To get the brake hose through if u dont have the little Rockshox tool that threads into both end of the brake hoses: Just take a thin long screw. Cut it and file it sharp at the flat/cut end, so that you have two sharp ends. Thread both hoses together and pull the hose through the frame. Easy! ;-)

Top tip for managing dust is secure the end of a vacuum cleaner just next to where you're cutting. It should suck up all the dust and particles produced before they get up in the air.

The reason for inverted forks is to reduce unsprung weight, but they are still quite rare on bicycles, I think only the Rock Shox RS-1 and Cannondale Lefty forks. Inverted forks are quite common on both sportbikes and motocross bikes, though nearly all motorcycle forks are coil sprung (there are a few air forks on dirt bikes).

Regarding stiction in the beginning of fork travel...it could also be a bit of grit that's worked it's way under the seals...after every ride I use Fenwicks suspension lube spray on the forks, shock and dropper...cycle them all through a few times and wipe away any grit and water it brings from under the seals. This keeps the initial movement nice and free right from the get go!

Ok, idk if anyone said this yet, but hotwire works very well for fabricating a hook, and for threading through the frame. Once threaded through, you can simply stick the end of the hose/housing onto the wire, and the wire will guide the hose or housing to where it needs to be.

Sometimes shocks are run "upside down" for clearance, depending on frame design or if it has a reservoir.

Great show guys! Thank you. #askgmbntech Requesting that HENRY AND DODDY do a recap of all the various rear suspension designs - their pros and cons, various brands' preferences, variants, and such... This would be very interesting. We hear about delta links / horst links and related concepts such as center of curvature, instant center etc. but these concepts are elusive to most. Just had my bike serviced for the first time. Came back looking clean and all, seems like they removed the rear cassette and cleaned it. Unfortunate the rear hub is now squeaking. Taking it off the bike, the end caps feel really tight, crunchy and you can hear the squeaking coming from them when spinning the wheel. Did they over tighten the cassette or is there something wrong with the bearings? Its a KTM lycan 274 lt and the hub is from DT Swiss with a thru axle. Love the videos btw :D #askgmbntech

Holds more damper oil, so its less affected by heat build up on long.runs where its being worked hard (e.g. alpine decent). As the oil heats, it effectively thins, reducing damping. This helps minimise this. Normal trail use tho, unlikely to need it.

@nexusparadigm4062
@nexusparadigm4062 4 года назад
Was in one of their videos. High compression - ability of stanchions/piston to "dive" fast, used for obstacles that repeat like rock-garden. Slow compression - opposite, obstacles far away: big hilly jumps, drops. High rebound - fast returning of pistons in many close obstacles - rock-gardens etc. Slow rebound - slow returning of pistons in far away obstacles - big hilly jumps/drops. If you ride roots/rocks choose: high/high. If you ride jumps/drops choose: slow/slow. For example, if you choose slow in rock garden roots it will not return fast enough before next. If you choose fast for jumps/drops it will return to fast and painful after obstacle.

#askgmbntech - Regarding the volume spacers question, when you say that you can have your travel be "a lot more supple in the beginning and midstroke", are you saying that volume spacers allow one to run a lower initial pressure? In other words, can volume spacers allow you to run a softer (lower-pressure) suspension setup without bottoming out, because the resistance ramps up at the end? Or is it still recommended to run the factory-recommended pressures in the shocks, regardless of the presence of volume spacers? Following on that, if it does mean you can run lower pressures, are there any rules of thumb for how much to reduce the shock pressures? Perhaps a percentage of the recommended setting?

