Does Univibe sound better before or after distortion?

Using the Fulltone deja vibe instead of the newer univibe versions, because IMO it just sounds better. Which do you prefer? Univibe type effects before distortion or after distortion? Did you like the vibe on the delay path?
Interested in checking out the dejavibe?
You can support this channel by using our reverb affiliate link:

Sidenote: Sorry about the vocal audio quality... having some audio issues with my new sony camera. Next video should sound better on the vocal audio.

Very informative as usual....for me I usually put the overdrive before the univibe...and all the modulation pedals including the vibe are with the fx loop.

Years ago I would've killed to get that sound, now i think I would kill if I heard that sound. Gets pretty annoying real quick. I prefer the effect on one side with the dry on the other. You still get the stereo separation without the annoying sea sickness thing going.

Love these experiments, and that you don;t say “you should.” Still saves me so time but, but gives a deeper understanding of why, and also sparks the imagination while you are demoing. There are case uses for distortion into univibe, though I love the phasing swooshes of the univibe into distortion best.

thanks for this, I recently got into one of the vibe patches on my multi FX and want a proper Univibe pedal, but was curious about signal chain order thanks loads for this Brian, saved me a lot of pissing about (in my case the order is also important due to my board set up, 1 way is just swaping out a pedal the other way means a total board reshuffle)

Great video, a common question raised by many players. Good luck with the Terraform! I might buy it. I sold my Keeley Workstation; I was using it for modulation in place of individual pedals, mostly. So, if the Terraform sounds good and doesn't cost me my house, I may give it a go.

Long time fan of the univibe sound, Hendrix and Trower of course but I never had one 'til recently. Mine is a Klinger, made in Australia. I absolutely always had any modulation effect post distortion as a rule (chorus and flanger when I had one etc) but after getting this vibe, it sounds magic at the start of the chain.

I’m a huge fan. Thank you for everything you are doing! I recently started following you and Blake on both of your podcasts. So these questions are really for both of you. Have you ever talked about what strings you play? And also, did you ever think about doing a video/podcast about how important it is to just remember to keep playing? I mean not getting stuck in the rabbit hole of gear. Which is a great thing to do! But none of it matters if we don’t remember to keep playing. Just a thought. Thanks again. -James

I prefer the Univibe before OD/Dirt. A phaser works well in the same way. However, remember that if you use a compressor before your drive to give it a boost and sustain, make sure to put the Univibe BETWEEN them. If you place it before the comp, the "throb" will be smoothed out and diminished. Thus the interaction with the OD will not be as pronounced.
@robdownes5159

I kind of like both, maybe a uni vibe with a loop that you can add overdrive to with a switch to select where it sits is needed. Great work on the wet dry style chorus, really does make a much wider sound.

So trippy with headphones on. It's definitely smoother sounding and less jarring when it's univibe into distortion. The other way is cool too, but it's so much choppier feeling. Almost like the difference between triangle and square wave tremolo.

Nice comparison. Thanks Brian. The stereo effect of this stereo deja vibe is huge but most of the univibe effects I know are mono (deja vibe, dunlop, rotovibe, real 60's univibe?). I always put my fuzz face in front of the deja vibe (mono) into a cranked Marshall (as would Hendrix). In your video at 4:00 you definitely get the mushy Hendrix/Univibe kind of sound. I love it. Thanks again. Vincent.

Terraform user from the future here: my favorite 'easter egg' function in the Terraform is in the U-Vibe mode. Take a mids-rich vintage style fuzz like a one-knob tonebender clone, and run it into the U-Vibe with the depth all the way down, i.e. no oscillation from the vibe, and voila nasty mid-scooped fuzz! It's like the difference between Fuzz I and Fuzz II on the Boss FZ-2, all from the inherent EQ curve of the vibe.

I've always preferred modulation (outside of chorus and doubling and volume) before distortion, doesn't get as harsh or crazy and cuts better, that said the jet flange of phase with alot of fuzz or distortion before it is a cool effect. My answer is both lol, have a fuzz first and an overdrive then some modulation then a big muff. All that said, stereo pedals after dirt, wow amazingly.

