Do You Really Have To Scarify Every Year?

Most lawns would benefit from scarifying every single year. There are always exceptions such as a Dwarf Rye grass that don't produce a lot of thatch, but in general, you won't do any harm by giving your lawn a run over once or twice a year with a scarifier.
Once your lawn is performing well, you may also want to add in a verticut a couple of times or so a year. Sometimes referred to as a groomer, this is a very light tickle through the thatch layer. It's useful for taking out very very fine small amounts of thatch so that your lawn can be kept in a peak condition.
So the answer is YES... you should scarify your lawn each and every single year !

Hi Shaun ! Nothing to do with the video but I wanted to thank you for all your advice. My lawn was in terrible conditions after scarifying in spring and because of the droughts here in Brittany. Mid September I spent 2 days working on it (removing bad weeds, scarifying, topdressing, overseeding and rolling). With the rain we have had here now it looks like the Stade the France so thank you very much. Looking forward to fertilizing it now to look even better 🎉

been bringing my lawn back from mostly weeds this summer and buying a cheap electric dethatcher has started to make a big difference. multiple passes over the entire lawn, repetitive over seeding, running the dethatcher over bare spots and spot seeding a few weeks later. along with lots of fiesta iron based weed killer. slowly winning the battle.

Hi.! For me mid october, safely for any seed work.. if just scraifying and aerating you can go a few weeks longer as long as its no getting too wet and boggy.. that said a customer of mine seeded in november and it all came through.. all depends on temperatures and sunlight :)

Is it ok to dethatch during summer? With such a short fully active growing season(s), hard to cram everything in then plus recovery. Also, during the growing season it usually looks great and don't want to mess it up then taking out moss and thatch.

Great video! I was so surprised seeing so much dead grass after scaryfing. I wanted to scarify in fall but I cant afford scaryfier. So will need to wait till next year. Last month I aerated it because I was reading that if there is a lot of mushrooms, then aeration should help. Instead I have more mushroom and its really annoying. Now I take them out before mowing the grass. What kind of autumn fertiliser do You recommend? And when is the time for the last cut before winter please?
@LawnRight
@LawnRight Год назад
Hi..I cut right through winter.. when its dry and its grown..probably 4 to 6 times over winter.. any autumn fert is fine as its higher in the p and k values than the n value (NPK).. ibe heard that sunjoe dethatchers are quite good

Great vid as always, as a novice gardener this information is really useful, thanks for sharing the knowledge ! I was hoping you may be able to advise, i have an overgrown lawn which hasnt really been cut in a little while, i believe it has weeds growing etc Would i be best to strim and mow it down, then deal with the weeding with some sort of product? Or strim/mow it down the scarify and overseed? How would i get the general lawn without weeds/moss etc? Any videos of overgrown lawn to perfect lawn?
@LawnRight
@LawnRight Год назад
Hi! Good question.. so I'm guessing it's hard to see what's happening because it's so long. Personally I would just give it a nice tight cut first and get it onto a regular mowing schedule then assess what needs to be done. It's going to take a fair few weeks for it to recover from the beating but it will happen. You may just find it's actually not that bad.... otherwise if you are keen to get to side asap you can simply do the above then scarify aerate overseed and topdress.. ie full renovation.. but that's costlier for the customer and may not need all.of that. So for now I'd probably do the right cut, give it 2 weeks to allow any weeds to grow back a little then apply something like weedol along with an autumn fertiliser.. this'll make the most sense then you can look at doing any other stuff in spring
@davidbutlin8271
@davidbutlin8271 Год назад
get some weed feed and mosskiller all in one bag make sure it has Iron in it (Fe) if u have a very bad moss problem thats what kills the moss

Can I ask what grass seed you use please?
@LawnRight
@LawnRight Год назад
Hi mostly a general mixed amenity seed for most lawns.. as it matches what most lawns have.. if a customer wants a shaded seed I'll choose that instead.. or finer lawn we can choose whatever the customer needs but I'd say 95% are general

Do I need to aerate and re-seed every time I scarify the grass? If I scarify, aerate and re-seed now in early October, would I need to do it again in early spring?
@LawnRight
@LawnRight Год назад
Hi no not at all. Everything you do is an extra layer, an extra thing you can do but dont always need to do..if its in good health then just a light scarify will be fine

@LawnRight
@LawnRight Год назад
Hi I know this looked long but it wasnt too bad. Cutting short is def needed when aerating, and its beneficial when scarifying not to have it too long but I think anywhere up to about 2 inches is fine as long as you are steady with your approach.
@evennes1
@evennes1 Год назад
@@LawnRight according to Stilh RL 540 instruction the lawn before scarifying should be cuted to 2-3 cm (1 inch). I agree with this also from my experience. 2 inches is in my opinion to long.
