Powerpads are multifunctional. They increase the length of the mains, by a percentage, which increase the rebound potential on those strings. They also dampen the strings that they are attached to.

They’re only useful for protecting natural gut from premature breakage at the throat grommets...

If the pads are made of a flexible material like rubber they should also increase the "elastic effect" of the strigs connected to it.

I did the whole progression of testing power pads. For example I had a Babolat with "woofer" grommets. No change. In a few other racquets where the gromment have sharp corners and the mains are stuck in place, does make a noticeable difference.

As I remember, pros who use power pads on the main are Fed, Del Potro, Safin, Dimitrov and Tommy Haas.

I used power pads when I strung my pro staff. It does have a dampener effect. And, I like the feel of it in a 6.1 or the 7.5. It is great dual purpose of protection and dampening. The micro amount of string lengthening is a tiny aid for the string bed. Every little bit helps!

My understanding of powerpads is that it makes the mains longer which increases power slightly, might be easier to notice using gut over poly as it's more powerful in general.

The power pad will give you a bit more dwell time, so the ball holding onto the racket a bit longer will allow more spin. Also it will be a softer feel, so better for stopping tennis elbow. So in effect you are making the string stretch/give when hitting the ball. A young guy at my tennis club used them at the top and the bottom of his racket.

Basically an artifact from the wood racquet/gut string days. Might serve to extend the life of gut and absorb shock from stiff poly strings in modern racquets. Power pads? easier to say than "string and frame protective sharp corner radius increasing devices".

From my experience, using a dampener reduces string tension on the strings it touches about a couple of pounds so these power pads can be a better option. I will consider this, thanks.

In smaller head sizes they would be even more noticeable as smaller heads are more sensitive to change... in my opinion that's why Federer used it early days as he started with the 85, and just stuck with it in his 97 as tennis players wouldn't really change these little things (ie your nice framed fed 97 racket)....it opens up the sweat spot just a bit more and provides dampening which is great. To clarify imho you would notice it in a smaller head sizes a heck of a lot more and prefer the older rackets like me...

After trying I just can't return to rackets without power pad. It gives me slight dampening (about 40% of O-ring style dampener) without noticeable altering the swing weight and a bit more feel. However, honestly I don't see any really noticeable increase in power. But still, I love power pad. (1. I currently own Pro Staff 97 V.10, V11, V13, with and without power pad direct comparison; 2. I only have power pad on throat, not the sides).

I have used Power Pads mostly when using natural gut to cushion the string at the frame holes and to hopefully prevent breakage and extend the string life. I think they work for that and to dampen the feel a bit. More power? Nahhh!

Why does every company have a different metrics when it comes to strings? Why use 15, 15L, 16, 16L etc. when it’s a different mm from every company? Example: 16L can be 1.25mm and 17 can be 1.25mm.
@j1mster3
@j1mster3 Год назад
to deceive/confuse you from the real number(metric) so that you buy the thinner than it is and you break it faster and keep re-buying.
@mcooper7743
@mcooper7743 Год назад
@@j1mster3 possibly so. It worked for me when I bought confidential in 17. Broke after a couple hours.
@ZeroLoveTennis
@ZeroLoveTennis Год назад
It might be due to shape. If a string is square, what's it's gauge? The thinner or thicker "radius"? Thinnest might need 17 but the thicker might be 16 so they average it out and say 16L
@monsoonfu5655

They make no difference in a full poly setup. Tried them extensively and they make no difference. It is just from old days of wooden racquets and gut. It would lift up the gut a bit from the grommet edges so it doesn’t saw into the gut.

Power pads do they give you more power….? Little, very, ver little, so little power that 99% of the worlds population cannot tell the difference. Calling it a power pad is a misleading statement for many decades now. What it does, do is increase the length of the main strings. Let me explain in Layman’s terms compare a Prince Original Graphite to a Wilson Pro Staff 6.0 85. The Prince POG has significantly more power, but that’s down to long (ver long) main strings. Now days if you look at the Babolat Pure Aero, look at the throat grommets they rounder and increase the length of the main strings (ever so slightly). Power pads actually protect strings, used back in the day when gut was used….and Pro’s use them today for the same purpose….to protect the gut….let it last longer especially in areas where there is a extreme curvature or the main strings. Let me give another example I’m playing with Yonex Ezone’s DR98 and I was always snapping the mains no.5 at the throat (count from the centre 5 left and right), this is where the curvature of the string is ‘extreme’. After putting power pads, or leather pads (not to mislead), I never snapped a string in those zones again.
