The second doctor has one of the saddest regenerations in my opinion, he didn't even get to live out his life properly. It was just forced upon him. As much as 10's death always gets me, at least he got to be a hero in his death. Technically speaking he didn't have to save Wilf, so even then he still had a choice. But yeah, for me this is the top of the list for sad regenerations (12 was pretty close too)
I love 7’s as well for similar reasons. After his whole life setting elaborate traps for his enemies and trying to see the big picture, he is accidentally killed in botched surgery. His final scream underlined by Puccini is awesome directing
I Loved Patrick's era the most for SO many reasons. Mostly because even during boring episodes Patrick is a delight to watch. Also, I love how they used sounds to create an atmosphere rather than have music reveal everything. Zoe and Jamie were lovely companions. Shall miss them til the day I am.
All the power of Space and Time at their fingertips. The ability to physically renew their entire bodies. And the best they can come up with to show the Doctor some potential new faces is a slideshow from a dodgy sketch artist.
at least they did not force the regeneration to look exactly like a dodgy sketch artist representation of a bipedal life form...that WOULD have been a rather awkward day to day existence even during the era of recreational pharmaceuticals
The Time Lords have such advanced tech, but the Doctor Who special effects department did not. Please remember this vid clip is from AD 1969 when special effects (by today's standards) were rather crude and the first generation of Windows (1.0) was not released until 1985 and the first Mac OS in 1984 and either system would have been capable of creating the visual effects which are commonplace today. Also, the Doctor Who budget was limited. In the late 1960s Sci-fi programs were not taken very seriously
It was just psychological torture. First threaten him with 3D (stripped of time travel), then with 2D - you will live out the rest of your lives as badly-drawn thumbnail sketches.
Beautiful! I am old enough to have watched THE WAR GAMES when it was first televised. It was sad to see Pat Troughton go - and Jamie and Zoe too. I hope they find more missing stories, especially The Abominable Snowmen. Would love to see that story again, in its entirety.
You have no idea how much I envy you for being able to watch now missing episodes all those years ago! Are there any other stories/episodes that stick in your mind?
@@MrBannystar Having watched from 1963 (aged 5) I was terribly saddened when Pat Troughton left, like I'd lost a member of my family. I remembered The War Games well and was delighted when the video of it was released to fill in all the gaps in my memory. One story that has really stayed with me though is Fury from the Deep, probably because it made the most terrifying impression on me at the time. I live in hope that one day the full story will be found and broadcast again.
For those of us who were kids during the Hartnell / Troughton years, we had no real idea "who" or what the Doctor was, and for me, the last two episodes of THE WAR GAMES were just awesomely exciting! The Time Lords, at that point, seemed like gods! In many respects, this sense of enormous power flowed into the Pertwee characterisation - he was one of "them". And then, we were introduced to a very sinister, dark member of their race -- Delgado's portrayal of the Master. Truly heady days. Today, with DVDs and RU-vid, etc, it is nothing to go back and watch whatever you like. Not so in the early 70s! So when the THREE DOCTORS was first televised, it blew me away to see Pat Troughton "appear" again, the first time I had seen him since the awful spinning at the end of THE WAR GAMES. Finally, there was something more atmospheric in those old B&W episodes which colour seemed to lack. I remember the cave scene in THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMEN with the glowing spheres piled in a pyramid-shape -- and I was captivated. It had a "mood" that bright colour may have lost. Again, I hope this story turns up again one day. People who haven't seen it have missed out.
@@fredericktaylor7890 *"Finally, there was something more atmospheric in those old B&W episodes which colour seemed to lack."* I 100% agree with that. That's one of the reasons why The Invasion is probably my favourite story. Thanks a lot for sharing your memories. And to echo what ghostgaming said, yes: Fury is being fully animated to be released sometime next year.
I loved THE INVASION. It is still very watchable today. In that scene where they use this electronic device to reanimate each Cyberman, I find the sound of it to be just as creepy today as I did nearly 50 years ago. I think I had nightmares as a kid about that sound, lol!
Ive always found this scene curiously unsettling even horrific . A race that decides a person's death and reincarnation in one go . Although narratively difficult . Imagine each doctor having a benefactor who decided when their time was at an end
Loved seeing this in color. I would like to see someone redo it with the faces he's offered edited as such: "He's too old (Peter Capaldi)...he's too fat, ins't he (later Colin Baker)...no, h'e's too thin (David Tennant)...that one's too young (Matt Smith)...oh, that won't do at all (Tom Baker)..." If only I had better (any) video editing skills...
even with all of time to mess about with, this is why even time lords can't have nice things when you have to contend with the arrogance and stupidity of others judging your motivations as being anything other than the lockstep conformity they expect and demand of you...no chance of creativity or seeing options other than the predictable and mundane...
@@daleksvscybermen im sure he did. so did 12 at least twice. I more sort of meant their personalities. 12 often remind me of 3, and 11 often reminds me of 2.
