Ideas for weapon types has been a niche food for thought discussion topic within the Genshin community for some time, so I thought it would be fun to discuss whether or not it would actually benefit the game to get more of them!

A bit off-topic, but it surprises me that traveler doesn't get different weapons for each element, considering that you still have to level it up from talent level 1.
@ChenAnPin

Because the Traveler having a sword is kind of the most basic weapon as you can get for an MC. But it is kind of annoying how with every element the Traveler acquires they for some reason have to level up their Basic Attack talent every time from 0 (it would be understandable if they somehow learned a different attack style, but other than a passive talent from Anemo and Geo that deals elemental damage on the last hit of a combo attack, there's really not much difference)

catalyst unironically has the most potential in my opinion as a weapon. it started with heizou then baizhu's release showing that not all catalyst users have to go bang bang bang from far away and instead can go bang bang bang up close. it'll be unique if we get a character who conjures some kind of elemental weapon but is a catalyst user.
@ChenAnPin

As a fun middleground, I think they could diversify the current weapons visually. - Bow weapons could get crossbows / canons - Sword weapons could get daggers - Polearm weapons could get scythes - Catylist weapons could get (magic) gauntlets - Claymore weapons could get battle axes They virtually work the same, but some new eye candy to the repetitive current weapons. The only downside is, depending on how different the weapon is from the current equipable weapon, they might need to add new animations.
@PigeonSuWi

I personally love Catalysts cause they focus more on effects and have unique attack animations like with heizou and scumidouch so it’s very likely that “gun” characters from Fontaine and other nations will fall under this category, right now they should cover elements for each weapon then weapon with each main stat, for example Furina is expected to be the first Hydro Claymore as well second HP% mained claymore it may not be very good weapon for many but that could change with time.

Gun. Give me Gunshin Impact. We know Fontaine has firearms, and the Fatui to an extent, so give us proper early firearms. It would also balance out the melee-ranged imbalance we have right now (which is not exactly a bad thing to have but I personally would prefer this and I have no other backing) And heavy ranged, making them the claymore of ranged, would be neat. Long range, perhaps a reload to it that you have to manage, but very good single shot damage. Skills used to enhance the shot, mitigate the reload, set a trap, use as a "get off me" tool, something to group up enemies in ways that Anemo doesn't already, making Anemo less mandatory for horde situations... The list goes on.

I love the idea of guns and you came up with a cool way to make it not feel the same as bow characters. Though i can see 1 problem. They would be a 1 hit wonder unless you make like a universal “gun” type that facilitates snipers, assault rifles and such. If we just use your example they will either be physical damage (and we know how meta that is) or most reactions will just simply be unviable such as transformative reaction, Freeze bc shatter exists and the quicken reaction since that relies on multiple smaller hits to be viable. So only vape and melt would be able to amplify its damage effectively since that enchances big numbers more if the attacks are infused. (maybe overload since it is a ranged attack) But they could add a general gun weapon with different sub categories like catalyst has right now with heizou being punch, Ningguang having blunt attacks, Yea having AoE and Sucrose charged having knockback to name a few examples. Like make it one of their ascension passives or a separate new passive. Examples: “Each hit is an heavy attack” “After shooting a bullet, quickly fire 2 extra bullets” Or skills/passive that allow you to go machine gun and go into a bow like aiming mode and just spray bullets like there is no tomorrow. (If done via passive the skill could infuse the weapon with elemental damage)

Flails would be what bypasses shields, not scythes. That said, we don't need a weapon or weapon type to deal with the shield issue. Elemental shields, like the ones mages have, are a fundamental issue hampering physical damage from being viable (and failure to help in this regard, especially with pathetic elemental application, is part of why Mika is near worthless as a physical support), and the solution to that needs to apply to all physical weapons, not a particular weapon or weapon type.

