I also have to applaud each and every member of the cast in this episode. They all gave amazing, top notch performances. It takes a lot of talent to carry an episode like this. The episode is carried entirely by the strength of the dialogue and tremendous acting. There are no special effects or very many action sequences to fall back on. David Tennant is particularly brilliant here, my second favourite performance from him in the role. My #1 is coming up fairly soon. Lesley Sharp (Midnight entity) is the true star of this episode though. She has almost no dialogue of her own. She's just repeating what the others say. She has to convey everything the Midnight entity is feeling and thinking solely through her body language and facial expressions. An unforgettable performance, one that surely ranks as one of the best ever given in the shows history. This episode is so dark and cynical. The complete opposite of most other Doctor Who episodes. What it has to say about humans is quite harrowing, this episode really isn't fun viewing. However, I think it's brilliant BECAUSE of that fact. It's not a requirement for every episode to be fun. I'd rather have an episode sacrifice that to tell a really well written story, the way I think this episode does. I think it's better to have an episode like this, rather than one that's entertaining on the surface level, but doesn't have much of real substance to offer. It was incredibly brave of RTD to attempt an episode like this on a show like Doctor Who and I think he succeeded on every level. You certainly can't have an episode like this very often, but that makes me appreciate it even more. With all that being said though, it wasn't all doom and gloom. This episode had very negative things to say about humans overall, but there was still some optimism there in the end. Dee Dee and the hostess managed to work together and figure it out at the last minute. Showing some humans are able to regain their composure and think straight, when it really counts. I think it's interesting that they were the most isolated from the group. The Hostess was accused of being a failure at her job and Dee Dee was told that she was average at best by her professor. They were the one's that were the most chastised for their differing thoughts and opinions and pressured to fall in line. In the end it was them who put a stop to the madness. Overall this episode is a superb subversion of all the normal tropes and fundamentals of Doctor Who. Easily in my top five stories, I adore it.

For me this is the scariest/freakiest episode in all of Doctor Who. It didn't have some scary looking alien or monster, but it showed how scary people can be thanks to hysteria. They completely threw logic out the window and were willing to kill someone without a second thought. All the alien did was talk. That's it. Seeing the Doctor paralyzed with fear was absolutely terrifying because usually something bad happens and he'll either make a quick joke or he'll solve the problem, but he was helpless. Easily the scariest episode in my book. I both love it and hate it because of that.

This episode is a prime example of big ideas on a small budget. It's just one room they had to use when they didn't have a budget for a bigger episode but to make up for that, they created one of the single most mysterious and creepy monsters in the show's history. Which is in fact HEIGHTENED by the set, as the enclosed environment gives off the feelings of claustrophobia and isolation, which makes the fear increased as there is literally nowhere to escape to. They have to deal with the problem by getting to the core of themselves and, as it often is, the hearts of most men are not so formidable as we might like to believe.

This is one of those stories with the classic sci-fi trope "humans are the real monsters". It's a trope with a long history in Who (classic and modern) but this is a particularly strong example. It works so well because of how we get to see the characters all transform from comfortingly familiar stereotypes (pompous professor, emo teen, etc.) into killers. The mind-power the creature has gives an excuse for it happening fast enough to be plausible within a single episode, but it's quite clear that it's only working with what's already present in those people.

I've always loved the range of guest stars in this episode. Patrick Troughton's son, Merlin, Carol Jackson from EastEnders, Dave's wife from The Full Monty and Kyla from Holby City. It's random even for Doctor Who! In the behind the scenes of this episode, Lesley Sharp (Sky) said that this was one of the hardest things she's ever had to do in her acting career because she had to learn everyone else's lines as well as her own. And in the parts where she has to say things at the same time as the Doctor, she and David Tennant spent nearly every waking hour going over their bits again and again and again, particularly the pi one. Also, for audio purposes, in the part where they're trying to throw the Doctor out, the rest of the cast had to do their "Get him out", "throw him out", etc. shouts separately while the others mimed. They were then put together in the editing process to sound as if it was all filmed as one. And whenever David wasn't in shot in that bit, they pulled a pillow along so that they wouldn't injure themselves.

