Clarion XL I’m pretty sure the reality bomb wouldn’t kill jack as it’s just so far beyond anything we have seen since. Also how could jack come back from his atoms being separated and turned into nothing. He would literally be unmade
Zakapholiac did you mean that it would? Because I would agree with that. Davros said that the bomb would destroy time itself and that’s what Jack is- a fixed point in time.
Pikaton659 yes my mistake. Yeah my point is that his immortality is still tied to the fact that reality exists in the first place. So I feel it will still kill him
"Oh, God... you're so young!" That line really hammers it in. She just truly believes they're going to die. There's not even "I have to stop this to let my son live" it's just simply... "Please, no. My son's going to die. He's too young. Please."
Elisabeth Sladen's acting in this scene is legendary, the Daleks are usually almost comical when they show up again and you roll your eyes at how they have magically survived this time. But Sarah Jane's reaction is crucial in understanding how nightmarish and horrifying there return actually is, she immediately assumes the situation is hopeless and that her son will perish alongside the rest of Earth.
They should have portrayed this as a more apocalyptical event. Everything just goes back to normal at the end of Journeys End. We even see it. Family’s and kids playing in the park. Like how? We just saw the Daleks opening fire on New York’s skyscrapers that’s a majorly damaged city right there. And if they do that to NY then you’d think they would destroy other cities too. That’s gonna take ages to recover from not to mention the millions of casualties and widespread hysteria that it would cause. I’d love to have seen more of the aftermath of these two episodes and the effect it had on earth. But no. If this really happened it would be an apocalyptical event. Even after Earth returns home the damage would be done society would be past the point of collapse.
@@joshuajames3822 I agree, but one of the main themes of RTD's run was humanitys ability to adapt and overcome even the worst of events. While a bit on the nose, it actualy makes perfect sence to me!
@@joshuajames3822 You can see how the Daleks kept most of the architecture intact, plus they may have time travelled a few months after all this happened
@@joshuajames3822 I think by now it should be clear from real life that when an apocalyptic event happens, people just get on with their lives to the best of their ability.
The absolute pure TERROR in sarah janes eyes will always give me goosebumps. Just remember, she's the companion who witnessed the creation of the Daleks and the first days of the Time War.
@@z_6077 yes the Doctor left her on earth but she saw the rise of the daleks. She saw what they were capable of. Either way, she was there at the start.
@@Spodogo Yeah Genesis is documented as the first ever action of the Time War, though it still doesn't count as part of that 400 something years the Time War spanned.
And then they were made into a joke in the final act of this story. You know when the Daleks think it would be a good idea to put the Doctor in the same room with the self destruct button for their empire which exists for some reason.
@@eclipsethezorua1905 It's a technobabble line to explain why they blew up. It's still completely brain dead for the Daleks to even have controls that can do that yet alone put them in the vault instead of on a different ship out of the Doctor's reach.
Speaking as someone who'd maybe seen a little bit of the original show as a kid,but nothing of Daleks, the first Dalek episode in the new show had me riveted, especially as I kept thinking, "What in the HELL did these things do that makes the Doctor so willing to be completely violent and damn homicidal towards them!"
My first doctor who episode was midnight, then I got all the hype from turn left. So i was so thrilled when I heard the evil voice. What could have possibly stole the Earth and make all those characters cry in despair. But then came rhe pepper can. Dalek caan and daveros were pretty cool though
As someone who grew up with Doctor who (literally. I knew what a Dalek was before I could even walk) even before the reboot, I had the slight side affect of never being scared of the Daleks. They just didn't creep me out, because I'd known them for so long. but this scene? This scene gave me chills. Its the only time where the Daleks have instilled anything resembling fear.
Haradion Drogon I get what you mean. They had instilled maybe panic, anger in the really good episodes, but this level of fear? Please, they’re a joke now.
I first started watching in 2008 so whilst I'd heard of daleks before this was the first time I'd seen them on screen. This is a damn fine introduction
Every time the Daleks come back, I think "What if this was their first appearance in New Who?" This would be the best one of them... After all these years, you hear "EXTERMINATE" over and over, see them swarm over Earth and take it with ease, and even see the new design and have them shout menacing things again.
That was the case for Sarah Jane. She hadn't seen the Daleks since Destiny and that was over 30 years ago and suddenly they come to Earth and threaten the life of Luke.
I still think "Dalek" was amazing. It did an outstanding job showing how absolutely overpowering one single, broken-down Dalek was in comparison to humanity. Eccleston's nailed the Doctor's reaction to them, the hatred towards both himself and the Daleks that he developed from the Time War. This would have been about as good an introduction, but I feel like "Dalek" was a lot more personal.
