In case anyone is curious - for Best Engineered Album Non-Classical, I'm pulling for either Yebba or Low to win. I prefer the Yebba album on a musical level, but the Low record was a marvel of engineering. Thanks for watching!
This happened multiple times before, an artist could be dropping music for ages but if only recently caught mainstream attention then they're up for BNA
I’m half expecting olivia rodrigo to do the Billie eilish move and be nominated for everything and win most of it cos she’s the crowd pleaser. I don’t want it, but im expecting it to happen
I WANT to want Doja to win but Dr. Luke sneaking into award consideration again (he has a songwriting credit on Kiss Me More and multiple credits on Planet Her as a whole) is so exhausting and infuriating
Thank you for saying that, I completely forgot he worked on that. Makes me feel a bit better because I felt like she should've won best pop album over Olivia.
@@juliaostlund9360 No, but they changed the way they do the awards for the albums this year. If MONTERO had won, all the featured artists (and I believe all the producers, which would have included Kanye) would have received Grammys, as well as Lil Nas X.
Jon Batiste Won. First black artist to win album of the year....in 14 years I feel like people forget that a lot of the people who vote our musicians who will go more for what they find most musically aesthetically pleasing over what was the most popular or culturally impactful it's sometimes all of those things converge but then other times they don't in people's respective opinions because of the end of the day music is subjective
I'd say Olivia is talented and has achieved a good deal, but I don't want her to win all the awards, that'll be boring af. I'd rather they split the awards. I've actually enjoyed many of the songs here despite the way people tend to thrash mainstream music and award shows in general. I agree with the assessment & predictions here. Though for Album of the Year, I think they might go for the sentimental vote with "Love for Sale" Gaga & Bennett, or with Lil Nas in attempt to signify their shift to more diversity
Nas X deserves some wins for montero cause it was just a genuinely good album and song but I can't help but feel like him winning will be used by the academy to signal that they're good now. Rodrigo also deserves wins but I do think shes the safest choice and they might have her sweep cause of that
@@ForestGreenSharpie I’d personally like to see him get melodic rap, aoty, and either song or record. I think he will get video (but surprises happen). But, it won’t happen, and I don’t want to see a sweep. I actually think he’s got a good shot at melodic rap and video. I’d like to see him take one of the other three, but I really don’t think he will. I just hope he doesn’t leave empty handed. If he got AOTY, so would Doja, Jack, Elton John, Miley, and Megan-and Kanye, I believe.
@@6li8storm40 yeah I don't see nas sweeping if anyone sweeps its rodrigo. nas deserves wins but he's not what the academy likes to reward while rodrigo is exactly the type they like to have sweep.
@@josjoererg exactly i really like doja i just wish her nominated song wasn’t produced by dr luke 💔 he’s sneaking his way back to the top of the industry
@@josjoererg I know about her ties to him & there are awards in which he’ll get if she wins. But there are awards that’s she’s up for that he won’t get if she wins. Those awards I have bigger hopes for.
I think the fact that genuinely innovative rock artists like black midi and Black Country New Road getting snubbed from the rock nominations to fit in fucking AC/DC continues to show the fundamental problem of the Grammys. Absent from the alternative nominations too despite massive critical praise for Cavalcade and For the first time, which again speaks volumes. I reckon that if Ants From Up There doesn't get nominated for next year's Grammys there will be riots.
They only started getting big this year. They changed the rules on who is eligible years ago. That’s how Doja Cat got nominated in 2021 even though she’s been around since 2013.
I spent the last few days listening to every album nominated. Oh no, I like Jon Batiste the most?!?! Even if that is my opinion, I can't shake the feeling of nepotism. How weird, that the guy that is the band leader for the CBS late night show got the most nominations for the show that airs on CBS?
I’m really biased, but I’d really want to see Olivia Rodrigo and Lil Nas x both win at least one award each. Both Sour and Montero defined my 2021 in some way or another. I also think it’s really cool that the bridgerton musical is nominated, and although I’m not sure they’ll actually win, it would be really fun if they did!