Bought my first Univox Uni-Vibe back in 1974. Guitar -> wah -> fuzz/distortion -> Uni Vibe -> amp. That's the layout for that 'Machine Gun' sound. IMO: Reversing the Vibe & distortion order gives a more 'lumpy' vibe-sound. Which is fine.............if you're looking for 'lumpy'. ;-)

monster sound. How about before AND after? Your TC chorus effect definitely adds some low-mid and bass which overdrive my little speakers. I really like a fuzz or delay "sandwiched' between TWO vibes for a cool fat sound. I'm using a Dunlop Univibe into my effect chain then to a Roland JC120 with the vibrato on full depth but slowest speed. Seems to rock the house and now cracks have appeared on the ceiling! My small brain guideline: Time based effects (reverb, delay, chorus and sometimes flanger) sound best after dirt. Tonal effects (wah, phase, univibe) sound best before dirt, because they impact the tonality of the dirt. Stereo can be accomplished in numerous ways, as shown in the video. All that being said, the best rule is to listen with your ears. I once heard a blues guitarist put reverb before dirt, and in that context it sounded stellar.
@Finniganmydog
@Finniganmydog 5 лет назад
jbognap I agree have tried all combinations and vibe and Phase before Gain is where it is at = more chewy, organic, and becomes integrated with the dirt. I do like a tape delay pre dirt however (but numerous delays after in the effects loop as well) for some special sauce

I've gigged with Univibe after dirt for a few years now. I use it more as a Chorus alternative and even clarifier. In a crowded bar and lousy band mix, the Univibe set with low intensity will kind of pull my signal out from everything else.

late reply from a synth/sampler egghead: i have been working on a modestly “complete” stereo pedal chain for a couple years (along with my modestly larger pedal toolbox) and i have the EHX Operation Overlord + TC Viscous Vibe so i can use them in either order while preserving an already-stereo signal, and i love BOTH orders while leaning just a little bit toward dirt-before. however, the VV does not have good control over stereo LFO offset, so i’m crazy enough to be considering buying a second one used to manually dial in the stereo sweep, as Jean Michel Jarre has always done with 2 Small Stones. the VV is an excellent univibe especially to run after other stereo effects (a Boss/Roland Dimension-type chorus before it is a B L E S S E D pairing), it’s just missing a couple things for actually changing the stereo field in the Toneprint editor. but having 2 of them would create additional new options that could get incredible in the studio - if I have something split into 2 stereo chains or 2 different/manually doubled stereo tracks that I want to glue together, I can use the VV’s in actual Vibe mode to re-correlate them, mixed with a separate dry signal with its own panning placement etc. to rebuild the uni “chorus.” when i have 3D univibe on my elec pianos + stereo multitap delays it’s over for you bozos.

I personally dig the vibe before the dirt pedals.Thanks for the education, great video! Especially considering I just picked up a first version Deja Vibe last night and hadn't even considered putting it at the front of the chain before my dirt pedal. Now I'm wondering if the Ventilator pedal could have similar results?? Also what are your thoughts on Compressor pedal placement? Specifically a fet comp pedal? I've heard interesting things putting it after dirt pedals and in my chain it couldn't be first regardless as I run a vintage germanium fuzz pedal at the front and they don't like coming after anything accept your guitar. Unless you have the right wah pedal setup but I have yet to play with a wah. Anyway thanks again and I really appreciate any advice you have!

Love the stereo ping-pong. Brought a question to mind. One of my favorite modulation pedals is a Dunlop TS 1 stereo pan tremolo. Into a fuzz or a good drive pedal with a smooth curve the shifting volume levels mean the fuzz clips more and less in alternating sides. Sounds magic. But I have not seen many other tremolos which offer that ping-pong - why is that? Is that difficult to build or is it that there simply is no market for such a pedal?

I use Two Messa heads and Marshall cabs , one slightly breaking up the other with lots more distortion, sounds incredible, once you go two amps stereo it's hard to go back to using one , using a Boss GT 1000 I can split the effects to different amps creating real cool ambient tones.....never going back to one amp....Univibe rules....
@darwinsaye

I personally prefer modulations and filters before drives (as it would be if I was only using amp overdrive). After distortions they tend to cause too many nasty peaks. Wah after distortion doesn’t even sound like wah anymore and sounds more like a synthesizer. The only exception in some cases would be a flanger, which for whatever reason can get rich but not ugly if it follows distortion.

Love these videos. I don't know if you're familiar with Copper Sound Pedals: they have a reverb "Daedalus" which contains an "FX Loop" which takes the wet reverb signal and applies whatever effects are in the loop while keeping your dry signal unaffected. I have to mention it specifically because I've never seen anything like it before. Have you ever come across a pedal with this feature?? If so I'd really like to know how you use it and if there are other pedals out there that utilize it