As a kid born in 2004, I never experienced Doctor Who like fans of the classic series or the earlier series of the revival. When I was 4, this was my first ever episode, the first time I heard a Dalek was in that moment with Sarah Jane. It's always stuck with me and personally, that does more for me than what Dalek as an episode did.
SamJNE most likely davros would have: A: tortured him for ever B: experiment with him as he is imbedded with the power of the TARDIS to a degree, giving the daleks a valuable specimen to attempt immortality C: turn him into a dalek hybrid
I've actually regularly visit that street Rose is on and been in that computer repair shop to service my machine. They charged me £25 and pretty much did bugger all with it.
I love this scene. The absolute pure terror in Sarah Jane's eyes is simple amazing. God rest her soul. The look in everyone else's faces says it all. True terror. Who is Sarah Jane referring to when she says "he was so young?"
I love Rose in this. Everyone else hears the word exsterminate, and their like, "Well were doomed!", but Rose... "Imma gonna go kick some Dalek arse!" It's freaking great!
Tamisin 731 Same, Rose is awesome, she was really brave and strong during this episode. "Imma gonna go kick some Dalek arse", go Rose, she's just great. :)
You know a villain is badass when they say one word and an unkillable man and two seasoned time travellers instantly shit themselves and say they've already lost
I love the little background bits: "Code Red: Dalek!" especially. To think UNIT had a code-word that immediately put Earth at total war status as soon as the daleks were known to be involved. It really emphasized how much of a terrifying threat the daleks were.
And how much the elites of earth had come to recognize the daleks. I mean, how often have the Daleks specifically targeted earth for their shenanigans? Which is why I got so confused how in #13's run, it's stated the UNIT was DISBANDED and practically nobody understood why daleks were bad news... The daleks have caused earth so much trouble they legit had the doctor on SPEEDDIAL. not even the Cybermen have such a effect on earth. The daleks are legit the one threat of the doctors rouges Gallery the earth knows enough about to combat against
The saddest bit is, Sarah has witnessed so much and in her travels alone, she has dealt with so many threats. That one word, is enough to completely break her.
I loved the episode because it reintroduced Davros and the Daleks without putting him in a next time trailer or some sneak peek. Not to mention, they didnt use a "______of the Daleks" title because it'll give away the big surprise.
@@mr.barcode3186 late reply, but you dont see the supreme, but you do hear dalek caan laughing right at the end i only remember because of how hyped that made me when i first heard it
Without watching any previews that come at the end of every episode, this actually surprised me. First I was shocked that Dalek Caan was back (or that's what I thought since he was the only living one at the time), then I realized an entire army was with him, and then to top it all off, Davros. One of the reasons this and Journey's End were so entertaining for me for a good two hours
This scene is so amazing and nostalgic, not only because it is my favourite episode but because how Sarah Jane remembers the Dalek from The Pertwee and Baker era of who, and how terrifying these things were and how many times and no matter what when she encountered them she came so close to dying, and now there nothing she can do, and how Jack remembers facing the Dalek Emperor and getting killed by the Daleks in The Parting Of Ways, and just how ruthless they are, and he can't help anyone.
Probably one of the most powerfully executed reveals in the series. Even though we know what is coming, the tension built up and the performances, and of course the thoroughly glorious music, make the revelation feel like it was truly unanticipated and thrilling.
So far Daleks were often comic relief, or just a regular enemy. But somehow hearing "exterminate" for the first time here absolutely terrified me. Awesome scene.
Though it will probably NEVER happen (as the budget for that would be enormous) but i would LOVE to see a true Time War battle between the Time Lords and the Darleks with hundreds of Darlek ships and Battle Tardis´s and bowships fighting and the Doctors Tardis in the middle of it mercilessly ramming through the Darlek ships like they where made of tinfoil, all the while leading the battle against the Darleks.
That's probably how they'll end the series itself, like the Doctor will finally say his name, then the Time Lords return to fight the Daleks, and practically every species involved in the entire show show up, and ALL the Doctors show up at once like in Day of the Doctor, but not just the first 13, and maybe as many companions as possible (including Rose, Clara, and Donna will somehow be able to remember him without dying, and Jenny the clone will come back, and maybe even Susan will show up)
Until RTD turned them into a joke by the final act since the Daleks thought putting a self destruct button for their entire empire in the same room as the Doctor was a good idea.