I’m hoping Gaga and Tony win just because I want Gaga to win at least one main category. I think Olivia is definitely going to walk away with at least one of the main categories I just hope no one sweeps, to me it always feel like over kill and someone playing way to safe.
I think Olivia has BNA on lock, but I don’t see her sweeping the big 4. I can see Tony/Gaga getting AOTY simply because this is his last album. If not them, I’m ok with Jon or Doja Cat.
Two months later and… -Jon won AOTY (Wanted Doja & thought it would go to Tony/Gaga, but I’m good with him; as long as it didn’t go to Billie/Olivia/Taylor) -Doja won one award (Pop Duo/Group w/ SZA; as long as she got one I was happy) -Billie got SNUBBED (she has plenty already; she can afford getting snubbed) -Tony/Gaga only got one (shock to me; I thought they would sweep since this is his last album)
The Grammy's nominations for rock and metal were extremely out of touch and the worst of the award shows I've seen this year. Like imagine nominating Paul McCartney and AC/DC in 2022
Yeah, it's radiating white dad rocker "modern music is bad" energy We literally have more interesting new rock acts out there that deserves better nods
@@goodjobeli Yhhhh wolf Alice and Sam Fender are two possibilities. Especially Wolf Alice, love them, Blue weekend in my opinion was the best album of 2021 and glad they one best group at the BRITS over coldplay and Little Mix
@@agonzalez7095 seventeen going under was released a week after the cut off date unfortunately, still a chance he could be nominated next year but im not getting my hopes up
I literally don't care about most things at the Grammys, they lost my faith and trust in them ages ago, but I care about exactly one thing. Silk Sonic needs to win literally anything. Like, either of the awards mentioned in this video that they're nominated for. I'd accept them winning best collared shirts if it means they get something. The 70s disco/funk revival can't stop here, please, we need the dopamine so badly--
@nature1966 No, It has to be through the age because Billie won 2 years ago, not this year. So we have to look at the age she was when she won. Olivia on the other hand could have won this year, so we look at the age she is this year. So Billie was 18 two years ago when she won and Olivia is 19 right now. If Olivia had won, Billie would have still held the record of youngest ever as she was 18 when she won (Olivia would have been second youngest, 19).
My deep, heartfelt love of award ceremony chaos is absolutely overjoyed at the Academy going with the Chaos pick for Album of the Year. On the other hand, absolutely *WILD* that Olivia Rodrigo didn't walk away with that award.
I don't know why people are shocked Jon Baptiste won AOTY. If you've watched the Grammys enough times, then you'll know the Grammys _does this_ . Arcade Fire Herbie Hancock (both Amy Winehouse and Kanye West's albums were nominees) Beck (it won over Beyonce's self-titled album) Lauryn Hill (it won over Madonna's "Ray of Light") Adele (it won over Beyonce's "Lemonade") They tend to pick the "wild cards".
@@ar-yj8lb true. But Madonna's "Ray of Light" was heavily praised within that entire year as well. It was considered a contender for the AOTY grammy, back in 1998. It was nominated for 6, eventually won 4. So people assumed it was going to win the AOTY.
Arcade Fire might have had the most acclaimed album of the eligibility period and The Suburbs was a #1 album in the UK and US so no big shock there either. Beck won with a vote split, since the four other albums were arguably "pop" albums and some considered Beck to be a veteran who was overdue. The bigger shock was Pharrell winning in the Urban Contemporary album category (as it was call back then) and beating Beyonce there. Herbie Hancock was one of several veteran winners in the 2000s, see also Santana and Steely Dan.
I honestly don't want Olivia to win. I may have really liked Sour, but to win something like album of the year? Sour? I'd rather the other noms for AOTY. No hate to Olivia tho, she's talented!
