Does this Bible Verse DESTROY the doctrine of Purgatory (or does it teach it?)

Over and over again, respondents to the PURGATORY IS 100% Biblical video have suggested that Luke 23:42-43 - "The Thief on The Cross" absolutely demolishes and destroys the doctrine of purgatory. But does it? As we'll see, this is an absolutely perfect illustration of exactly how purgatory works within the larger framework of repentance, penance, contrition, confession, purgation, and ultimately, the beatific vision. So silly. had protestants argue with me about the need for baptism, distorting this verse to argue against the need for baptism. First time ever heard it being used to argue against purgatory though, but still silly.

@michelleruss1 I can’t remember which apologist had a response regarding the possible baptism of the thief, but they used Luke 23: 40-42 to show that the saved thief seems to have a personal knowledge of who Jesus is and that is evident in his responses to the other thief “has done nothing wrong” and to Jesus “remember me when you come in your kingly power”. Maybe he was a follower of Jesus and maybe was baptized, we don’t know anything about his crime or when it happened.

Protestants use the St. Dismas (Thief on the Cross) to support a lot of their ideas. For example, they will also use it for "Sola Fide" (Faith Alone) showing that St. Dismas didn't do anything to be saved other than "believe", so we don't need works.

It's interesting that on Sunday, Jesus tells Miriam (Mary of Magdala) that he had not yet ascended to The Father. Ergo, today the thief didn't go to HEAVEN (The immediate presence of the Father.) Nor did Jesus. There is an intermediate state. If you don't like the term purgatory, don't call it that. Or. Do.

Here is my opinion on Purgatory. The repentant thief went to Paradise, the same place where Lazarus was in the Bosum of Abraham, because the Gates of Heaven were NOT opened yet as is stated in Jn.20:17-18; "Do not cling to me for I have not ascended..." In Eph.4:8-10; "Our Lord descended to the lower regions" In 1Pt.3:19-20; "Our Lord Jesus Christ went and preached to the Spirits in prison. Those who had DISOBEYED/SINNED since the days of Noah, 8 were saved" These Spirits were not in Hell! Hell is ETERNAL! And one of the most powerful proof is in 1Jn.5:16-17 in where it tells us that; NOT all Sin is Deadly, HELL! All wrong doing is sin, BUT not all Sin is Deadly and we are asked to PRAY for them...1Cor.3:13-15, Mt.5:22-26 AND, from one of the books that Martin Luther removed; 2Maccabees 12:45

Did not the Jews believe that everyone went to Paradise or Abraham's bosom to wait for either the end of the world or after the Messia came? Jesus went to hell to free all the waiting souls; at least that's how I read it.

Otherwise, why pray for those who died a holy death, but still had sin on their souls? 2 Maccabees 12:39-46.

The Jews believed in Sheol (Hades in Greek). There were different areas of this place. For example, in Jesus' parable we see two of them pointed out. The rich man was in a place of discomfort and Lazarus was in Abraham's bosom. Unfortunately, in English, "Sheol/Hades" got translated to "Hell" and we think of Hell as what the Bible calls the "Lake of Fire". They are different places. So, when we say that Jesus went to Hell after his crucifixion, he went to Sheol/Hades and NOT to what we think of as "Hell" in modern ideology.

As many of the commenters have shown, the popular Catholic view of purgatory is of a place. The medieval vision of purgatory included fire of penitential suffering before being permitted to enter heaven. At least that is how I’ve always heard it described. Your presentation should be perfectly acceptable to most evangelicals. If your understanding and the teaching of Pope Benedict had been articulated at the time of the reformation, I don’t believe it would’ve been rejected. After all, there is the passage in first Corinthians about some being saved, as Through Fire without anything to show for their life. There are also the Scripture passages about different rewards being dispensed in heaven. So the idea of individuals developing further in sanctification, as we are with Jesus, seems to me not be a problem. The problem was that what was taught about purgatory did not fit an understanding of believers belonging to Jesus on our deaths, being with him in heaven, as your presentation says. Again, your presentation should cause little problem, I believe, to most Evangelical Protestants. And it explains how it could be, that we the imperfectly sanctified, could suddenly become sanctified upon our deaths. Your presentation of the doctrine does not contradict other scripture passages regarding salvation such as the one which declares “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, (already, though obviously in process), “The old is gone. The new has come.”

