I don't know why, but I love the idea that the Cybermen are just travelling around with what's basically a Doctor Who DVD box set just so they can spot him if he turns up. Always makes me chuckle.

I keep thinking back to the Doctor's line in 'School Reunion' when he said he used to have so much mercy, now you get 1 warning.

That Jackson Lake was hero material. Wouldn`t have minded a spin-off with him and Rosita, and the Doctor visiting them every now and then...

I just noticed something about Rosita I had never noticed before. She's essentially all of 10's companions rolled into one. Rose (the name is obvious), she's black like Martha, and she's opinionated like Donna. Shes's all 3, put together by Jackson Lake's mind.

Watching Paula and Katrina laugh hysterically over the biscuits really made me laugh.

From my memory, Russell T Davies was interested in doing a "celebrity" episode starring JK Rowling as herself in and among witches and wizards for Series 4 in the vein of the episodes featuring Shakespeare and Dickens in the earlier seasons. When Rowling turned down the request to appear on the show (as well as requests to write an episode of her own), the idea which never made it to the scripting stage was discarded.

When this first aired it had been 5 months since Journey's End and David Tennant had announced he was leaving. The title 'The Next Doctor' set off a wave of speculation in fan circles and the media beautifully played into by David Morrissey (Jackson Lake) in interviews etc. Although a generally light episode there is some darker material inspired by the Me Too movement, notably Miss Hartigan's reference to "yet another man come to assert himself against me in the night".

I think it wasn't until my 4th rewatch of this one that I remembered the exact story ahead of time and that he was NOT an actual future or alternate Doctor who'd lost his memory haha. Not that the truth isn't a great and emotional reveal, just they play it so well at first. ...But the "that's sonic isn't it?" is kind of a giveaway :)

At least the cookies could have had a "Blueberry" jam topping. :)

Is it just me or is the makeup on Jackson’s kid really weird? I thought he was a puppet of some kind the first time he was on screen. Idk what they did to that kid but he just looks off in every scene he’s in.

What I would love to see, years later, would be when Gatwa regenerates, that he regenerates into this guy (well his face anyway) the same way Smith regenerated into Capaldi "choosing the face of the father The Doctor saved from Pompeii." Older, more seasoned, but in a way, making this "Doctor"'s fantasy a reality. But, who knows what the current series Disney Who will bring.

I am really digging Paula's ginger look here, it's got a strong Amy Pond feel to it (you'll see) And don't worry, we totally didn't see anything get 'dropped' in this one... :|

My favourite Christmas episode.

I love you both so much. I would love to see you both react to a series that was popular (briefly) in the 1970s. There are blurbs on you tube but the full series is hard to find. The series was called UFO. Perhaps my fondest memories were the uniform of Moonbase. Not Helmets but wigs. Purple wigs. I also liked the interceptors.

FUN FACT: Russel. T Davis wanted to do a crossover with Harry Potter, the episode was going to have the doctor meet J.K. Rowling in the middle of writing her book until an alien device makes all of J.K"s characters a reality and The Doctor together with Harry Potter teamed up to fight Death Eaters and fantastic beasts to send Harry back home. This was during the height of Harry Potter's popularity. and it could have been fun with Danial Radcliffe returning as Harry. David Tennent didn't approve of it. But I so hope it gets picked up in the future especially with RTD returning as showrunner

This is an ok episode. All the stuff with Jackson Lake and the Doctor is really good. Their dynamic is really fun and it's clever how this episode plays with the idea of the Doctor meeting a future incarnation. I like the fun little gags with the Tardis being a hot air balloon and the sonic screwdriver being, well, just a screwdriver. What the Cybermen do to Jackson Lake is quite tragic and you really feel sorry for him. The parallels drawn between the Doctor and Jackson are quite poignant too. I also really like the concept of the Doctor being an ideal that any man can live up to. The Doctor remembering the friends he's lost at the end is a really emotional moment, unexpectedly so. The main problem with this story is the misuse of the Cybermen. They just aren't given enough to do and feel fairly inconsequential as far as this episode goes. This was their first episode in two series and they're the second most iconic Doctor Who villain behind the Daleks, so that's pretty unacceptable. Miss Hartigan was also a weakness in this story. Whilst I liked the twisted spin out on female liberation, she really wasn't given enough time to develop, so her final "redemption" of sorts kinda falls flat. David's performance in that scene and this entire story is extraordinary though, but that's like saying the grass is green and the sky is blue. The man had become so good at being the Doctor and had been doing it for so long by this point, that I think he could've played the role with his eyes closed. All in all, a fairly mediocre story. It's certainly not bad, but it's a bit of a come down after the consistent run of great episodes we've had in S3 and S4, imo. It would also rank at the lower end of my Christmas specials ranking. Onwards and upwards, hopefully.....Oh wait..... :(

I found this one meh. It’s watchable. Not my fav. I liked faux doctor though!

xmas episode

This was an ok episode, and I have come to appreciate it more over time, but it’s still not that good. JL and Miss Hartigan’s transformation are the most interesting parts but I still don’t think that warrants the Cybermen being in this episode, who were largely wasted. Still, at least that’s not an opinion I have of all the specials. ;)

I think that Ms Hartigan being the CyberKing - or driver of the CyberKing or whatever she was - was a pretty good twist. And I do really like how her mind and will are so strong that she ends up breaking the cyber programming. I MEAN, OF COURSE THAT'S USED AGAINST HER LATER ON, because as is the case so many times in RTD-era Doctor Who -- if a woman gets really powerful, well, they just have to be de-powered as soon as possible! UGH. Yeah, I just don't really like the resolution of all of that, when she faces down the Doctor at the end. Ten breaks her connection to the Cybermen and that makes her have this big horrified emotional reaction to everything? Or something? Like, out of nowhere, when she's shown herself to be pretty IN CONTROL of many of her emotions at most other times? Yeah, I just don't really get that scene -- except to me it kinda unfortunately smacks of the trope of WOMEN IN POWER BEING DEFEATED BY THEIR PESKY EMOTIONS. Or whatever. Ms Hartigan DEFINITELY deserved a better ending! Oh, and apparently RTD didn't like the ending of this story either - or at least AFTER filming, when it was too late to change it. Apparently, in the commentary he said the ending would've probably been better if Mercy had instead redeemed herself by somehow making the Giant Robot CyberKing disappear herself, instead of Ten using that weird-out-of-no-where plot device of the Dalek 'continuum dimension vault'. Yeah, RTD: and at least she might've not died so horribly either! I mean, the self-sacrificing nature of people in Doctor Who episodes isn't GREAT at other times either, by any means, but at least Mercy might've gone out with some agency by saving everyone! OH WELL. :(
