A documentary of the Police and their battle to contain the antics of Portsmouth's 657 crew . For a small city Pompey's best lads punched well above their weight and gained national notoriety for their antics, particularly away from Fratton Park. A natural progression from the Pompey Boot Boys of the 1960's this tasty little firm came from Portsea Island. Being the most densley populated City in the UK the boys had a great degree of loyalty to each other as they were mainly close mates.
IT has to be understood that Firms in the 1980's were a progression from the original skinhead crews of the 1960's and they represent British culture of those eras. It was about fashion, music, camaraderie, turning your nose up to authority. It was about the emancipation of English youth. In the 1960's hooligans of the skinhead era were aged 13-19. By the 1980's most were in the age range of 16-25...still very young by today's standards.
Most of these guys were not career criminals, it was about pride and defending your manor. Such was the bad feeling between Millwall and Pompey during this era that Pompey were banned from Cold Blow Lane and Millwall banned from Fratton Park after years of bad riots.
Interesting how the Police Superintendent at that time introduced plain clothes spotters at away games to prevent the crew invading opponents home ends. The use of CCTV and proactive policing eventually curtailed the activities of English firms, although even today there are odd incidents.
What is shocking in this video is the way Everton fans were treated in the game highlighted in this video. The complete unpragmatic stance taken by Police against 100 Everton fans who travelled without tickets. Here you will see jobsworths in action with their triumphalist attitudes against some decent Everton Lads. Pompey became the only club in England where you couldn't pay cash at the turnstiles. The Police made every game all ticket resulting in Pompey losing 4-5000 from each home game. This was to cause a severe cash crisis that undermined our legendary managers(Alan Ball) efforts to stay in the top division.

It wasn't. Thatcher was busy destroying British industry, there was mass unemployment and mass poverty. Saying that, it was not as bad as times are today; we had had less than ten years of Thatcherism then, now we have had 40 years of its destructive effects to live with.

Arsenal's The Gooner and The Herd was one of the best too, with their distinctive 'E-I-E ' chant before causing a mayhem. Guess that's all left in the past since Arsenal is now more of a family and tourist club and any Arsenal fans associated themselves as Gooner while The Herd is close to non-exist since they stay undercover and hidden from the public

As a 🇨🇦 *CANADIAN* 🇨🇦 kid who at one time lived in England, … Northwood, Middlesex from 1977-1982, I was always _fascinated_ by the hooliganism associated with football. I used to travel up to go see Watford games. ~ (But I am still a Liverpool supporter to this day) ~ Not that Watford really had any issues at the games, at least that I saw, but I was still excited to see the passion of the home fans and the visiting fans. I’ve often wondered for those that received lifetime bans, from even back then, how was that enforced and if the ban is still enforced to this day (2024)?? 🤔
@alfiegrove7233
@alfiegrove7233 Месяц назад
some people were banned indefinitely from the 80s but it was not common. As you heard from my club at the start Brighton, people would be given infinite banning orders but that was really just a reflection on my club at the time and the attitudes towards our fans (they hated us and hence why we had all the problems in the 90s, in short they were poncey londoners lol). it would usually just be fines which were a slap on the wrist really even back then but it soon changed with Thatcher. They give banning orders out like its candy now and you can get it at some clubs just for swearing or being supposedly obnoxious, funnily enough pompey is a example of that now and is quite the contrary to how it was back in the day. We mostly have online tickets now with your ID attached so you simply cant get into the ground without being flagged up. They use facial recognition with help and aid of police too on game days, and a lot of hooligans epsciallyyyy england fans have to sign into a police station at certain times when games are going on. Or for england hooligans it would be handing there passports in so they cannot travel abroad, and hence why you see regular england fans getting battered by mma trained hooligans from the mainland because all of our hooligans past and present cant leave the country. Hope this helped mate! to clarify also, indefinite bans at football during the time you watched, would be after going to prison for football related violence and or for numerous incidences over time.

@georgemacpherson1992
@georgemacpherson1992 9 лет назад
Not sure why. According to them it is the club who decided to stop selling tickets but the club would turn round to the police and say that is not true and they would have wanted the extra 500 unsold tickets to go to the Everton who were outside in the streets. The people who were in the street outside the ground who were dined entry weren't even football hooligans they were just simple supporters who went to Portsmouth only to support their club. It goes to show that the police always obey the Tories since this would have been filmed during the Thatcher era.

wolfington you're right that was west ham and united it was toe to toe all day the moment icf got off the train it was the best they ever tried at o/t..fair dos they were on top in the morning but as more united grouped up the more on top we got by 1pm we had them on their toes to the ground they re grouped and started ealking round the ground twatting scarfers..afterwards we had it with them again toe to toe to the station..to be fair it was tough but we edged it at the end but best firm to come and actually look for it at o/t👹👹

@@anthonyjones1831...yes I might have been a bit too early with the mib then and of course icj was well established, but regardless, United had an awesome firm in the 80s whiched morphed into the mib..great times!😜👹

One thing gets me is all the bull about the hatred between pompey and saints going back 100s of years. Maybe in the 2 cities it did but a lot of both clubs support comes from rural Hampshire. My grandad was born in Brockenhurst and watched pompey in the 50s (wonder why) but still liked the saints. My dad watched the saints for donkeys years and took us down as kids 40 years ago and we still support them. But 2 of my cousens are pompey through and through. Also as a teenager I had school mates from Alton who likes pompey, so 1 week I would go with them to fratton park and the next week they would come to the dell. I dont mind pompey doing ok as long as they are not above the saints.

Stafford had a housing scheme that was nicknamed 'Everton estate'. Graffiti could be seen from the train south of Stafford station.
