Do People Play Pokemon Sword and Shield Online in 2023?

I know you said you didn't find much point to the league card mechanic, but oh gosh, I absolutely loved it when the game came out. I loved seeing peoples' different cards and design creations, and what teams they wanted to show off. Little things like that I genuinely enjoy.

I played swsh online a few weeks ago with a team that knew only metronome and almost won a battle because my dusknoir landed a horn drill 1st try.

One thing I will give to SwSh is that it's EASILY the most SPECTACLE game of all the franchise. With the huge stadiums and crowds and giant Pokémon glowing and turning the arena into shadows. It looks amazing honestly, more than HAT and Hidden Power.

Battling in a stadium is just better than battling in an office

There is something almost sad about seeing the Wild Area so devoid of players. Never thought so many people running around that the game slowed down to an elderly person's shamble would ever be something I considered nostalgic.

While these games are far from perfect, I have such fond memories of playing them that my wife and I replayed through them upon release of Scarlet and Violet 😅

It hits hard knowing SwSh is almost already four years old

Honestly I put in 600+ hours to shield and even in the last day before sv came out I caved in as it's my favorite pokemon game

I bought Pokemon Sword at release date, but I was so disappointed back then that I stopped playing pokemon altogether. I heard that Ash's story was ending, so I decided to give Pokemon Journeys a try and I love it. It made pick up Sword again and finish the game. I'm currently shiny hunting the legendaries in dynamax adventures. I might pick up LA soon and after that SV.

Literally decided to start the game over again just the other day. I’d been thinking specifically about the conclusion to Hop’s story and how much I liked it, so I decided to start fresh to see it happen again 😂

Imo Sword/ Shield looks much better than Scarlet/ Violet. It's huge downgrade in graphics.

I still play Pokémon sword and shield cause this was the first Pokémon game I played and it was super fun and it just gives me memories and I just can’t get over Pokémon sword and shield lol

The funny part is I just got sword a few days ago and still find online pretty easy to get opponents. Also I am enjoying the game just about as much as violet but I think I enjoyed violet just because it was one of the first open world pokemon games and it was right as I was really getting back into pokemon so it brought a little more hype

My little sister just started her first playthrough of sword about two weeks ago and she turned it into a monotype challenge. So she’s using only electric types 😂

I still play shield quite a lot, I really love it, I realised I never finished the dlc, and the raid battles from the dlc are also quite fun, it just seems to disconnect other players quite a lot :( so I rarely am able to finish one on my own

as someone with around 200 hours of playtime in sword i think its still a really great game to replay once in a while

These are the most recent Pokémon games I ever played (other than remakes/replaying older games). I haven't bought the DLC, and I haven't played PLA or S/V yet. While I've put literally hundreds of hours into Pokémon Shield, it certainly made me reconsider buying Pokémon games at release.

I forgot how much the swsh music slaps until I got back into it a few weeks ago

I used to really enjoy doing online battles in SwSh until they were ruined forever by allowing restricted legendaries in ranked battles. That was when Zacian and Kyogre forever absolutely ruined the fun of ranked battles.

Pokemon Violet and Scarlet competitive scene is stale: We lack literally like 80% of the Pokemons. In addition, new mons such as Greninja and Cinderace are banned from multiplayer. SV DLC drops completely at winter 2023 but there is a rumor that it will be delayed until 2024 Spring for PT 2. That means you will have to wait 8-12 months to get most mons in SV. Meanwhile you can play Sword/Shield and get almost all mons. As of this comment, Sword and Shield have 50.000 players each day, which is more than enough as games with 1000 players alone are considered a very healthy playerbase.

I just recently (finally) finished Sword and all the DLC before the release of ScarVio. While not perfect SwSh are still a good time! Need to do more Max Raid Adventure so I can get a Poi Pole for my Home Living Dex... and I need to hit Master Ball Rank so I can get the Ribbon for my Ribbon-Collecting Milotic!