While I am all for encouraging diverse team building genshin's nature poses 2 major problems: -You kinda need to invest in a unit to use it. A lv1 and a lv90 claymore unit may brake geo shields at the same speed but bringing a lv1 unit out at world level 5 is generaly considered a bad idea. Witch woudn't be much of a problem if all ressources needed to do so weren't limited or time-gated. - You can't enforce to much diversity outside of the 8 starter characters. I'd honestly like a Scythe weapon type, as they're probably my favourite FICTIONAL weapon (in irl, it's not even a good weapon, but there's the war scythe, which is just a stick with a curved blade at the tip), which focuses moreso on sweeping (having high area coverage) and pulling (grouping cc). It will also have mid range, with average atk spd. Another weapon is a Lance, which focuses on piercing and charging. It's basically the claymore ver of Polearms (even though that should be the hammer, but the hammer is already too similar to the claymores), which specialises in strong piercing attacks and a charged atk that makes them charge forward continuously consuming stamina, which can be controlled by the movement wheel, but has worse turn speed, but faster movement speed.

One slight issue with enforcing (which I agree should be done much more) that we use a larger variety of characters is that most players have 5 high level characters and 20 low level characters, and it would take a while (with the current system) to farm enough to catch up, basically making your theorethical Dehya boss unbeatable for most.

@Nowaylarry
@Nowaylarry Год назад
@@mortem4573 The latter part of that is really only an issue for Inazuma characters (and Shenhe) and even then they will only be one ascension behind (if you get them on rate up). That is also early enough in the game that character level hardly matters. Until AR35-40 pretty much all of your damage is coming from your weapon, feather and reactions. It would also be easy to bridge that gap by adding a boss drop changing item to the game (similar to what dream solvent does) and adding a shop that sells limited quantities of regional specialties from every nation. I suspect that much like Sumeru, Fontaine and subsequent nations will be accessible from basically the start of the game with just archon quests and some world quests locked by AR and story progression. You can walk to Sumeru at AR10 and fight any of the bosses (aside from weekly bosses).

To be honest i love the idea of making an incentive to play certain units but i do think there would be a problem. At this point in time any attempts hoyo has made to incentivize playing a certain element/weapon made the community furious (look at the golden wolflord who *can* be defeated without using geo, but it is faster if you do. Or the flying enemies where you would want a bow user to stun them and bring them down.) So i think that while i love the idea of making enemies one shot unless you use a gauntlet character to do 100 hits, i think the community would mass hate it so much. I think the existing categories are broad enough that all weapons are pretty much covered. Any new additions would either be too similar to an already existing type to be a separate type, have mechanics that make them worse than the already existing options, or have mechanics that power creep already existing options. For example, a lot of people want to see Scythes in Genshin… but that is basically a Polearm with a little extra area coverage. I personally think shields would be a cool addition, but I fully recognize that no one would like it because blocking would be a DPS loss and therefore unusable in abyss.
@PigeonSuWi

I think an interesting addition would be something like a chakram that you throw at enemies and it bounces between them. A ranged weapon that is good in AOE but bad in single target, kind of the opposite to bow. It would bounce from one enemy to another but it can't bounce back to an enemy that already got hit. The more enemies there are, the more total damage you will deal to them.
@BNuts
@BNuts Год назад
Interesting take on AI-chan's chakram play. Overall most characters in _HI3_ use their chakram very differently. Pretty interesting to see. Pardo and Susannah are both melee, AI throws and slashes, and Aponia... just kinda hovers menacingly and casts.
@PigeonSuWi
@PigeonSuWi Год назад
@@BNuts Yeah I kinda thought about AI-chan's chakram, but in Genshin that will be the baseline of the weapon. You throw it and it hits all enemies in range, but doesn't hit the same enemy twice, so the more enemies there are the better the weapon is, the exact opposite of bow. From here Hoyo can get as creative as they want, supports, summons, on/off field, infusions, switch to melee like Childe, etc.. I think this will be a really good addition! Also Genshin actually has an enemy that is VERY similar to AI-chan, the dendro eremite.

Guns definitly, they fill the ranged weapons middle ground of damage and reach (the "sword" of ranged weapons with catalyst/claymore and bow/spear) and maybe a chain weapon that works like a bridge between ranged & melee weapons. every thing else feels a little redundant for gameplay (fists are just catalyst since heizou and axes, daggers & hammers are too close to sword & claymore in moveset & utility) but maybe as skins for the already existing weapon types would be great!

