Doctor Who: Davros - Destiny of the Daleks new vocal

That "small improvement" does wonders for this clip, now he actually *sounds* like Davros. Now this sounds like the man who created the Daleks, inspiring fear for millions of years through his omnicidal creations.

Tom Baker's Doctor is EPIC! This shows that even in the later years of his Doctor if you gave Tom some good dialogue and a good scene he could still out act and perform anybody else in this role. I need to go buy the DVD of this show. Great touch up on the audio.

I like what you've done with this. You not only added to Davros' voice, you also appear to have done some color correction and added some sound effects and music. Very nice.

Oh this is bloody brilliant. Such an improvement on the original vocal. Love the nod to the first Dalek story with the incredibly atmospheric music.

This is excellent work. It makes David Gooderson's performance so much stronger as Davros. It also reminded me of Gooderson's odd mispronunciation of the word "weaponry" as "weaponary". I wonder how that got through when the scene was being filmed...

Fact: the BBC was on a low budget when this was filmed the mask was to small for davros and the daleks where in disrepair

To "Lycan Police23"....Tom Baker was the best Doctor the show ever had in my opinion. I'm saying this only after watching a bunch of episodes of each Doctor. Tom was brilliant in so many ways as well as being charismatic and sexy. His performance just convinced me he could be a Time Lord from Galifrey. Anybody else agree?

Surprised the BBC don't re-release 'Destiny of the Daleks' as a 2 disc set , Disc One of the original broadcast, Disc 2 with the Davros voice redone, as in this clip. They released 'Day of the Daleks' as a special, with new improved effects and new Dalek voices, (as the Daleks' voices on the original broadcast of 'Day', fans didn't think much of), i'm sure David Gooderson could come in and re-record his dialogue, funny thing is when he is whizzing down the corridor, with 4 Daleks trailing behind him, and he is saying "come there is much to be done, you must tell me of all the victories the Daleks have won, whilst I have slept......", the voice sounds more like it should, (with that rasping Dalek tone to it). That's the only time it sounds the way it should, anyone else notice that? I wonder why they got the voice sounding right in only one scene??.

Fantastic improvement over the cheap 1970s sound track..That was so awesome, imagine the entire episode re-edited !!! 4th Doctor amazes me how he can switch from comedy to anger and back again.

Yes I think think this does improve the performance a little bit. Though its a shame we lost Michael Wisher at that time.

It's from the score to "The Daleks" (the first ever Dalek story). I don't know the name of that particular track, but it was composed (and realised) by Tristram Cary.

Absolutely brilliant - I've always thought this performance was treated unfairly by fans - a 90% improvement at least.

Yes, like your go as well! Seems such a simple idea, I'm surprised nobody has done it before. Unless they have. The music makes all the difference, I think, and shows what they could have done if they had bothered and had the cash back then.

Thank-you for rescuing David Gooderson! His performance was terrific - but mired by poor vocal effects, and a latex mask that did not fit - thus meaning his real mouth was never visible (unlike Michael Wisher or Terry Malloy). This is a much more worthy effort than Nicholas Briggs writing off the Dalek voices with his own in Day of the Daleks - and I love Nicholas Briggs to bits, but the original actors did not deserve to be dumped that way.

How did you manage to avoid changing the Doctor's vocal too? Cuz there are some brief moments where they kind of talk over each other. Like 1:33 for example.

I think when the blu ray of season 17 is eventually released I think this story should get improved by new effects and etc

Very good! I wonder why the original Doctor WHo series is never broadcast on the BBC channels anymore? It's like they're trying to pretend it never happened. I would've thought that now the new revival has come along this would be the perfect time to show some re-runs!!

nice improvements. also love the bit where the doctor says that arcturis won the galactic olympics, even though the aliens of arcturis are disembodied heads in life support machines like in the curse of peladon. urgh that was a bit nerdy

The new vocal effect is great, but it doesn't change the mahogany writing. If there was any story from the Classic Era I'd want completely redone, it's this one.

