‘How long can I keep doing this Clara? Burning the old me to make a new one.” He’s not just talking about the situation he’s in right now, he’s talking about regenerating too. Clever writing.

This is the episode where Peter Capaldi really shines as the 12th Doctor and one of his very best episodes but one you have to watch more than once to completely get what's going on.

Doctor Who changed my life, but this episode defined it. I'm suffering from depression for 30 years now, and this is exactly how it feels. Punching through a diamond wall, hunted by your nightmares, haunted by pictures of those you lost without being able to talk to them, repetitive misery every day and starting over again and again, basically killing your former self to reinvent yourself constantly. But my silver lining is the whole Brother's Grimm story about the bird and the shepherd's boy, which is printed on a poster in my bedroom. I might be a bear on the outside, but the little bird is my patronus. Oh, and I loved that you enjoyed the soundtrack, since imo this is the best score Murray Gold has written for the series.

This is grief, as well. The only advice possible: live. Exercise like a maniac, see something new each day and make THAT your repetetive behaviour, avoid repetetive behaviour, unless you are actually learning something that is.

Yeah, I'm exactly the same. And this episode came out around the same time my sister died and i was very sick in ICU on top of that so after I got to the ward I watched doctor who cuz I usually watch doctor who when im suffering physically and mentally to take my mind of things and the latest episode was incidentally this episode and it broke me down all over again. Hope u feel better . Keep at it little bird =)

For me, it's the line about the day of their death not being hard, but all the days they stay dead that gets me. 30 year anniversary of someone's death this week, so I think maybe that's why I am crying again. I thought this visualization, of the entire episode, of grief was brilliant.

@ItsMeHarry

Yeah that was Galifrey at the end, you were right. I swear only Peter could carry this whole episode on his own and make it so emotional, yet so victorious. This episode feels like a brilliant exploration of grief and makes me so emotional to watch it. The veil, the creature thing, feels like a manifestation of grief, and the Doctor never being able to escape it but having to just overcome it and break out of that cycle of grief really connects with me. I'm so glad this episode reminded you of your Auntie, because as much as it was clear it hurt, it is also clear she means so much to you and being able to be reminded of those we've lost is how we keep them alive. I'd definitely recommend watching this again if you ever feel emotional, I've done so and it really hits. This episode is one of my strongest reasons Peter Capaldi is my favourite Doctor. I hope you recovered and wish you luck for the next episode (and honestly probably the one after that as well lmao)

Just this week i received a notification on Tweeter about an article that called this episode "The show that changed Sci-Ci forever". The article cites a few phrases like "I just watched my friend die painfully. My day is already very bad, let's see what I can do about yours", the loop that instead of the situations in other Sci-Fi is not a time loop, he doesn't go back to the past, just relives his experience but time keeps moving forward, as well as the emotional music of Murray Gold as some of the things that make this episode great. I don't know if it changed Sci-Fi, but I liked the article. On a side note, I think no one makes threats like The Doctor. Whether it is "Good men don't need rules, today is not a good day to find out why I have so many", or the line in this episode that ends "let's see what I can do about yours", I'd be dead scared if The Doctor threatened me.

This episode is rightfully held up as a masterpiece of writing and acting, which it is. But I'd like to give a shout out to the masterful editing. It's not easy to clearly explain what's going on here, but that montage of the Doctor slowly punching through the wall communicates perfectly and understandably this complex cyclic event passing over thousands of years. As an editor myself, I can tell you that this is not an easy thing to do.

One of the all time brilliant episodes of all of who and its even more impressive when you realise the entire episode is just the Doctor by himself, the only other entity really is the hooded figure but they don't really do anything, the entire episode is held together and elevated by Capaldi and his fantastic performance. He's truly one of the best actors to ever play the Doctor. As for the last episode I remembered who Rigsby was. However I love the episode Flatline and think its one of the best episodes in season 8
