canadian whose been hospitalized in the same province as these guys here, the food wasn't mindblowing or anything, and i dont think there was as much variety as these guys are showing, but it was perfectly adequate and all for free

Hospital food in New Zealand is absolutely rank especially if it’s a public hospital. Hospital food in private is waaaayyyyy better!

They gave my dad a bitterbal after his infarction. It's not that good healthwise but it will help people through a difficult time. Just one to make it though. Everything else was like spot on healthy.

This is so true, I remember one of my favorite people in the hospital ,when there for 3 weeks ,was the guy who came and brought fresh linens. He was always in a super good mood and just a joy to have in the room.

And evs cleaners! We are often forgotten but your hospital would have so many more infections without cleaning crew

Agreed Vicky, though unfortunately the health service I work at has switched to bringing in frozen food. The food used to be okay and at least cooked at our major campus and transported out. But now it’s contracted out and brought in frozen and it’s honestly truly gross, to the point that patients just won’t eat it. Having had my own mum in hospital recently, I’d bring in food (thankfully it is now allowed within certain guidelines). I also tried many of the foods she was served and some really was inedible due to texture, temperature or even the cardboard packaging flavouring the food way too much. The rest was just meh. I’ve worked Private too and that particular company (Epworth Health) has honestly amazing food, and I was patient myself there a few times. I really saddens me that there can be that divide. However the food at some of the more metro hospitals is better, like the Austin and Mercy hospitals. Their food, at least a decade ago, was pretty good. In terms of cafeteria and staff food, the major hospitals are tending to contract to big corporations like Zouki. It’s a bit sad in terms of the cost factor for people, but the standard is undoubtedly superior and I would actually plan to eat at the hospital during times I was visiting a place with one of the huge multi location eateries!

You all do a great job and are often part of the forgotten section of hospitals, unless it’s to complain of course!

If they have a dietitian for a video, they should show the full scope of what a dietitian does in the hospital. I studied dietetics (didn't become an RD but that's a different story). Whenever I told people what I studied, the only thing they ask about or talk about is diet planning and nutrition advice. No one seems to realize how much time we spent in MNT class learning how to use case studies and lab values to calculate enteral and parenteral formulas as well as route of access, and stuff like that. I would imagine SLPs feel the same way about things like swallow evaluations -although I have to say that the name of their career field is much to blame for that.

@catinabox3048 I completely agree! I sometimes feel like even doctors don't fully comprehend the value of a dietitian in a hospital setting (not generalizing though). There are literally studies that conclude how a dietitian can lower hospital costs (for both patient and hospital) and patient re-admissions by using MNT. I don't think I'll be a clinical RD once I graduate, but I'm excited to have my clinical rotation starting this August, so we'll see how that goes. There's a lot of science behind nutrition and that's what I love about the field 💚 Thank you for mentioning that 🫶🏻
