Why he left Austria to start a farm in Jamaica 

I made lots of comments here but I have to applaud the Jamaican women who are taking up farming while their men is hanging out at the shop plaza! I respect the Jamaican women farmers who plants to feed their children! God bless them all!

As Jamaicans we need to invest in our country. If an Austrian can do it with all his immigration challenges why can't us who are born Jamaicans do the same....even if we are overseas....we see this time and time again hardwork will payoff! Let's invest people - real estate farming, invest invest invest! An Austrian has done it. So can we. Bless up our God Bless Island.

Agriculture is the way to go for Jamaica. A successful and healthy country produces their own food in a healthy way.

How comes we don’t see more stories like this instead of all the corruption and killing that’s happening in our beautiful Island. Anyway none of that is ever going to stop me from going or moving back when l am ready. Crimes happen all over the world. Thanks for featuring this story and since l was born and raised in South East St Elizabeth this makes me proud that he chose my Parish to call his home and to provide job opportunities for people who need jobs.

I hope the Jamaican government is watching this and taking notes. We always have people from different countries coming to Jamaica and invest in Jamaica, and in no time they make it. While I'm happy for their investment in Jamaica, I hope they don't turn on us and start kicking us out of our own little island. Not saying that this is the case with this gentleman. I'm speaking on a general term. They invest in our agriculture they invest in our tourism just to make money, but THEY don't really care about us. Thank God for the few that does. I live in Europe and such opportunities are not given to a foreigner, it is not created for a foreigner to get such opportunities no matter how capable you are. so, please Jamaicans count your blessings and take charge of your Country because Europe doesn't give you power in their country the White man always knows where to go to obtain the power they need, it's not because they care about you or want to help you, because he knows the Jamaican men is hanging out and laid back on the roadside smoking Ganga womanizing with their big guns living large without working for it. Food security is so important. As Martin have stated it needs to be organised correctly. This high Importing is too expensive for Jamaica. Everybody have to eat.

This is about this guy from Austria, who went to Jamaica to work as a hotel manager at the foreign-owned Half Moon hotel, who then decided to become the owner of his own farm in St Elizabeth. After seeing the difficulties that his hotel was undergoing, in terms of getting supplied by local farmers - which caused tons of headache in getting meals prepared on time for the guests - he then decided to set up his own farm to fill the dire need. So, he leased lands from people in the surrounding areas and started his own farm to fill the supply gap. His farm has become a huge success as a result and is now a burgeoning agricultural supply corporation in Jamaica. In the interview, he explained about the hardships of getting it all done, especially due to the fact that he was a foreigner - even though he had then recently married a Jamaican woman. It was not all a ‘piece of cake’ - as they say. For he had to first, battle the customary prejudice that Jamaicans have against seemingly “privileges foreigners who come to take advantage”. Then, he had to learn how to go about leasing properties in the correct legal manner, and then know how to grow the right crops for the most suitable soil, and so on, and so forth. On top of that, he had to make sure that his immigration papers were always in good standing - in terms of his working visa and resident status. Now, after twenty years, he has finally completed his naturalization status and is now a full-fledged Jamaican citizen - along with being a highly successful entrepreneur. It is quite an interesting story. And I wonder if he would qualify as one of the non-hated Whites in Ja. As opposed to Ukrainian Irena. Who, some people hate - I think mainly because she runs a regular yet successful RU-vid channel and is hence more visible to Jamaicans.

I come to Jamaica very often. I am from Clarendon, so my experience from that vantage point, Clarendon, was always a very fruitful and farm oriented parish. In my area, I could not help noticing that bush has replaced what was once quite fruitful. I thought that farming there died with the older generation. I got lost in Alligator Pond, trying to take a coastal route to Black River. En route, I was blown away by the amount of farmlands with acres upon acres of scallions/onions and carrots in St. Elizabeth. This is a very compelling and inspiring story. Farming is one thing that I would definitely do if I return to Jamaica or invest there. As a youth growing up, everyone around us plated something. Almost every kind of fruit and food was in abundance.

As a new developer in the realeste market in St Elizabeth with a gated condo community. I can say he really understand the Jamaican culture and the people. And, Martin was very transparent about farming as well as investment. You hardly ever see others who are doing well in their endeavors offer the level of help he is offering. As one from a little island, who lived from my parents'farming, It was very inspiring listening to the farmer in this video. I really appreciated him elaboration of his background before he became the star farmer in Jamaica. His starting experience was very well laid out as a solid foundation; not only for farming, but also for anyone to accomplish or triumph in anything in life; especially to establish a sound career. To make it in life people, above other values, must be courageous, inspired, disciplined, patient, humble, trustworthy, willing to listen to learn and prepare to battle and to prevail against the unseen forces that come to test everyone sometimes in life. (Like the talk goes, we got to have real backbones!) So, yes! It was marvelous as well as very encouraging to learn of Mr. Martin's successful life story! My mom is a farmer my dad was a farmer I was raised eating organic food I'm drinking organic bush what teas a natural healing remedies for I'm from St Ann's and I believe 100% in forming I know lift in the US but I believe in farming different motivate young people in Jamaica instant instead of standing on the street corner rubbing out their hand especially the young young men men off today take an example from this 4 minutes good.