I have to admit when I first played sword and shield. I didn’t realize how hated it was till 3 years later

My first pokemon game was Violet so after I finished that i went and got shield and am still playing it.. there's a ton of people still active and it's so fun

I've beat Sword, near basic 100%. All 3 pokedex's 100% and its still fun to build specific pokemon / teams and its still the easiest game by far to customize a pokemon in my opinion

It makes sense the scene on SwSh is still pretty big considering GameFreak kept SwSh being the main game instead of moving to BDSP or LA. They just kept these going until SV's release

I sincerely hope they do because I’m going back to play Sword now and get the DLC since I only ever played Shield and never ended up doing the dlc.

Despite the Indigo Disk DLC in Scarlet/Violet, from my experiences, Sword/Shield is ultimately my preference. Simply, the Isle of Armour and Crown Tundra DLC contain Pokémon that I actually like. I have found that bonding with Pokémon is quite a bit better at camps than at picnics. One big difference: once you are about to battle the Champion, in the Wild Area, almost every Pokémon will be at least level 60, which is near champion level. All of the weaker Pokémon will be relegated to the routes.

Personally I had more fun on the ranked battles here than in scarlet … also the graphics in sword r better imo (due to how crappy scarlet violet look rn :/)

The DLC really made this game fantastic. At some point I'll need to hop back on and finish shiny hunting the legendaries in the raid dens

As an overall experience I much prefer Sword and Shield to SV. Your gym journey getting soo much build up was a great experience. SV however have a muuuch better endgame story. It's just soo slow to get there

I still use the max raid den and I never fully beat the crown tundra story for the legendaries so I still play it

I still play SwSh from time to time though mostly only do Max Raid Adventures online. Use to do the League Card swaps a bit when the game came out (mostly to get some inspiration for my own league card) though haven’t done it as recently cause I’m pretty satisfied with how mine looks now and there isn’t really much of a purpose to them. Aside from that I’ve mainly been grinding the Star Tournament to be able to buy all the clothes

I only got a switch when the OLED came out and one of the first games I got was shield and I enjoyed it so much that even after scarlet and violet came out I still play it

I'm not only a very old pokemon fan....but I loved sword and shield ...better graphics better music and yes I do like the characters a lot more.

I had a lot of fun with Sword and Shield, and the DLC! Hope the Indigo Disk for Scarlet and Violet will be fun once it releases in December!

Im literally bored of violet and scarlet. I can at least use old pokemons and find legendary pokemon in dynamax den. And play galarian tournies... scarlet is boring

I was trading on Omega Ruby, and those trades were always pretty much instantly, people will always play the older games.

still playing. Gen 8 has its issues like any pokemon game but these games (keeping the DLC in mind) do some things A LOT better then gen 9. I genuinely think in a few years time people will look a bit more fondly at gen 8 then they currently do.

I still love SwSh. Admittedly I have been playing SV a lot more because the open world is amazing and still finishing my last few dex entries but I’d love to return to SwSh and make a new save and shiny hunt the Legendaries in Max Dens and complete the DLC Dex’s.

I still play it, lol. I only got a Switch in late 2020 and my time was spent playing Animal Crossing. Then I got Arceus and moved on to other games. Finished Violet but I want more so I went and continued playing Pokemon Sword.

Arkoos and SV have slowed my time in Galar down quite a bit, but I still spend time in there too.

I just got my nephew into pokemon and he agreed he liked gen 2 and 3 games more (more challenging and less hand holding) also he enjoys sword more than scarlet. He said scarlet was too easy and boring

Cant forget the insane shiny odds in dynamax adventures, 1/300 normal odds and an insane 1/100 with shiny charm, easiest way to get shiny legendaries by far

Sword and shield don’t deserve the hate they get, they really are great games. This is coming from someone who doesn’t enjoy the postgame of Pokémon usually (completing pokedex) but I did this one and had a blast. The dlc is great too

I hope so. Four sword and shield is a pretty fun games, I have caught lots of shiny Pokémon’s. Recently came across my dream psychic Galar Pokémon in Violet which I try to make it shiny in sword and shield, planning on transferring the shiny Galar one in Sh as soon as the Pokémon home is updated. If players are still playing Sw&Sh.

