You saying ‘I love Doctor Who so much’ at 10:44 with the musical score in the background, hit me right in the feels. It’s got it’s flaws, but overall this trilogy is so beautiful. You can feel in the writing that Moffat truly felt this was his last time writing his favourite show and Capaldi’s performance is as Doctory as it’s possible to be

The Moffat era is definitely the best written era of New Who in my opinion. Even though I favourite RTD1 more in terms of outside writing appeal whilst still being well written, you’re certainly right in saying that Moffat understands Doctor Who.

I disagree... I think moffats best writing is when his excesses are kept in check by another showrunner... I found much of his time as showrunner as a bit predictable and with some poor writing choices that jump the shark a bit...

Peter Capaldi, King of the Speeches! That final eulogy of his around the TARDIS might be a bit long and can't hold a candle to his "be kind" speech to the Master & Missy, but I do like that he and Moffat had one more victory lap, and it's a nice way to welcome in the new Doctor anyway. And now the Jodie Whittaker era! Very different, with its own unique energy, and a hell of a lot of fun along the way! :)

He's the Monologue Doctor so I always felt it being appropriate for regeneration. He held that regen for so long that the energy pent up would blast the TARDIS with tremendous power so that also makes sense. I also do love Jodie's regen once we see him react to that. It is theatrically spectacular and unique.

such an amazing episode. Along with the previous two-parter: having two masters, the previous montage of all the NuWho companions at the end of the last episode, the Cybermen, a Dalek, the brigadier, the sequence of all of the Doctors in the middle, the fact that 12's arch is used to 'teach' the 1st doctor what it means to be the doctor - if there were a 'last' episode, it could have been this. (plus all the music hehe!) also, the music in the last scene with 1 and 12 is called 'I am a good man' - it has never been released (along with the rest of s10's), but someone did a cleaned up version on YT.

Murray gold who does the music left in this episode with Moffat and reused a lot of his old music as a farewell. So in Jodie’s first scene at the end the piece of music called ‘the doctors theme’ plays. Which means even though there’s a new composer for Jodie’s era, every single Doctor in new who has gotten a scene with ‘the doctors theme’ included. A piece that wouldn’t be repeated in her era as the new guys not allowed to use Murray’s old themes

First of all I agree with you that Moffat understands Doctor Who so well. Especially in regards to what the doctor means to children,. To them the doctor isn't just a fictional character, he's real. This was highlighted in Capaldi's regeneration speech. I of course believe you can be a doctor who fan at any age, but there's something magical about watching the episodes when you're younger, and seeing a hero who's first response to danger and threats isn't violence, but rather trying to achieve peace. Here is my analysis of the themes of this episode. The 12th doctor begins his arch in series eight asking the question of if he's a good man. This episode gives an answer to that question. He is a doctor of war, but not a doctor for war. This applies to every doctor, with rare exceptions. At the end of the 12th doctor's first episode when Clara ends her phone call to the 11th doctor, she is still suspicious of the 12th doctor and treats him as if he were a different person. This hurts the 12th doctor, so he says to Clara he is right there and still the same person. He asks Clara if she has any idea what it's like to have someone you know look at you, but not truly see you. This moment is then later mirrored in Heaven Sent after the doctor's memories of Clara are wiped when he speaks to her in the diner. He looks at Clara, but he doesn't truly see her. The statement he says to Clara of how if he saw Clara he would know it was her adds to the sadness of the scene. In twice upon a time this theme is brought into focus a final time. For much of the episode the doctor doesn't believe that he is with Bill, despite the fact she has all the same memories and feelings as Bill. The doctor looks at Bill, but he doesn't truly see her. This is until Bill tells the doctor about the importance of memories, and he regains his memories of Clara. This finally helps him to understand that the simulations of the people he knows are for all intents and purposes real. The inclusion of the Christmas armistice shows the audience how just like the doctor, we too have the ability to choose kindness. The theme of kindness was set up earlier in the doctor's speech to the masters in the doctor falls. In Capaldi's regeneration speech he speaks to his next incarnation asking them to always try to do the right thing, and be kind. The doctor often goes through adversity, but it's his connection to his friends, and his want of doing the right thing and making amends that grounds him, and gives him the strength to carry on through adversity.

Wow indeed! Moffat went out with a hell of a three-parter and the finale is so superb. And Peter can show all his range from comedic to emotionally touching and just epic. Jodie's "Brilliant" also immediately won me over. As for the first Doctor being "changed": I think it is just a little exaggerated, the all over patronising of woman (not necessarily by the Doctor) is not so crass in Classic Who but it's definitely there. And I guess it's also a bit of a meta gag anticipating sexist comments coming from self-proclaimed "Classic" Whovians against Jodie's casting.

In the novelisation of this story the sexist remarks made by one are being made on purpose by one for the express purpose of messing with twelve. He’s having a little bit of fun with some last bit of mischief. That being said it’s definitely a bizarre choice from Moffat in the first place.

