Home Depot sells some nice high flow fittings in a kit. For high flow fittings to benefit your tools you have to replace all of them all the way to your compressor. They make a huge difference in the power of your tools.

I just got Milton connectors , some OEM Hi flow and some Flexzilla hi flow . The inner diameter of the OEMtools and the Milton were 0.259" , the Flexzilla inner diameter was 0.291" . Visibly larger, which prompted me to get out the calipers and measure it. I'm running 1/2" Flexzilla hose with 3/8 ends and Flexzilla High Output connectors on the ends . I run this for my auto air tools ...I run standard connectors for everything else, nail guns, staplers, brad guns with no prob .

When it comes to specifically moving air, or volume (CFM) dont forget that cfm is decided by the smallest size restriction in the air line system. So along with high flow quick connect fittings you also need a matching air line/hose. A 3/8" air hose works well with the Milton high flow fittings but BE SURE the end fittings on the hose are also high flow. Many are not, and have an inside diameter of 1/4". This is particularly important in the performance of a media blasting cabinet and an HVLP paint spraying gun, where both perform best using high volume.

So you guys ever look on your compressor and notice that the pneumatic tubing running between the tank, pressure switch and regulator? Mine happens to be 3/8 O.D. which translates to 1/4 I.D. So whatever that tubing is will determine what the largest size hose/couplers that it would make sense to upgrade to.

@@PeterB12345 Not really, because you may have decent pressure and flow AT the compressor, but horrendous friction(viscosity) losses down 100' of hose and connectors. Dynamic flow rates tend to drop dramatically.

@@mattfinleylive Thanks for clarifiing! So that suggests the further away from the compressor you get the larger the fittings and tubes/hoses you would want to use?

I like the flow of the v style but the couplers did not hold up and began to leak and stick. I have moved to Prevost S1 couplers. They are compatible with the V style plugs Prevost guarantees them for 3 years if you buy their plugs also which my distributor carries and will warranty. I have also used the Coilhose universal which works with the v style plugs.

Excellent video and thanks for posting. My concern about using the high flow fittings is that unless ALL the fittings in the system - from compressor to the tool - have an equally as large (or larger) unrestrictive hole for the air to flow through, there will be minimal or no added CFM through the system. Upgrading to High Flow fittings may not be enough. I'm looking for a hose reel and am concerned that the air passages in the rotating swivel fitting will be restrictive and limit the CFMs through into the 3/8 hose on the reel - and downstream . I asked the question directly to Milton about the diameter of the air passage hole(s) in the rotating fitting they use and how it compares to their purple V-series High Flow Pro fittings. They did not answer my question. I saw your excellent review video of their 3/8 x 50 foot hose reel and was considering it, but I'm holding off. I suspect that regulators, ball valves, swivel fittings, hose barbs, couplers and plugs are all potential log jams in the air train. Of course, the length of the run and all the twists and bends adds resistance to the air flow. It would be interesting to dissect a typical system and look at the actual flow diameters of the various components to reveal the hidden restrictions. I'll subscribe to your excellent channel.

Wondering the same thing but I'm not an engineer and can only guess. If your garden hose has three kinks in it, is it any worse than having just one kink? Not sure actually. They do sell high flow swivel fittings but they don't seem common. Flexzilla makes one, not sure whether Milton does. I figured there was no harm in swapping out to V style at the source, from the compressor into the hose. I'm less sure whether I want to change from "M" style to "V" at the hose output. The "V" couplers are supposed to accept industrial or automotive style but some say that even though they fit, it's not a perfect fit and there's some leakage if there's any side pressure on the connection.

Thanks for the video. I'm currently shopping to graduate from my little pancake comp to a grownup compressor and came across these. Exactly the info I was looking for. One question: I'm probably going to get a Rolair VT25BIG which claims to have 2 x 1/4" quick connects (which I'll be connecting to a 3/8" x 50' hose on reel). Will these cancel out any benefits the NPT V's would give me? The connects are Rolair parts (VT447013).

Once you get your compressor the first thing you want to do is switch out the connections at the compressor. If you chose to leave the factory connections on the compressor that would be your bottleneck and defeat the purpose of the Highflow connections. The restrictive couplers will simply screw off and can be replaced by the Milton V female connections.
@crossfiregaming9541
@crossfiregaming9541 6 лет назад
The Milton V female connections are high flow couplers? Or are you saying that you just put one of those on the compressor and then attach the restrictive stock compressor coupler?
@AWonderfullLife

What size hoses do you use? Specifically, what size is your flexila hose. I've been told the hose diameter also affects the airflow. You agree?
@FlashPerformance
@FlashPerformance 5 лет назад
Yes the hose size will affect your volume also. I run a 3/8 air hose with 1/4 fittings. The Hose is not usually the restriction, however if you are trying to run a 1 inch impact you will need a larger hose. All of the tools I run use a 1/4 in fitting, so the 3/8 hose does all I need.
@Thomasjcolbert82

So, what about Hi-Flo vs 3/8? It’s ever so bigger. 7.62MM VS 7.89. Is that enough of a difference to warrant the changeover? I already bought them but did not realize how little difference there is.
@FlashPerformance
@FlashPerformance 6 лет назад
Anytime you can remove restriction from the air flow you are going to be better off. If you are running a 3/8 hose and fittings you are already ahead of the flow a 1/4 house can do. If you have to run an adapter on your 1/4 hose to run the 3/8 connector that doesn't make any sense. it makes the connections to bulky