The dalek theme in this clip is brilliant. You really grasp the scope of the scene when you hear the word exterminate and the music slowly swells as you see their reactions
I always loved the reactions the characters have to the Daleks. You see the horror and terror in Jack's voice, on Sarah Jane and Martha's faces, Ianto is stunned, unable to speak; all of them have know what the Daleks are capable of. They know the inevitable is going to happen; thousands, if not millions are going to die and the one person who can stop them is nowhere to be found. Whereas Gwen and Luke, who have never seen or heard a Dalek are confused and panicked, the reaction from Jack and Sarah Jane is enough to convey the threat.
This moment right here! This is the perfect representation of what it means to live in a universe where the Daleks exist. They are not just a race of conquerers ethnic puritains. They are akin to a calamity, a natural disaster with no hope of survival. The only reason reality itself even exists is because of how the Doctor interacted with everything and everyone. All his companions, allies, enemies, all his actions both good and bad. This culiminated in three vertions of the only being who could stop the ultimate force of destruction. And by god this was an amazing end to a story, with the End of Time just being the dot over the *i.*
I love the layers of everyone's reactions. Martha: least amount of experience with Daleks so she's scared but still professional. Jack: Has faced the Daleks in direct combat and killed by them. Even though he's effectively immortal now, still frightened by them and declares that "we" are dead, including himself. Sarah Jane: Witnessed their very creation and their brutality from the beginning of their existence. She hears the word "Exterminate" and goes into a full PTSD freeze and mental breakdown inspite of all her experience with the Doctor and her own work. THIS is how you make an enemy terrifying and not just sad, when everyone hear's ONE DAMN WORD from them and panic sets in. Then of course in the next episode, Donna renders them sad and pathetic with buttons and a twist knob. At least Rose had to become a god to make them irrelevant.
Sarah Jane-eldest companion(forever remembered, forever loved) Jack Harkness-immortal(first death/revival caused by them) Martha Jones- companion during Manhatten Rose Tyler-companion (Van Sttaten complex & BAD WOLF) I replayed this scene up to 6 times yesterday because I couldn't get over how well they conveyed their fear once they knew what they were to face. It showed how serious the threat was and how affected they were from experience
I’m 26 and out of every TV show I’ve seen in my life I have yet to see anything that comes near the general area of the ballpark of the quality of this show. The acting, writing, music, everything. Otherworldly. No pun intended
Damn I miss when the Daleks were feared. Much as I enjoyed the Moffat run, he never was quite able to recapture that miraculous ability of RTD to make the Daleks a terrifying enemy despite looking like salt shakers armed with whisks.
Sarah remembered the Trauma she felt when she saw their creation all those years ago. Jack felt remorse for his comrades as he knows first hand what they’re capable of. Martha felt fear has she seen how ruthless they can be. Rose felt determination, anger, and sorrow as she remembers the Battle of Torchwood.
2:02 Supreme Dalek: "Soon the Crucible will be complete! We have waited long for this ultimate destiny! Now the Daleks are the "Masters of Earth!" All: "Daleks are the "Masters of Earth!" "Daleks are the "Masters of Earth!"
I'm no hater of Moffat, but I do think it's a shame his run essentially ignores the RTD's world building from the first four seasons. The reason the Season 4 finale was so great was because everything had been built up to that point, we know that Sarah Jane, Captain Jack, Martha and Rose have all encountered the Daleks before - we feel their dread because we have been there with them. These recurring Earthbound characters give us an anchor point to Earth that's a bit more personal than 'oh I'm from Earth so I should care'. To be fair Moffat has Vastra, Jenny and Strax for Victorian London and Kate Stewart, Osgood and UNIT for the present - but I hope Chiball brings back Jack, Martha and Micky during his tenure as showrunner.
Moffat can't world-build or maintain internal consistency. Unlike RTD, who built what was essentially a post-apocalyptic Who Universe in the aftermath of the Last Great Time War, he tried to use nostalgia and themes from Old Who to continue the show. And it kind of flopped. Badly. Moffat taking over was a disaster, and it ultimately killed the show.
Moffat (and now chibnall unfortunately) can’t come up with original good characters to save their lives. The reason the RTD characters are so memorable is because they didn’t just communicate with the Doctor. They had lives and people to connect to who we saw on a constant basis and made connections too. Jenny & stead etc. don’t work because we barely saw them and when we did all they did was make humor or spout exposition. RTD made characters, Moffat made Story pushers.
yeah the soldier saying we are at War has no idea what's really going on doctor to come to the rescue it's not going to be a war it's going to be a massacre humans have no chance against the Daleks
THIS is how Daleks should be treated, not as comic relief or push-overs.. they are a terrifying force that will always return to plague the universe, not some silly toy for writers to play with.
