My husband who is 45 had such little knowledge on the inner workings of the reproductive system I was shocked. He has learned A LOT since we've been married and frankly he knows more than many women at this point realistically haha. Shoot my daughter who's 9 doesn't know about sex but she knows about the uterus, periods, and has an incredibly vast knowledge on anatomy and things like why periods happen and what's actually happening. When she was even more little she loved her belly button because that's what attached herself to the placenta and it made her feel special because that's what physically shows our connection from when she was inside my uterus haha. To be fair on the tampon one, some women do use light or regular tampons because the larger ones are uncomfortable. Well done for educating yourself. If you haven't already and if your daughter hasn't had her first period yet, I'd recommend having some menstrual products in the house ready so she's got them when she needs them. There's loads of products available now (disposable or reusable), so you could talk to your daughter about what she'd prefer to use and the pros & cons of each (including how often and how to change them). It's probably also worth making sure she knows what to expect before it starts. For example, it's not uncommon to have "practice periods" first where you just have some brown discharge rather than proper bleeding.

My husband of almost 20 years, together over 22, who has witnessed the birth of our 2 kids, miscarriage of 1, actively participated in our elevated efforts to conceive (which took many years) and is actually pretty intelligent and I would argue, a feminist, got almost ALL of the answers wrong. Particularly the tampon size = vaginal size question. After we've discussed why I was trying to switch to Light ones (and ultimately period undies) due to perimenopause in my 40s. Though, it would honestly not shock me if a lot of women got a lot of those questions wrong too...

i agree. most of it is not the person's fault. I was raised as a woman but the amount of things that were taboo to to ask about my own body was astonishing, let alone me asking any questions about a male body. the education system didn't help at all. it was only through growing up and finding gems like Dr. Jones and many many others i learned to not be ashamed of my own body. Almost all of the stupid misconceptions about sex and tampons etc are still a common belief among my family's women, the men are not even thinking about these things enough for them to do a google search because as kids it is instilled in out minds that these things should not be asked

The fact that these people can't answer these questions is kind of terrifying. Tbh, though, if I was asked similar questions about the male reproductive system, I might have similarly obtuse answers. When I took sex ed as a freshman in high school, I was too embarrassed/grossed out to really pay attention when we were learning about the male reproductive system, even though my health teacher was actually very thorough from what I remember (I know she was pretty thorough about everything else she taught). I had this idea that as a girl, I didn't need to know about it; I don't know - I also got all weird about learning about anatomy and dissections in biology. My point is that these men might have felt similarly grossed out or embarrassed in health class even if they had adequate sex ed and decided not to pay attention, like I did.

Honestly I feel like a lot of people blame men for this situation when it's really the fault of the education system, and yes, the reverse situation is definitely true (the number of women and even men who think that vasectomies are casual reversible birth control methods is insane. No! Reversal is far from a guaranteed success so a vasectomy should not be had if the man knows he wants biological children in the future, and it's a serious surgery!). I've known plenty of women who don't know their own bodies either, and honestly a few of these questions were a little bit obscure (I have a uterus and know what an IUD looks like and does, but I wouldn't remember what the letters stand for)

As far as I remember (from my four rounds of sex ed starting in kindergarten and ending a few years before I left school, so about 25-30 years ago) the male reproductive anatomy is not quite as complex, because they „just“ need to produce one thing and „shoot it“. 😉

I personally felt like learning that stuff was something I should have been able to consent or not consent to, but no one asked me. I tuned it all out, and learned what I do know on my own time later when I felt more comfortable doing so. I really didn't want to be in that class, and my class was even rather undetailed. It was a very uncomfortable experience, and one I never want again. I dunno. I feel like everyone simplifies the topic of sex education as if it is straight forward when there is a lot more nuance than people think. When in a school setting, you are going to have kids that are SA survivors, kids of varying sexualities, kids of different religions, etc. I know putting these kids of different backgrounds and identities in a class with a whole bunch of other kids while learning a sensitive topic is the best we've got right now, but it isn't without fault either. Oh bless him. As a man I get it though. I work in healthcare (nursing assistant, I've not started medical school yet) and we had a patient with an injury down their that I was helping prep for surgery. Long story short I ended up in the drug room with one of the RNs giving me a very thorough anatomy lesson whilst the rest of the team was looking through the window in the door wetting themselves with laughter because I wrongly assumed there was only one hole at the front and one at the back. In my defence I've never needed to get up close and personal with a woman down there after I was born as an bat for the other team 😂 But, even if I were straight I probably wouldn't know as I don't recall that being taught to us in sex ed - maybe teachers assume we know, like it's obvious? Clearly, it's not 😂

Did some videography in college and had attempted a few "asking random people questions" videos. The end result is always wayyyy different than the actual process. There are also processes to help the interviewed give bad answers. One process we would call "trip up questions" and it involves asking softball questions about a neutral topic and then tossing in the question you really want to ask. It sort of shocks the person and causes a kind of brainfart and makes them give comically weird answers. Longwinded way to say that videos in these interview formats are heavily edited. Yet, the answers these bros gave are ranging from hilarious to creepy.

I dont doubt this is pretty edited and even manipulated to some degree, but personally knowing a lot of men and having had so many discussions on the topic with men on the internet, most have this level of knowledge or less. A small but still concerning number of them, also refuse to take correction because they think they know better already. As in, they think they know better than women and also refuse to even google the answer or accept they were wrong when you bring them proof.

To be fair, I would have completely missed the one about how many tampons a person uses in one cycle, because I’ve never been an exclusive tampon user and also I forget how many hours are in a day.

When Sally Ride , the first female astronaut, was getting ready to go up in the space shuttle, NASA asked her how many tampons she might need if she started her period while in space, they were going to send her a couple hundred. To be fair, NASA tends to overestimate how much supplies they need and send backups. But 200 tampons for 1 woman for a mission that was less than a week. Ridiculous

I was kind of stuck on how many days should I be using as the average and how often do most people change them (I have a pretty heavy cycle for the first couple of days and even supers soak through pretty fast and usually my cycle is on the longer side of normal; also I haven't used them in a long time, as I was using a cup for a few years and now I've been using birth control to stop my cycle for a couple of years). I assume she didn't include the people who said, IDK 15-25 or so, maybe even a wider range. But 1 is a ridiculous answer.

They didn't show the men who got the answers right and they didn't even ask women at all. This video was trying to present men as a whole as not knowing about female reproduction which is sexist. I doubt they'd be willing to put out a video showing only women getting answers about either gender wrong, but you easily could have made a video like that if you asked enough women and filtered out the ones who didn't fit your agenda.

And this is why we need not only comprehensive sex ed in schools, but that there should be no separating the boys from the girls so that both sides can understand what goes on with the other because the vast majority of men and women are going to pair up with someone of the opposite sex, and it'd be much safer for everybody involved if both parties understand how their partner's body works.

I wish I could find this lack of knowledge funny, but it just comes off as existentially terrifying. Edit: I went to my husband and asked him as many of these questions as I could remember off the top of my head, and he got all of them right with the exception of the number of tampons used in a typical cycle. To his credit, he ballparked seven to ten saying, "that number is definitely too low but I'm not sure exactly how many", which is definitely a sight better than ONE.
