As you've heard, the Daleks are old foes of the Doctor, going all the way back to the second story ever, in 1963. They are not just famous to Dr Who fans, though, but icons of British culture. Absolutely everybody in Britain knew what daleks were, even when the show had been off the air for decades. So to bring them back for the revival like this was a classic moment, but to do so in a way that is equally gripping to people who have no idea what a dalek is makes this a truly great episode.

This episode is an important milestone. The first episode that really makes you see what Doctor Who is all about. It's very easy to give up on Doctor Who based on the first 5 episodes, especially the fart monsters. This episode reveals far more layers to the Doctor which were missing, alluding to certain history making you want more and the jiggle physics were on point too 😁 Looking forward to many more reactions, there isn't any other show which has destroyed me emotionally as much as Doctor Who has.

A very iconic doctor who villain! This episode is beautiful and is easily one of the best in series 1. Eccleston's acting is incredible in this episode

It’s a miracle this story was even made. Russell T.Davies wasn’t even sure that they could even get the Daleks to appear in the New Series since the BBC don’t own the rights to them. Even today, the Daleks are still partly owned by the estate of Terry Nation, the original creator of the Daleks back in 1963 and Nation, and to an extent the estate, tended to dislike any Dalek story that wasn’t written by him, despite the fact that Nation was kind of a one track writer when it came to both his Dalek stories and other works outside of ‘Doctor Who’.

Daleks, enemy of the Doctor since 1963. A big nod to classic Who and as you noticed, Daleks are not robots but actually (creepy looking) lifeforms and for sure totally the opposite of R2D2. A+ for foreshadowing.

Daleks go back to the first season in 1963. They were the first iconic monster in Doctor Who, but it wasnt until the 80's that they learned how to handle stairs. The Daleks were modeled on Nazi soldiers.

The Daleks were created by a writer Terry Nation for the BBC in 1963, he based their character upon the Nazi's of the second world war, good reaction very intuitive.

Great reaction! Your energy in this one was so much fun to watch. This episode is one I find myself going back to repeatedly when I rewatch the season. Eccleston's acting was on point. This episode was fun because there are two Classic Who villains in it. One is only referenced quickly as the old enemy who is now an exhibit. The secon is the Daleks. They have been a villain since the first season of Dr. Who. They were modeled after the Nazis. One thing I noticed in my first viewing was the implication in the dialogue of this episode that the Doctor not only killed the Dalek race but also his own. It floored me at the time. Didn't match who he was from my understanding of him thus far. Also, on this viewing I noticed another subtle moment of dialogue. The Doctor chafed at the insinuation that they were the same in anyway, but it was like that moment freed him a bit too. Because he said, "I'm not like you.... wait, okay. Maybe we are the same...I know what you deserve...exterminate!" Then tried to kill the Doctor. It made me wonder if he believes that's what he deserves as well 🤔.

Daleks during the time war would booby trap parts of their casings such as their weapons as well as having a deadman’s switch where even if the dalek is destroyed or damaged, even after a battle a dalek has the capacity to basically self destruct, as a way of ensuring that their enemies don’t get parts or access to any dalek weapons or technology as well as kill anyone foolish enough to try and scavenge after the battle, as a side note there are heavier daleks known as special weapons dalek where their entire mid section is basically a massive cannon, and can be used either as a heavy fire support platform or as a ship grade turret where they’ll sit on the outside of the ship during combat and basically become turrets, they also make use of patrol crafts where earlier models were designed for a single dalek designed for dealing with long range engagements where mobility is required where there might be harsh or difficult terrain or environments as well as extending the range of a daleks power supply, dalek patrol ships are massive dalek fighters which houses three daleks in a hexagonal housing shaped like a dalek with three shield generators along with a three dalek guns and a massive cannon on the top and are used either as a fighter or as a ground attack aircraft and can be seen in the day of the doctor, other rare daleks include The dalek degradations Degradations are a catch all term for any or all dalek deviants or mutants who are dalek in origin but lack the typical dalek design and tend to be more Independent or different than your typical dalek, one variant is a walker dalek which has a dalek head but has a squat almost flat like body with the typical dalek loadout, but instead of their usual skirts, they’re replaced with three massive legs. So to summarize the time war it wasn’t just a single war on all fronts but a war in multiple time lines where for example they might go to a planet two hundred years In it’s past, let’s take the goa’uld as an example and before they ever become a space faring race, a dalek would travel too their work hundreds of years ago in which a seedling would be planted called a genesis ark in which is stored pure dalek DNA, or just dalek DNA designed by daleks from an entirely different universe In which a thousand years might have passed by but in our universe only a month would have passed and so within our universes year could be a million years in the other universe in which by that time they would have hatched and started conquering planets in that universe and so on and so on and like a cancer it begins to replicate and expand, all the while the time lords are trying to stem the expansion of the daleks

We can be flippant about the Cyber head but it's worth thinking about the context - There'd been no Doctor Who on television for 15 years. We like to think of history as something that happened to someone else. We don't expect to see part of our own lives being displayed as the past. On the low resolution televisions, Children were afraid of that head when it was moving, speaking & shooting. Some saw it pop out from the sewer that is described on the plaque.

Daleks are engineered lifeforms. There's an entire backstory all the way back to the first Doctor, detailing a lot of the history between the Doctor, & the Daleks & their creator. The only piece missing is the Time War, which is eventually addressed. In a sense, a Dalek is born programmed with certain needs & instincts. You saw that in this episode.

I'm sure others have mentioned this but the old joke about Daleks was that you were perfectly safe if you went upstairs. The reboot looked at that and said 'Nah'. The Doctor's first and most deadly enemy. Now, I don't know if something is wrong, but I have really enjoyed your attitude towards this show and was really looking forward to the onward journey. Any news? This is going to be a big year for Doctor Who - not that you'd get there yet, so many episodes, but it will be all over the place.

The Daleks were the first villians the doctor faced way back in 1963/64. The first episode of doctor who was November 23rd 1963- the same day JFK was assassinated and they had to replay the first episode again before airing the second. The daleks were really popular in the 60s, there was a dalekmania like beatlemania, and two movies were made as a reinterpretation the first two dalek stories- the daleks and the dalek invasion of earth.

A Dalek hovered in Revelation of the Daleks and properly levetated in Remembrance of the Daleks. Before that they were never seen hovering or flying but it was somewhat implied that they could.
@binrotheheretic8174

But ... as a commenter i recently read pointed out - despite the long running joke - the Daleks first elevated in a 1965 episode - just it happened off camera ... And just to clarify that was a classic Cyberman head in the case at the start - about which we wont say anything more for the moment.. :-)