I know a lot of people say this regeneration is unsettling and dark, and I agree. However, it's for a different reason entirely. This was dark and unsettling because of the audio. Everything sounds so grim and sinister, I got chills the first time I saw it.
War Doctor: Hes too old! 6th Doctor: Well he’s too fat, isn’t he? 10th Doctor: No, he’s too thin! 11th Doctor: That ones too young! 3rd Doctor: No, that won’t do at all!
Given what was established after this about what the “change of appearance” is, not only do we know that the Time Lords essentially killed the Doctor here, but we could also take “change your appearance” to be a rather dark euphemism used by the Time Lord judiciary. Given how this Doctor was such a fun and good-natured clown type character, him being executed for trying to do good is a real punch in the throat for the viewer. Quite the scene!
Can we take a moment to appreciate how good Troughton’s voice-work was? You can tell he was classically trained for the theatre prior to working on film.
No digital rework required! I knew this existed, because I saw it on an American PBS station who showed it in 1991. I think the BBC lost the colour version, but the recording sent to the USA still had the colour clip. Many thanks for putting it up!
Mark Agate I’m pretty sure that all of Patrick Troughton’s stories were shot in black and white. Spearhead from Space was the first serial that was in color. If you remember seeing the Second Doctor in color, it was likely from one of the multi-Doctor episodes.
You're mistaken. None of Hartnell or Troughton's stories were ever recorded in color. Pertwee's were the first ever d one in color, and the only episodes Troughton appeared in that were in color were the three multi-Doctor stories that appeared after his run ended (The Three Doctors, The Five Doctors, and The Two Doctors).
I concur with the other comments here. Not only was Doctor Who not shot in colour at this time, neither were all that many other BBC shows (not anything meaningful at least). The BBC had done some experimental colour work, in a fairly low-key way, but apart from that it first went to colour in 68 but this was only 4 hours and only BBC2. Most of BBC2s output in 69 was in colour, with more colour on BBC1. But Dr Who wasn’t one of them. Spearhead From Space was the first Dr Who to be shot in colour in 1970.
"I knew this existed, because I saw it on an American PBS station who showed it in 1991" No offence, but people who think their memories can survive over 30 years intact are arrogant.
Hey Bernard Horsfall man that guy has appeared in both my favorite Troughton stories of all time maybe there both the same characters from The Mind Robber and The War Games
I only sore the new who doctors regenerations and they were all sad, 9s was bitter sweet, so was 12s and 10 and 11s had me crying but this one hits different, probably the most tragic and depressing regenerations of them all, it is so unfair he just had his life snatched away from him he didnt even know it was his time to go until then, if any doctor deserved to come back it was him!
That poor TARDIS prop at the end.... in such a beat-up state! Even the lens is broken! (Check the upper left when it switches from the model to the prop.)
Ahhh!! Love the ending!! Very well done, I wonder if the Beeb will go with colourised versions once all remaining missing classic stories have been animated?
And that is how the second doctor was forced to regenerate into his third life I like how it's in color it's a lot more cleaner I give it a ratings of five stars⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Yup agreed, the only thing that still needs fixing is the brown tinge on the screen somewhat. But this truly is one of the best colour jobs going that i've laid eyes on in friggin decades! A remarkable achievement in full agreement with you!
Looks like a seventies who would be cool as a option when it releases on blu-ray makes sense to have it as a option since it comes right before the first color story
Well.... the Second Doctor wasn't forced to regenerate immediately. He was used by the Time Lords for special missions until he was captured by animated scarecrows and forced to regenerate, as seen in a comic book. Season 6b is practically canon as it explains Two's appearances in the Three, Five and Two Doctors serials, as well as the Stattenheim control Two used in The Two Doctors.
@@tako_kawaii1749 Thank you for weighing in. Most people who feel that way don't watch Doctor Who clips on RU-vid. You may want to consult a psychiatrist.
The 2nd doctor hated the timelords for the exile on earth he did everything for galifey and this is how the master rebelled against them in a way,but in colour fantastic,re release them all in colour please.
This happened at the end of a series called "War Games." In some spaced criminals had transported various waring humans to a planet. They had Romans, The American Civil War, the Crimean War and some id UNIT.
I've seen 11 of the 20 stories, at least 6 more are on audio, not sure where the last three are, this second regeneration was cruel, but remember a time lord doesnt have to actually die to regenerate, Romana went form Mary Tam to Lala Ward without dieing
Skin color is too orange, but otherwise its is great. Would enjoy seeing a "view in color" option when the first and second doctor are released on Blu-Ray
Very good. I think the colours are a little saturated but maybe that's what the set looked like. I made a similar version of this scene myself so I know the colours at tough, you'd done very well. Very good quality, looks almost modern
If only Doctor Patrick knew that these pictures are the future Doctors that would come after him.........................Including one Time Lady named Jodie. 😉
