one comment and a question: "Voodoo" is one of my top 5 albums, right up there with The Beatles' "Rubber Soul," Wilco's "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot," and A Tribe Called Quest's "Midnight Marauders." On “Voodoo” D'Angelo had Questlove on the drums in the studio, with no loops or click track. The production on "Voodoo" is incredible-every track is smooth, funky, and soulful. By the way, do you have perfect pitch? I have to slide my finger along the low E string to find the key and then noodle around for a few minutes to find the chord. Your ability to find that G7 was 😮...
My friend invited this guitar player he knew for a long time to a jam we had in San Diego circa 2010. His name was Nate Mercereau, and at that time he was playing with D'Angelo and Sheila E up in the Bay Area. He was a very good guitar player but what was unbelievable was that people were playing original songs that Nate had never heard and he played the song as though he had heard it many times before, and I'm not talking about traditional progressions...I'm talking about very unique songs that don't follow traditional progressions. It was hard to believe but I was there and he did it to one of my songs.
I am Not a pro But the educated high level pros know Everything about scales chords theory etc. I have worked with Pros who can break a new song down immediately. Yes it is Awesome. Much respect👑🇺🇸. I know a pro who had to substitute guitar to bass for stadium concerts. On the spot. Same day for a World famous star.
@chamham6734 You have great taste in music would you give my first album a go? It's called Separate Checks by me A Keithing. I'd love to hear what you think of it!
Actually reggae drums are a little like this. This is why pure rock guys sometimes find reggae challenging I think. It’s a restraint thing less is more
Michael--this is nothing to do with D'Angelo, but you might want to look at the video called "“More to This” From the Stairwell - Acoustic Performance." On the YT channel of Marc Scibilia. From what I've seen on your channel, you might like his music.
I know one of the guitar players who has played in this band in the past, don't think he's in this video, but the guy makes you sick with how good he is.
The trick to D’Angelo is to realize it’s just sorcery. Easier on the brain. I fought with “The Root” for weeks, before figuring out it was JUST a pentatonic lick. Made me so mad that I just chose to listen and leave it alone. Deceptively simple turns into aggravatingly complex. Just learn a Blink 182 song and call it a day.
@@gmcsrbosavl6964 The problem with modern soul and R&B is the conscious decision to remove the gospel influence from the music because they consider it too old fashioned. My wedding band comment is valid because I'm the wedding business here in NYC. I'm an events bartender. I've been watching and listening to wedding bands since the mid 1980's. Donny Hathaway (and his band) had more talent in his little finger than this jerk-off. And only a jerk-off chooses to title his album 'Black Messiah' with the front cover showing off his six-pack. Listen to the Average White Band. Listen to Hi Rhythm Section from Memphis. For more modern soul and R&B, these guys don't hold a candle to what The Dap-Kings do. Check out the players Mark Ronson chooses to work with.
