Do You Want to Know How We Love to Neutralize the Advantage of the Return Team? | Pickleball Scoring
As the serving team, we want to get up to the kitchen (No Volley Zone) line. That is how we neutralize the advantage of the return team and hopefully score a point.
Most of us were taught to get up there at all costs. This approach, however, can result in exposing your team to unnecessary attacks. If you or your partner hit a high (or otherwise attackable) third shot, moving forward makes it easier for your opponent to hit a putaway shot. Moving forward before your partner also creates gaps in your line.
Bottom line: before you rush forward, wait, and see how your partner hits his/her shot. Then you can either move forward or stay back, in either case giving yourself the best chance to win the point.

Great point! As a new player I am being told to get to the NVZ ASAP so as soon as the ball is in the air I sprint to the line. NOT anymore! Thanks for the pointer.

Well done! I also was taught to sprint to the NVZ after return of serve. I have been pummeled by oncoming pickleballs

Great job, I see this “charging into the NVZ” mistake being made frequently, with good opponents they’ll make you pay the price. Staying in “sync” is the property approach to staying in control.

Great advice and insight. Shot breakdown vids are very helpful as well.

Where in Tampa do you play? I frequently visit the area and am looking for new places to play.

I want you to notice something. The biggest reason for not having one player up and one player back is that it creates a big hole between the players especially when returned to the side of the back player. Notice how they returned to the forward players side neutralizing the gap created by one being up and one back. Personally I rather be playing on defence one or two steps into the court on defence unless facing a overhand smash. The ability to take balls out of the air means that you no longer need the whole court in front of you. Being a bit forward allows one to be quicker to getting short soft shots should your opponent choose to use it. "ALWAYS BE CLOSING I was working with a tennis/pickleball coach today and talking to him about moving forward on every shot you hit. The tendency for many players is to stop and watch the ball or to jump into a big split step on the way to the net. When you simply move forward, at a controlled rate, you are enabling your body to cut off the ball while making a forward motion. We always want to keep closing on the ball.At the other end of the spectrum, I find students charging the net at full speed. This is not necessary. I always want to be closing but I also always need three things so the player remains stable and ready: Paddle in front Ball in front Court in front" From Sarah's blog.

@@BestPickleballCoach Static vs Dynamic stability. Now I am working more toward dynamic stability. This was brought to my attention by Sarah's blog. " Just as teaching related to paddle position has changed, so has the concept of a full stop vs. dynamic stability. I recently started learning more about platform tennis and its coaching principles. Why? Because a pickleball court is nearly the same size as a platform tennis court. What I learned is that a split step is not taught. Instead, the player is taught to decelerate and accelerate. Consider the concept of decelerating and accelerating the next time you practice. Maintain a dynamic position so they can step in any direction. This is the purpose of the split step."

I think that using footage is more effective than trying to demonstrate these positions and movements yourself.

While much of this is good, there is one thing often mentioned in NVZ approach that is a big myth IMO. It's to always try to be equal to your partner. Especially if there is a skill difference, the weaker player needs to be more aggressive with court positioning. The closer to the net you are, the easier the shot becomes. Playing from mid court shouldn't necessarily be avoided. The weaker player has to be more aggressive to apply pressure and funnel balls away from them. Waiting back on a good ball from your partner who may be hitting from behind the baseline is a bad idea. Always take court on a quality shot. Doing so applies pressure and can open poach lanes if your partner is stuck back for a shot. The weaker you are in the 4-some, the more aggressive you have to be with positioning. At the same time, your shot selection should be more conservative as you're the keep it in player in that situation. The best player can vary their pace, approach and shot selection to create confusion and uncertainty to dictate play. The weaker player cannot. The weaker you are in relation to the others on court, the more aggressive your positioning should be.

@@BestPickleballCoach Yes, the shot must be good to move up but the idea is to move up - ideally ball side - and give the opponent a decision in certain situations. Do they hit to the weaker player at the line or the stronger player slightly out of position given this scenario. It's a way to funnel balls and a bit of control to a strong player. A bit of a baiting that can at least get away from isolation play. It can also get the weaker player in a better position to succeed and play freely. Basically, if a discrepancy in skill exists, if the team gets caught back together, weaker player gets targeted and point over most likely. If in that situation the weaker player gets to the line, the point is pretty neutral. It's a specific thing but for matches where skill isn't the same in partners, it is present. One other thing is if you have one player at kitchen and other back a bit, if the player at kitchen is ball side - straight on ball - it is generally pretty neutral at worst and there are options to be aggressive and create problems

Sometimes when a team is hitting every ball to my wife I know I can get a head start moving forward if I choose. People get obsessed with hitting the ball to the player they perceive as weaker vs attacking me for being out of position. I get away with it more than I should.
