*_As a 17 and 18 year old kid, I really looked up to Seagal! When I saw the movie trailers for Above The Law, I was Completely Awe Struck! I was in Northwest Montana at the time! We then moved to Seattle, WA in June, 1988! I searched movie listings everywhere for any theatre that hopefully was still showing Above the Law! I finally found a multiplex theatre up north in the Lynnwood, WA area still showing it! I took busses for 3 hours to trek up there from Seattle just so's I could see this movie! I was Absolutely Mesmerized! I knew I not only wanted to take Martial Arts, I wanted to do what Seagal does! I wanted to learn Aikido! I was such a fan of Seagal's that I used to dress like him and kind of quasi imitate him! I found an Aikido Dojo in my area and enrolled! I took it all the way to Green Belt level and then started to inwardly question what I was actually learning. I thought to myself: "This isn't like what I see Seagal doing in his movies!" That's because I found out its not what Seagal does in his movies! That Really Cool, Ballistic, Combat Looking, Real Looking stuff isn't Aikido, it's the old school Aiki-Jujutsu! What I was learning was the Morihei Ueshiba, very Zen, very Flowery, dance in a hakama type of stuff! I eventually left Aikido and got into other Arts that would better arm a young Man for a real fight! I got into Kenpo, and then gradually started cross training with Filipino Martial Arts, Silat, and Wing Chun guys!_* *_Anyway, I digress. The thing is, I loved Seagal and his movies and thought: "This is how I want to be! I want to be like this guy!" And then, I just gradually began losing respect for him as stories of how he really was in real life started to slowly come to light. Including attempted rape stories. I remember hearing about him hurting stuntmen on movie sets. I remember hearing about him hurting other actors because of bruised egos, etc, etc, etc. Then the chronic pathological, habitual lying and tall tales! Including being present for Brandon Lee's funeral, when he most Definitely wasn't! He even later on said he met Bruce Lee through James Coburn! Seagal would've been like, eight years old! He had Absolutely zero connection with Hollywood until he was an Adult! And before all of that, he tried to constantly spin tales of being a former CIA Clandestine Operative! That went on until the Actual CIA publicly stated that Seagal has never been associated with them in any way, ever! Then he just sort of went silent about it, trying to act like he never said anything about it before! I eventually lost respect for Seagal, Completely! Is he a Legitimate Martial Artist? Absolutely! He is a Black Belt in Shito-Ryu Karaté, Kendo, Aikido, and in either Judo or Traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu! He also began getting into some classical Kung~Fu, Wing Chun, and Filipino Martial Arts! Is he a D-Bag with almost no moral code and pretty much incapable of not lying about everything? Unfortunately, also yes._* *_What a disappointment Seagal ended up being._* 👤

I think he would've been a legit Bad@§§ whether he had trained in Tang Soo Do, Tæ Kwon Do, or any other Martial Art. Same thing with Michael Jai White. Don't want to burst your (already burst) bubble, but he wasn't even that great a martial artist. And about his black belts.... One of his ex wives, Miyako Fujitani, has said on multiple interviews that the only reason he got a black belt was because her father, his father-in-law at the time, was the examiner! And not only that, but he was sleeping half-way during the exam!! Seriously, the only reason this Seagal douche ever became big was because he conned his way up the Hollywood ladder while taking advantage of the martial arts hype and popularity of the 80s and 90s. He made sure to always be portraited as the invinsible, cool good "special ops" guy with mob connections in every single one of his god aweful movies, amd the guillable American audience ate it all up with a ladle, and started believing he can fight. The guy couldn't even run, let alone fight....

I've trained in Kenpo since 1967 I'm 61 years old now. I've had serious bad fights with some very bad dudes in my early years. It was life saving to know my martial arts as well as I did. It saved my life. On the other hand, when I had serious falling out with other bad dudes I used my conviction in morales and values and gracefully bowed out of the confrontation. And that meant more to me than hurting someone. I don't know how steven seagal or what his outcome would be in a serious street fight. But, hopefully he would know what the best thing to do would be. Fight, or given the chance walk away. Great interview . I'm now a subscriber.

I have trained in martial arts for close to 40 years. I was a college wrestler that was good enough to go to the NCAA tournament back in the 70s. After college I was a sparring partner for Angel Cruz who was ranked #7 in the world by the WBC, WBA. I took up Judo and Japanese Ju Jitsu in college and have continued to practice and train in them. In the late 90s I started in BJJ and Pakiti Tirsa and did BJJ for 13 years. In all my training while working with others I have never tried to hurt the other guy. The key to training is to back off when the situation could lead to injury or death. When I teach choke holds I tell the student not to knock the other guy out as a lack of oxygen to the brain is not good. In my opinion Seagal is an asshole who likes to hurt those weaker than himself. That is not a true martial artist, that is a bully.

