What sets the Beatles and Elvis apart from other artists is that they had an “artistic breakthrough.” Like at the beginning, they might have been considered heartthrobs that were mainly teen girl things. But then they gathered a larger demographic with their experimental sounds (especially in the case of The Beatles). But don’t assume that BTS will never win a Grammy (assuming you’re alluding to BTS). All BTS has to do is get experimental and turn music into a greater artwork.

@@satine2342 agree. they are actually good artists. but some older people still don't appreciate some modern artists today even though they are artistically great and experimental just because they are fangirl-ed/fanboy-ed by younger generations.

They are relying heavily this year on BTS's fans to pull up attendance records, and then moved the only category that they deigned to give BTS a nomination in (Pop Duo) to the preshow, along with Rap (POC nominees) and R&B (POC nominees) Forbes put out an article last year with a closing line that I think applies to artists like The Weeknd, as well as BTS: "As BTS continues smashing records and the Grammys continue to lose relevance, who really needs who?"
@18becbec

Absolutely... I think BTS are a great example of a group for whom winning a Grammy (though good god they should have been in a better category than this) would actually be really meaningful in their career. I want to say the Grammys don't matter, but I think that's in a US context more than an international one. I hope they win, but either way, I'm going to feel like the Grammys nominated them for the Academy's and show's own benefit, not the artistry 🤷

Something I am always bitter about is the neglecting of nominating kpop. People usually diss the genre, but if you are familiarized with kpop you will know that there's some fine music, take BTS, they have really transgressive and defining music, GOOD music, and they've never got nominated till they bent to the system and made a song fully in english. It's a blatant act of gatekeeping and a bit racist.
@thecatoverlord8589
@thecatoverlord8589 3 года назад
Maybe the Grammys will create a category for kpop (even tho its pop) in the next decade, since it took a decade for rap to have a category. Basically they're gonna put them on the sidelane just like what they do to POC to stay in the Rap and Rnb categories only but who knows 🤷

I think the problem is when they start manufacturing inauthentic, not super talented artists and idols to milk money out of teen girls... most of the newer gen are like that, and it has been for like 30 yrs with the creation of NKOB to basically have a white, more marketable version of New Edition, times are different than say when the Beatles were around. I'm not saying all groups that were basically record company ideas are bad but at times it just seems like what media tells teens to be into seems super shallow and inauthentic. And this is coming from a Jonas Brothers fan from childhood (whom I consider a "real" group because they were around and struggling long before signing with Disney)

As a teenage girl who is going into adulthood in the coming years, I look back and realise how upsetting it is. I'm a huge Taylor Swift fan, but I put it off for so long because I was so concerned about what others would think or say. It's stupid, Swift is an excellent songwriter and extremely talented. Additionally, loving her art does not mean I cannot enjoy other artists such as The Strokes, The Beatles and more (just thinking of my top artists). I was a very insecure young girl. I still am, but I care less. I know that many others do/have done that. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realise that you can't please everyone and those who judge others music tastes are just idiots. I hope that made sense EDIT: I would like to say - Kandrick should have won that Grammy. Just because I'm a fan of hers doesn't mean i don't recognise that x

Or maybe teenage girls should learn/be taught to enjoy what they like without people's opinions altering that enjoyment, since that's actually a good general life lesson. As a woman these statements rub me the wrong way. It's like you want women and girls to be coddled. They are able to stand on their own two feet. Teen boys are able to easily brush off girls and women calling things like wrestling and call of duty stupid and meaningless, why do we expect girls and women to be so emotional, why do we perpetuate the stereotypes we claim to be breaking down? And to me, a lot of media aimed at teen girls happens to be shallow. It's not an insult to the audience. It's an insult to the people who make that media who see young girls as more gullible. You're calling the wrong people misogynists. I'm not letting someone accuse me of having so called 'internalised misogyny' just because I think media like Twilight and early 2010s Justin Bieber is shallow and derivitive in its actual content. But ultimately I accept that people like, what they like. It's their life.

