I think the problem is that there is a medical term (which is very accurate) and then there is a general word used by public (not trained professionals). And there is where the differences can be seen and where it causes problems. Because "abortion" for dr. Jones is a medical term. While for the broad public is a word that means "killing babies". And while neither here are right or wrong, you just have to make sure when speaking with other person what meaning they have in mind. Like one would say that baby is only when it is born, the other would argue (like the man in beginning) that "baby" is a baby since the moment ova and sperm meet and then there a medical definition of a baby which is important to medical professionals. Hence for that man in the video any contraception is a form of abortion. And while he is technically correct (if you have in mind that he does not use medical terms here) he is absolutely wrong if you think that he uses medical terms. I'm really surprised that people here are fighting about terms. Leave medical terms for professionals, because they need to be precise. Regular people can use whatever language they want. Terminology is not an issue. OPINIONS are. Especially when someone says that you should have a baby when you do not want to.

Ugh, that is so gross. Here's what keeps coming into my head--- organs/ blood/ tissues can only be donated with consent. This sends me a very clear message: I have more bodily autonomy as a corpse than I do as a living woman.

Honestly, theoretical future boyfriend should be thanking you. If he “absolutely yes” wants kids, you two are incompatible for long term dating. You can break up sooner and cleaner, or even screen each other out of your dating pools altogether. No harm no foul. If he’s a fence sitter or lean yes, seriously dating you is a route to no kids. If he doesn’t like that, he can leave. No amount of negotiation or “trying to change her” is gonna untie those tubes. Saves both of you the trouble. And if he’s lean no or absolute no, there is zero ambiguity on future children so auto-check that box for compatibility. He doesn’t have to go through the ordeal of a partner that definitely wants children.

That tampon = sexually active story reminds me of my mother's reaction to my dermatologist wanting to put me on birth control at 16 for my skin. My mother was very "involved" and came to all appointments, and she said I can't take it because my father doesn't agree with it at my age. I guess there's an assumption that being on birth control means you are just going to sleep around. She said I mustn't even mention the recommendation for BC to him. He insisted that I get my acne fixed at my age, and I ended up going on Accutane for two years with no change. My mother did almost have a heart attack when the dermatologist asked if I was sexually active and explained the risks. When I turned 18 and got my own BC prescription my skin cleared up in 2 weeks.

Medievalist here! Medieval reproductive medicine was generally derived from classical (ancient Greek) reproductive medicine, which did in fact include the idea that woman had to orgasm in order for a fetus to be created. More specifically, the female reproductive system was essentially believed to be the inverse of the male reproductive system; both had to "ejaculate" / eject "semen" for reproduction to occur. (Though there was continual debate on whether the uterus / ovaries actually contributed during initial formation of the fetus. Some believed that their main function was nutrition of the growing fetus.) Classical medicine was strangely right in odd ways and wildly wrong in many other ways. If anyone's interested in learning more about this, I recommend looking up Soranus and Galen - they were two of the biggest sources of anatomical and physiological knowledge in the West before the early modern (Renaissance) period.

And IIRC this „knowledge“ about how you need to have an orgasm in order to get pregnant was not really all that empowering for women. It more worked in ways like - well, she got pregnant, therefore she had an orgasm, therefore she enjoyed the whole thing and therefore it could not have been rape.

I had a hysterectomy after my last baby (my doctor treated horribly, wouldn't do it without my husband's permission, would not medicate me for pain after surgery, and kept me on the floor with new moms so I got to hear the jinglr go off every time there was a new baby). I have been so stressed about Roe v. Wade. I have daughters. I don't want them to go through what I did. From the accusations of being pregnant when I wasn't sexually active (I had ovarian cysts that put me in the hospital multiple times) from having my first OB with my first baby tell me she was just small (and not about the one umbilical artery, brain cyst or IUGR. That baby was born at 29 weeks and she lived six days). I was flat out told that having another baby was more important than my life after almost bleeding to death with my second. I'm firmly pro-choice, and thankfully living in a country where I can have an abortion, if necessary. I don't think anyone decides to have an abortion for trivial reasons - being forced to birth a baby can be a tragedy for someone without the necessary support, and a pregnancy can be life threatening for the mother in many more ways than just through complications during pregnancy. The way to prevent abortions is not to ban them, but to add sex education to school curriculums from an earlier age, to make contraception readily available and affordable, to create an environment where a kid can have a safe adult to talk to about possible abuse, and improve social support so no-one has to resort to sex work or abusive relationships to get food on their plate. Seeing old, wealthy white men talk about when life begins should really start learning about why sometimes abortion is the life-saving route, and why trlling women to keep their legs crossed is not a viable option.

