Do You Have to Be an Priest to Do an Exorcism?

I've listened to enough of Jimmy to guess his answer on the priest exorcism question, "No, but it helps!" I commented this before I listened to his answer. Was I right?

Many People read the Scriptures as if it were a Kafkaesque delirium. Good Catholics pray their Scriptures to their children. ❤

Before even watching, I have heard only a bishop can sanction an exorcism, but can delegate the task to a priest. They usually ask experienced exorcists.

As a priest, I can shed some light on the question of laity performing Exorcisms. In an Exorcism, the priest is acting with the power and authority of the Church. As such, the Devil must submit to his commands, because the Church is empowered to act in His Name. Laity do not have this Office, so if they attempt an Exorcism, the. Devil May just mock their efforts, or ignore them altogether. But as members of the Church, they can supplicate God for deliverance with prayer and fasting, as the Scriptures say. As a comparison, the Priest offers the Holy Sacrifice by the authority of the Church in the Person of Christ. Does that mean that the laity cannot offer sacrifice to merit graces? Not at all! In the same way, although they cannot command the devil to depart, they can drive him away with the odor of sanctity, like Jimmy kinda aludes ta’. (BTW, Jimmy, the forced accent discredits the message, IMHO)

im confused. the idea of only priests performing exorcisms is more than some administrative policy. In a diocese, only a bishop is a defacto exorcist, but they can deputize priests as exorcists within their diocese. This doesn't square with this idea that "anyone who is holy" can do an exorcist.

Interesting considerations regarding VPN usage. Regarding exorcism in the form of deliverance prayers, by the laity specifically, I recall hearing one sermon advising the faithful to make it a habit to pray deliverance prayers daily. I didn't remember the exact quotes, but my takeaway was that it's simply a good practice to call upon the Lord for protection against the demons who prowl like lions looking for souls to devour. For example, one might daily call upon Jesus Christ to cover oneself and one's children, and one's property, with His Precious Blood. One might additionally petition the Lord to cause any demon who enters into a certain physical space (around oneself or loved ones) to be made blind, deaf, and mute in regards to anything pertaining to oneself or one's children. Demons can't literally be deaf, blind, or mute, but God can render them deaf and blind in the same way that you walk into a place and don't notice _everything_ about it. Some things just escape your attention. And God can render them mute in trying to communicate with other demons about you, so they can't organize spiritual attacks. I understand that this is an old deliverance prayer that was commonly prayed in certain cultures into the 20th Century, and even today in some places that haven't become as secularized as the US and Canada. There's actually a priest of Spanish descent -- I can't remember if he's Mexican or Spanish Filipino -- who's culture has some people, mostly women, who practice old pagan religions that are similar to voudun. They'll do rituals to call curses down on others. We might not think curses have any power, but the people of his culture believe they suffer increased spiritual attacks from being cursed. Even if they're not actually cursed, the people who curse them have given permission to the demons to participate in _their_ lives (the lives of the practitioners of pagan rituals), so when the Christians encounter such people, they in turn call upon Jesus to cover them with His Precious Blood and to make the demons blind, deaf, and mute in regards to their everyday lives. Even if it isn't needed to protect against being cursed, it doesn't hurt to beat up the demons by laying claim to one's rights over oneself and one's children and property. The demons hate us, and they're not going to start liking us if we just leave them alone, or worse, try to be friends with them.

Given the fact that Jesus is not one of the many sons of Zeus, the god of the Greeks, and that the God of Abraham had never promised a Son to Israel but the Messiah (HaMashiak) which the Greek forgers and fiddlers translated as “Christos” as it is written: "I will raise among them the Messiah(Christos)HaMashiak, a Prophet(Messenger) like you Moses, Him they must listen..." Deut.18:15-19; Acts 3:17-24; Acts 7:1-30; Luke 24:25-27 and 44-47; Acts 17:1-3; John 4:24-25, Surah 3:81, etc. So Messiah(Christ) is a Prophet in the likeness of Moses as Matthew proved it. Like Moses He stayed in Egypt. Like Moses He is Mediator of a New Covenant. Considering that the Gospel that Paul proclaimed to the world mentions JESUS CHRIST SON OF GOD and not just JESUS. Therefore, we can deduce that Trinity is a misunderstanding of the Pauline doxology of “Father, Son, and Holy Spirit”! Because between Jesus Christ (HaMashiak) Son of God and Jesus Son of God... there is a great philosophical and legal difference if we take for legal framework the TEN COMMANDMENTS and the social environment where Jesus was born!

It is definitely not moral to use VPNs to bypass geo-restrictions on content. It is licensed legal property owned by someone else that you are taking without their reasonable permission. They are in the legitimate business of making money and you are circumventing this by stealing their property and/or circumventing laws designed to protect it. Now, the question is though, in so doing, have you committed venial sin or mortal sin? There are three conditions for mortal sin. First, the act committed must be considered grave or serious matter (killing, rape, theft of something of great value, etc.) Second, the sinner must have full knowledge of the sinful character of the act. Third, the sinner must give full consent of the will, meaning that he has reflected on doing the action and deliberately wants to do it. Circumventing geo-restrictions does not directly cause significant harm to others, unlike more serious sins like murder or theft involving an appreciable amount of value. The harm is fairly indirect. While it violates the letter of licensing agreements, using a VPN to access content does not rise to the level of a "grave matter" that would constitute a mortal sin in Catholic teaching. Catholics are generally called to respect intellectual property rights and licensing terms, so using a VPN in this way would still be considered a venial sin - a lesser offense against God's moral law. The appropriate response would be contrition and a resolve to respect such restrictions in the future where possible. In this case, viewing a film without the proper licensing or jurisdiction could be classified as minor theft. Reception of the Holy Eucharist can absolve one of venial sin but not of mortal sin. For mortal sin, one must avail oneself of the sacrament of Reconciliation - Confession. In this case, true contrition and valid reception of the Eucharist is all that is required to absolve someone of this sin. Now for the "rest of the story". When one expresses genuine contrition, it must go along with a firm purpose of amendment not to sin again. Sin is a slippery slope. Once you start accommodating sin and making excuses for any kind of it, it is only a matter of time before you start expanding the borders of what you perceive to be venial sin and escalate the seriousness of your actions. This is exactly what Satan wants you to do. Don’t play fast and loose with the Truth (capital "T")! Stay away from the “ever near occasion of sin”! Stealing someone else’s property, even though it is not of significant value, is still sin. Stay away from it!