Like I’ve said in other replies related to the Beatles, the Beatles gained a wide demographic WHILE they existed. Their “heartthrob” years were in the beginning and they mainly attracted a demographic of teenage girls. But in a few years, after they became more artistic, the Beatles had a wide variety of people listening to them. What sets 1D, Backstreet Boys, and BTS apart is that they never had their artistic era where they attracted a wide variety of people. So that’s technically not true. @@satine2342 i don't know that much about 1D or the backstreet boys (or the beatles, tbh) but as a bts fan, i'd hazard to say that bts's entire career has pretty much been their 'artistic era'. they started out by criticizing the strict schooling system in south korea and gradually transitioned towards explorations of youth and growing up. they then launched the love yourself series which explored different types of love and how hard it can be to accept yourself in the face of it. their map of the soul series has explored jungian psychology and their relationships with fame. most recently their be album was largely about the pandemic and explored feelings of loneliness and unease they expericed. and on top of all of that, they've included songs that critique specific aspects of korean society in almost all of their work. (and various members have been credited on these projects, its not just some production team that dreamed all this up for them. bts have been very involved since the beginning) have they ever been publically acknowledged as being in an 'artistic era' the way they beatles were? no. but that doesn't mean it hasn't been happening. also bts are HUGE worldwide which seems like a pretty diverse fanbase. check where they performed when they toured in 2018/2019. and recently the IFPI named them the best-selling artists worldwide in 2020 with three different albums in the top 10. you can't do all of that with just teenage girls or one specific demographic. my point with this comment isn't to force you to become a bts fan, but just to dispel some of the rumors that have been surrounding their career and that work to discredit their achievements. (although if anyone wants some recommendations i'll gladly drop some ;) if you talk to almost any bts fan who's been around for a second, we'll tell you that one of the main reasons we stick around is for their artistry. they're not just some passing fad of hot men or whatever people want to think.

@@jayyone6137 Agreed. As a former BTS fan myself, one of the reasons BTS had been so big is that they challenges societal norms especially in their home country. When I mention an artist’s “artistic era,” I don’t always mean lyrics or intention. I’m usually talking about musical complexity. The Beatles always used instruments, but later on in their career, they incorporated a band and an orchestra into their works. And BTS hasn’t reached the point where they have enough independence to do that. And some might argue BTS’ music production quality has dropped. On top of that, BTS carries on the same musical trends (trap beats, autotune, etc). But with the Beatles and other artists (like Queen, Radiohead, etc.), they became popular because they made music that was never done before. So I’m not necessarily casting doubt on BTS, they just have to gain independence and try new things :)

Listen, it isn’t just BTS who lacks the right amount of recognition. So many other artists face that. You’re also speaking to a proud Beyhive member. She has been in the industry for over 20 YEARS. And she takes huge initiative in writing and singing. While Beyoncé isn’t a Jack of all trades kinda musician, her most powerful instrument is her voice. She has the ability to take older styles and genres and mix them in with more modern ones to create unique sounding music. Like the Beatles, Beyoncé is one of the main pioneers for the “visual album,” which is an album with a music video for every track. She puts emphasis on the “ALBUM,” Not singles. Dancing is also one of her strong suits. If you watch any of her documentaries, she is a total boss and a perfectionist. To me, she’s the most hard-working woman in the music industry. Remember that when she was young, people didn’t take her seriously either (especially as a black woman). But she gained experience and worked hard.