This is one of the most powerful scenes in Doctor Who. The way that the hope visibly drains from Jack and Sarah is blood curdling, the immediate resignation to their fates knowing that they're absolutely screwed, and the bone chilling fear on display perfectly encapsulates what the Daleks should be.
Moffat might’ve done some great things for Doctor Who from 2010 to 2018, but no one writes Daleks like Russel T Davies. Ive almost never seen despair like this anywhere else in fiction. The way that every character we’ve ever known freezes in fear and trembles as they recognize the Daleks, and they practically skip to mourning before the Daleks even reach earth. They know they can’t beat them, and even with Torchwood underground they can’t hide.
I'd argue this was the last time the daleks were any good. I can't think of a single dalek story I enjoy after this one. Moffat just didn't get them and even tried to write them out, and the less said about chibbers the better. I just fucking love this scene it's so good.
@@diccchocolate416 The daleks get done quite dirty in the final acf Journeys End, and it was the last story of the the RTD era in which they were featured, as much as I loved and continue to love it, the daleks defeat felt like a cheap and rushed deus ex machina of the season 1 finale.
I keep coming back to this scene because it's so well-done. It is such a great depiction of a hostile alien invasion, it reminds me of War of the Worlds
I _still_ wish I hadn't seen the damn trailer for this episode. This would have been ten times as powerful if we didn't already know it was the Daleks. Still a spine-chilling moment.
it wouldve been funny if the cybermen were amongst the the stolen planets and they attack the daleks who were probs still at war with the cybermen at the time
If you notice, Rose is the only one who isn't utterly terrified of the Daleks, and when you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Although she has been threatened by the Daleks three times, she always made it out safe and sound while the Daleks were utterly defeated. The first she met killed itself, she killed the Emperor and his fleet, then her and the Doctor sucked all the Daleks into the Void. She knows they are a great threat, but she has beat them at every turn, and she is practically guaranteed a reunion with the Doctor as a result, why should she be scared?
Elizabeth Sladen totally capsulated this scene! Everything she saw and lost all combined within her reaction to the Daleks. It’s one of the things I think is missing from new who now is the threatness of the daleks.
"Soon the curcible will be complete we have waited long for this ultimate destiny! NOW THE DALEKS ARE THE MASTER'S OF EARTH!! DALEKS ARE THE MASTER'S OF EARTH!!" Now that's a line that will send chills down your spine
I LOVE how rose reacts in this, everyone else gives up but not her.., though you can see it in her face shes scared she picks up her gun and goes off to find the doctor
She also the Bad Wolf, who tore apart an entire Dalek fleet basically with her bare hands. If she had brought that up when Davros was trying to scare her, it would have just made it so much better.
I love Sarah Jane's reaction. Seeing her hug luke whilst crying in fear. You can hear the dread and hopelessness in her voice. It hits harder when you realise that She's dealt with a ton of Alien threats before, but that one word was enough to defeat her.
@@georgeedwards8189 And when The Last Great Time War was put into motion with The Timelord sending The 4th Doctor to wipe out the Daleks Did The Doctor have the right to wipe out The Daleks? I think he's regretted it eversince
Coming back to this, the modern era really do the Daleks dirty. I never realized I was watching a show that gave me more narrative awesomeness than I deserved The Doctor, in the modern day, treats the Daleks like monster-of-the-week goons. I understand that now since the Doctor realizes they didn’t actually lead to the destruction of the Time Lords, the Doctor doesn’t hate them as much anymore, but they still pushed the Time Lords to the brink of extinction. During the RTD era, whenever they were on or off screen, they were always working on operations that would lead to global to universal destruction. Both in the Moffat and Chibnall era, they’re siting on their ass and literally doing nothing except react to whatever happens to stir the nest At first, I was skeptical of RTD returning instead of letting another competent writer lead the show, but this might actually be the next move. Plus this isn’t the early 2000s, I’m definitely looking forward to what he has to offer
When the immortal captain is terrified then you know that the Earth is screwed. This is when the daleks were scary. They need to make them scary again. DALEKS ARE THE MASTERS OF EARTH!!!!
It's going to take a lot but I hope RTD is able to bring back the fear factor of the Daleks. Moffat's era I feel did a lot of damage to their image considering he often overused them and portrayed them as the butt of the joke instead of something to fear. I much prefer when the Daleks are treated as this threat to the entire universe instead of just another alien empire. If you've ever played Stellaris: They should be treated as the endgame crisis instead of another empire.
This exact thing probably played out on each of the 26 planets pulled into the Cascade before Earth. Untold billions of Adipose, Pyroviles, Abzorbaloffs and whoever else, slaughtered like animals.
