Want to get an entry level actuarial job? Looking for an actuarial internship? Picking the best university to study actuarial science? Let's chat about that.
Long time computer engineer here (10 years) looking to maybe become an actuary. I was wondering do you need any specialized degree at all to get an internship?
So I'm in my first semester of college, (I'm late starting) I'm 38...i had kids very young and once they grew up I said this is my time. ANYWAY... I thought I'd become a counselor with a Human Services degree, but my freshman seminar class made me take 3 tests that were on my personality, interests and values and then it would show what was best for me career wise... Actuary was my highest scoring career. Once I looked into and saw it's A LOT of math and statistics I got super excited because I have always LOVED and been really good in math and science. I'm scared because of how much time it's going to take me and I'm not exactly a spring chicken. I'm going to binge all of your videos and hope it helps me. ❤️
Thank you for posting these videos. It's quite interesting, I studied Actuarial Science in Mexico and I couldn't do any interships due to odd schedule hours and summer classes. I relocated to Australia straight out of uni and basically networked my way into the actuarial world. It was definitely harder to get a job in a different country with no prior experience as an Actuary, but it is possible.
This is exactly what I've needed I'm still only in highschool and I had no idea what to do after college to become an actuary. I saw some older videos, then found this channel which helps me out with some ideas as to how to focus my future education
I would love to hear you talk about actuarial ethics and your day-to-day engagement with them. You've alluded to them in a few videos but without much detail. I'm highly considering the actuarial profession but am worried that my personal sense of ethics would be at odds with working for "big insurance".
As someone who went to UofT and just accepted my first fulltime offer, let me tell you that waterloo is THE place to go for locking down internships. It was a struggle getting my foot in the door as someone with social anxiety but I managed some how..
I'm seriously considering going back to school at the age of 40 for actuarial science. Due to my current career, I think online would be my only option as I travel A LOT for my current job. Could this affect getting hired once I graduate and pass exams. I plan on doing an internship prior to graduating, and live in Chicago, which offers many internships and jobs in the market. Thank you for your help.
Hi Michelle! I attended the info session today and saw your face. 😍😍However, I didn’t rotate to your room to actually say hello to you.😭😭Anyway, I just wanna let you know and hope we can connect and talk one to one. Have a great day!🥰🥰
If a Grade 12 Ontario Student is supposed to select a Univ. for Actuarial Sc. studies, and if the student would like to specialize in stock market perform/risk analysis please let me know the preference of Universities from among the following three: Univ. of Toronto Western Univ. Waterloo Univ. Thank you in advance
Hey Elle! I love ur videos!! I have a question about how good one needs a to be at math to be an actuary ? I like math and do think I’m above average at math, but certainly no genius at all. Would you recommend bring actuary for someone whose just above average ? As-B+
This video WAS BANG ON 👌 👏. I am giving CM-2 (Financial Engineering and Loss Reserving) this october. Want some tips and tricks as it will be open book this time.
Hi Elle, If I have A level Mathematics or A level statistics? Would I have the pre-requisite knowledge to do the first 3 actuary IFOA exams? Or do I need an actuary degree? Thanks
Is actuarial sciences fun? Is it all about dashboards and infinite series of exams? Is the salary worth all the sacrifices? What is the stress level at consulting firms like I won't mention the name, just pick any big one?
Are typical actuaries old school? Are they missing on all the new technology and new big data skills? Is it all about aggregating data and finding the mean? Are they still using triangles to reserve?
I enjoy being an actuary. I have fun trying to solve challenges in my job. As a fellow, I can say there is definitely an end to the exams The salary is pretty nice. I can't complain about that I don't work for a consulting firm, so I can't speak to their stress levels The majority of my coworkers are young
I took a pretty straightforward path to become an actuary (study at university > actuarial internship > full time actuarial role) Most of the career changers at my office started in other insurance roles in the company, started taking exams and then moved into the actuarial department
Hello I recently found you channel. I really enjoy the way you explain topics regarding being an actuary. I am currently getting my degree on physics and I am intrested in an actuarial career. I have a mathematical background due to my degree but I dont have any experience on what I have to do to become an actuary. Do I need to get a master to actuarial sciences or pass the actuarial exams (or both). Thank you so much for your help.
Im not sure if its common to get a masters in actuarial in Europe. Its very uncommon here in Canada. I'd recommend looking in to the ifoa exam process. I'm unfamiliar with it, as it isn't the same system here. Best of luck!
Hi elle im from Mumbai India and i want to become an actuary in the UK im doing my bsc in maths which will be better ms in act.sci. or data sci. For me ????? And what exams should i clear? Please let me know
If your goal is to be an actuary, then I'd recommend studying actuarial science. Data science is a great complement to actuarial work and its definitely possible to become an actuary with a data science degree if that's the route you want to go 😊
Hi Michelle, I wanted to ask you what are the technical skills mostly used in the actuarial profession? And also, I am about to start my master’s in actuarial science, is there any possibility that the company hires actuarial students for part time position during the semester?
At my company, we don't usually hire part time employees unless they had previously done an internship at the company, but its worth asking the question
I didn't go to university in Ontario, but I work here now. Most of my coworkers went to Waterloo of U of T and they seem to have had a good experience. There's no bad option though
What should be the minimum time we should study intensely to crack an exam? Are you able to clear max of ur exams in one go or u have made multiple attempts? Are actuarial exams more of practical and less of theory or vice-versa? What should be the minimum time we should study intensely to crack an exam?
Minimum time really depends on your prior knowledge of the subject. It also depends on how intensely you're able to study. I prefer studying fewer hours per day for a longer number of weeks because I know that after an hour or two, my brain can't focus anymore.
