Just came here after watching Husbands of River Song. How long was Stephen Moffat planning River’s timeline?!?! That last night on Darillium makes Silence in the Library and Forest of the Dead so much sadder.
By this point Moffat was going to be showrunner, and he knew it. So River's notebook in this episode actually had all of River's timeline written in there. He had it planned since this before this episode, because he knew he'd be able to expand on it in his era.
ME first watching THIS: who is this?! She certainly know the Doctor the ending-THIS is someone that knows him! NOW-😥😥😥😥😥😥😥😥 WHY?! Deja Vu for her, now she knows how he felt! the ending-(imaging the Husband's of River Song)😥😥😥😥😥😥
Anyone else think it's just a bit mean the way they ripped those up? I mean that girl was clearly trying her best, she even needed help, and she looked so upset when they just ignored her.
OMG it just occured to me! The very first 'Hello Sweetie' is also the last 'Hello Sweetie'!! For us and the Doctor its the first time we hear it, but for River its the day she dies i.e. the last time!
this was the first Doctor Who episode i ever watched (and i was really young) so now anytime anyone says “who turned out the lights?” i either shut down or yell at them to shut up. this shit traumatized me
First watched: Who the heck is she?? She's so arrogant. Ugh. Watched it again after watching all of the eleventh doctor's episodes: NO MY RIVER NOOOOO To this day she's probably my favorite doctor who character (other than The Doctor, of course.)
I love the way this is shot. They way River enters all dramatically and then the camera zooms in as she reveals her face and says that line, like we already know who she is. Genius.
Yeah it adds so much impact rewatching it, cause you feel the large impact even more unlike the first viewing where we question if we have met this character before or why she has a big entrance
It's beautifully done partially because... if watched in chronological order, we're with the Doctor. We're literally feeling what he's feeling. And if not, well, we're with River. You can't help but be aligned with one of the two. This is still one of Moffat's crowning glories, I think.
they will see one another again after that if you paid attention during that episode she told him she was connected to clara, clara was gone so why was she still there
I mean, do you remember Cassandra in the end of time? 'Brings out a jukebox'. - This... is an iPod. Plays classical Earth music. Now, the music isn't what we would define as 'classical,' but it may be what they consider 'classical,' so I'll ignore it... I laughed at that - I'm sure Rose and the Doctor got a good laugh of it in their heads as well.
i got the chance to say that this christmas. My sister is dating an archaeologist and my work has me travelling alot and i love being vague about my work to new people. Anyways I met him and you know when you can tell someone a nerd or really up tight? I was like "Oh so what do you do for a living?" And when he said "Im an archaeologist"! I turned, looked him dead in the eyes and said "Im a time traveller, i point and laugh at archaeologists." After that we had a good laugh and ate, later he asked "SO....what DOES your brother do?" And my sister was like "You know, he never said. He just comes and goes every few months." So vague, so fun, so true.
"Got a problem with Archeologists?" "I'm a time traveler I point and laugh at archeologists" "Ah! *extends hand for hand shake* Professor River Song, ARCHEOLOGIST" Gets me every time😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@nightowl8477 because people are stupid its human nature really, not to mention anything british is beyond the comprehension of other countries and goes way over their heads
@@nightowl8477 it doesn't have to be intentional to be worth noticing or pointing out. Still makes for an interesting parallel when its not intentional.
Oh. I've just realised that the first time that she had met him, she was wearing a Space-suit. XD As Rumple would say: "When you know the future, there's irony everywhere."
The trouble is, it's all back to front. My past is his future. We're travelling in opposite directions. Every time we meet, I know him more, he knows me less. I live for the days when I see him, but I know that every time I do, he'll be one step further away. And the day is coming when I'll look into that man's eyes, my Doctor, and he won't have the faintest idea who I am. And I think it's going to kill me. she had no idea
First time watching this: meh. Don’t know her don’t care. Watching this after every single episode with River Song: “DOCTOR, SHE’S YOUR WIFE! HOW CAN YOU NOT KNOW THAT?!” *Cries throughout entire episode*
Same. I watch this for the creature. Was like oh no shadow bad. After a few years. I finally know why river is so important in this scene and I was like (old me, how dare u ignore a important moment)
I'm always amazed at how even though none of the actors new what her character would become, they still conveyed every emotion perfectly and supplied a great end to the story of River Song, who wasn't even fully fleshed out yet.