Can your 15 gallon tank do the same as your 60 gallon tank using the hi flow fittings since the 15 gallon tank has a 1/4 inch outlet welded to the tank ? Fill a tire with the 15 gallon timed and one off the 60 gallon tank timed .
@FlashPerformance
@FlashPerformance 2 года назад
15 vs 60 will provide the same amount of flow, but that is not the big picture when talking about air, it is also about capacity, I use a lot of 100% duty cycle tools like an air grinder, or impact that require both flow and volume.
@MaineWolverine
@MaineWolverine 6 лет назад
Another thing, all 3/8" air hose stock fittings are not the same I.D., some are larger and some are smaller and these measurements are never given online when you're buying a hose. I just returned a 3/8" flex type hose to Amazon because my 10 year old Goodyear 3/8" hose had fittings with a larger I.D.

I have 1/4" 100' hoses and twin tank 4gal compressor. I find it that when in framing with my framing gun it leaves the nails proud. Do i change the hose to 3/8 or do i just change the fittings as well.
@FlashPerformance
@FlashPerformance 5 лет назад
Nail guns use very little volume so changing the fitting size will not help you issue. You have a pressure issue. See if you can up your air pressure, that will help set the nails deeper.
@kevinmazzarini2200

I'm trying to buy a 3/8 hose. Now my question is, most of the 3/8 hoses I see come with 1/4 NPT ends. Does that mean the hole is 1/4 or is that just for the threads? Or am I supposed to take those off and put 3/8 fittings? I'm a little confused.
@FlashPerformance
@FlashPerformance 3 года назад
The specs are for inside Diameter, a 1/4 hose can have a 1/4 fitting, a 3/8 hose can have a 1/4 fitting our a 3/8 fitting. A half inch hose can have a 1/2 fitting or 3/8 fitting. I don't recommend taking off and replacing crimped hose ends.
@jettguerrero1737
@jettguerrero1737 3 года назад
@@FlashPerformance thanks for responding. So to achieve high flow with a 3/8 hose, I should buy a 3/8 hose with 3/8 end fittings? Or will having a 3/8 hose with 1/4 end fittings (most common I see for sale) with a 3/8 coupler work the same way and achieve high flow as well?

You will want to replace all connectors in the system. If you have a low flow fitting at the compressor that will be a restriction for the whole system.
@JosephPonikvar

I'm buying this to give small Ridgid 6 gallon compressor more capability so I can power bigger tools like an impact wrench. If a standard fitting is rated at 40 scfm and a high flow fitting is ratted at 76 scfm, wouldn't it not make a difference because my compressor is only putting out 2.6 @ 90, or would the overall less resistance give me more scfms?
@FlashPerformance
@FlashPerformance 6 лет назад
The CFM your compressor is producing is while running. With the high flow fittings you will be able to move more air to make your impact hit harder when the tank is full up to pressure. The CFM raiting is something to consider more when you are using a 100% duty cycle tool like a cut off wheel or blow gun.

Which do you get more performance out of, running 3/8" high flow fittings with a 3/8" hose or 1/2" hose?
@FlashPerformance
@FlashPerformance 6 лет назад
Performance is all dependent on what you are doing with the air. In your question the if you went to a 1/2 house the fitting would be your restriction. In that case you would not see any performance increase from changing from a 3/8 hose to a 1/2 hose. I hardly ever use my 1/2 hose, it is only for when I sand blast or run my 1 inch impact. All other times I am using a 3/8 hose with high flow fittings
@gilwilliams9036
@gilwilliams9036 3 года назад
But if you look inside the fittings on the air hose that you screw the female fitting to they are just as small as the stuff your replacing. So you might as well chop those off and get some hose clamps and put high flow fittings in the hose ends to. That's what I'm doing
@Sny734
@Sny734 2 года назад
You're right. A 1/2" garden hose 2ft long in 50ft of 3/4" hose will slow the flow. 50ft of 1/2" and 2ft of 3/4" will flow slower still. Length and size. Anywhere you can reduce restriction increases flow. A screw driver on the pressure switch will do the same thing quicker, just don't exceed any part of the systems safe working pressure. If you're using 50 ft of hose, increase the size to 1/2" and add a 5 or 10ft 3/8" whip to the end for ease of maneuverability and you'll see a big difference in performance of air tools.

Reducing restrictions anywhere increases air flow. Every restriction ads up. Easiest way is to crank up the air pressure not to exceed any part of the systems safe working limit. I know these people own a truck salvage (junk) yard. I watched him take off a pinion U joint yolk 2 1/2" socket with a 1/2" automotive air gun. I said how much pressure are you running he said 160 PSI I said you know you're only supposed to run 90 PSI on air tools. He said this gets the job done, when it breaks I'll get a new one. The big truck leaf spring and suspension repair shop I went to can repair a wore out suspension while you wait. You out to hear those air guns going all day. They buy air guns 20 at a time kept in the tool room. Penny saved is a dollar lost.