I'm a bts fan and it's heavily known in the fandom that bts is used for views and ratings. Grammys already has problems as this video points out, don't get me started on asian representation and the latin grammy awards. But as a bts fan and a historian, bts won't win the award bc the grammys have never given an award to boybands the case seen with backstreet boys. Mots7 deserved a nom, not dynamite.
@bleh4824
@bleh4824 3 года назад
For real. MOTS:7 felt almost like a magnum opus, something that captured so much of BTS' determination, fear and hope in just one album, and On is one of their strongest title tracks to date. They clearly put so much effort into the album and the Grammys just ignored it completely to go for the happy song entirely in English. I'm not saying MOTS:7 is their best work (though it's definitely one of my favourites), but it was an album that deserved rewarding for all it managed to convey. I would've been happy with BE as well, because we got so many amazing songs from that one too, as well as an exploration of BTS' feelings on quarantine and COVID-19 and their attempts to stay happy and hopeful in such dark times but because they're a pop boy band made up with people of colour, with only one member that speaks English fluently, they're likely never going to recognised, no matter how experimental and thought-provoking they get. I don't mean any disrespect to anyone who enjoys Dynamite but it's not one of their stronger songs in my opinion and the sole reason it even got a nomination was because it was in English.
@FatimaZahra-lu8bf
@FatimaZahra-lu8bf 3 года назад
@Winifred Eghrudje idk, on one hand i agree with you, but on the other, bts have said multiple times that being able to perform there matters more to them than the award, and I want to support their performance. i also think it's okay to say MOTS7 *and* Dynamite deserve the nomination and the award, idk why y'all trash dyna so much. Would it be in my top 150 bts songs? probably not. but there's no reason to undermine it like that when the intention behind releasing the song was to have it be something light and packed with positive energy in a time where things were bleak for a lot of people. I think it achieves exactly what it intends to and some of the attitude within the fandom towards it is bothersome
@bleh4824
@bleh4824 3 года назад
@@FatimaZahra-lu8bf I said I had nothing against the song, I just personally believe they have stronger songs. I'm not hating on anyone for liking it, it's perfectly fine as a song and it serves its purpose (to inspire joy and happiness in dark times), so if you enjoy it, more power to you! My opinion shouldn't dictate your tastes. My main problem with the nomination for Dynamite is mainly because it was so painfully obvious that the only real reason it was nominated was that it was English. It's not their strongest work (in my opinion) and it's a little grating to see their Korean songs pushed aside in favour of their English one. I think that's the main reason the fandom has such a turbulent relationship with it. It's gotten the most radio play, so many performances, covers, etc, gone viral and broken records... But it feels a little hollow because it's clear that it only achieved it because the English-speaking audiences embraced it solely because it was in English. And it's a little frustrating to see that.
@FatimaZahra-lu8bf
@FatimaZahra-lu8bf 3 года назад
@@bleh4824 No, I 100% agree, I much prefer their other songs and find them Grammy worthy, but I don't see any reason to put Dyna down in order to lift the others up, y'know? It *is* obvious that Dyna was nominated because the RA actually listened to it and they actually listened to it because it's in English; however, this is not the fault of Dyna but rather the fault of the RA. It baffles me when people say "black swan/on" should be nominated instead but BTS didn't even submit them (I think they chose Dyna instead because of a) their lack of success with their previous songs and b) Dyna was an actual hit). Of course it isn't their strongest work, but I don't think they released it with the intentions that "this is going revolutionise the world" (as Yoongi said, they had already worked hard on darker themes for MOTS7, and wanted a break from that and do something fun to cheer themselves and the world up, and I think this is reflected in their approach to Dynamite). So the sentiment that "BTS have great songs that deserve a Grammy nom/award" can exist without adding "instead of Dynamite" to it because I feel like that undermines the song and the group. But that's just my two cents.

