I think wilf is my single favourite character in the show. His refusal to back down to the military was brilliant, and with that line he knows what he was fighting for in WW2. The generation after him seems to have lost that understanding, if the ones I know are anything to go by. It wasn't a war against Germany, it was a war against the most incredible evil. And if that understanding is lost and modern British people see Germans as the villain of world war two rather than Nazis, right wing populism and hatred, then it will happen again. That was an odd ramble as to why I love wilf.

That scene with the family being taken away is one of the most heartbreaking scenes in Who (and that's setting a high bar with this show). It's the cheerfulness of the dad trying to keep everyones' spirits up just a little longer even though he knows what's coming. I'm getting myself choked up just writing that...

"It's too real. The world is sh*t." I hear you, Paula. I hear you. This is one of my favourite episodes of Who ever. Tennant's slow dawning realisation that Donna's talking about Rose gives me chills, and the Italian guy trying to keep everyone's spirit up as he's sent away to a labor camp just absolutely shatters my heart every time. The whole thing is a masterpiece.

A Doctor Who Elseworlds story, and it's pretty damn good. It shows precisely why the world needs the Doctor but also why the Doctor needs the world, in the form of his human companions because there are countless disasters he would have walked himself into by now. This theme will be deplored later on in the Specials but this does a great job of showing what the consequences of the world would be without these necessary partnerships, and how important Donna is. And the best part is that it's only part one of three!

I love how this episode is all about how the tiniest actions can have massive ripple effects, the butterfly effect. It really goes to show just how important the Doctor really is and how horrible a world- no a universe it would be without him. It also emphasises yet again how important it is for the Doctor to not be alone. It's quite shocking to realise that after losing Rose, the Doctor was willing to let himself die while drowning the Racnoss. The Doctor needs someone and Donna was there at the right place and at the right time. His companions keep him balanced, but at the same time he opens their eyes to new horizons, improves their lives and helps them grow as a person in so many ways. Just look at where Rose is now compared to where she was when we met her at the start of series one! He's done the same thing for Donna, remember her in "The Runaway Bride". Donna needs the Doctor just as much as he needs her because he's given her a purpose. Without that Donna still wouldn't see herself as anything special. She'd be left behind and always end up feeling like "just a temp". You come to realise in this episode that all the attitude and back talk is just a cover up and a way for her to hide her insecurities. Tthe feeling that she's let everyone in her life down, especially her mother. Which brings me to the great development Donna's family gets in this episode. You really get to know the Nobles in this episode, they feel like a proper family and you connect to them all. Especially Wilf who's just outstanding in this episode. He gets one of the most powerful moments in this episode, when the Italian (I think) family is being taken away... "it's happening again".... The character work in this episode is just masterful. The cliffhanger leading into the finale is also absolutely brilliant, Tennant isn't in this episode much but he certainly makes his mark at the end! II can't wait for the finale!!

13:20 You wanna know why this hurts so much? Because all too often we ourselves feel this way. Sometimes the world even tries to tell us we don't matter. And we believe it because we have this powerful and evil voice inside telling us that the world is right. I bet both of you have way to often this feeling that something you did is not good enough, that *YOU* are not good enough. Sadly that's how a lot of creative and especially empathic people feel. You probably don't even realize how much a "silly" little youtube show could mean to someone. Well it does mean something. It actually means a lot. To a lot of people. Myself included. Sorry for the rant... and the English. ^^

This episode is the reason Donna wasn't in Midnight, as well as why Midnight was mostly the one set with very few visual effects. To get 14 eps (13 + Christmas special) out of a 13-ep production period and budget , they filmed the inexpensive Midnight at the same time they filmed this episode, using two crews.

The thing that makes this episode so strong is that it proves how good of a character Donna is, regardless of the Doctor. I very much doubt that the Rose we saw in episode one would have been willing to sacrifice herself in this way but regardless of the Doctor’s influence, Donna was always a person willing to do the right thing with more to her than just a temp or a shouty accent.
@Gamelover254

Wasn’t Rose also the one willing to save the Doctors life knowing full well she could die in season 1? Also fixed the lever in Doomsday knowing she would be pulled in. Don’t bash another companion to make another one seem good. It’s kinda catty.
@Mrazmatmahmood
@Mrazmatmahmood 4 года назад
Rose in episode 1 swung herself across the room to knock the anti plastic on to the nestene consciousness. She could've fallen in herself. So from the very first episode Rose had it in her to do the right thing, even if it meant sacrificing her own life.
@Longshanks1690
@Longshanks1690 4 года назад
@Gamelover254 Um...that's not what I said at all. I said would the Rise of episode one, I.e before she met the Doctor, have been willing to do any of that? I personally doubt it. Now, is it the case that she very rapidly developed into the person who would and did do many impressive things in the service of the universe? Irrefutably, but that was due to the Doctor's influence, whereas Donna had that natural impulse. It's why Rose was much less willing to actually go against him, especially in Series Two.
@Longshanks1690
@Longshanks1690 4 года назад
@Azmat Mahmood Again, after she met the Doctor and had been introduced to his world. Maybe it's the fact that this episode received one of Doctor Who's highest Appreciation Scores Maybe it's all those references to previous episodes (1x12 Bad Wolf, 3x00 Runaway Bride, 3x01 Smith and Jones, 4x00 Voyage of the Damned, 4x01 Partners in Crime, 4x02 Fires of Pompeii, 4x04 The Sontaran Strategem), that reward the long term fans Maybe it's the reminder of how easy it is for anyone of us from losing our livelihoods Maybe it's the reminder that no matter how rich we are, we are all only a couple of bad decisions away from destitution Maybe it's the return of everyone's favourite companion Maybe it's the references to all the spinoffs (the Torchwood jingle, the Trickster's Brigade) Maybe it's the reminder of how authoritarian oppression can flourish (and wane) in the wake of national disasters Maybe it's the chilling return of the concentration camps of history (Auschwitz, Isle of Man, today's ICE prisons) Maybe it's because of the best acting performances by Catherine Tate & Bernard Cribbins Maybe it's the ease with which this episode triggers all the closet racist a-holes of the alt right Maybe it's the episode's Hugo Nomination but this may be my favourite episode of the revival. PS. if you get time to return to this episode, watching the "Next Time" trailer is totally worth it. It's one of the best of the entire show.

This story, the last before the finale, leaves you an emotional wreck. This is on purpose. It is structured like so to make the thrills of the season finale (going from the lowest of lows, to the thrillingest of thrills) that much more rollercoaster-y. Buckle up.

The best is still yet to come but keep some Kleenex handy, especially you Paula. ❤

Love you two, but please figure out your camera focus issues. Perhaps more light to cause the camera to iris down to a higher f-stop. Or if you can, use manual focus and set and forget.

Technical issues happen, auto focus can be a b*tch 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@KatAlysha Indeed! And if you are doing these on binge, you probably had a bunch recorded before you realized. You both have such expressive faces -- it's a shame when they are less so due to blur.

I swear that I thought that Paula got so broken that they got to blur the image. Glad that it was only the camera... And it`s true, Katrina and Paula say so much with their faces!

One thing Ive never understood is why that fortune teller at the beginning did what she did. why was she malicious and why did she want the world to change for the worse? nothing was said of it and there was no indication she was working for someone

She probably didn't know it'd be for the worst.