I feel like Baby Keem should definitely win Best New Artist. SOUR was decent (I gave it a 7/10) but most of what kept me listening was the fantastic production and engineering -- if that were the only way I'd judged the record it'd be a 9/10 -- and not the songwriting or consistent sound palettes. Baby Keem dropped The Melodic Blue and his voice is clear, both artistically and vocally. All the beats distinctly sound like they belong on the record, and his voice and flow are so distinct you can hear when other artists are taking a page out of his book. It's not likely that he will win, but I think he deserves it.
i also find it weird and awkward when white artists go on stage and say they wish they could give their award to a black artist or imply that they're less deserving of it. you went there because you were nominated, knowing you might win. if you really feel you don't deserve to be nominated in a particular category, say that and don't go. or boycott the grammys for their racist practices and don't submit your work in the first place. but if you're going to go up on stage, just say you're honoured to be nominated alongside the people in your category and leave lol.
I’m only gonna predict AOTY Who I want to win : Kanye West - Donda Lil Nas X - Montero Who I think will win: Billie Eilish - Happier than Ever Olivia Rodrigo - SOUR Taylor Swift - evermore? Lil Nas X - Montero? What will bring chaos: Kanye West - Donda
Rooting for Evermore, but I’d love to see Billie getting AOTY for the second time.. wild card would be Gaga which tbh I wouldn’t mind seeing that at all
i'm hoping either Taylor,Olivia, or Lil Nas X wins just because their albums were really definitive for the music of 2021. And I honestly had no idea HER released an album the past year before watching this video. If the Grammys are going for wins that'll make themselves look good to the general public, I wouldn't be surprised if Olivia sweeps up most if not all the Big 4 wins.
The Grammys are always on the weekend around my birthday so it's gonna be weird to watch it in April😂 I also liked the outside awards area & the couple of inside performances one after the other doubt we'll get it this year
Re: your comparison to the Oscar’s changing to ten best picture nominees, they actually did change the voting system along with that, to a system of preferential voting, which is too complicated to explain in a yt comment (look it up if your interested) but definitely did change the outcome of the voting process. I’m assuming the Grammys were just trying to add as many big names to their ballots as possible
Jubilee was my favorite album of last year so want Japanese breakfast to win everything they are nominated for. Evermore is an amazing album but I hate the way the colander they use the album is a year and a half old why is it nominated for last year just weird, but it’s my favorite of the albums. Also love Doja cats album and I like a lot of the Olivia tracks but I feel like more and better albums of hers will be made and I don’t want her to have that, “well she already has an album of the year should we really give her another”. As for the Grammys themselves the award show itself has little too no credibility in the modern music world the show is watched as a huge concert and with how big the music industry is I don’t think there’s a way to make a definitive music awards show that only nominates and awards the actual best artists, songs, and albums, because so many would be unheard of by most people. I mentioned before loving Japanese breakfast, she had a great book come out last year and so many people in the book world praised it and knew nothing of the band or her music before reading the book. Oh and I forgot to say it before I love album didn’t like this song or the album but please have them before some of the hits with the cast of mamma Mia
This year's Dance/Electronic nominees were absolutely awful. Last year saw nominations for cutting-edge works by Arca, Baauer, Madeon and wins for Kaytranada This year they chose to highlight Marshmello, Illenium and the deluxe version of a Major Lazer album that came out 2 years ago, all while also snubbing Porter Robinson & Floating Points in either category.
Dude, Nurture is my AOTY of 2021. Literally so good. Also I think Madeon deserved it just slightly more than Kaytranada but I'm not mad because he's cool too. The new illenium album is his worst by far
I’m a big fanatic of pop culture, and I usually tend to watch most of the “end of year award shows.” This year thought I might have to skip the Grammys, not only because there isn’t really any artist that I’m excited to watch, but also because the history of the Grammys constantly snubbing black artist 🫤
I personally want Olivia Rodrigo to win and I think she might sweep the awards and win big. Lil Nas X winning will be great to see as well because Lil Nas X is talented. Arooj Aftab winning would be amazing for me personally as a Pakistani.
i really want taylor to win something with evermore, but i feel like it won’t happen because the general pubic didn’t have the best reaction to evermore compared to folklore
From an unbiased perspective, Jon Batiste being nominated in the biggest categories was a little out of left field, but from a biased perspective I'm a huge fan of his and would be thrilled to BITS if he won AOTY. Not likely it'll happen but hey, I can dream. I have this feeling in my gut that they'll give it to Love For Sale since Tony Bennet is retiring, and that really gets my goat cause I thought one of the criteria for AOTY was that most of the songs had to be originals?? I probably missed a change somewhere, but I still hope it doesn't win. That would just be an embarrassingly safe option.