The worst part is undoubtedly, when it possessed the Doctor. The sight of the Doctor sitting there unable to move, paralysed with sheer terror written all over his face might very well be one of the scariest moments in Doctor Who history. He's completely powerless, without the ability to move and more importantly, speak. The Doctor's greatest weapon was stolen, his voice was taken from him. Normally he talks his way out situations or if that doesn't work, he runs! No such luck here, he was at the mercy of the Midnight entity. The entity took advantage of his curiosity and his respect for all forms of life. It used that as a way in. It took the noble sacrifice of the hostess to save him from certain death. You can see how much it shakes the Doctor to his core that he has absolutely no idea what it was exactly that was so intent on getting him killed and had also managed to shake his belief in humans so severely because of how easily it was able to manipulate them. It's a really poignant moment, when the Doctor asked everyone what the hostess' name was and no one had an answer. No one bothered to ask her that because they were all too concerned about themselves. Why should they have asked? It was her job to take care of everything, she was the hostess after all...... smh. It really says something that the closest the Doctor has ever come to dying is at the hands of a bunch of humans..... Another great thing about this episode is the Doctor's desperate attempts to get all the humans to see sense and how that almost gets him killed. It's been well established that humans are the Doctor's favourite species. No matter all the great evils the Doctor faces like the Daleks, he always believes in humans and our capacity to do good. He always has that to fall back on, it's what keeps him fighting. Now he's been shown the worst of humans, now we're not as brilliant as he'd like to think. His belief in humans has been shattered because when we're pushed hard enough, we can turn into monsters too. This episode is also a brilliant reminder of why the Doctor needs someone by his side. It works so much better because the Doctor's without a companion. It wouldn't be quite the same if Donna were present. Normally the Doctor has back up, someone to give him credibility and act as a mediator. As we saw in this episode, why should anyone trust the Doctor? He just turns up out of the blue, assumes control and claims he can help because he's "very clever". The problem is that he has no real qualifications or credentials, even if he calls himself the Doctor. That's the other thing, he doesn't even tell anyone his real name! It also shows how arrogant the Doctor is to just presume that he's the smartest person in the room and the only one that can help. It generally always works, but it's that attitude that almost gets him killed in this episode. This episode really shows the other perspective and how the Doctor's confidence can easily be mistaken for superiority.

Fun Fact: The older actor playing Professor Hobbes is David Troughton, who is the son of Patrick Troughton who played the Second Doctor in Classic Who from 1966-1969. However, David has been in "Doctor Who" stories before. His legs had a non-credited cameo in his dad's story "The Enemy of the World", and he also played a young American Civil War soldier in his dad's final story "The War Games" when he was 19. He also had a major role as the young king of a planet in the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) story "Curse of Peladon". Oh, and he's also the uncle of Harry Melling (who played Dudley Dursley in the "Harry Potter" films),; and his son Sam Troughton had a major role in HBO's "Chernobyl" as one of the nuclear plant engineers in the first episode.

I think if Donna had been on the Crusader, then she would of initially freaked out a little, but not as much as the others. She would of trusted the Doctor and not let anyone throw Sky out. And then, when Sky started talking ahead of him, Donna would of panicked quite a bit. The moment anyone even suggested throwing the Doctor out though, she would of started swinging. I think one of the most interesting things about this episode is the characters of Jethro and DeeDee. Both of them face constant criticism from the major authority figures in their lives, and react to it in completely different ways. Jethro slowly has his independence and free thought crushed by his parents, through means of harsh criticism and fear, until at the end, even though he clearly doesn't think it is the right thing to do, and is struggling with it, he bends to his parents will, and helps to throw the doctor out. Deedee on the other hand starts of thinking very limitedly, but over the course of the episode, changes and becomes more independent from Professor Hobbes. However, even with her newfound independence, she doesn't have the strength to oppose him in throwing out the Doctor, so just stands and reacts. I feel like Jethro and Deedee were both trying to be decent people, and were placed in an awful situation, who chose to comply with the authorities rather than make a stand. “Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing.” - John Stewart Mill