He also could have been baptized by the apostles. 1.) He knew who Jesus was 2.) He knew Jesus was the messiah 3.) He knew Jesus had to suffer and die before coming in full power and glory 4.) He says "Remember me in your kingdom" Why couldnt he have been baptized before? Just b/c protestants assume he wasnt? St Cyprian and some other Church Fathers say he was.

Hi Kenny: Are you saying that if people confess their sins to Jesus, then they can enter Heaven like the thief on the Cross. This IS what Protestants believe as well. But, what's missing in the Protestant teaching, is "where do people go if they dont confess their sins?" I think they believe they go to hell, is that right? So, Im still confused about "where purgatory" is in the Bible? If we dont confess our sins, then we're sinful, and sin cannot enter Heaven, but only hell. I only know of purgatory from what my grandmother told me when my grandfather died. She heard his voice say, "..(her name)...Im steps away from Heaven. Say an indulgence please for me and then Ill be there." She did, and never heard his voice again. And just last week, I met a woman whose husband died a bit more than a month ago. She is Protestant. She woke up suddenly in her sleep, and heard her husband's😮 voice saying, "Anna, God found me!" Her daughters asked their Mom, "Then where was Dad for a month?" And this is when I suggested purgatory to this Protestant woman. I had tears and said that we, as Catholics believe we can pray for souls in purgatory so they are taken to Heaven. I had tears also cause I said, this was proof to me that all our Catholic prayers for the souls in purgatory are working. I think purgatory exists because of God's GREAT MERCY AND LOVE FOR US. AMEN.

when Jesus himself died, he did not go directly to paradise, he spent 3 days in the tomb and once resurrected he said to Mary Magdalene "do not touch me because I have not yet gone back to my Father" (his Ascension later) so 3 days to delivers the souls in purgatory, a fews days after to his ascension and finally in paradise. To meditate on: *Today* - before Abraham, *I Am* - *1 day is like 1000 years and 1000 years like 1 day* ! time has no influence on God! Even when he says "the hour has come..." all His passion was not made in 1 hour, he was hit, spat on, flogged, walked carrying his cross on a long road, nailed , pierced it was the 6th hour (noon) and died at the 9th hour (3:00 p.m.)

The good thief's experience does not negate the existence of purgatory but rather highlights the extraordinary grace of God. His immediate entry into paradise can be seen as a unique circumstance, reflecting the mercy of Christ at the moment of death. The Church teaches that while the good thief received immediate salvation, this does not imply that all souls can bypass the purification process if needed 56.

Mr Kenny, I really like you, you have touched on a personal pet peeve I have with some Protestants. Nowhere does the Bible say that we are “absent from the body and present with the Lord.” Rather, Paul mentions his personal desire to be absent from his body and present with the Lord. (2 Corinthians 5:8 - “We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord”)

St Dismas accepts his punishment for his sin. He doesn’t come with faith alone, and Christ doesn’t reject the offering of his death. If you’re offering up a suffering (that is accepted) and you don’t go to purgatory all that that means is that this verse proves indulgences.

@enderwiggen3638

That’s problematic in that it identifies two different heavens … which is not the case. Everything on the old covenant was fulfilled by Christ with the new covenants. Those who lived during the OT were not ready for the full teachings of God. From the start to the end of the OT God was preparing and taming humanity to be ready for the arrival of Jesus. Your type of thinking is what has some who say they believe in God thinking the OT God is different than the NT God. Which Christian’s know is false. Your way of thinking is what also makes some protestants think that Paul’s gospel in his epistles is different than the other apostles gospel in the 4 gospels. Which Christian’s know is fake …. Especially when you know Luke was taught by Paul. I will be generous and say you are just learning still about the true faith. There are many channels which go deep into the scholarly theological teachings of the church which include both the bible roots of the teaching as well as the early Christian’s. The only real questions is how stubborn your heart is with the false teachings from protestants who don’t really understand scripture.

