Does the DeWalt DW735 impeller break up shavings?

In another video, I demonstrated how to remove the impeller from the DeWalt DW735 thickness planer to reduce its power draw, since a dust collection system with 4" hose makes it largely unnecessary by extracting chips and drawing cooling air past the motor. This video looks at a possible third result of using the impeller, whether by design or by chance, which is to break up wider wood shavings so they're easier for a dust collection system to handle.
I have been using my planer without an impeller since around mid-2020, both with a SHELIX helical cutterhead installed and with the stock knives. I have not had any issues, and don't plan on putting it back as long as my dust collector is available.

Interesting to see the comparison with the impeller vs. no impeller. Those chips were a lot smaller. That easter egg of yours gave me a good laugh!

I have the same planer and not once have I had the breaker trip! and I know why. i do not take such aggressive cuts. I crank that handle 1/4 a turn at most. It is nice to see the importance of the impeller.

It's been a long time since I tripped mine, and it was probably intentional. I can usually tell by the sound when I need to ease up.

Same. Like others I watched a bunch of videos before I made this investment and my first couple cuts I tripped the breaker. Ever since I’ve been doing 1/4 turns and haven’t had a problem since. Only downside is that the cuts take for ever!!!

After clogging my DC and Cyclone with my planer I switched over the a hose and bag method. Still an interesting video. 👍

Nice work. I'm guessing your pin-less moisture meter works by detecting the capacitance of the material. That would cause it to change values when your hand is near it.
@TheSnekkerShow
@TheSnekkerShow 2 года назад
I think you're right. It can give false readings if a thinner board is on top of another material, like a table top or a hand, but I never noticed that it detects in the wrong direction. I wonder if that's accounted for in the final number.

Excellent. Most people don't watch videos all the way through, so I sometimes hide the Easter eggs where nobody is expecting them.

A better way to test would be without dust collection, but the question was answered. I really am shooting for the Shelix upgrade on this planer. and I will remove my Impeller when I get one. Thanks for the Detailed Videos keep them coming.

Without the dust collection and with the blower fan removed it might have caused a backup in the planer.

+1 who is also waiting for availability of the cutter head upgrade…

Thanks, this is very informative. There’s a mod to this planer, via Etsy, that directs chips through the top. I think the impeller is out of play when this mod is installed. I’m curious if my dust collector will clog as a result…. I may have to install a 2 stage, cyclone system, to separate the larger chips.

It might be more of an issue if you're planning wider softwood boards at a higher speed.

@@TheSnekkerShowthanks. I work with hardwoods primarily, but often use the full 13.5”. I have the Shelix cutter head. So, we shall see if my dust system can handle the bypass of the impeller….
@TheSnekkerShow
@TheSnekkerShow 7 месяцев назад
@@rcote1234 If you have the SHELIX, you should be good since it makes much smaller chips. I was planning 13" maple last week, and other than eventually tripping the breaker on speed 2, it handled it quite well.

Great analysis. One question I have about the helical head is, the OEM size one needs the cutters removed to install, then put back in, but the, are they no longer even in height as they were when coming from the factory?
@TheSnekkerShow
@TheSnekkerShow День назад
@@packetlevel As long as they're installed correctly, they stay the same height. I show removal and reinstallation in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8J0rvBi8a0k.html

@@TheSnekkerShow Thanks - Yes, I see the installation. Factory makes a big deal of how they're set when delivered, question is what's the result after re-installation as seen on the wood. As an engineer I also imagine using the designated torque may be important - as it often is - 45 inch lbs if I remember correctly.

Wow, I had no idea! The question is ... is there really an advantage with smaller chips if you have decent dust extraction? Thanks for doing this! I think there are better ways to get veneer stock though. lol

You're right. I use a Thein baffle in my trash can, and on very few occasions the baffle has gotten clogged. The most recent time was two days ago, but I was actually cutting green maple rounds on my bandsaw. The shavings were only 2" long, but they clumped together like spaghetti and clogged the bandsaw cabinet and the Thein baffle. It would be more of a problem with a shop vac, but I wouldn't remove the impeller with a shop vac anyway.

OK.. I have another DW735 question. You ran the test comparing chip with and without the impeller, using regular knives. Now, what do the chips look like with the helical head? Second question. The dust collector adapter has a grid in the inside. I wonder if it would save power, and/or make dust collection better if that grid were removed entirely, reducing a little drag. Worth testing?
@TheSnekkerShow
@TheSnekkerShow Год назад
The helical head definitely creates smaller chips. I'm not sure about the grid. It might have more of an impact with larger shavings.