Honestly, I think functionally the "weapon types" are something like melee (sword, claymore, polearm), ranged (bow, catalyst), and aimed shot (Ganyu etc). Like sure there are differences between each one - claymores can hack geo shields, catalysts are always infused - but they're niche and well within the differences in the actual weapon types (catalysts vary wildly in range for example), and normal attacking is such a negligible part of so many teams and characters that at the end of the day, Beidou could be a polearm and Xingqiu could use a claymore it nothing would really change. This leads me to conclude that the five weapon types are a gacha tactic just as much as they are intended for gameplay variety. And I think the complexity level of these weapon types in the game as is is fine. I don't wanna have to collect a new set of weapons if they introduce pistols or gauntlets or whatever, especially if they're just gonna be completely irrelevant for most characters whose core gameplay come from a Skill and Burst that don't care what weapon type they have. I think it's perfectly fine for the different weapon types to be more cosmetic, and in that vein instead of introducing new weapon types, they should just keep introducing new creative animations like they've been doing, like with Dehya and Heizou's punching, Kaveh's briefcase, Kirara's claws, and Mika's three different weapons (for crying out loud it's a polearm user with a crossbow, that's cool).
@mrdata9823
@mrdata9823 Год назад
There is another way to aproach new weapons, In another gacha game I play called guardian tales you have what we call "alternative weapon", each character have their signature weapon just like in genshin but then they added to some characters another weapon which changes their class, for example Oghma is a dark tank that gives defense to his team and is basically the tankiest tank in the game (he is a mecha by the way) and then they gave him a second form to his mecha saber which is a mecha rifle which turns him into one of the highest dps in the whole game vs bosses (where you would never use him as a tank because you want damage for this content). A cool feature if you ask me and you don't need a new unit, just give him his second weapon and he turns into dps, or give him his old weapon and he is tank, both have the stats you left him with so if he is maxed then both forms are maxed. Pretty cool stuff if you ask me!

About incentive to use certain characters. This could be done for everything, but open world already is really easy and you can do whatever you want. Events make an effort and that's fine. But the main constant content we have in Genshin that requires you to use good teams and builds is the Abyss. For this you could go about it in a few ways but I thought that it'd be nice if every abyss cycle they'd buff certain characters or teams. This could be damage, certain stats, maybe even constellations? The worst characters could just get full on C6 if they feel crazy about it. Maybe they give you extra rewards for beating floors with a certain character/team. Maybe characters that are extremely good at dealing with certain floors can even be nerfed a little? Controversial takes but I think it'd be best to stick to one specific way of implementing this. I'm leaning more towards a buff to a certain character each cycle. This could even provide time for others to grind out a character they never used before just because they'd help with the current abyss, then they could also use that character for future abyss or just whatever. Nerfing characters in the abyss is the most controversial thing I listed, but it might just be the healthiest option for the game long term. Certainly something to not just ignore because "I got the character, I should not be punished for using them" and maybe it's time to use your Barbara that's been with you through the hardest of battles and now been benched ever since Kokomi got released with her artifact set.

About the only archetype I can see having value is adding Firearms to function as a ranged, physical, aim-shot option that does blunt damage. A ranged blunt option currently only exists in Klee and Ningguang, so a physical version would work. Similarly, different guns would operate off the individual characters' NA animations, either letting them do fast light attacks, or a string of light attacks followed by a blunt attack, or AOE scattershot attacks, etc. The weapons themselves would still function as a stat stick like everything else, but the individual characters with the weapon type could add a ton of variety

Adding a new weapon type means they have to create characters specifically for that weapon and that defeats the purpose of having new ones because they can use their skill and burst to simulate that particular weapon type or just simply have them as an animation during their attacks, also, they can just use a catalyst instead and pull a heizou again... I'd rather have more weapon options, it has been 3 years with the exact same pool of weapons and if they add a new one it's limited to a banner, sure we get new ones from the blacksmith with any new region, but that's not enough.

I don’t think new weapon types are necessary when HoYoverse has proven they can make creative animations for already existing weapons such as Heizou with fisticuffs, Mika with crossbow, Kirara using her claws, and Kaveh with Mehrak. They simply need to double down on this. If you want more examples, Honkai Impact literally doesn’t give a shit about weapon types. Kiana Kaslana has multiple different battlesuits but they all use one weapon type: Pistol. Despite Herrscher of the Void using spikes and black holes. Despite Herrscher of Flamscion literally using a great sword, they are still considered a Pistol user. Another example is the Herrscher of Sentience who is a Gauntlet user but uses 4 different weapon types.