To be fair, 10 was not HER Doctor. Of course she loves him all the same with any of his regenerations, but 11 was her Doctor and so was 12 for the short time she had with him.
@@torigrant1211 She had 24 years with 12 and undoubtedly at some point in those years a working time machine. In short, she had forever. That’s always been the problem with Moffat, he always undercuts his sad endings that he’d previously established.
@@mrbubbles6468if she left Derillium, there was no guarantee that she would ever make it back. We do not necessarily know know where the expedition was being advertised, so the bait was always the danger.
No matter what you think about Moffat’s overarching plot skills, you have to admire the brilliance of his work with River Song over the course of 3 Doctors.
and he tried it again with his television version of Audrey Niffenegger's The Timetraveller's Wife, which unfortunately got cancelled after a single season. The novel was basically the inspiration for the Doctor's and River's relationship. I didn't realise it till now, but in the novel they also first met (from his perspective) in a library. 😅
@@HOTD108_ In this episode, she acted like she knew the face of David Tennant. She even wanted to compare the diary, which was odd even at the end of the story of River Song. But then she understood it is not the same face. This one was "way" younger. So now let me ask you, whose face, looking exactly like David Tennant and looks older then how he was? Yeah. 14th. So there is still opportunity for Alex Kingston to show up imo.
That must have seriously hurt. I mean u expect it as a time traveller but that moment when ur significant other looks thru u and says "get out!" Man that's gotta burn
"I'm a time-traveler, I point and laugh at archeologists" Eleven with Amy in a future museum "Wrong! ...wrong! ...sort of right but mostly wrong- ooh! one of mine! =) "
12: You married an android and you didn't even know it Anita: How do you know there not androids? River: cuzns I've dated androids and there rubbish. Haha.
‼️ WHOA... This just hit me... ‼️ The last time River sees the Doctor she's wearing an astronaut suit. The first time she sees the Doctor (as a child) she's wearing an astronaut suit. 🤯 What beautiful poetry.
The Doctor's problem is that he's WAAAAAYY too vague. "Hey! Hey you! Stay out of the shadows and go home!" (obviously the ravings of a madman) But if he was INSTEAD like: "Hey, there's an alien species here that lives in the shadows. We're surrounded. Stay in the light, get back in your ship, and fly away." (still might not believe, but less likely to go running into shadows willy-nilly all the same)
Seems to be a common way of building tension. Keeps happening, and it's annoying when you see it. Buut... if it helps, how am I to complain over the result?
S.A.M. It's because he's really smart so when he states something like that he expects you to get it and listen. Seems arrogant but it fits his character, because explaining something takes time and effort so he'd rather you just trust and do as he says. To humans he probably feels like he's explaining how a particle accelerator works to a 5 year old.
I posted that about 6 months ago. Also, time zones. Also, i dont have a bed time. I suffer from somniphobia (fear of sleep) so I usually don'tstart laying in bed until about 2am.
Gosh, what a brilliant idea. Build a brilliant relationship between a character and the audience, even when you know the end of the character from the beginning. Seeing the character development and not being able to say "save yourself!"
“The Doctor meets River Song” and “River Song meets The Doctor” are two completely different events. And that’s not even the most wibbly wobbly event in the series. 10, 11 and 12 all have a final goodbye with River Song.
River Song: "Whatever came here is long dead." Doctor: "Bet your life?" River Song: "Always." *The Vashta Nerada are not dead and River Song dies at the end of the arc.* Turns out she lost the bet and held up on her end of the bet.
Vashta Nerada only consume living matter. In the presence of Vashta Nerada, a Weeping Angel would quantum lock because the Vashta Nerada would be "looking" at it. Since the Weeping Angel would, thus, be inanimate stone, the Vashta Nerada would ignore it.
There's nothing irrational about fearing the dark. The dark contains the unknown and the unknown contains the potential for danger. Therefore, being wary of the dark means being wary of _danger._ It's one of the most rational, instinctive reactions in _existence._
On a less philosophical, more biological level, preadators are more often nocturnal. The night is their domain, and in the dark you'll never see them coming. If you stay in the light, you stay alive
It took me awhile to warm up to River Song. She's one of my favorite characters now that I'm rewatching the series. Though I do still think that they should have had her show up at least one more time during Tennet's reign as the Doctor, just so it would make sense that it takes her a moment to realize that she's never seen the Doctor when he was that young before. As it is right now, she's only really interacted with him as the 11th (and 12th does not count, given that that story is hinged on her not recognizing that form), so it should have been obvious that he was younger than she's ever known him.