Hamza: "Wow" Ryan George: "That's good, but have you tried going, "Wow wow wow wow"?" Alright guys, Hamza's done with Series 10, that means he too now can ask where's the Doctor Who Series 10 soundtrack. The Doctor finally remembering Clara is really touching until you realise since that most likely isn't Clara, then that would mean somewhere out there, the real Clara still believes the Doctor doesn't remember her at all Also, not sure if you did react to the Human Nature deleted scene (I'd recommend it, nothing important but kinda funny), but when 12th said, "And never ever eat pears", it's a reference to both that deleted scene where 10th says he hates pears & to never let him eat one & 12th when he tells Clara why she shouldn't eat pears. The whole line about children being able to hear the Doctor's name is actually an answer Peter Capaldi himself gave to a fan during a Q&A. Moffat liked his answer so much that he decided to write it into 12th's regeneration speech. "Doctor, I let you go." Easily one of the best lines said by the Doctor. I believe that line too is a reference to 10th's final line "I don't want to go", though I'm not so sure.

Loved this episode since the first watch along as, im not going to lie, i thought the first doctor may have been like that. Since watching most of the first Doctor’s era, I find it actually hard to watch the scenes with him in because it does not feel like the same character. The rest of the episode is bloody brilliant though imo. I love the fact that there isnt really a villain, just the doctor trying to find one where it does not exist and the ending of the general is always bittersweet. Capaldi being my favourite doctor makes the regeneration hit harder too.

I think *broadly* each post-revival Doctor's era tends to improve as it goes on. That definitely applies to the Ninth, Tenth, and Twelfth (and I would say the Thirteenth) anyway. All of them have incredible episodes early on, don't get me wrong - but the hit rate improves as the character of each Doctor matures. For me the Smith era is the on exception - it wobbles in the middle, with S6 being a bit serialised for my liking (not something I mind in other shows but not so much in DW), but it does come back strong by the end. The Twelfth Doctor ends particularly strongly. I think pretty much universally all the Doctors get to end strongly though. And I'm always wary of setting expectations but I really like the Thirteenth Doctor. And I like how the next era feels very distinct - probably a bigger shift than the RTD-to-Moffat shift in tone. Onwards and upwards!

The only bit that i thought was funny about 1's characterization was when he said the jolly good smacked bottom line. Only because he said the same thing to Susan once. Which is still a weird quirk of the era it was made. Technically a gallifreyan would probably be above physical punishment in parenting. I think Moffat saw that line and decided to run with it. Which i'm not sure was necessary tbh. It's a weird decision, but in the end i'm ok with it because i love pretty much everything else about the episode itself. Especially the whole "it's not an evil plan" moment. It's always nice when moments like that happen. Mostly because they are so rare. This is my favorite regeneration episode by a mile. Outside of Classic Who anyway. Which would be Androzani. I just wish the rest of 5's era was that good.

The outdated lines for the first Doctor are probably the only thing about this story I don’t like. Fun fact, twelve was originally supposed to regenerate in The Doctor Falls, but Chris Chibnall, the next showrunner, didn’t want to start his era on a Christmas special, so Moffat wrote this episode as a sort of coda to twelve’s era. I think it’s viewed best through that lens, honestly. In my opinion, everything after the doctors leave the captain at the battlefield is perfect doctor who. Twelve’s lines, the cinematography, the music, they’re all amazing. I really hope you enjoy the Whittaker era, and I’m glad you’re going in with an open mind :)

The 1st of one life cycle (Hartnell/Bradley) & the 1st of another (Capaldi) helping convince each other to regenerate, following an encounter with some Cybermen. Love how this is narratively a minisode given space to breath (if that makes sense) + how theres genuinely no villain (unless you want to count the already defeated & "dying" Daleks). Someone did a comparison of Tenth Planet & Twice Upon A Time & they were really faithful (like only improvement would be 2017 Ben's delivery vs 1966 Ben's but geniunally thats being nitpicky) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-usPOYbM_3Os.htmlfeature=shared There was also some extra reconstruction footage, which is also pretty faithful = ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tiPJYDtV9MA.htmlfeature=shared With Hartnell/Bradley Doctor's sexism in the novelisation of Twice Upon A Time, apparently he was messing with Capaldi Doctor by essentially acting like an edgy teenager in front of Captain Archibald & Bill. (Admittedly Moffat didn't write the novel, so could argue that extra detail doesnt count). In the expanded Universe, Archibald is the Brigadier's Great uncle (and Grandfather)/Kate Stewart's Great Grand Uncle (& Great Grandfather). Edit: Great Grand Uncle instead of Great Great Uncle

A lot of people got upset over the way the first Doctor was portrayed here as old fashioned and chauvinistic. It wasn't supposed to be a reflection of the first Doctor per se, but more of the attitude of the times. Admittedly it does do a little injustice since Doctor Who has always been a little ahead of the times, but I do kind of see what Moffat was trying to do. Nice reaction. I'm here for the Jodie era, even although she's basically the Colin Baker of New Who. At the end of the day it's still Doctor Who, and I love it unconditionally.