And like how you showed, the whole artistic yardstick in itself is so subjective, made even worse if the demographic of the people making decisions is a small and select one. That’s why it’s crazy when artists that sell amazingly worldwide, like The Weeknd and BTS that topped IFPI, are snubbed like that. Isn’t there a reason why they’re so popular then? If they don’t fit the artistic metric, then that’s just like what they did to Rock N Roll. @@lisacox3750 Canadians can be somewhat protective of our musicians and actors, and I think part of that is because of the population size differences and the cultural influence from the US. We have an internalized perception of ourselves as a small fish swimming against the current. A lot of our accomplishments; from music, arts, sports, and medicine, end up moving to the US or being thought to have come from the US because it’s easier to make money. Even some businesses can have an easier time working with US customers rather than across provincial boarders. A common criticism from young or immature fans is that moving to the US to pursue larger opportunities is a social equivalent to denouncing their Canadian citizenship. I think this is a dumb criticism, and most people grow out of it by the time they graduate high school, but it does affect artists mentally and emotionally. We don’t criticize other business or classically trained musicians in the same way. I knew a band years ago that was starting to see some success and had to make a decision about whether or not to pursue US audiences and the chance of a more stable career. They talked about how the label wasn’t going to support them internationally unless they moved to the States, but that would mean a social perception of abandoning their home. The band stayed in Canada and broke up a few years later because of internal struggles and a lack of external support. **EDIT: just to clarify after reading this again, I see the Grammys as an American award similar to how a Juno is a Canadian award or Victoires is a France music award. I encourage artists to pursue different audience or move to a different country if that’s what they want to do. My criticism of US assimilation is that Canadian artists are pushed to move to the States to receive support from their label and the industry. It’s expensive and time consuming to get artist visas to work and perform in the States, so most small or independent artists aren’t able to it on their own.

I don’t remember Alessia getting pushed as much as JB or The Weeknd, and she performed at the Grey Cup a few years ago so I thought she still lived in Canada which would have saved her some harassment. I wouldn’t be surprised if The Weeknd and Shawn Mendes got it similar to Avril and Drake. The band that I was referring to in my second comment was Die Mannequin, but that’s a little different. When Care started her band she created a private label to retain ownership of her music and art. Any label that she worked with for distribution or marketing wouldn’t make as much money off her as someone they signed to an album deal. There was probably less insensitive for the label to promote the band because of that.

I think the Grammys are doomed from the beginning. 1. It was built on a foundation of exclusivity with genres and white male artists being "better" 2. Music has no (maybe not yet) standardized scale/rating that encompasses the cultural impact, popularity and how well written it is 2.a. Even if there was a scale, music will always be a personal experience so everything's subjective anyway 3. Trends move faster than the crusty boomers in charge can see it. They probably still think BTS means behind the scenes

tbh i feel like it's unfair to BTS to constantly chalk up the (limited for their impact) attention their music gets to "the enthusiams of teenage girls" when they have a very diverse fanbase (i'm 26) and make truly incredible music. Also if they were at the whims of bts' fans it wouldn't have taken 4 years of chart domination and an english track (a great joyful song regardless that bts brought a ton of charisma to) for bts to get a single nomination and not even in a main category, they are up against a ton of gatekeeping. I wish you would have reviewed their album BE for example. They're the biggest music act in the world right now (check IFPI) yet don't get the critical attention and acclaim i genuinely think they deserve because of stereotypes like this rooted in misogyny ("boyband ew bad teen girls silly etc") or xenophobia ("kpop ew bad music robots homogenizing takes etc"). idk i just wish ppl would think more thoughtfully about them and really give their music a chance to shine on its own merits. think to yourself if another artist released this who i was more familiar with or had a different image would i think it was better or more valid.

I love Dynamite, but I still don't get why nominate them until they realeased an english single when this year they also had Black Swan, clearly if BTS didn't release any english song the Academy wouldn't nominate them. But they hate the grammys and to the same time present their albums for consideration. as Blinding Lights was 2020 biggest single worldwide according to IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) so was BTS' Map Of The Soul: 7 the biggest album worldwide. what these two have in common? no Grammy nominations. sure Dynamite was nominated as it should have been. it was the 10th biggest single worldwide also according to IFPI, it was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 3 weeks and surprise, surprise it's still charting at the moment. but nominating them in only ONE Pop category which was Best Pop Duo/Group Performance which for years consisted of just collaborations(?!?), then announcing that they will perform at the ceremony which they have always wanted, then moving this category along other categories which were dominated by POC to the preshow which was live on youtube and not on TV, to give the Grammy to a collaboration that everyone forgot about in 2020 and that didn't have that much of an impact in the charts of US or anywhere outside of it TO FINALLY USE BTS' PERFORMANCE TO KEEP 'HOSTAGE' THEIR FANS SO YOU CAN SAVE YOUR RATINGS FOR A THIRD YEAR IN A ROW ??? this was the third year they used BTS' success and fans for clout. and I can assure you as a BTS fan outside of the US I never cared about Grammys, not really, but they wanted to perform there one day and maybe even win one of the awards so of course, I wanted that for them. and yeah now I'm disappointed and pissed and a part of me wants for BTS to never seek validation from the US ever again. they are the biggest Pop act at the moment with or without a Grammy and a part of me wants them to do the same thing as Abel did: to also boycott these western award shows but then I remember what Twitter user @alapadma2 said: "Of course I want BTS to ignore the Grammys like other artists have done. But we need to understand that that's a privilege Western artists have. This is their industry, while BTS are outsiders. The Grammys would love it if an outside, resistive force stopped challenging them." so the other part of me wants for them to break the last glass ceiling because that's what they have been doing for the last years: breaking records and glass ceilings. make themselves visible and taking a chair at the table where it was possible and not where they created a separate table just for them (I'm not forgetting you VMAs don't worry). to conclude I will leave here a quote from a Forbes article "But as BTS continue smashing records and the Grammys continue to lose relevance, who really needs who?"

