Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus, the story of a magician who sold his soul for ultimate power, is one of the most influential plays from the Renaissance. Faustus is a sorcerer in search of secret knowledge. He has an aspiration to conquer the world and master life and death. However, once Faustus sells his soul to the devil and contracts the demon Mephistopheles to serve him, he doesn't accomplish very much. In fact, he wastes the rest of his life and fails to repent.
Marlowe's Faustus is an exploration of temptation, ambition, and the nature of self-deception. The questions it poses and the themes it explores are as relevant now as they were hundreds of years ago.