@solidbronze The problem was that Michael Wisher pulled out at the last minute (due to other commitments) thus leaving the BBC with no choice but to get someone around the same size and shape of Michael Wisher, as they couldn't refit the chair and the mask around a new user in such a short space of time. So David Gooderson came in and took over and any problems with Davros in Destiny can be put down to the fact that the BBC didn't have enough time to fully refit the chair and mask.

This or early next year on the Season 17 Blu-Ray set the voice will be similar to this in the 5.1 mix

Not an easy job considering the overlapping dialogue. Very impressive. A little gating may be required as the ring modulator crackles in the silence, but still very good!

It's the same voice. He just added a stronger ring modulation effect.

@OlagGan He didn't - Wisher was touring Australia and was never able to do the episode. He did pull out of the original version of Resurrection ('The Warhead' / 'The Return' when it was held up a year by the union strike though, I believe.

I liked it. You fixed lame Davros. I also noticed how the florescent orange on his face really popped. It was a sign of the times. He sounds much more Dalek like. They forgot to put the filter on his voice back in the 70's.

I loved this episode, if not for two reasons; 1) It lacked that dark, terrifying air that Genesis had, and 2) I really just could not take the Movellans seriously, as hard as I tried -.-

I thought he was great, though criminally underused in the episodes. The bit where he saw Sarah Jane was lovely though.

That is the best Davros voice I have ever heard. And also whats the music? Its really quite intimdating.

Nice job, especially the color. (Picky, picky, but I thought he said "Consumed in a fire of 'awe'"...) EDIT: I didn't realize that I'd already commented on this (8 years ago) and seeing it again, the change really does give "Davros'" voice a more similar quality to original portrayer Micheal Wisher. With Gooderson sounding more like "Davros" his characterization feels more like "Davros".

That was really good. And even in that small clip it's so obvious that, as good as David Tennant was as the Doctor, he pales in comparison to the mighty Tom Baker.

The main issue was less the voice and more the fact that he was wearing the same mask made for Michael Wisher

But that made his voice more alien and (thus) iconic. And that ring modulation in all later Davros stories is probably added in order to emulate that fault with the mic.

i met david gooderson recently and told him that in my opinion he was my fav davros, simply because he captured the scientist perfectly, look past the dodgy mask and you see the quintisential davros a man driven by science not good not bad just unfeeling unless its his work, the true dalek creator

Excellent work.... but it's not just the vocal effect. It's still a fairly one-note performance, and the faxct that Michael Wisher's mask doesn't fit him doesn't help either.

this is the strongest most brilliant character in all of fiction. so incredibly brilliant. every show should be like this. every book should be like this. if they aren't they're rubbish.

Hey man great job on the video editing , it's a really cool revised edition, i like it :) Tom Baker was a good Doctor Who but i do actually prefer Chris Eccleston, and the other two (I know i forgot their names, but hey it is like fucking 5am here lol)

Destiny of the daleks is o underrated when actually it’s a very good clever story. Ok the props are battered but actually I’d say it’s good they are, makes them look tired, battle scared, digging scared ect. Dw rod whilst weak it’s still a good portray better than terry maloy

Is the music from the original or has it been added? Either way I like it a lot. Adds great dramatic tension to the scene.

Genesis Davros is the king of scary.

I will never understand why people seem to think increased contrast does anything to make the same footage look any better.

Good as the new vocal is, there was nothing wrong with Goodersen's performance in the first place. The mask wasn't made for him, the budget was non-existent, Wisher was busy. Destiny isn't an acknowledged turkey because of Goodersen, is what I mean.

You've done a good job with his voice, but I personally think that this is just a good scene with Gooderson. For instance, just remember: "You-will-release-me. You-will-return-me-to-the-Daleks." I thought that was awfull.

Michael wishers voice wasn't modulated in Genesis in the first place, the microphone that was used to pick up the the voice was a bit faulty.

I always liked that episode, much better than the Davros on new Who Great quote: Untill the universal supremacy of the Daleks is assured, I can't not assume the luxury of death.

People complain that David Gooderson is the only bad Davros and he did a bad job but I would argue he’s the only good thing in this story besides Baker and Ward they should have kept the voice he had

Now I want to see the whole episode again. Or all the Tom Baker ones. Tom's the best! IMHO