In a mom group I am in, there was one mom who was 17 weeks pregnant... she found out gender and asked the group if she could get an abortion because she didn't want to have a boy/girl (i forget what it was ... because it shouldn't matter, you should love the baby regardless) and if she was being too dramatic. And OMG, the comments did NOT disappoint, absolutely EVERYONE thought she was being dramatic and was being absolutely heartless. Gender disappointment is very real and not even a horrible thing in itself, but I don't think prior to that post that I had ever heard someone even THINKING of terminating a pregnancy just because of what was between the fetus' legs. I myself was shocked when I found out I was having a girl, not disappointed just shocked/surprised, because I had such a strong gut feeling I was going to have a boy. Here abortion is available up until 19 weeks, but I do not think any sane person would seek out an abortion by CHOICE, or just because the weren't getting the gender they wanted, that far along without some serious medical concern. Within just a couple hours the OP deleted her anonymous, I really hope having all those mom's come at her woke her up to how crazy she was sounding/being.

It's still not anywhere near as common as it should be to find a doctor that will respect the autonomy of the patient. If they happen to be AFAB. Can't imagine how it is being trans. She made it as easy as possible too, handled all the Medicaid issues for me, asked me some basic questions and (as she had already seen me before and knew my history) showed me the paperwork to sign. We had to wait 30 days from that signature, she didn't make another freakin' appointment, she just scheduled the procedure for the first day she had in OR after that before I left the office, told me to call if I had questions or needed clarification, and 34 days after the paperwork I was spooking the anesthesia techs with how much medicine they had to give me to knock me out. 😊 But that's every surgery I have.

Hi, professional historian here. That first fact is a bit misleading, the belief was that a woman would not get pregnant if she did not want sex. That didn’t mean men actually went out of their way to make a woman orgasm and women would lie and say they did because if they didn’t they would be diagnosed with hysteria. Also, this belief had the added consequence of if a woman was raped and she got pregnant, then she must not have been raped because the resulting pregnancy was “evidence” that she wanted it.

I met a woman in her 50s who told me how she was raped at 18 by a man twice her age, who was also her boss, but she didn't believe she was raped, because she got pregnant, therefore she must have liked it. He also prevented her from getting an abortion (at the time, it was illegal, and he threatened to turn her in to the police). She was forced to marry him (cause how could you dare dishonour your family?) and what followed were 20 years of domestic violence (and probably subsequent marital rapes, cause that's the 'normal' dynamics between spouses). He yelled (yes, literally yelled) that every time he tied a woman's tubes who was my age and didn't have kids, she ended up changing her mind and wanting him to undo it later, so he wasn't doing it anymore. End of discussion, he wouldn't even listen. Fast forward to me now in my 50s, still happily childless (yay for surprise early menopause, I guess). Also, a friend of mine had a baby six years ago. @@Black-Swan-007 Hi, thank you! You know, I hear that a lot - 'they shouldn't be painful'. Doctors claim they are painless and that there should only be some mild discomfort. But anecdotally, I know a lot of people who have at least some, if not a lot of pain during the procedure. I don't know why the pain occurs, but maybe everyone in medicine should take it seriously and we can move past that antiquated procedure. We have so much innovation in every branch of medicine, but we still use speculums invented in 1825. Not that it's bad that it was invented that long ago, but we surely can do better, as demonstrated by Australia.

When Covid hit, a lot of women were expressing their fears about giving birth and parenting during a pandemic, particularly being concerned about giving birth without a partner (as some hospitals were doing). That subreddit was infiltrated with r/childfree users harassing all these moms and telling them that "it was your choice to get pregnant, suck it up and do it alone". It was awful. I said, "Watch me." Six months later, I was confirmed to be sterilized. I wanted to get an endometrial ablation done too, but I stopped having periods for about two years, so I thought I was done. I was about my mom's age when she hit menopause. That poor woman had terrible periods; she had endo. When I was born through C-section (I was breech and facing the wrong way) the surgeon exclaimed, "How did you get pregnant?!?" She told him, "It wasn't through immaculate f**"ing conception!"

Yeah, it's pretty morally bankrupt. I'm thinking that disrupting the mating dynamic in this way may change the face of society in a few decades at an innate level. If the strategy to winning offspring in the game of life is as simple as a little patience and brute force - well there you go! Human males will no longer need to cultivate more evolved human characteristics in order to win babies that they probably won't or can't provide for. Will a society subject to the new permissive rule become more violent and less intelligent? I strongly suspect the answer is, 'yes'. This is not to say that instances of R@%e do not result in offspring but there have historically always been mitigation tactics in place to prevent or neutralize offspring. To retard the implementation of what should be considered for humans natural selection given the cognitive aptitude of the species will have long-term effects that most would consider deleterious. Now we could disincentivize female se%uality in the society in question but if you think about it that's like treating a bleeding bullet wound with a bandaid. Women because of the sacrifice and limitations are supposed to be the ones who determine who gets to have babies.
