Did you know that there are actually EIGHT validated curl types? Curls among people of the African diaspora range from III-VIII but there is wide variety in which curl patterns dominate depending on the region of origin. This also means that commonly used terms like "4C hair" has many different interpretations. In this video, Dr. Aguh breaks down what it means to have 4C and 4C+ hair and how that may influence your hair goals.

You say that evolutionary the tighter coil pattern is not supposed to grow past the shoulders. I would love to know why you’ve come to this conclusion. By my observation, it seems that Hair can grow as long as it wants, but will always shrink up to its tightest nature to keep the head cool. So it’s actually growing long, but the idea is that it should not pass the shoulder as opposed to your statement that it is not supposed to grow past the shoulders.

I'm grateful for this video because seeing type 4C videos made me a product addict, and I still can't get what they look like. The struggle continues 😞

You're welcome! I am just hopeful people have a greater understanding of 1) the evolutionary benefits of curly hair and 2) that the effort going into maintaining curly hair really varies widely

Thank you for this. I feel seen. I'm black African from Kenya. Literally the cradle of civilization. Other than some weirdness from Arabs long ago in my lineage, I'm not mixed with anything. I'm black on black on black with a very thick and tight curl pattern with very thick hair. I love my hair so much but some tips just don't work for me. Thank you for this

I wish the curl pattern chart had better quality pictures. It’s hard to tell the difference between the curl patterns

Yes my hair is so tight it's completely collapsed and only shows ends no shaft no matter how long it grows. People judge it as unkept and tangled because they are looking at ends. Its so perfect it never tangles and i never comb it, combing make it dry split and tangly. At 12 plus inches it does not fall and succumb to gravity when wet. My afro and braids dont shake or swing. Its will forever be a teeny weeny afro at any length. My hair is not a mixture of length and shrinkage it grows completely pilewise not length wise. Length is an oxymoron yes it thrives short. Stretching it also takes away from its moisture and beauty. My hair is rare on any continent however im american, im an anomaly and my own race doesn't understand my hair they think something is wrong. Being the highest grade of hair its too powerful to be manipulated by products , "Hair care" in any capacity is bad for my hair. Its more about keeping it unified and leaving it alone. Its the royalty of hair grades you will respect it and leave it alone and its not trying to be cultivated to appease people s biracial dreams for it. The math is different it doesn't grow up to the sun or away frow my face it packs in growing down toward the roots. The coils arent stretchy they are spring loaded with so much pressure that you can feel scalp pain as it tries to un leash it self from even a loose braid. Therevis no gel that can lay it down.

Question: How would using a texturizer on type 7 hair be helpful in learning how to manage one’s hair when chemicals tend to cause damage (at least in all of my experiences with all chemicals)?

I have a question. My son whose Black accidentally sprayed household bleach on his hair. He immediately rinsed as much as he could out. Now, the spot does not grow, is there a way I can get it to grow back? It’s a small area but it’s there.