It also shows how horrible humans can become when they are oppressed for some time - it "teaches" them to go along since resistance is both exhausting as well as useless. Parents and "teachers" like this are the ones who at least facilitate, if not outright lay the necessary foundation for developments like the rise of N*ziism, North Korea, McCarthyism, .... Sure, obedient little puppets of one's own will are so much easier than more independent people, so the motivation to create them will probably always be there. But it's far too easily exploitable, on so many levels, that we should teach people at every opportunity how despicable it actually is.

There's also some good time travel elements and because it's not massively integral to series 9's arc then it doesn't need any prior context.

Katrina: Not only do I love this episode, I think it's one of my favorites of all time. It's surprisingly and refreshingly so uncharacteristic a Who story, not only because it's so illustrative of how rapidly a small group of humans can deteriorate from to the verge of murdering someone they were forming an initial camaraderie with, but because the Doctor is so knowledgeable an individual, both for being a Time Lord and even by comparison to possibly all of his people, yet here he is, not only without a clue but his ability to take charge and sway most people to follow him repeatedly fails and almost catrastrophically (to him). He survives due to the sacrifice of the hostess, who was herself willing to go ahead with throwing him out. And, as Paula said, the performances and scenes are just so great. Especially Leslie Sharp as Sky. But all the other actors were also great, even the characters we dislike, because they get us to dislike the characters they play, from the professor to the dad and especially the mom.

The Doctor is this seemingly all-powerful, always-confident character who can get out of anything, but the thing that nearly does him in is not a scary alien or a Dalek or whatever, it's pure humanity at its worst. It's so scary that all that this midnight entity does is take the Doctors charisma away and suddenly he's powerless.

One of the things I love about this episode is The Doctor uses all his usual tricks to take control of the situation and here non of them work.

You can say it is a bottle episode, but it has more of an intimate play/chamber play.

I don’t know how, but this is like the spookiest episode. Maybe because it’s creepy but never explained and the only thing it’s really about is the darkness in people, even good people, when they are scared

This episode is STRESSFUL. I rarely use block capitals, but Midnight deserves them! One of Tennant's best performances as the Doctor, and a brilliant concept. It's worthy of all the praise it's getting in the comments - but for me next week's is even better!

Spoiler free for Paula 3´ Best scenes are "Forest of the Dead" ending, when The Doctor confronts the Vashda Nerada with his legacy, and 42, when he was possesed with those eyes and had a speech about humans with Captain Mc Donald, "Eleventh Hour" ending speech on top of the roof of the hospital, "Time of the A....s" part 1 ending, when he was talkin to the villains via walkie talkies and shot a gun for a great cliffhanger, or season 6 final episode the ending, the conclusion of the whole season and the conversation with that "HEAD" in case of the oldest question (goosebumps), EVERY scene with PETER CAPALDI for sure (HE IS The Doctor, case closed) and lots more .. but i guess thtas enough for now ... in case of "Midnight" i'd say the scene when they are about to throw out The Doctor, how he looks into the camera, tears in his eyes, a despairing sad and scared face,, THE HUMANS HE ALWAYS SAVED ARE ABOUT TO KILL HIM OUT OF "FEAR" - HORRIBLE !!

