Another fantastic thing about the Magic Cup "ice cream" is that it doesnt melt to a thin liquid like other ice creams, so it can usually be enjoyed by patients who need thickened liquids, whereas normal ice cream usually wouldn't be advised/allowed because it melts in the mouth. 🍨

Hospital SLP here, just down the road in Toronto. You both did so well presenting and explaining IDDSI diet textures and liquid consistencies! Well done docs :) a note about thickened liquids being not as bad as patients report - things like thickened orange juice (which can already vary a bit in thickness) feels more subjectively 'normal' than something like thickened water, which can feel weird - especially when it's been sitting out and not cold from the fridge, and especially when it's the pre-prepared lemon flavoured water (I think it's almost always flavoured with lemon to mask the preservatives?) I can tell you that room temp thickened lemon water isn't usually the best experience or most thirst quenching, but you're right, cold thick juice usually isn't too bad at all! Keep up the great work, always love your content.

Agreed Vicky, though unfortunately the health service I work at has switched to bringing in frozen food. The food used to be okay and at least cooked at our major campus and transported out. But now it’s contracted out and brought in frozen and it’s honestly truly gross, to the point that patients just won’t eat it. Having had my own mum in hospital recently, I’d bring in food (thankfully it is now allowed within certain guidelines). I also tried many of the foods she was served and some really was inedible due to texture, temperature or even the cardboard packaging flavouring the food way too much. The rest was just meh. I’ve worked Private too and that particular company (Epworth Health) has honestly amazing food, and I was patient myself there a few times. I really saddens me that there can be that divide. However the food at some of the more metro hospitals is better, like the Austin and Mercy hospitals. Their food, at least a decade ago, was pretty good. In terms of cafeteria and staff food, the major hospitals are tending to contract to big corporations like Zouki. It’s a bit sad in terms of the cost factor for people, but the standard is undoubtedly superior and I would actually plan to eat at the hospital during times I was visiting a place with one of the huge multi location eateries!

Sending lots of love from a fellow Canadian. I'm a menu planning dietitian and dietary manager at a hospital. There are so much work that goes into providing a good meal in the hospital: nutrition, special diets, production/service system operation, food safety, food availability (you won't believe how supply chain has been messed up since covid), budget, and so much more. It always brings me so much joy to see people enjoying the food. And thank you so much for advocating for food as medicine in the hospital setting. Food and nutrition is such a big part of treatment and can reduce the length of stay and get people better sooner❤

If they have a dietitian for a video, they should show the full scope of what a dietitian does in the hospital. I studied dietetics (didn't become an RD but that's a different story). Whenever I told people what I studied, the only thing they ask about or talk about is diet planning and nutrition advice. No one seems to realize how much time we spent in MNT class learning how to use case studies and lab values to calculate enteral and parenteral formulas as well as route of access, and stuff like that. I would imagine SLPs feel the same way about things like swallow evaluations -although I have to say that the name of their career field is much to blame for that.
@DesiRDN
@DesiRDN Год назад
@catinabox3048 I completely agree! I sometimes feel like even doctors don't fully comprehend the value of a dietitian in a hospital setting (not generalizing though). There are literally studies that conclude how a dietitian can lower hospital costs (for both patient and hospital) and patient re-admissions by using MNT. I don't think I'll be a clinical RD once I graduate, but I'm excited to have my clinical rotation starting this August, so we'll see how that goes. There's a lot of science behind nutrition and that's what I love about the field 💚 Thank you for mentioning that 🫶🏻

I had a cerebellar stroke 3 years ago (my second at the time) and I was kept in the hospital for observation for 36 hours. Someone from dietary came around with an iPad to take meal orders and when I mentioned I followed the AutoImmune Protocol, a dietary supervisor visited me to make sure they got things right. The two subsequent meals in hospital were incredible! (This is in Florida) AIP for me is no milk (I can have small amounts of cheese, yogurt, and butter); no gluten; no nightshades; no legumes; only olive, avocado, sesame, or coconut oil; and no eggs. Dietary hit it out of the ballpark - I got trays of fresh fruits, vegetables, and grilled chicken or bacon.

Nurse here; our hospital has so many different diets and consistencies of food they support it's really impressive. The food does tend to be a little bland as it's all slightly underseasoned and low on spice. Fish and chips on Fridays, Sunday lunch and the ice pots are the favourites. We sometimes make nutrition "shakes" for patients who need support using the fortified milkshake powder, full fat milk and vanilla ice cream shaken up together.

The first time, three menus were left by my bed One for breakfast, lunch and dinner and you had to circle what you wanted to eat on each menu. There were limits of course but I circled everything I was allowed 🤣! The second time I was hospitalized was 20 plus years later and IF I wanted to eat, I had to call up the Dietician Office and give them my name, hospital room number and then give them my order from the one huge menu that was in the room already! Those flavor packs sound genius. What I remember about hospital food is that there’s a lot of science behind it. What looks and tastes like nothing much is completely customized for you to give you highly digestible nutrition with the least likelihood of side effects. We’re so critical of how something looks, tastes, and feels, but remember: you’re in the hospital! Their #1 goal is to keep you alive.