I honestly jump back in sometimes just because the music when you dynamax is fun and I like the galarian star tournament

Even thought scarlet and violet are definitely upgrades in terms of gameplay for me, i actually think sword and shields graphics are better, also i like the selection for pokemon to shiny hunt a bit more in swsh. I will miss dynamaxing as well, but i think terrastalizing is slightly better because you can use that gimick almost anywhere in the game, for dynamaxing, you could pretty much only use it in arenas or very large battle courts. the character customization is way better in swsh too. In that game you could change pretty much everything about your character appearance wise. In sv, you can only change like your hat, shoes, bag, and thats pretty much it, you are pretty much stuck in your school uniform 24/7 and it makes the characters way less personilized and unique looking. One more thing ill miss is being able to go in almost any building, in scarlet and violet, there are a very little amount of buildings you can actually go inside, and thats a small feature i actually miss

Until Scarlet and Violet get and update to fix preferments I will never play again unplayable and also the dens bug out and can't make a move getting text chat blockeds every 3 sec.

I've gotten good help getting legendaries in Max raid adventures. I'm half way done with them. Idk why I never did this back in the day

Sword and Shield suffered the same fate as “green shinies”. Like when people such as Aura Guardian got popular on RU-vid and consistently said how terrible green shiny Pokémon were, everything just went with it because they don’t have their own personality. The games I have 200+ hours in each are Soul Silver and Black 2. I have 300+ hours in Shield. These games are beautiful, very fun, have plenty of replay ability and are more active at the moment because of the atrocities of Scarlet & Violet.

I played SwSh alot I finished the main story and post story within 3 days and Im now in the master ball tier in the battle tower it was a great game and it gives memories

I just checked back with my old SwSh game a while ago. I put in hundreds of hours between multiple accounts back in the early days of COVID. It wasn't perfect, but I hold it as a special place as it kept me from going insane back then.

I still go to my shield game to play the cave raids. I also use it to hold most of my Pokemon because I'm too cheap to pay for the the space in Pokemon home. Lol

Just a note: there are people doing hacked shiny clobbopus raids. I remember this because of a wonderlocke I did.

I came back to these games quickly since just recently I began my living dex. I am at around 700 so far... Gonna have to play omega ruby, crystal, and ultra moon again... I always reset my save files and play them every once in a while so it's not like I can just go back and collect pokemon in those games. I have to restart the ENTIRE game.

If you want my answer to your question. No. Their hasn't been any good online gifts for these versions to be worth my time playing them. And forget online battling. Ether way, you eventually have to pay a small fee to get online. I'm focusing on gen 3 & 7 instead.

Pokemon Sword & Shield were great games to play. I loved the online battles & story

I got this game like 3 years ago along with my first ever Nintendo Switch(v2) and I played it for a few days then I put it down cause I was obsessed with another game on my PC at the time, then up until like a few days ago I started playing it again and I can’t put it down, I even found out I can transfer Pokémons from Pokémon Go which I did! I’m gonna get a Nintendo Switch OLED and get Pokémon Violet when I do.

Yes i had shield and then bought sword and enjoyed it more for the easiness with starters sobble and grooky. I really enjoyed gen 8 especially inteleon as it could be seen as a 007 pokemon 😂

Some things in SWSH is more fun than SCAVio , dynamax is better than terasralize for me too

I loved searching for league cards! I always thought it was cool to see how people customized their characters and enjoyed reading the stats

this to be honest doesnt suprise me as someone who started playing pokemon ultra sun way after swsh were out you can still get into online battles to this day

I recently sold my switch lite and tought I had backed up my saved data for when home was available for scarlet and violet... turns out I didn't so I am replaying the whole thing now and it's been a lot of fun.

I still play Sw/Sh mostly for the raid adventures, but I also like to surprise trade on occasion! I never got into the battling for this gen because of the timer. Which, is a shame, since I loved playing competitive in gen 7.
