I just did mine. Man those 4 holes was pretty tight for mine. I hope it's not to tight. I checked the overall inch pounds on the pinion shaft with my indicator and I'm within spec. But it still felt to tight to me. I really had to pull hard with that tool

Nice video, looking like I may be doing bearings on my rear diff sometime in the near future, adjusted my backlash today but it did not get rid of my vibration. According to the FSM I have, the bearing cap bolts are supposed to be torqued to 207 ft/lbs. One step I am curious about that you didn't show is getting the pinion depth measurement, did you perform this with a pinion gauge set or pick a predetermined shim that got you to a depth within the tolerance range and then use backlash to compensate for the rest?
@TorqueKingTV
@TorqueKingTV Год назад
207 ft/lbs seems excessive for a fastener this size going into a cast housing... However Chrysler has been known to make multiple changes to specs in different years of the same model. For this video we did not have AAM depth tools at the time, so we followed the factory recommendation of using the original shim when replacing original bearings. The original shim in most cases is the proper thickness for replacement OE Gears as well. Anything aftermarket will require complete setup from scratch. If you have a vibration, check your rear slip yoke output or front driveshaft CV. You may need a new bushing along with a transfer case overhaul or front driveshaft rebuild.

Nice video man! Just want to double check something, after setting the proper backlash you set the preload by moving the adjuster 6 holes for new bearings, is that 3 holes one side and 3 on the other? Thanks!
@TorqueKingTV
@TorqueKingTV 9 месяцев назад
Generally you set to 0 backlash and back off ring gear side nut 3-4 holes to attain a few thousandths backlash. Tighten pinion side nut and rotate diff to seat bearings and verify backlash. Adjust as needed. When desired backlash is obtained, install lock bolt in ring gear side. Loosen pinion side nut then tighten until contact with bearing cup (less than finger tight). Then, tighten nut 6 holes for new bearings, 4 holes for used.

That's all Hollywood smoke and mirrors, it often takes more to initiate the crush on those dang things than what the final nut torque is.

Good eye! We no longer do service work here, after filming all axles (or whatever we film) are disassembled and used parts are either sold or retained for later reproduction if they later become discontinued/ unavailable. In some videos you may notice we reuse all bearings and seals for video if they are not destroyed during removal. For the few videos we do record for rebuild to put back in service (borrowed from a customer), everything does get replaced. So far, the wheel hubs on this axle are something we now produce due to them being otherwise discontinued.

When you took the tone ring off, why is it back on in the next clip removing the ring gear?1
@TorqueKingTV

One of the shots probably had to be redone and the ring was put back on. Ring removal is not required for most service procedures, but we included it in case it is.
@jasonbundy7600
@jasonbundy7600 Год назад
Can you explain why the tone ring is not reusable? And as stated in an earlier question, dose it have to be removed for a gear upgrade/replacement? Thanks....
@TorqueKingTV
@TorqueKingTV Год назад
Hi- as per the Chrysler service manual it is not reusable. HOWEVER if for some reason it needs to be removed it could be reused if removed carefully and maybe a bit of sleeve retainer added when reinstalled. I believe their concern is stretching from improper removal. It is not a requirement to remove it.

Is it possible to get the 3rd member to tight? I adjusted my bearing preload with that tiny tool and it took some pretty good leverage with my ratchet. Is it supposed to be that tight? I mean i did check overall pinion inch lbs after i finished and im sitting at 40inch pounds total from the pinion and 3rd member preload. I just dont want that 3rd member to tight. Might overheat if i got the preload on the third member to tight right?
@TorqueKingTV
@TorqueKingTV 2 месяца назад
You should be ok with pinion at 40, the diff adjustment should also be fine if you followed correct hole adjustment. The bearings end up getting preloaded several thousandths, so it is tight with the tool.

Do u have the pinion seal replacement procedure for this type of axle ?
@TorqueKingTV
@TorqueKingTV 2 года назад
Replacing the pinon seal on an AAM 11.5. After removing the drive line. Check the rotational torque on the pinon nut and remember this number for reinstallation. Next remove the pinon nut and flange using a puller (lots of options for pullers). Next remove the outer pinon bearing and crush sleeve. The first step for reinstallation is to install the NEW crush sleeve, the outer pinon bearing the new pinon seal. Be sure to check the drive line for wore U-joint or other damage. Also before reinstallation check the flange for excessive ware or grooves that would keep it from sealing. Put thread sealant on the splines and threads of the pinon. Then install the pinon flange and drive on until the nut can be started then using a pinon holder of some type tighten the nut until proper rotational torque is achieved. Reinstall the drive line.
@JeffinTD
@JeffinTD 6 месяцев назад
So if I understand correctly this can be done with the carrier and axles in place, by measuring the preload prior and setting back to that after installing a new crush sleeve and new seal?

I have a 2003 Ram 3500 and ordered QT1804 and it wasn't right for my inner bearing race. The QT1804 was 3 13/16 and my bearing was 4 1/16. Are you sure 1804 was the correct race installer? I've since got it corrected and re-ordered QT1834. Not sure why you mention a different race installer in the video. Is there more than one size inner bearing. Excellent Video beyond that. Cant thank you enough.

Never heard anyone call the outer baring race "cups", but I'm not saying it isn't a proper term either. I assumed the "cups" are what the outer bearing races went into? Also, what was the reasoning behind swapping out the tone ring? I couldn't see damage to it?
@TorqueKingTV
@TorqueKingTV 3 месяца назад
Actually, cup and cone is the terminology used by the bearing manufacturing industry for race/bearing.... Quite technical, but it all means the same thing. We removed the tone ring to show the process, but it is not required if in good condition.

If one of the shafts brakes dose the diff stop working
@TorqueKingTV
@TorqueKingTV Год назад
If you had some kind of locking diff it may still work a little bit, however you also have metal shards inside from the broken shaft that will wipe out bearings. An open diff would not allow the truck to move at all.

At 19:10 you say '"using the proper amount of shims, press on the new inner pinion bearing". But you say nothing about how to determine the proper amount of shims. In videos by other shops, a setup bearing is used, Its inner diameter having been honed so that it can be taken on and off by hand. How does your shop determine the proper amount of shims without a setup bearing?
@TorqueKingTV
@TorqueKingTV 6 месяцев назад
If just doing bearing service and replacing with good quality bearings, generally the original shim is to be reused. If changing gear set, use Miller Tools 8887 AAM Axle tool supplement (box 3 I believe) with 6730 Dana Pinion Depth Set + dial indicator. The cheaper method is to buy a spare inner and outer bearing to grind out and that will get you pretty close, but does take a while to do.