Jesus said to the thief on the cross today thou shalt be in paradise with me that means the thief would be in the same paradise as Jesus. Why did the thief not go to Purgatory because Jesus forgave the thief. But for us Christians we know the truth we know Jesus died on the cross for our sins and yet we turn away from him and sin we have to pay a price and that is called purgatory

The thief hanging on his own actual cross was also being purified through his punishment. It drives me a little batty that Protestants use that as a demonstration of faith alone. Is that the normal plan for the average person? To sin to the point of that sort of punishment and then die that way while professing directly Jesus? I think sanity asks for a little less indifference to the actual circumstances in terms of salvation.

1. He admitted his guilt. 2. He agreed that his punishment was just. 3. He rebuked his fellow thief - a spiritual act of mercy. 4. He proclaimed Jesus to be innocent. 5. He declared that Jesus was a King. 6. He declared that Jesus' Kingdom was not of this earth. 7. He asked Jesus for mercy. Is that the silence of "faith alone"?

Hey Kenny! Thanks, what a gift we have. We should all want ardently to be purified to be with Complete Purity. To think we are sufficient already lacks humility. And a gift, honor and responsibility we have to help those that are in that state. But, I would like you to read Rev. 20:4-6. You should find this interesting The ones seated on thrones are Saints that judgement was already passed through. (we are invited to be these) Ones died for Christ are martyrs and have a special place besides Him. (a gift to be these) A thousand years is a description of a very long time. Here it is... The rest of the dead did not come to life for a [long time] this is their first resurrection. ( the first resurrection?= the resurrection of their SPIRIT. because they have already died. Blessed and holy are they because the SECOND DEATH will not touch them, (death of their spirit or committed to damnation, hint- cast out where there will be gnawing of teeth ) So the big question is........... WHERE WERE THEY FOR THAT LONG TIME AFTER DEATH AND BEFORE THE RESURRECTION OF THEIR SPIRIT??? I suppose like Saint Paul said in 1 Cor. 3:12-15 A moment of cleansing by fire, impurities being burned away. Kinda like purifying gold. Purgatory is a GIFT. The basis of purgatory is burning desire to be with God. They are blessed because they know they will see Him but just don't know when. Our expiation can start here in the physical. The more longing we have for God here, the more enduring and following His example. The more we accept and hold the resources He have offered the better we are. Like in court, the more witnesses we have to bear testimony on our behalf the better case we have. Yes, when you are before Purity, Judgement and Mercy the soul will want to go to be cleansed (change to clean clothes) in order to be with God. Yes there are few occasions where our accepted suffering in body was sufficient to enter. There is also a wonderful book called The Manuscripts of Purgatory, along with many mystical Saints whom all collaborate. Thanks Keep sharing

Thank you so much for the amazing video! I hate to be so insistent but I hope that if you ever do a video on the papacy and peter being the "Petros," could you adress acts 4:11 please, along with the other objections? That is something that would help me greatly as your videos guide me in my faith with my Catholic heart with a Protestant brain so I can understand things so much better.