My very close friend of 35 years was diagnosed with Young Onset Dementia at age 57 and sadly passed away at 59. I was responsible for him legally and financially. In one of the institutions he was in, I felt they were neglecting him by feeding him too fast and drugging him during the day to keep him quiet. Many times I would find him fast asleep during the day in his "tilt wheelchair" aka "gentle restraint." One time I found red liquid coming from his mouth that I thought was blood but turned out to be red jam. They had put his meds in jam and didn't even bother to wait until he swallowed. After I removed him from this place the hospital speech therapists and dieticians assessed him and where he was getting thickened boring food at the place of neglect, the hospital specialists had him eating scrambled eggs and other solid foods. I was so happy that in his final few months, he enjoyed his food again. I am very thankful for nutritionists and other specialists. They are VERY important. Thank you for highlighting.

I worked in food service at a hospital in Connecticut, USA for 15 years back in the late 90’s through mid 2000’s. I started by doing food prep for many years and eventually worked my way up to the Diet Office. My husband worked there too,back then, and we met on the tray-line where he trained me on the beverage station. We’ve been married for 31 years now! We loved seeing it all again in your video. We had the same exact dish machine back then and as you guys explained the thickened liquids and pureed foods and such, we were nodding our heads, remembering it all. When I was in the hospital monotony meal time was what I looked forward to the most. Thank you to all the food services people.

This is AMAZING!! I was in the hospital for diabetes related issues 6 years ago. I got no choices, no carb counts, and had meals where the number of carbs per meal varied wildly. I'm so glad things have come so far!

Wow, The amount of specialized diets,and attention to detail that went into this Hospital’s Diet/Food services department is a cut above . Wonderful information here. Thank you both

So glad to see you guys doing this! I’ve had a couple long hospital stays, two of them being close to a month and needless to say food variety and quality can vary widely between hospitals depending on how their system is set up. I can’t believe in all these years you’ve never tried it once! 🙏🤷‍♀️

Thank you so much for this video and shining a bigger light on clinical dietetics and speech path! I am a student dietitian based in Melbourne, Australia and work in the food service department at a private hospital. I would say that there is higher quality and effort for the presentation of food (for example, texture modified foods) in private hospitals compared to public, however the type of oral nutrition supplements available are still the same! Nevertheless, as you've touched on nutrition is super important in a patient's stay in the hospital and us dietitians love it when they are eating well and not losing weight

Thank you so much for posting this. I have worked as a cook for 8 years in a hospital. Food and Nutrition is never given the type of credit it deserves.

I love the food at my hospital. It's actually so good people go there to the cafeteria on a regular lunch break.

I have to thank the hospital that gave me a cake for my 40th birthday. I was dying from Covid. On a ton of oxygen. No visitors were allowed. That made me smile, though. Duluth Minnesota Hospital!

Fun vid. We used to use tablets to get meal orders in our hospital. But now patients can ring and order a meal whenever like room service

So my mom just got out the Hospital a couple weeks ago from a fractured femoral head and she said the food at both hospitals she was at (they sent her to another one for rehab) was honestly really good and they gave her huge portions. So much that she couldn’t finish it all but she said it tasted like good old home cooking just a slight different tasteb

Wow! There's so much variety in the foods! That's fantastic to see as a RN. I remember working at a private hospital here in Australia and we had the thickener powder, which we had to add to fluids. The instructions were 1 scoop - mildly thickened to 250mL of fluid, etc. So much easier when they're pre-prepared though! Great work!

I spent a couple days in the hospital after i broke my ankle and the food was surprisingly good. I have major dietary restrictions so the dietitian came and talked to me on an individial basis so we could work out good nutritional variety while keeping within what was safe for me to eat. I am so used to people hating to try and work within it but was so grateful to the staff for being so kind and willing to accommodate my needs. Hospital kitchen staff are mvp.

When I worked in LTC our food service workers were amazing! They knew everyone’s preferences and would always go above and beyond to make sure that our residents were eating well. Love them!

The patients with breathing problems finding chewing exhausting was so interesting and made so much sense. Chewing things when I have sinusitis and can't breathe through my nose is SO frustrating because you can't breathe and chew at the same time or end up choking if you actually do

Right? When I have bad health days I have foods that can be consumed with a straw like smoothies or blended soups.

That was amazing and so much fun!!! I love both of you doing videos!!! 😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤ Back in the early 90's I had to have surgery at a hospital in Las Vegas where I lived at the time. The food was horrible!!! The jello tasted very stale and had a refrigerator taste to it and the hamburger I had was stale and tasted terrible!! I'm so glad that hospital food has 100% improved since then!!😍😍

I like the different ofood textures also allow the patients to eat with less assistance. Keeping that autonomy as much as possible is so great
