One thing about Joel's endurance climbing the stairs, and getting snuck up on: in addition to the fights, he also hadn't had any sleep the night before, due to standing guard.

Very true! That does certainly all take a toll!

the thing about joel still being a dad at heart: after each episode of the show released, they also released a podcast episode on spotify, hosted by troy baker (joel's original video game VA), during which several members of the cast and crew would discuss each episode. they mentioned a few things about joel's character that i think the show portrayed excellently - one of which is that he definitely still has paternal instincts that he tries and fails to ignore. if you rewatch earlier episodes, you'll notice him subconsciously leaning towards ellie when she's upset like he wants to comfort her, or stepping between her and a gun without any hesitation. they also talked about balancing his tough masculine exterior with this "scared child" look in his eyes, particularly when he's reminded of traumatic events. joel has been one of my favourite characters since i was a kid (i was a little younger than ellie when i first played the game) and he means the world to me, i love how this show has interpreted his character. also, must admit - i'm 20 and have a connective tissue disorder that really messes with my joints. joel is SUCH a mood lmao. i've had friends who were older than me and joked about me being an old man in a teenager's body back in highschool. though obviously for different reasons, it makes me happy when apocalyptic shows like this acknowledge how hard these situations would be on people's bodies - no way would i be able to run around and do parkour like people in these kinds of shows do, lmao.

It's not just Ellie's age, but also her being somewhat ignorant about the outside world, since she grew up within the QZ. For post apocalyptic standards she was kinda sheltered. What happened with Brian was that he was begging for his life after Ellie shot him in the lower back, paralyzing him. Oh and Kathleen's sidekick, Perry, is by the way the OG game actor for Tommy.

Definitely! Yes, with Brian, the first time I watched it through, that was my genuine reaction, like “wtf is happening right now?” But when I watched it through again while editing, it was definitely clear that it was sad desperation, that came off almost comedic to me because it was just so sad and desperate 😔 maybe that’s just a defense mechanism for me 🥺 enough hard stuff I’ve seen in my life that I have to find the funny and light hearted in anything I can, and especially difficult situations…

Just discovered your channel-I love watching therapists' reactions to this show (which holds such a special place in my heart, and as someone who goes to therapy as well). It's not only a great video-game adaptation, but a great show by itself. Major props to Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal: they have such great on-screen chemistry, and their off-screen friendship is incredibly sweet as well. It's also seeing two "Game of Thrones" alumni working together again! I hope you enjoy the show as much as I have. Side note: Pedro may not be a dad himself, but he plays them VERY well. Also I'd love to point out-I love how in small moments, you can see that not only was Joel a father before, but he was a father to a teenage girl. I think becoming close to Ellie is even scarier for him, because I think they are both such mirrors of each other: Ellie is even more like Joel than Sarah was. The message of healing through trauma, grief, familial love and found family will never get old. Sorry for the long post-I just love this show and these characters so much! 🥰

Thank you for the comment! I am totally enjoying this show!!! ❤️ I completely agree. It’s pretty clear how scary the relationship with Ellie is for him, and seeing him slowly warm up has been beautiful. I still have a few eps to watch, and am really interested to see how their relationship develops from here!!

About humor, someone told me this analogy about processing trauma that it's like eating a loaf of bread, talking with someone understanding about it acts as water to make the bread go down easier and humor acts as a mechanism to break the bread down into smaller more manageable pieces, so you're not trying to gulp down an entire loaf in one go.
@JessTheMD

I love that analogy! It totally tracks ❤️😍 thanks for sharing!!

12:10 I remember watching a Dr. K video here on RU-vid, and he called this "coming up for air". Sometimes people arent comfortable, so they come out of their shell to talk about something difficult, and coming up for air is a little pause they need before they can continue.

Fun fact: Note how visible the watch from Sarah is when Joel finally laughd at one of the puns. The pun book is from someone Ellie loved SPOILER given soon before they died.

I do have a disagreement about Ellie is not a young child she's 14, physically mature and has lived in a post apocalyptic world her whole life in a military school. The tampons in the last episode were a huge inclusion actually noting that biological fact that usually is completely ignored in television. (Note it will come up again). Ellie's experience of violence would have been much more extensive than current day USA as indicated by her comment about it "not being my first time" when talking about shooting people. Joel is 56 and with damaged hearing as they discussed which is a survival issue for them. He can't physically do what he did in his 30s. He acknowledges this when he gives her back the gun and starts to teach her - however his self esteem has been badly damaged by first being unable to protect Tess and now being unable to deal with Brian without Ellie's help. He's just really realizing this for the first time and it must be an incredible blow to his sense of self where he has always depended on his physical abilities first as a construction worker and later in smuggling etc. The show runners did discuss the decision to not have Ellie's shooting Brian be a clean kill. They wanted it to have psychological consequences for both her and Joel not just video game type action. The actor who plays Ellie also mentioned something I missed that she felt that she failed. She should have been able to finish the killing herself. Very different psychology going on than in our world today.
@JessTheMD
@JessTheMD Год назад
Thank you so much for the insight! I didn’t quite think of it like that, regarding Ellie’s actual age and her maturity because she’s had to *toughen up* so quickly. I appreciate the different lens you’ve given me to watch this through ❤️ thank you!

Rewatching these. Funny thing, while I've seen complete playthroughs of the game, I have yet to play it or watch the series. Love Kathleen, great character, and very hated amongst fans. She found herself in charge in a shit situation in a shit world, and is just doing the best she can to keep her people alive and together. While i don't agree with her decisions, I do admire her for stepping up to lead what was left of her people.
@JessTheMD
@JessTheMD Год назад
Agreed. She's been through so much! When I did my re-watch of the whole 1st season, I also saw a person who has been dealing with a lot of grief/pain and trying her best to do right by her people... Kind of no matter the cost... Which is what I think made her such a hated character. That scene with her in her old bedroom... you could just feel the child in her that was scared and you can see the adult version of her just trying to heal...

Have you ever seen Mr. Bean? He is a character who was big in the 90s played by Rowan Atkinson. There are some medical scenes involving the character I was wondering if you would have any want of reacting to.

@@JessTheMD Not medical advice, just career advice. You know I have been taking classes to try and become a nurse. I just have concerns about the job. My main career right now is journalism. I have known I wanted to be a journalist since high school, I did internships, free lance, jobs during college, I knew what the job was. Now I don't know how to do any of that. I can take all the classes I want but I hate to spend these thousands of dollars in classes just to find out I hate the job. I chose this path because I was just wanting to find something stable with a good future. I have never been able to shadow anybody, get any sort of experience as to what the job is like. I know that's what classes are for but I'd hate to go through all of that only to find out later I hate it.

"What's happening?" Crocodile tears after trying to kill someone. ps. That said, still not an excuse to kill someone but mores in a post-apocalyptic world will do that.
@JessTheMD
@JessTheMD Год назад
Yes agreed! My first time watching, I was like “this is supposed to be some sort of comedic something (not sure what), right? Like what??” But then once I was editing, it was definitely a lot more of “oh this guy is scared shitless and begging for his life, and it comes out sadly comedic because he’s just so desperate….” This whole apocalyptic situation is just tragic start to finish 😔
