its really good and i think that the colors on the 6 are better beside the freezing its worth the try i hope they fix the software and do an update, new product are always buggy in the lunch better wait 2 or 3 month to upgrade
Using a fast (write speed) card is a must with the new GP1 processor. Freezing is going to happen if you use the card linked to in the discription (SanDisk Ultra) which is a terrible card for GoPro cameras.

I didn't have any of these issues with mine. However, I do get occasionally get crazy white balance shifts with auto white balance. I've also had it corrupt an SD card on me. I was still able to pull the footage but couldn't write anything else to it till it was whipped.
I know i'm a bit late to the party on this but i'm getting myself a GoPro very soon. Either the 5 or the 6. Price doesn't matter. Although i'm worried about the saturation and the audio on the 6 but i definitely prefer the 6s fps. I'll use my GoPro for holiday stuffs like boating, diving and other holiday activities like traveling where an Actioncamera can come in handy. That said, what is your/anyones recommendation? Is the saturation and audio really that "bad"? Any help is appreciated.
I just bought an 5 from costco today. But your video well demonstrated 6’s big improve on video stabilization. Now I am considering if I should return.
After a little research they tell me that the problems with freezing, and other quality issues with the 6 is due to using the wrong sd card. The minimum sd card should be extreme 64 gb. Is this true, as I'm contemplating getting my first GoPro as well?
The 5 was such a leap forward. I guess it's hard to make another big jump. 4k is not a big deal for me, so the 5 is a great camera. If I need better footage, i just use a better camera.
DId you have any issues with overheating? Mine was rocket-hot day one, first use. Heat failure at around 30 minutes. Current firmware, updated right out of the box. Tech support had me do a manual update but I'm not confident that really did anything.
The 6 is more stable during stabilization and the color is way more accurate, you can see it at 3:33. However, I HATE that zoomed in look the 6 has, it drives me nuts. I also have to agree with a couple of other people that that is not grain on the 6, its artifact from shooting at a high frame rate. Still shouldn't be happening, but I am sure they will fix it with a firmware update.
Can you use the GoPro for the indoor videos as well or just for outdoor/vlogging? If so, is it worth it to buy the Hero6 if I mostly do indoor vids? Or do you recommend something differently entirely, like the canon rebel T6i
I think its not gonna do good for shooting indoor videos using hero6. I just got my hero 6 a week ago and its so annoying. So much noise. Using it outdoor with bright sunlight is good. But if the sun goes down, smartphone camera is even better.

You were talking about image stabilization on the 5 and 6 in 4k..im confused now b/c everything ive read says there is no image stable on 5 in 4k just the hero 6..am i wrong about this ?
I bought a gopro 5 black and it's a good video camera. Heck the kid in best buy caught me checking out the gopro demo stand and he came over to see if I needed help. I'll I had to do was ask him the gopro 5 was any good. He said if your gonna buy one, don't get the gp 6. In his opinion the 5 is best by far. So I was sold. It's a fun little video recorder, but for it's size, it's heavy ! I'm finally getting used to all the features it has to offer. The only downside is battery life. : ( oh, can you answer a question ? Does your gopro 5 get hot during use ?
Sounds like, from the comments, the issue is with bit rate from too high FPS combined with too high ISO. I’m new to Go Pro, just picked up the 6 yesterday, and THEN saw this video. But from what I gather, if you shoot at 4K 30FPS and keep you ISO low Eg 200-400 then picture quality on the 6 will be every bit as good as the 5. I guess I won’t have a point of comparison but once I start shooting I’m confident the quality will be just fine.
The EIS/DIS on the 6 alone is worth the extra 100 (if you're actually trying to shoot action footage) and the added bonus of 4k/1080p240 is awesome to keep it on par with an iphone 8 for only ~400. Simply put, it is the best GoPro ever made... As it should be
If your HERO6 is freezying i think The camera is great but the problem can be solve only with this SD card: SanDisk Extreme/Extreme Plus/Extreme Pro UHS Video Speed Class 30 (V30) - ≥32GB and you must update to firmware 1.6v.. My friends had this problem too and they solved with this Sd card... The quality is good... the mic is horrible you need to use mic(adapter) the stabilization is good for vlog... for actions, outdoors you need to purchase gimbal and be patient with adobe!! :)
The Go Pro hero 6 is amazing. It has amazing image stabilization at 4k as well. It gives better sharpness if your have it at the right settings. I definitely recommend it.
Is go pro is better quality video quality and stabilization compare with sony rx ? or panasonc fz2500 ? Is go pro can stand till 4 or 5 years? As my compact camera always around 5 year start some problem
I think your WB is messed up between the 2. 5 looks too yellow, 6 looks better IMO. Better in the shadows, better color reproduction. This is coming from a 5 owner... Was WB set to auto on both?
If you have the 5 there is no need to go for the 6. If you have no go pro you can go for the 6. And the only big problem I see is the H.265 codec we have to change before editing with our usual editing software... Handbrake !
btw, that grain is a result of a lower bitrate. People don't understand that you can shoot in 4k all day long, but if one shoots at 4k 8mbps and one at 1080p 20mbps the 8mbps will be noticeably shit compared to the 1080p video.
I used the 4 silver for many if my videos and it is great, but I do want to upgrade to the 6 just because of the EIS. It's one of, if not the best built in stabilizing of available action cams.