This is an exceptional episode. The most claustrophobic, tense and creepy episode of modern who. This episode is also a terrific exploration of the worst of human nature. These people were driven to those extreme conclusions because they were scared for their lives and hadn't got a clue of what was going on. Mob mentality and cabin fever made them paranoid to the point that they were almost driven to kill someone in cold blood! Does that make them horrible people? No, of course not. As we saw from the conversations they were having with the Doctor at the start, these people were perfectly normal, nice people. They only started to freak out once the Midnight entity attacked. Which shows how any human (especially when they're surrounded by other people) could turn into a monster, when faced with the fear of the unknown and faced with a life or death situation. It exposed humans at their weakest and most fallible. What makes this episode so creepy is how realistic the reactions of those people are. I think any of us would react in the same sort of way. There's a little bit of all those passengers in all of us. Our natural instinct is to protect ourselves, at any cost! I also love how the people started to get more scared, when the creature was SPECIFICALLY repeating THEM. So true to real life, unless it's affecting you, you're not too bothered. I guess RTD is suggesting that when the chips are down, all humans are selfish and self centered. Quite a cynical viewpoint that's not 100% correct, but not entirely untrue either. The Midnight entity is one of the greatest monster/villain (what would you call it, lol?) in Doctor Who history, that's amazing considering the fact that we never see what it is. It's never clear what it wants either, we just know that it's incredibly clever by how it's learning things about all the passengers and then using that knowledge to turn everyone against each other. Then, eventually turning everyone specifically against the Doctor because it figures out that getting rid of him is the key to getting what it wants. Whatever that is. It's so bold of RTD to reveal next to nothing about this creature. We've been conditioned to get the answers to all our questions by the end of the episode. However, this episode works better because the main threat is shrouded in so much mystery. It's also done in quite a clever way so the episode isn't unsatisfying. I also love the way it constantly and relentlessly repeats every single word that's said by anybody. RTD takes a page out of Moffat's book and makes the mundane very unsettling. How many of us have had an annoying sibling start repeating our every word? The way it's done here is so effective though. The way it never, ever falters. Always repeating every single word PERFECTLY. Clearly in an attempt to test how far it could push the humans psychologically, but also to learn more about humans along the way and absorb our speech patterns to become more like us. Then, it moved on to the next stage of the process, speaking simultaneously with everyone, which uped the WTF factor even more. Finally, it started to speak their words before they even said them. How could it possibly know what they were about to say?! Just brilliant!

One of the BEST episodes of New Who and it lets David Tennant shine. I missed Donna though (she's my favorite companion in all of New Who, then Amy, then Clara) but it doesn't detract from the quality of this episode. It's easily in my Top 5 New Who episodes of all time. Love this show, love you ladies, and always look forward to each week's episode. Off to watch your Star Trek: TNG watch and react now. Allons-y!

This is not a fav of mine - it's VERY well-written, but Doctor Who is one of the few sci-fi shows that champions humanity, and this one just completely turned that on its head. But I love seeing Colin Morgan as Jethro in his pre-Merlin days. "We've broken down! In the middle of nowhere!" (And there are, in fact, a few fanfics out there that have made Jethro a reincarnation of Merlin)

Honestly the most HORRIFYING thing about this episode when I first watched it .... I don’t remember the Hostess’s name. That question is such a poignant line and it terrifies me to think that I could so easily be one of these people no matter how I THINK i might act It gives me chills Human nature can be beautiful, but it can also be terrible

I always supposed that due to the psychic nature of whatever made the planet like that, (hence the heavy shielding round the pool, the jumble of visual and audio effects in the bus etc.) when the Doctor closed it all down, peoples' minds were then free from distraction. All it took then was the guy in the Cab to see a flash out of the corner of his eye for the thought he had to fly round everyone else's mind. Therefore, everything that happened was a manifestation of imagination, getting worse as time went on and people made each other worse as their imaginations fed off of each other. In short, there WAS no monster. Only psychic projection. That is why every other expedition ended up dead.

Well, I'm not most people, but this story somehow holds the third place in my personal New Who story ranking for about four years now ;-) It's actually my dream to direct a stage adaptation in Germany, but either you need to pay for the rights (I don't think so) or change everything beyond recognition (i don't want to).