The big issue with any sort of rewards being given out by the people in the field, is that people are going to reward their friends or people they admire not the actual work. But then who is going to give out the rewards and award people who probably wouldn’t even be nominated in the first place. Knowing albums could be kicked off lists it feels like The Weeknd was probably kicked off any nominations this year for other artists. I am a swiftie yet I find it annoying how she can be nominated and win so many awards while Kendrick Lamar can make three of the best rap albums of all time and get one Grammy for it. That being said him winning the Pulitzer for damn is a higher compliment than any amount of Grammy awards.

There being biases in award shows is no secret in any of these award shows (Oscars, Grammys, Golden Globes, etc). Many of the nominees/productions companies/record labels will send “gifts” (monetary things such as expensive jewelry, expensive vacations, etc) to many of the people in the committee to insure a spot in the nomination list, or even to win the award(s) Example here is Harvey Weinstein who “campaigned” for his movies to get in the nomination list, and to even win at the oscars. Many great deserving pieces of fine arts (Music, Flim, etc) don’t get the recognition they deserve because a lot of these awards aren’t always purely based on merit, but [again] “campaigning” (buying “gifts” to the voters in the various academies). One big example being ‘Shakespeare In Love’ winning over ‘Saving Private Ryan’ for best picture: (You can start from around the beginning) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6tihITlPAn4.html (Go about the 6:35 mark) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z4GvecFjLkU.html

But the thing though is that even if they weren't awarding their friends or people they admire, even if they were looking at their actual work, it still wouldn't matter, it would still be an unfair and rigged game because of personal taste. You can deem something to be a masterpiece and there will still be people who won't see it as a masterpiece because of their own personal taste which they have every right to have and is valid, and yet it doesn't mean that the piece is bad or that they are wrong. And what someone else claims to be a masterpiece you might not see it but again, it doesn't mean the thing is bad, you just don't like it and may not even have a specific reason for that, you just don't. And THAT'S the real problem. People are too different in their music range tastes. Someone from the Academy might listen to "Every breath you take" by the Police and dislike it while someone else also from the Academy might like it and bc of that, the song gets at least one vote, which is probably what happened with the song when it won best song many years ago. I'm sure there was at least ONE person in the Academy who was not a fan of the song and to them, it probably didn't deserve to win. That's why I feel like award shows like these shouldn't even exist. It's so hard to pinpoint something being good or bad when what's good and bad is subjective and relevant to the person's thoughts about it. And also, like, what happens when multiple artists have achieved the same thing? Do they all receive the award? I feel like awards like these should be given only for straight up facts. Who's the most streamed ever in the year, you can actually fact check that and compare numbers and give an award to the winner. Achievement for the most collaborations, you can actually fact check that, artist who has the longest song, artists who has the most variety of genres in an album or idk im making shit up lol but my point is it should be shit like that, things that can be literally measured in numbers and not voted on by random ass people.