If you are Happy with your "bottomingout" resistance as it is then yes. You can experiment with a lower presssure but be aware that your sag is still within the recomended values to maintain bump compliancy..
@piciu256
@piciu256 4 года назад
@@dennisrasmussen7813 better idea is to run same pressure less spacers, if you keep spacers and lessen pressure, you lose all the support. @@piciu256 Thanks for the link. I have some reading to do. FWIW I don't run any spacers (that I'm aware of... the FOX fork and shock are stock from Canyon), so I can't go with fewer spacers. I'm just pondering how I can make the suspension setup (particularly for the fork) feel more compliant for the early part of the stroke than it currently does without risking bottom out at the same time. Hence my question. Sounds a little like spacers may not be the answer, but I do also have some playing around to do with pressures and rebound settings - especially since I've lost maybe 10% of my body weight since I got the bike earlier this year.

#askgmbntech my fork has an air valve on top and bottom. I've heard this called a positive and negative air chamber. How does this work, should I fill them to the same pressure? Do all air forks have this? It's a rock shox u turn air. Oldie but rides great
@rupedog
@rupedog 4 года назад
Sounds like it might be dual air...most now are solo air. Yes, starting point is set the same, using sticker guide on fork leg (weight is ur weight in full gear, with water), and tweak for sag from there. The dual air then really allow fine tuning of the neg and so progression and small bump/initial sensitivity. its a great system, but its far far more fiddly to get right. Easiest to keep them equal, or neg 1-2%higher max to replicate (kind off) the effect of the new, bigger neg volumes in the latest forks

#AskGMBNTech I own a 2018 Trek Remedy 8. I've just ordered RockShox debonair spring and RC2 Lyrik upgrade kits for the standard front fork (160mm Rockshox Lyrik) I decided to go with a longer 170mm spring as I am way more into descending. How much will this extra 10mm affect the ride? And will these upgrades essentially convert my standard Rockshox Lyrik into a fully fledged Lyrik RC2? Keep up the good work and thanks in advance 🤘

I have lower back issues. I’m the market for a new bike - will a full suspension bike offer more comfort & support over a hardtail for gravel riding? If so what is too much travel for that type of surface #askgmbntech
@deymos2175
@deymos2175 4 года назад
Yes it will. If you only ride gravel go with short travel bikes (100-120mm, maybe even 80mm, but you won't find much there) Be careful to get the right geometry if you have back problems though!
@nexusparadigm4062
@nexusparadigm4062 4 года назад
Wrong chosen saddle and too low/far cockpit (handlebar/stem) can cause pain. The suspension cannot be TOO much. Because you can always soften/stiffen the suspension after buying with regulation knobs/air/spring.
@deymos2175
@deymos2175 4 года назад
@@nexusparadigm4062 well it can be too much. If he only rides gravel then an Enduro or DH bike would make absolutely no sense as it would just suck away energy and if he stiffens it up it won't use the whole travel therefore being less comfortable
@nexusparadigm4062

#AskGMBNTech Hey guys, i have a 2018 RockShox Revelation rc with 140mm of travel, my bike can support a 160mm fork and i like it more with a bigger fork. Can i put a 160mm air spring in it? Does the chassis and damper work for 160mm? Thanks for the answer.
@rupedog
@rupedog 4 года назад
I think 2018 revelation goes to 160, like the current one, but check sag marks on the leg...if there is a set for 160 (I.e. marks that show 25% at the level ur 120mm is zero), then YES. Get a upgraded (big neg) debonair spring in 160mm, noting.u will need to remove most if not all ur volume spacers (as newer springs are way more progressive due to larger neg) and redo sag set up. Easy job if u can do a lower leg service/have tools for that. Sram have a specific video and manual on their website for this job.
@IBCMTB
@IBCMTB 4 года назад
Yes, you can. Mine came at 120mm & have them at 150mm now (different frame). If not done already, you can also upgrade to the newer Debonair spring at the same time which improves the initial stroke feel quite a lot.

#Askgmbntech Does your chain wear if you leave it on the sprockets? I can imagine that there are some stresses on that chain especially if it's on the larger sprockets, although the bigger stress would be on the derailleur, or the clutch would be turned on (Shimano) I know it's just a bit but if you leave it for winter, wouldn't it be better to "drop" your chain on the Bottom bracket. The one by system works perfectly for that.
