The people have begun to return from exile. The old ways have been re-established. But there’s still a sense that God has not fully returned. The people, especially the priests, have become careless in their worship, simply going through the motions. Malachi addresses this problem by reminding them that even among the idolatrous nations there are many who reach out to God out of their own human desire, and put Israel to shame.
Q: What do you do when faith feels like going through the motions?

Yes! As we share the gospel with Muslims, we see how God has been working in their lives and calling them even before they met us and heard of Christ's saving truth. In fact, many seem to know that God is better than the way he is presented in the Quran. This sense helps many open their hearts to him. Dear Christian friends, please pray for those Muslims who have not yet opened their hearts. Consider sharing the gospel with them.

It truly is inspiring to hear of the power of God to seek and save even before truth of Christ's salvation is known. Thank you for your work in the Lord and for your heart that loves the lost like Jesus. --N.T. Wright Online Team

God is reverenced among the nations. A good reminder to not just go through the motions but worship with our hearts.

This teaching reminds us that what we do matters to God. Worshiping with our hearts, attending with our minds, listening with every spiritual "antenna" at the ready - all of that is important to God. You ask what do we do when faith feels like just going through the motions? This is always something that I personally, have to be aware of, and it seems that as I age this is even more of a "problem". Since the pandemic my worship life, my prayer time and my time in contemplation have changed a good bit. I am more connected virtually to members of the body of Christ who live far away from me. This has shaken me into a new awareness of what I am doing and much of the old complacency is no longer there. I think when I am just drifting along it has always helped me to change things up a bit. Read a new book, go to a different worship service, read a new version of scripture .... today all of that is even more possible with on-line worship, study and prayer. Thanks for all you do to add to my personal life with God!

Love the idea and imagery of spiritual 'antennae', Autumn. It is wonderful to have so many different ways to engage that stimulates conscious contact with him--whether that's during study time, in prayer, or giving praise and making a joyful noise!

"Those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength" Maybe the moment we stop seeking God - when we believe we have finally found Him, have at last come into His presence - is a moment when those seeds of complacency are sowed. When we no longer feel the need to seek Him then our yearning is no more and when that goes we lose something vital.

Yes, sometimes a loss of connection can occur as we cease to ask, seek, or, knock.

Did he answer the question, Does God need our praise? I think I missed it.

Title of this reflection seems a bit off, better title might have been “God deserves our best worship” 😉

This brings up two questions for me. First, I know that the faithful Israelites who returned after their long exile mourned that second Temple was not nearly as glorious as was Solomon's Temple but did I miss that God did not actually return? Were the returning Israelites worshipping in the hope that God would return and THAT is the context for Jesus' time on earth? Second, it does seem as though the Jewish people held nations corporately as idolators but does the New Testament show that salvation can happen more often than they thought at the individual level? Thanks.

There was no indication that Ezekiel's vision of God's presence abandoning the Temple had been reversed, or that the 'glory of God' had returned. Thus, they are worshipping and carrying on the Temple work in hope of God's return to dwell with his people. Most Israelites regarding 'salvation' as a national hope and less of an individual hope. Of course, generally, their collective thought would have dismissed that Gentiles would be included. But, all this changed when the Spirit was poured out on Jews and Gentiles alike as reported in the book of Acts.

Mr Wright, are we not all descendants of Adam, whether we are Jews or not? Don't we all have a body and a spirit made in the image and likeness of God? Don't we know consciously and unconsciously that there is someone who connects with our spirit?

We are, of course, all descendants of Adam. Humanity is made in the image and likeness of God, however this is a marred image due to sin and rebellion. Thus, there is a need for God to act on our behalf to make things right, as humans often err in seeking to connect with him.

@@NTWrightOnline It is not enough to believe in the existence of God, the demons also believe in the existence of only one God and tremble in terror. And those who claim to be enlightened guides are the first to fail. Life is not just getting up on a pulpit to give morality lessons to others, or to record videos spouting gibberish. Nor pretend to emulate a life as if you wanted to live in other eras that have nothing to do with the 21st century.