One actor in particular is bigger than Segal and surprise, surprise - Segal did not hurt him at all and was very gentle in their scenes. As a side note, I had a friend attend a Segal Aikido Camp back in the 90s when he was getting really popular, and said it was a huge let down that ended with Segal not appearing til the end when he gave a closing speech... about his next movie.

I think when Seagal first came out people thought of the fight scenes 'What the hell is this?' as they hadn't seen anything like it before. Central Fugal energy force is used more in Aikido than any other martial art and so it means that Seagal would smash people into things = inanimate objects like tables and chairs etc., using the attacking momentum (William Forsyth 'Out for Justice' for example - a great fight scene in my opinion). weapons skills combined with aikido moving out of the way body movements and redirecting fast incoming force made for those exciting smash and multiple attack scenes. Grappling on the floor wouldn't do it in movies or indeed on the street if there were more than one attacker, so Seagal's 'new' style of martial weapons and his very smooth method of gun use meant that this guy was exciting for young guys to see. He brought a sense of rough realism to the movies hardly seen before. Perhaps - but not in his defense - Seagal wanted to make the scenes as real as possible and certain techniques done fast and with the attackers momentum coming meant that Seagal could let loose, maybe also he had to prove a point as not many people had seen aikido before and as it was not a competing art, by design and philosophy, he wanted to show off its potential and so for him, a martial artist and not an 'actor' he would get carried away rightly or wrongly resulting in guys getting hurt. His style did in fairness portray a sense of realism that managed to eclipse most other action stars of the time resulting in a new 'wow' factor for action movie fans.

Interestingly, Benny the Jet was once asked about his time working with Jackie, Sammo and Yuen Biao. He said that they were all great athletes but Sammo was the one who could fight. There's a story told by Jackie of a time he got into a street fight in Hong Kong. He hit the guy in the face and was shocked to see a bone poking out from the back of his hand. He tried to push it back in, but it fell out! Turns out that it was the other guy's tooth that had become embedded in the Jackie's backfist! 😂

I would really like to know how he can make that statement that Jet Li and Jackie Chan are not real Fighters! When Jet Li started training wushu Kung Fu when he was 9 years old! And Jackie Chan started doing Kung Fu at age 7 years old. And every technique and style that they know is not for stage acting it is for real life encounters. They just happen to implement it in their movies, and coincidentally they happen to be actors. But it is not to suggest to discredit them as not being real martial artist or real Fighters for that matter. Because they are quite capable of Defending themselves in real life altercations. So he really needs to recant that statement. I can personally attest that Jackie Chan although maybe an actor but he is still a real martial artist just as well as Jet Li. This is the same mentality in the context that was stated about Bruce Lee that he was not a real martial artist / real fighter he was just an actor. But in fact his martial arts was developed by him specifically for real life street fights, and by point of fact, Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li are real skilled martial artists and are capable real Fighters. In other words they can fight for real not just for the screen. And that's all I have to say about that!

Jet Li told Playboy magazine that he'd never been in a real fight in his entire life (they did an article on martial arts moviestars at one point), he didn't even spar, he was a forms champion, not a fighting champion. In general, Shadow boxing, bag work, pad work, Road work, conditioning all show some degree of balance, speed, technique, power, strength, fitness etc.. Most people look good doing these as they don't hit back, but when faced with an opponent, they look ordinary at best. Sparring gives you an overall assessment of a fighter based ring craft, distance, timing, realistic usefulness of the techniques, pain tolerance, punching/kicking power fitness, guts, etc... Fighting is the real deal and next level of assessment. I was personally better at sparring than fighting, due to not having to makes Weight. Weight cutting was my hardest obstacle. Believe me, I've had some inter club Spars, harder than fights, due to the atmosphere. Almost all of these actors including JVCD mainly posses: flexibility, balance, technique, good bodies, although They lack the rest. I have yet to see JCVD do a 3min round of sparring, shadow boxing, bag work, or pad work. To me, he is not considered a fighter. An actor. I'm not hating anyone just using realistic measures. After watching this and I think I've made this statement before , I was talking with my house mate who happened to be a solid friend for quite a long time. 1 with Bruce Lee, Bruce Lee was not undefeatable , there is plenty of written and witnesses fights competitions and other situations where Brice Lee won and lost. On the challenges that he lost Bruce Lee asked to be taught and learned from them, then challenged them again and won. I think it would be the same with this guy. I do believe he managed to match Bruce Lee. If there was a rematch , Bruce Lee would have learned and then taken him on and won. On the Taekwondo situation and other martial arts , well ALL martial arts masters and teachers have a certain ego and promote their art as the best and kinda talk down, I e seen it happen. Funnily enough when I studied Jeet Kun do we just focused on what we could do and went home and practiced and used a little improvisation. After all that's how all these arts began He is to be respected for what he has achieved but remember Grandmaster Vic has a certain ego that every other person has and tend to view their experiences through a certain personal view point

some words about Steven from Director Sambo 70 school:Is Seagal really as good as he is shown in the movies? Good, really good! We, too, were skeptical at first, thought, grinning - an artist, shows various unreal. But after a closed training session with Seagal, our security officials (they are highly professional guys) said: “Hey, he's great!”. Many of the techniques shown to him are in the arsenal of our security specialists. They determined that in the combat part of aikido martial arts, Seagal knows specific serious techniques that lead to the neutralization of an opponent. And which of the Russian specialists came to this closed training session? There were guys from the personal protection service (FSO - ed.), And from a special police unit (OMON - ed.). And they all - at least the master of sports of the country. Our guys are very professional and they emphasized that Segal is definitely not below their level.