ISO 100 with auto shutter, HDR photo, Voice commands, zoom, auto burst, more responsive touch screen, reduced rolling shutter, sharper/cleaner images frame by frame, better dynamic range, better color profile, better low light, Zoom, removable/replaceable protective lens, faster Wi-Fi, wind reduction,/stereo/Protune audio... And then you have, waterproof without a case, 4K/30 & 4K/60, 2.7K/60 & 2.7/120, 1080/120& 1080/240, and of course the amazing stabilization.
Yeah, but in a practical sense, the 4 is still amazing. Realistically, I don't use half of the new options available. I did upgrade a few days ago, but it was almost entirely because of the stabilizing. I have the 4, 5 and 6 and I love them all.
Go pro said i think that they were working on a bug update for this camera that will be released in the November time frame which will sort out noise. As for the freezing up thing, a lot of people have also said this, not sure if the update will fix that or not though
maybe 1080/240 isn't good enough, but you have a better slomo in comparison to the Hero 5. Why did'nt you compare the same resolutions and framerates on both cameras (both 1080/120)? it seems that your were searching something, which is more worse on the Hero 6 in comparison to the Hero 5....
Only the problem i am having in my Gopro Hero6 is , everytime i try to connect on my phone it ask me to update , but in the middle of the update installation it losses the connection between gopro and phone and cant reconnect . but picture/video quality is obviously better than in hero5
I feel like one is not better than another. The color range switches up like the foreground is more vivid at times the other camera has better background range. The did seem to switch up on which one has Better foreground or better background coloring. I feel like it’s a toss up. If the 2 where combined I feel like it would be a great camera. The noise would go away and colors would be more vivid
Hi, we want to start recording our church sermons. Would a go pro do the job? Sermons last about 40mins and we have a zoom h2n we could speak into and sound sync them on windows movie maker?

It's most likely the bitrate at such a high frame rate. If this issue ONLY happens at 1080p at a high frame rate then the camera's bitrate simply isn't up to par which is completely understandable for a camera of the price and size. The 2.7k wide looks super clean from what I've seen but I'm pretty sure that's why. It's the same reason why the higher frame rates on the GH5 are mushy compared to some of the lower ones
The same thing happen to me. I bought it to use it at a music festival and the camera really disappointed me. I had to pay a restocking fee to return it. My Go pro 3+ did a better job, than the Go Pro 6. Keep freezing, i would turn off the camera, to find out that it was still on, even though the screen was off. Had to take out the battery to turn it off. The settings screen wouldn't go away so ones again had to take out the battery. I did this for two day, to find out that alot my footage came out bad or it didn't record, even though I had recorded. Very upset with Gopro.
sorry but i have all the go pro's since go pro 3, i can say the 6 is far better than any of them 100% but is it worth the price tag where you can just get a go pro 5 for half the price? No.
What am I missing here? All of the footage on GPH6 is far superior to the GPH5. The grain issue referred to in the video is almost undetectable on my Mac Retina 5K 27 Inch.