If you noticed the gentleman said that the first thing you need is to have a market. This gentleman was manager in a hotel so he had influence in the hotel industry hence a place where he could sell his produce. I was born in St Elizabeth and I'm still here in the heart of the farming community and most of the time people produce spoil right in the garden because they have no market. Sometimes a hotel supplier order the produce or tell you to plant a product and never comes back for it. My husband and I returned from the USA to farm and most of the time we just look a our produce rotting in the field and no one to buy it. It's not as easy as this gentleman is saying. He's making money cause the hotels are giving him the preference of buying his products. In Jamaica there's a lot of favouritism and the saying goes like this: "is not who you know, is who know you" Don't watch these interviews and think it's as easy as it sounds

Some years ago I read about this gentleman and how he became a farmer and a top farmer too if I am correct he catches our language so well in a matter of fact he speak like a Jamaican

My brother started farming scotch bonnet peppers, scallion(green onion) and was doing well until inclemenT weather became a great challenge!

Love this interview Throp. It is very helpful for us to see the good things that are happening. I agree with Martin regarding having a young minister of Agriculture, someone with energy to engage and excite young people to get involved in the business of agriculture. The most successful and scalable business are the ones that identify a market need and take steps to fill the gap. That is what he did. Most small business just seek to copy what others are doing.

I'm coming back home and I intend to plant my own food. The other side of this is the GMO seeds that the government has embraced now leaving the farmers in a tail spin. Africa rejected GMO seeds! I'm watching young farmers in Jamaica on youtube struggling with this because, this means they have to buy seeds again and again!

Seems like one of the most overlooked comment from this interview is the "soon come" culture which is prominent among our people. People often make plans with time constraints and when your timing depends on another showing up on time and they pull the "soon come" ting on you, then all timing is off. I say that to say this Martin is successful for 2 simple reasons, he understand the importance of being on time and being consistent.

I’m being honest here and with no bias towards foreign investors, as a matter of fact we need them, but most Jamaicans cannot afford a start up as those immigrating to Jamaica with resources. Then the small farmers gets swallowed up by the larger farmers and they become only suppliers with minimal rom for growth.

It's sad a lot of Jamaicans are blinded to the wealth they're sitting on. Their eye's are fixated on vanity and God bless them with a fruitful and rich soil. Jamaicans need to know that people overseas are paying a high price for Jamaican produces.

Every country has a process for work permit even if you investing. Jamaica shouldn't be any different. Hopefully Jamaica will not become the new south Africa or Zimbabwe where foreigners take over farm land.... Jamaican farmers need to push themselves to do better and grow Thier business...

If you want to eat jamaican food in the UK you have to buy it from ASIANS because the jamaicans are not even savvy selling their own food, they let the Asians go to jamaica and get it for them, then they complain it's too expensive. In Jamaica it's the same they wait for foreigners to come in and spoon feed them with employment doing exactly what they should be doing. The opportunities for jamaicans living inJamaica are endless. The sunshine climate and land to produce so much, you should be making billions from exporting your goods. We were served frozen foreign mixed vegetables...IN JAMAICA! THAT WAS A DISGRACE! buying kidney beans and other things from abroad you can produce better quality is appealing. The young men especially are LAZY social media and fashion crazy wanting the latest everything sitting on their expensive phones all day, eating KFC, having their relatives abroad send money to buy everything they want. Some of those people abroad live in squalid conditions in foreign but too ashamed to tell you foreign is worst than Jamaica. They cant afford the luxury YOU have in Jamaica. Spoiling these lazy young people isn't good they turn to crime instead of work and education. Work pays - you will have more tourist is you have less crime. Jamaica is one of the best islands in the Caribbean, food climate culture. The mentality of this generation is wrecking everything.

Even though this guy had many experience in the hotel businesses. He is fulfilling a simple service where Jamaicans Farmers could not offered. The idea of delivering products on time Jamaicans weren't able to deliver. Good for him

Wow I see more and more foreigners going to Jamaica and involving in farming because they understand the principles of it. Why can’t some people understand that if you plant you will always have food. Some people just plant and do nothing more just reap when the time comes. If you plant just one apple or mango tree and those trees bear fruits you alone cannot eat off the crop of apples and mangoes. You can’t die of hunger if you farm.Smh

As a young Jamaica I love to hear more about agriculture in Jamaica. This is a great industry that I seek to join in the future. Martin is an interesting character that made a wise choice in going into agriculture in Jamaica. I come from an agricultural background and would love to come back to that industry in my older years.