One thing that makes me mad about this is the complete absence of Maneskin in any categories. As far as mainstream music goes they have been a huge shake. I get the Grammy's are for the U.S. Americans but the ethnocentrism could be revisited sometimes
I’m hoping they continue to build momentum in North America. I wish their other work had caught on more. I enjoy Beggin’, but it’s definitely not their best.
I’ve actually listened to it every day since it dropped and I don’t generally even listen to pop or rap. (Prior to CMBYN, I barely knew who he was, and hadn’t even heard Old Town Road.)
Okay so now that the grammys are over, something that was kind of annoying is that even though I liked Planet Her I was very much rooting against it because I'm not comfortable with Dr. Luke winning. I'm kind of disappointed that Justice didn't sweep. Not because I liked it, but because Little Simz didn't get nominated, and I simply choose violence.
Coming here after the Grammys to say huh?! 🥴🤔 after seeing Jon perform and hearing his speech I really like him and will be listening to WE ARE. I think I’m disappointed that Billie and Lil Nas X went home completely empty. Especially after Billie’s great performance.
I love your videos like this where they ain't apart of a series and just explores a topic or question related to music Now don't get me wrong I love the monthly music and deep discog dive, but I wish we had more these videos
Well that was a weird result. Lot of upsets. Louis C.K. won for comedy while Bo Burnham wasn’t even nominated. The unofficial bridgerton musical won while the official soundtrack lost their category.
I mean, look, all of us want to see Hey What by Low win for Best Engineering, non-classical, I don't blame you for being super excited for that category
most of the time, non American artists need huge sales like Adele to get noticed by Grammy voters who mostly live in LA, New York or Nashville, maybe Atlanta and a few other places.
Lil Nas X is the only artist here I really like. On a personal taste level, I’d love to see him sweep every category he’s nominated in. On a more general level, I *hate* sweeps, so I hope he doesn’t. I love that, if he actually got AOTY, two other nominees (Doja and Kanye) would, too.
Evermore should win the AOTY, She deserves the award and you give awards not because of popularity, but because the album is superior and with quality.
Ugh. I hate sweeps. I don’t even like them when I like the artist/album/song. Olivia does nothing for me (I think I’m just too old for a teenage breakup album of that type).
watching this as the show is about to start... at least I know the Foos won all categories they were nommed for so I'm happy about that at least! (but taylor def deserves to win for evermore because I just think everyone needs to be reminded that it's just as good, if not ebtter at times, than folklore)
ABBA FINALLY DESERVE SONG IF THE YEAR AND IT IS MY PERSONAL FAVORITE ON THE LIST BUT DONT SHUT ME DOWN SHOULD BE THE SONG THE BEST CUT ON THE ALBUM AND WHY THE ALBUM VOYAGE IS NOT ALBUM OF THE YEAR NOMINEE IS BEYOND ME
8:56- that is literally everyone's excuse to evermore not winning even though it's the most deserving to! And it's not......FAIR And as much as I love Taylor, I wouldn't mind the AOTY going to Doja since she rlly deserves her due! Billie n Olivia can take the other ones I want doja to take home AOTY( if not evermore), BPVA, BPD/GP and BMRP
The fact that... you already know, like, not guess or predict but "know" who is going to walk home with a silly gold pokey thing is reason enough to NOT take any or most of awards ceremonies seriously. And then the nominations are so... safe and "err on the side caution/popularity/"money hats"/Top50/labels".
The fact that they announced Gaga as the last performer with her own announcement card and Tony's track record (also the apparent rumors the Grammy's want to give a goodbye tribute to Tony) I would say Gaga is winning Best Traditional pop as expected and will win the final award of the night, wether it is album or record but not both and Billie Eillish will win the other one and I doubt Olivia will win big because of her songwritting controversies so she's probably gonna have to settle with best new artist which is a shoe in and maybe some pop categories, and song will go to H.E.R. because the grammys adore her.
