So I was under the impression that this was also a two-parter, so there's that commentary...and then my patrons pointed out that this was a standalone ep, so I did a second commentary. LOL! Apparently I found this episode confusing. Anyway...hope you enjoy. ;-) XOXO FWR

I guess you could say this is just Rasmussen’s attack. Maybe the Doctor never figured out what was wrong then traveled on his way. Or maybe he did but the clean up wasn’t interesting enough to make a full episode about. IRL, I think I’ve heard they were planning a two parter but didn’t really have enough story so they shortened it to one episode with the ambiguous ending. I guess it will spread throughout that star system like a Ringu monster plague. But I guess eventually word will get around not to watch the video. It’s a bit worse than getting Rickrolled.

Mark Gatiss said that some of the most interesting stories are the ones where the Doctor loses. And I think that partly explains why the ending feels unresolved. If I remember correctly, too, he had mentioned that initially this was conceived as a two-parter, but when he was writing it, he had to make it fit into one episode. That also may explain why it feels a little rushed or unfinished. I was lucky enough to attend a BBC America preview of this episode before it originally aired, and Gatiss was there to talk and give a Q & A. I had fun, and do still enjoy this episode of Doctor Who, though I realize it's not everybody's favorite.

I think the implication is that the whole thing was fabricated and didn't really, in universe, happen to Clara etc.

The Sandmen are another one of those great unresolved mysteries of Doctor Who, up there with the creature under the blanket in Listen. Perhaps in a future story some show-runner may decide to go back and pick it up. But, as this was not a fan favourite, I doubt it will be anytime soon. Though like you mentioned in your second recap, there were parts of this story that were interesting and enjoyable, it just needed some form of resolution.

Originally Mark Gatiss was going to write a follow-up to this episode for series 10 (or it might have been a prequel, I'm not entirely sure), but he ditched it after finding out it was going to be Steven Moffat's last series, and thus wrote a different story instead

I just wanted to pass on the sad news that Bernard Cribbins, aka Donna's grandpa Wilf, has passed away today aged 93. Every night, Bernard... when it gets dark, and the stars come out, I'll look up... on everyone's behalf. I'll look up at the sky... and think of you.

Shortly before the episode aired, a show called Inside No. 9 debuted on the BBC. It was written by Reece Sheersmith (Rasmussen in this) and Steve Pemberton (Strackman Lux in Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead). Both writers, plus Mark Gatiss - who wrote this episode - were members of The League of Gentlemen, a darkly-comic series that was very popular in the late '90s/early '00s. With that in mind, Sleep No More always felt like a No. 9 Episode written by Gatiss. It is much maligned by fandom as a whole, but I've always enjoyed it. Maybe it's just my macabrely absurd sense of humour.

I like your reactions :-) I've been watching Doctor Who since the late 1970s and I think its the best show ever made. Nice to see people discover and appreciate it for the first time.

The rest of the story is simply that Rasmussen's video will always be out there in various archives. Occasionally somebody will stumble across this intriguing film and share it around, there'll be an outbreak of Sandmen that's eventually put down either through force or because the planet was quarantined and the infection allowed to eradicate the population. They eventually become a perennial problem, like Cybermen. Perhaps one day somebody figures out the connection and all copies of the film are tracked down and destroyed (this kind of thing can evidently be done in the DW universe - the Doctor was able to remove all traces of himself from the record that one time). Ultimately the Sandmen demonstrably never manage to completely wipe out humanity since we've seen humans at the end of the universe, preparing to depart for Utopia. The Doctor will have cured Clara of the infection using something aboard the TARDIS. He regularly does such things - sometimes we see it in episode, sometimes we're left to assume that it happened.

My ultimate measure of whether I like or dislike a Doctor Who episode is whether or not I would watch it again. I must have really hated this episode because I have never rewatched. Most other episodes I’ve rewatched at least once, but not this one.

Ah, Mark Gatiss, what did you do here? This ep just never came together for me. Interesting but it never pulled me in at all. Still, Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman is in it, so I can just watch those two and be entertained.

This episode reminds me a lot of Dead Air. It's a Doctor Who audiobook that is absolutely fantastic and one of my favs. This episode was entertaining but it there's something about it that just doesn't hit right.

This is the only one parter in this season. My only complaint with this episode was it didn't have the Doctor Who intro.

I know patreon isnt for everyone but hers isnt quite reasonable compared to others ive seen. She started a new job recently so currently not doing new reactions but she had finished agents of shield and doctor who up to this point so its all available there to watch though you either need a watch along copy or just watch the pip which has a filter applied to not violate copy right laws

It was supposed to be a two-parter, and the 2nd part is in the next season. But we have never seen the 2nd part. So yes, this episode doesn't really work as a standalone episode and is considered as a filler with non-existing story in this Universe. But I really don't get all the hate this episode gets.

The "lost" second part of this would have involved monsters made of bellybutton lint.

I don't think Moffat really knew where to put this story. It could have been placed anywhere in Series 9 and it would make as much or as little sense. If the story was a one-off in a programme like Black Mirror or Inside No 9 it would probably work better because the unresolved elements, including what happens next to Clara, wouldn't really matter. There are some brilliant ideas and some great performances and filming in the story but it inevitably disrupts the series arc and we justifiably expect it to have consequences for the main characters when it doesn't.

This is a parody of some weird movie that was a big hit that I can't remember the name of. The whole thing was filmed with hand held cameras and assembled from "found footage".

This episode should had be titled "Sleep No Bore" Not considered one of the best episodes of Doctor Who I found it very boring and the ending was just plain weird i didn't understand the plot at all I think Mark Gatiss was on acid when he wrote this. I think this episode is rated in the lows of "Love & Monsters" "Fear Her" "All of Series 6" and "In The Forest of the Night". The next episode is a goody.