@@Tan-whippie I mean, that’s nice. But personally I think it’s kind of bad story telling if you need to turn to a different media in order for a story to make sense-but that’s just me. I know that there are a lot of shows that do tie ins with books and comics and video games and more, but I just never warmed up to that trend,
+FictionalLives technically she saw 11th doctor when he was at his grave after her mind was stored in the archive thingy, then they kissed and she faded away
+Panda mania Oh, I completely forgot about that, but that was after she died though?? So ten would've still been the last Doctor she saw before her death, right??
If David tennant is cast as the 14th doctor it makes sense why River recognised the tenth thinking its the 14th, potential for River to come back for 60th as well.
This is how you do horror. Make it ubiquitous, never show it, imply that it will eat you. They’re everywhere, you can’t see them, you will die. I forget how genuinely terrifying Doctor Who used to be when it was good!
You know what hurts? This is Rivers death and we didn't know her now, just like the Doctor, she's no one very important now and then we got to know her and love her and it hurts because we know that she dies here in the library. We know how her story ends we just didn't know how much we would love her until later
I bursted out laughing when I first saw this, because I made a mistake a skipped this episode. So a while back I watched it but when she came up to him like "Hello Sweetie :)" and he instantly is like "Get out" I was like darn :DDDD
These two episodes and all the things River does (the diary, the "Hello Sweetie," etc.) make so much more sense when you go back to rewatch after seeing all the other River episodes. But it also makes it so much sadder. At this point in the show, it almost seemed like she would just be a one-off character like Jenny or Astrid. But you can definitely tell looking back that Steven Moffat had River's entire storyline planned out for a long time.
Hopefully someone may answer me here: first time river sees doctor not knowing him - Lets kill hitler episode. first time doctor doesn't know who she is - this episode. So...how did river die with the 12th doctor?
Rachel Ray She didn't know who the 12th Doctor was because she knew he was out of regenerations at 11, but didn't know what happened that allowed him to have more regenerations. Therefore, she didn't know to look for another face
2:26 LOL i love and hate this, its amazing how they both had theexact same reaction, but also kinda sad because ms, evangelista is just doin her best. lol
After knowing her timeline, this episode confused me. Throughout the episode River is trying to figure out if the Doctor knows who she is. In the husbands of river song, we see that river knows all of Doctor's faces therefore his timeline so she must have known that this regeneration hasn't met her yet. So that got me thinking, has river met the 10th Doctor before the library?Sure she might have seen him and not interfere or she might steal his tardis while he was away but she expects him to know her. She's surprised when he doesn't recognise her. Has anyone got an explanation for this, am I missing something?
Well, she doesn't know if they've met before in 10's timeline. She might, in her future. She doesn't know it's the last time they meet in her timeline.
Tenth was scheduled to have another episode with River Song, that's why Tennant's face in in her diary prior to her meeting him here. So yeah, she has met him before (according to her own timeline) but we never got to see it happen. That would be after the library in the doctor's timeline, and before the library in River's timeline. Hope this helps 😁
The Doctor: "Almost every species in the universe has an irrational fear of the dark. But they're wrong, because it's not irrational. It's Vashta Nerada." Me: Well thanks for that I'm never going to be able to sleep again.
In "The Husbands Of River Song", River stated that that night (24 years)was supposedly their last night together. However in this episode she calls for The Doctor on his psychic paper I'm guessing hoping for Matt Smith's Doctor but gets Tennant's as the message goes wrong!!
Andrew Wells How has no one else picked up on that in 12 months?! That's bloody brilliant! Maybe dust is another lie we tell ourselves hehe. You could also see dust as a Chinese whispers watering of Vashtu Narada. what's in the dark? Vashtu Narada, what's that? Dashtu Nada in the dark, Dusta, nothing in the dark, dust. Or I'm just a madman, without a box :-D
She told her father (Rory) that she always knew this day would come, the day the Doctor has no idea who she is, when he technically meets her for the first time. But she knew this was the Doctor because in the Husbands of River Song she had a list of all his faces, she just didn’t know how many doctors knew her.
I don't know why but fact the river met the 10th doctor, the 11th doctor and 12th doctor and have stalked 1th, 2th ,3th 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th doctor, river is a stalker xD, try to think if she also stalked the 14th doctor and she saw that he was a woman. Their relationship got more complicated..