He and his then wife had an interview and she was asked how her love life was and she said it was great. Man, if looks could kill, she would have died from the look Segal gave her. She was shocked. Another time when making a movie, at the beginning there's an actor who was not aggressive at all, so Segal hit him on the chest I think and bounces him against a wall. Later he said that Segal said, "I'm the boss here, you do what I say." Now I'm paraphrasing, but it was something like that. I slowly over a couple of years, lost total respect for Segal. Interesting interview although I thought his remark about Jet Li is completely unfounded. I understand what Steven is saying, that there is a difference between movie fighting & competitive fighting being a martial artist for many years myself, but unless you fought someone yourself personally in the ring then its impossible for Steven to pass judgement on someones martial art ability. Especially if he hasn't gone toe to toe with them. Jet Li who has learnt Wushu since he was 6 from acclaimed Wushu teachers like Wu Bin and was on the Beijing Wushu team and who is a master of Wushu main weapons and also coached the Beijing Team and is fluent in at least 4 other styles of martial arts only knows movie fighting is a big oversight in my book if you ask me. Also Seagal may have his faults but you don't get to be the first foreigner to operate an Akido dojo in Japan without being good at Akido. That said interesting insight into the life of a Hollywood Stuntman.

I never got the same vibe between say Seagal and Chuck Norris. Watching his movies you can tell that Chuck has skills that are real life hardened, never have that feeling with Seagal. Although I respect his absolute skills with the martial arts. Same with JCVD etc.

Trust me in there prime you would not want to mess with those people unless you are really good or really stupid.

@@shawnsmith2610 Does it count as really stupid if I say I'd fight Chuck Norris just to be able to brag about getting my ass kicked by Chuck Norris?

I have to disagree with Steven Lambert on this, but Benny The Jet had the most potential to be a movie fight coming from a professional fighting background. I speak for myself when I say that the Meals on Wheels fight scene between him an Jackie is hands down the best fight scene, also the fight scene with him in Dragons Forever. I watched Scott Atkins Podcast where he interviewed Benny, and he spoke on how that fight scene was pretty much a recorded sparring match. Jackie was excited to go toe-to-toe with him and Benny gave him respect for that. It was a great interview. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p-dZJh8tZ8k.html

I don't think Seagal is a fake whatsoever and I would never call Aikido an inferior martial art. That said, I do think Seagal is dangerous, a bully and basically represents everything that martial arts should never be. I get tired of Seagal talking about how he's the toughest guy in Hollywood and how everyone else is fake. I'd like to see Seagal try to bully a master in Krav Maga and then let's see how tough he is.

Well that wouldn't be fair, I'd pick a black belt Krav practitioner any day even over a highly skilled MMA fighter if you're talking real self defense bc they have the situational and environmental awareness, the dirty tricks and legitimate "killer" instinct.

@@VikingSamurai a few years ago I ('useless aikido' guy, nikkyu at the time) joined a kravmaga training; all great guys, nice teacher, great ambiance. Because it was my first ever session, I was paired with the equivalent of a green belt to run the drills... lots of fun. Then the teacher said: 'last half hour, just improvise a bit' ; I switched to aikido techniques... noticed that some were difficult if not impossible to apply... but managed to get my partner in some very tricky situations; I know, 'uke is always cooperating in aikido'... well, I can guarantee you I absolutely HAD to let go lest I broke his arm. When I (with some luck, granted) managed to apply hijikimeosae (elbow hyperextension and wrist hyperflexed/twisted in one move), my partner got scared and moved in the illogical direction... because I just had him held tightly, I heard his elbow crack... I quickly let go and the coach told me 'don't do that crap again, you're going to hurt my students' ; I learned a lot and it was often a very tough lesson for me... but claiming 'aikido doesn't work' is just plain stupid too. I'm quite 'stiff' and you have NO idea how often I've nearly broken my fingers or wrists when not cooperating correctly with tori... and that's WITH me knowing what's coming and also taking ukemi as well as possible. Can each and every technique work in each and every situation against each and every opponent? no... same with all martial arts or disciplines. Several Kravmaga techniques also didn't work on me... well, the practitioner just adapts and tries something else, that's the point. Not 'bash' some technique or discipline, but learn, respect and adapt.