Christ says in Matthew that, like Jonah, he would be in the belly of the earth for 3 days. Acts tells us Christ remained on earth for 40 days before He ascends. So there were 43 days BEFORE Christ went to Heaven. Did the good thief go ahead of the Lord to make sure the lights were on for His arrival? Or, more likely, Paradise that Christ mentions, is Abrahams Boosom. The place where the prisoners Christ preached to in 1st Peter were awaiting the Messiah They claim there is no "purgatory " Then please explain where Jesus' Spirit went for the 3 days his body was dead? Sacred Scripture says ",, that he went and preached to the spirits who lay in prison. " ( 1 Peter 3:19) Where was this prison? was it in Heaven? If so why would there be a prison in Paradise? Was the prison in the Hell of the Damned? If so why would the damned need to hear the Gospel? . Scripture for Purgatory Luke 12:58-59; 1 Corinthians 3:15; Mathew 5:25-26 ... temporary agony. Hebrews 12:6-11 God's painful discipline. Mathew 12:32 no forgiveness ... nor in the age to come. 1 Peter 3:18-20 might be purgatory (limbo?). 1 Peter 4:6 preached to the dead. Revelations 21:27 ... nothing unclean shall enter heaven. Hebrews 12:23 souls in heaven are perfect. Colossians 1:24; 2 Sam 12:13-14 extra suffering. 2 Macabees 12:43-46 sacrifice for the dead. (not in Protestant Bibles) 2 Timothy 1:15-18 prayer for Onesiphorus for "that Day." 1 John 5:14-17 ... mortal/venial sins

I’m convinced that there’s room in scripture to permit the doctrine of purgatory, but I can’t figure out WHEN it happens. Also WHAT actually happens in purgatory? WHEN: This matters since we are supposed to pray for the dead. Wouldn’t want to waste a lot of time that could be devoted to the living. Okay, so God lives in a time dimension that is outside our own earthly one. When we die our spirits will also be outside of earth’s time/space continuum. Even if we had to be sanctified a lot to become holy enough for God, why would we need to take many earthly years to do so? How do purgatory years apply in God’s eternity? Also, why would they have to? WHAT actually happens? So it’s not just our holiness that is perfected through earthly sanctification. Our faith also is perfected in sanctification, and as an entire chapter in Hebrews says “it is counted to us as righteousness”. Secondly, on earth we learn to wrestle with our three enemies: the world, the flesh and the devil. We won’t have to fight any of those after death, and our righteousness is imparted anyway, because it is just filthy rags, compared to what Christ through the cross imparts to us. Not here to argue, just can’t wrap my head around it. I’m trying as a potential convert.

Jesus didn't go to Heaven that day ("today"). He went up at The Ascension. And the suffering of the thief coupled with his contrition is a purgation in itself. Also, on Baptism, no one knows if he was actually Baptized because Jesus and the Apostles actually did baptize people, and he could have been one of those; w/c explains why he knows so much about what Jesus is about.

I thought you were going to say: Hebrews 9:27 And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgment, I see that one more often. I don't even know why? The verse doesn't say "then heaven or hell".

They put themselves on the cross, but they weren't being crucified, and they weren't present, defending Jesus against the other theif. They also are not living or dying under the old covenant but under the new covenant. This is what happens when you read the bible without any real understanding.

The reason the thief is on the cross is not explained. All you can say is that Roman’s identified him as a thief, but is that charge valid and just? Nor does anyone know the heart of the thief with respect to their sins … which Christ said will dictate how culpable and debt related you are at judgment. If the thief was penitent for his whole life and forgiving of others … God could consider them being worthy of mercy.

In my dream I was taken to a place and I saw about five rows of heads lying on the ground and five rows continued without end there where so many heads on the ground. When stopped on the ground a head spoke to me he said with great difficulty I am your Uncle I can't move from here at that precise moment I could feel what my uncle was feeling he knew had a head but he did not have a body so he could not move from that place. My Uncle said to me please pray for me so I can move from here. The next day I offered my masses and Rosaries for his release. The next night my uncle came to me in a dream he was walking and he said to me that he visited his family in South Africa and my Brother in Mocambique and that my Brother was selling his business and it would be successful I phoned my Brother in Mocambique because I am in Portugal and I asked him if he is selling his business he said he is negotiating the sale of his business two days later my Brother informed me that he had signed the sale of his property. Now being a Roman Catholic I was taught that Purgatory has fire like hell but in my dream it wasn't like that.

The thief on the cross has had his own penance right on his own CROSS! Why suffer again in purgatory? That's double jeopardy.

I bought that book you mentioned and also his book on Sola scriptura. I buy most of my books on Kindle as I did these books. I started reading the book on Sola scriptura yesterday.