I think if Genshin was going to diversify the weapons, they'd still fall under the respective weapon categories they could already fit into. Follow with me here... Let's say a new character is added who's signature weapon is a Big Battle Axe. By default, that Battle Axe would fall under the heaviest weapon category, Claymore. Perhaps, the characters animations fit /well/ with the new signature weapon, but they can use the Sword/Club weapons just fine and vice versa (ie Diluc uses his normal animations using the signature Battle Axe for the hypothetical character). It'd be a simple change and also emphasize character collection, as players would definitely want a character with awesome new animations. You could also retroactively add new designs/weapons for the 4 star category fitting the Battle Axe idea, yet still fall under "Claymore" That being the case, here's a layout of some weapons that may fit wherever on our chart... Sword - Small Clubs, Maces, Small Hand Sickles Polearm - Halberd Sickles/Scythes, Halberds, Bo Staves (Monk Character) Claymore - Battle Axes, More Large Clubs Catalyst - Guns (Think Honkai 3rd's protag first Battle suit), Gauntlets, Cannons, literally anything Bows - (can't think of any sadge)

Thats why I really like Nilou's kit. it would be nice to see an event where as you have to build a team for the domain floor but are restricted on that floor by not being able to use 1 type of weapon class and 1 elemental class. Assume dendro and polearm are locked for that challenge, that takes out all dendro teams but also prevents you from using Hu Tao, Zhongli, Raiden and Xiangling. This is content I personally want to see, yes it will be easier for spenders and long time players who have more characters, but it makes team building more fun. At least for me.

I also like Nilou's kit but I think it would have been far better to make the restrictions for her passive a sliding scale. For example, with one character in the party that isn't hydro or dendro you lose half of the bloom damage bonus Nilou provides but you still get the instant detonations. With only one hydro and one dendro character in the team you lose the instant detonations but still get 50% of Nilou's bloom damage bonus. This would still encourage running her with just hydro/dendro but would also allow her to be more than just dead weight in situations where you really want a grouper or don't many hydro/dendro units that work well with her.

The best example I can give for my thought process is that when a new character comes out you usually have a bunch of generalist weapons to choose from if you don't have the best in slot but if we get a new weapon that new character will be underpowered for a while since you don't have those generalist weapons to use, that's also ignoring that their might not even be the stable generalist weapons like favonius or sacrificial since game lore does come into play as seen with no sacrificial polearm so they could be weaker overall

Modules being essentialy an extra upgrade u can make after ur character is at "max ascention" level.

For weapon design it doesn't have to be a chain connecting the sword/dagger. The chain could be a string of energy beam, or a rope, or small springs. The chain maybe attached to a dagger, hook, maybe a weighted bell or sickle, small anchor. Even a grappling hook. Players can enter 3rd person ADS like Bows to launch the dagger side to slightly drag lightweight monsters forward the players or propel themselves towards heavier monsters. As for exploration purposes in a new region. Players can aim the hook shot of the weapon as a grappling hook to transverse to new areas and solve puzzles... but that'll never happen.

if it were up to me I’d make some kind of “heavy polearm” weapon (consists of scythes, cartoonishly large hammers, battle-axes and perhaps the odd stuff like shovels too). Their charged attacks would create a large area of damage and use up a lot of stamina to cast, if they currently have an elemental infusion then the area covered by the charged attack will be increased and will also do more damage, and increased even further if the infused type matches the character’s element. However this will take away the ability to do elementally infused normal, charged and plunging attacks for a few seconds, this downtime could be decreased with elemental mastery (or something similar). The same effects apply to plunging attacks too.

I think that another solution could be to make a character have their own personal weapon, then lightly connect it to 1 of the existing weapons. For example if you use a gun then the weapon type would be bow. This allows for more creative freedom in creating characters who aren’t restricted to the weapon type. You can then give their basic attack special properties conducive of the characters personal weapon while not showing the character using or summoning the existing weapon. For example a character uses a gun but are categorized as a bow unit, their basic attack uses the gun and has faster projectile speed on account to it being a gun. You can then create a banner weapon that when equipped changers the look of the personal weapon so that it is distinguished from the original weapon. This comes with the down side that other characters equipping this weapon would need to have the look of the basic weapon. Or we could eliminate that by have a cosmetic system like being able to equip a BIS weapon but changing the look to another weapon.