Confusing on first watch but a fantastic end to one of the best Doctors. A lot skipped Capaldi and Jodie’s Doctors. With Jodie’s Doctor, Chin n Balls ( Chibnal) tried to reboot Who, so be prepared for something new, the first season has some great stories, it doesn’t get “brilliant “ until later on, don’t give up. Love the way your edits fly through the episodes with all the relevant info and reactions.

Glad it's not just me. Moffat committed what is called character assassination. When you change a known and established character so much that they may a well be someone else. They did the same with buzz in toy story 4

Well I really like this story, it's my favourite Christmas one some of the character points with the first Doctor is a bit exaggerated. I can kind of over look it but there is also a bit in the novelisation of this story that the first Doctor is doing on purpose to embarrass the twelfth.

Yes, they got the first Doctor wrong; perhaps before he met Ian and Barbara he could have been like that, but he certainly went beyond that in his adventures. I do think there is another reason with the Polly joke, but that would be spoilers.

I don't get why Moffat made 1st a sexist in this one, it's really weird, 1st was rude and all but didn't act like a human male of the 60s... love this episode, great video!

@mayotango1317 that was in the 80s with Hurndall, not the original first Doctor and I didn't like that either. The first Doctor just wasn't like that.

Yeah I think for a lot of this episode the first Doctor is mischaractised and I dislike it even more after watching Hartnell's entire era. He could be grumpy and a bit spiky sometimes but he was also quite mischievous with a cheeky smile, he's very charming and he certainly wasn't sexist, he treated his female companions like the QUEENS they are!

I know what you mean about the First Doctor saying very sexist things. It doesn't really reflect the First Doctor, which could be a gripe, but is playing on the outdated views of the 1960s. So - I am perfectly happy to just sit back and have a bit of fun.

I agree that the slightly sexist lines from the 1st Doctor are inconsistent with his character. I understand what they were aiming for, showing how far we've moved on from the sexist attitudes of the 1960s. But the Doctor is a Time Lord, not a human from 1960s Earth, so it doesn't really work. Otherwise, I mostly enjoyed the episode. I look forward to your 13th Doctor reactions!

The bit I didn’t like in this otherwise excellent episode was the portrayal of the first doctor as the stereotype of a sexist man. I realize the show was using the Bradley First Doctor to embody some of the prejudices of the time the show was made, but that wasn’t doc 1 at all. Other than that I loved this episode. I loved Mark Gates’s playing the elder Lethbridge Stuart (I should have seen that coming but I didn’t). And getting his memory of Clara back! Love his speech at the end😢. Capaldi was an amazing doctor.. just outstanding. I loved the Christmas armistice bit too! I had read about that in history and when I heard the singing I realized what the doctor had done. Beautiful! I will say as I grow old I see so many people believing stereotypes of how women lived in the past, but they weren’t true. This show said more about what modern people think of the past than what it was.

The First Doctor was portrayed as sexist in this episode to reflect the time of his era the 1960's but i think Moffat took those jokes alittle too far which is one of the reasons David Bradley is not the real First Doctor to me and a slight insult to Hartnell i think the only "one" time he said this was "The Web Planet" but i never thought of it as sexist when he "politely" asks Barbara to spring clean the TARDIS. I'm not sure if you caught it or not but The Captain goes by Lethbridge-Stewart who is the great grandfather of an important character of Classic Who Brigadier Alastair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart. Goodbye Peter Capaldi 😢 Welcome to the Jodie Whittaker era 😊

A lot of people like to shit on this story for being pointless with the whole there is no real threat twist but i honestly have a huge soft spot for it, since it's essentially a 1 hour character piece on the doctor post revival era. The only thing that doesn't work for me is the whole making the 1st doctor misogynistic. If it was a one time gag i wouldn't mind but the fact that they kept coming back to it, it felt like a very cheap way to show how the doctor has evolved to a better person throughout his life.

I think what makes one’s “jokes” so grating is that they’re that. They’re clearly written to be this uncomfortable attempt at sexism. Whilst if one did it during the show it clearly was just ignorance on the writers behalf. But also this episode is excessively exaggerating how much he does it. He did it like 3 times over 3 years 🙃 But yeh loved this reaction as always! Crazy to be here already.

I think david bradley did a great job at portraying William hartnell. But his portrayal of the actual 1st doctor is not that spot on. He doesn’t have the same cheeky twinkle that hartnell brought and just comes across as someone who has never actually seen the first doctor, only playing it as a grumpy confused old man. Still entertaining tho

This is very much a Wow episode - tarnished only by the awkwardly sexist characterisation of the First Doctor; which comes over as a cheap joke, used too often. To counter that,Moffats resolution to the Captain's storyline is possibly the best piece of writing he has done for the series. It never fails to move me.