There should be a RU-vid Critics Academy featuring Mic, Mark from Spectrum Pulse, Anthony Fantano, Jon from ARTV, Luke from Rocked, Shawn Cee, the members of Dead End Hip Hop, Todd in the Shadows, the Rap Critic, and whoever else you can find.

I like this idea as a starting point, but that could easily run into a similar systemic issue. So I’d entrust Mic the Snare and people of similar brilliance to figure out how to collaborate with an actually representative, diverse consumer base in order to shape the new Academy itself.

Not sure why anyone expects anything from the Grammys. At least in the Olympics it's pretty cut and clear which person crosses the finish line (though admittedly less clear who twirled the ribbon the best) but when it comes to who acted the hardest or sang the coolest that's a bit less objective.

There's an upper limit to the subjectiveness though? How does a Macklemore's album win over GKMC? It almost does not matter whether one likes Mackemore's album more, it's pretty undeniable that GKMC is the more noteworthy album. No one is gonna remember The Heist in 10 years.

Honestly just pisses me off how sexist and even internally mysoginistic the opinion of "fanatic teen girls" is. yes I'll admit they can get a bit too "excited" (which is how media always paints them) but why is that a bad thing? Can't we let people enjoy the things they love? Have you seen what football fans are like? Yet No one constantly ridicules or patronizes them for their taste and passions. The Beatles were dismissed for there large young female fan base, yet they're remembered as some of the greatest musical artists in history. These artists are liked for a reason and it's very disrespectful to dismiss them because of the harmful and sexist stereotypes portrayed onto the fan base. As well as being majorly generalizing to the fan base. (And yes I know that some of these fans take shit way too far, to the extend of stalking and physically harming these artists. And I do not condone that behaviour nor do I class them as real fans). But why is it when women like something it is used against her to ridicule her and even used to emasculate a man if he may share her interests?

They tend to pick music males consider bad. Either an act will be filled with screaming females or an act will be filled with screaming males. However, most females stick to fewer acts which means they get much more say on what shows up on the Hot 100. males are more varied in what they listen to so their "votes" are spread too thin to have acts show up on the Hot 100.

Their bad reputation didn't come from nowhere. Remember when teenaged girls sent death threats to Selena Gomez because she was dating Justin Bieber? How many people stepped in to stop this toxic behaviour? Also, football fans are regularly condemned for their loutish behaviour, so false comparison.

If there's one thing with the Grammys that I think is better now is the fact that in the past decade they've largely stuck to rewarding big-name artists and big charting hits save for the occasional outlier like Beck and Arcade Fire. It's at least better than rewarding artists past their prime as an equivalent of a lifetime achievement award as they did with Steely Dan, Herbie Hancock, U2, etc.

6:25 also noteworthy is one of the albums beaten by Christopher Cross, was "The Wall", by Pink Floyd, who never won a Grammy for any of their albums. They did go on to win Best Rock Instrumental Performance for "Marooned" in 1995 (no I don't remember that one either), so they arguably did better than Bowie did in his lifetime.

Honestly the fact that Sonic Youth, a band who had a long, fruitful career and produced some of the greatest, most groundbreaking and influential rock music ever recorded, was not once even nominated for a Grammy in their entire 30-year-long career proves a lot of the points made here. The Grammys exist to celebrate the status quo of the music industry, shying away from promoting anything threatening to the status quo like Sonic Youth, who influenced the likes of Nirvana and Radiohead.

Being a citizen from a non white non English speaking country I never paid much attention to the Grammys until this year only because bts was nominated. Its because the boys care ,the fans care fully knowing that they don't really need a grammy. I guess they see this as a final frontier to acheiving everything. Even now the lack of a Grammy can fuel them to keep creating lot of good music. Once they get it, I imagine they would be like "what next? We have already achieved world domination and the status of an icon"

I think the Grammys should stop branding themselves as "THE music award show" because they clearly don't know what they are doing with that dang committee of their's and they are only picking from songs that are huge in America (and they still pick and choose what THEY want while snubbing POC artistes and if not shoving them into tiny boxes) while ignoring a whole lot of good songs that aren't in English or Spanish