They can also make clubs, daggers from the sword billets, big shields or long chains with iron balls from claymore billets, poleaxe or wands from the spear billets, sniper or dart from bow billets.. and so on these are just examples. and these changes should not be only for premium weapons, it can be provided through four star weapons too, it will add different experience without breaking the game 3 years system.

I think Hoyo needs to simplify their weapon system a bit but maybe allow different animation and skin types depending on the cahracters in use. So like rather than swords allow the category to be one handed. So a future character could be a one handed axe user and just change the favanious sword into an axe with the same aesthetic? •One Handed •Two Handed Heavy Melee •Ranged Physical •Magical/catalyst(Ranged or melee) •Marshal Two Handed melee(polearm, bo-staff/quarterstaff, halberds)

Did you see the gun weapon type they previewed in the Fontaine teaser?? It’s long overdue. I believe guns will eventually be added as the world development progresses in genshin. Who knows perhaps Dainsleif power is nuclear

Catalysts are just kind of their everything goes category and on one hand I'm excited to see what they do with that, but on the other hand I'm worried that might lead to them oversaturating the character pool with catalysts in the future as it gets harder to differentiate characters of the same weapon type. I think it'd be interesting to have characters use like daggers and to have them be officially sword characters but they use like a slightly different model, like an adjusted model for the sword they use or like a bow character that uses a gun and the gun changes to resemble the bow they used, a polearm user with a scythe that does that. Because you can't just add a scythe polearm or dagger sword or gun bow because then they'd have to make special animations for every character of that weapon type if they were to wield it, and while yes this way is also a lot of work, I think in the long run it could potentially be less work

to be honest, I don't think they need to add new weapons to the game to get these new weapon types, it would probably be far more complex than I think, but making it so that a character simply has a sword scaled down as a dagger, or using a bow as the limbs of a crossbow, or even adding a blade to a spear to make a sythe. Of course things like making textures and position adjustments for each weapon as well as making it so that asymetrical bows wouldn't look rediculus would be difficult, but it would be a possibility

I'll never understand why so many people hated Minecraft's 1.9, feel like the old combat was pretty lackluster compared to the new system

Well, adding new weapon types would be interesting, however I don't think this is possible at this point. Although, as displayed by Heizou, Mihoyo pretty much can do anything with the existing weapons, reducing catalyst stamina consumption included. Moreover, I think both bows and catalysts are actually two types each: 1) Catalysts who target enemies by launching homing projectiles like Ning Guang or Yan Fei; 2) Catalysts who hot instantly at certain range like Barbara or Sucrose. Same with the bows: 1) Bow users who primarily use regular attacks (infused or not), like Fischl or Yoimiya; 2) Bow users who use charged attacks, like Gun Yuu or Tighnari.

The best way to implement new weapon types is adding similar mechanics to Childe "E" (He uses two daggers). An example of a new would be when a character press "E" the character would start using a gun, scythe or something. Gauntlets are already in the game if you count Heizou and the upcoming Jojo character.

They could probably make old characters able to use new weapon types as alternative: e.g.: Miko can wield Catalysts or "Wands" Heizou can wield Catalyst or Gauntlets Kuki can use swords or daggers Rosaria can use Polearms or Scythes and so on

I'd like a weapon that you charge at enemies with. It can be skinned as a tower shield (Mitachurl) or oversized lance (Fire main character in Honkai Star Rail or Durandal from Honkai Impact 3rd). The tap attack would be a quick poke/bash, while charged attack is well... charging forward dealing damage to whatever you crash into. Basically it would be like Kirara's or Sayu's hold skills but slower move speed, counts as blunt damage, consumes stamina, and uses the normal attack or sprint instead of elemental skill.

Yes, we do need new weapons. Preferably a scythe, a warhammer, a bigass axe, maybe some kunai and it would be fun if we got to beat hilichurls up with nunchucks too. The spiky variant.
