In 1980, I spent three weeks in a "clinical ecology" hospital for treatment for a pesticide poisoning. During the stay, we found the foods I could still eat without any inflammatory response, but also spent time in classes learning how to wash things. One important cleaner we were taught to use is washing soda, sodium carbonate, not to be confused with baking soda, sodium bicarbonate. We would use the washing soda for everything: dishes, surfaces, and even food. At this level of sensitivity, we even had to rinse everything with distilled water. I'm long past that acute stage, and rinse with tap water, but still wash dishes and food with washing soda. For veggies, I swish the greens in a bath that includes washing soda, then rinse thoroughly. Supposedly it removes some pesticide residues and bacteria. I even wash meat with washing soda solution! I've experienced fish or pork that had an off-smell and was slimy, but when properly washed with the soda solution, smelled and looked quite fresh and without slime. If interested, I can send you a video of how I use the washing soda; perhaps you can test the effectiveness of my techniques...

So sorry you went through that. I am disappointed the vinegar didn't do very well in this test. I like to use products that are natural vs the chemicals in most cleaners. The only holdout in my house at the moment is bleach. I use it to sanitize puppy rags, mop heads, and my kitchen cloths. I also want it as an option for water sanitizing in the event of an emergency. I'd never heard of using washing soda as a cleaner and dish soap. I'm intrigued

As a caregiver the only things that gets rid of smell of urine is vinegar and I use it more than recommended and I put it in the bleach dispenser. I also mix with water( more than recommended) just add some water and use it as a spray like air freshener in the room to get rid of smell in the bed couch and other fabrics around. It works

I can concur with these comments. Vinegar works well when more is used than suggested. I will put 5-6 cups in the washing machine drum. Great results. But we are talking about a cup per cubic feet for my machine. I have done this for human and pet urine. My sister is highly allergic to all laundry detergents (yes, all of them due to many many allergies). She buys the highly concentrated vinegar bottles (so her laundry room isn’t constantly covered in vinegar bottles.)

I too use vinegar in the washer. I stopped using fabric softener decades ago after seeing the disgusting gunk on laundromat washing machines and the smell. Fabric softener also builds on the fabric. After a while towels are no longer absorbent, cleaning rags are no longer absorbent and will start streaking if used on glass. I also use wool dryer balls to eliminate static electricity and fluff the clothes. I use full strength distilled vinegar (with about 1 Tbsp of dish liquid as a general all purpose cleaner around the house to clean in the kitchen, bathroom, windows, dusting, etc.

Living with a incontinent, bed bound 93 year old taught me that pre-soaking used bed linen and fabric absorbent pads in the washing machine with a cup of vinegar for about 20-30 min absolutely TOTALLY removes the odor of urine. I use vinegar instead of fabric softener. Then in the dryer, I place wool balls with about 8 drops of lavender on each ball. The fabric is not as "soft" as toxic softener liquids, but it's good enough with a very light natural lavender scent. Vinegar also helps set the dye in new blue jeans so color doesn't fade or bleed on the first few wears. I never thought of it being a disinfectant in the laundry. Thanks for you video. 👍🌻

I was interested in your results as I use vinegar in my fabric softener compartment, not with a mind to disinfect but to rinse the hard minerals out that are in our water; it definitely makes a notable difference when you have extremely hard water. My husband works with concrete and I fill both the bleach and the fabric dispenser with vinegar for his clothes and it gets all of it out, otherwise you would feel the concrete that was impregnating the fabric. If you use vinegar as a fabric softener for a long time and then go back to laundry sheets, you will notice a palpable buildup on your clothes. Vinegar removes buildup and helps neutralize ph of detergent, softening your clothes. I know you can't prove it quantitatively, but it absolutely softens fabric and doesn't make your clothes smell like vinegar at all

What vinegar does a GREAT job at: I'm an artist that works extensively with construction materials (think set builder and that almost describes it.) I end up at That Thing In The Desert because some of the art I contribute to is intended to be experienced and burned out there. The dust on that dry lake bed closely resembles drywall dust, which I'm also very familiar with. If you have ever gotten either of these on your hands, or worse on your face, or deep in the threads of textiles you can appreciate how horrible it feels and how hard it is to get out. Detergent just won't do it. Many regular attendees quarantine the outfits they wear out there, and the gear they use, not even allowing them inside their homes. Anyone having to clean up after having worked with drywall, or having remodelling done in their home knows this problem. Drywall dust is just awful. A simple solution is to add baking soda to the tub of the laundry machine and vinegar to the soap dispenser, but honestly, if it's only the dust you are trying to deal with you can skip the soda and just include vinegar. The acid breaks down the base. That terrible feeling from the dust - like all life is being sucked out of everything- goes away!
@FieldOfFocus

There is a product called Monterey Consan 20 that is basically a concentrated disinfectant similar to Lysol, but with fewer ingredients. Primarily it is a fungicide, but it also controls bacteria, algae and mildew. We put a small amount in the washer fabric softener dispenser when we wash towels. The towels stay fresh longer as well as being softened by the Consan. A bonus is that the front load washer never gets mildew or becomes smelly as it prevents mildew growth around the door seal. Benzalkonium Chloride, the active ingredient, has been in use for a very long time and while hazardous in very concentrated forms, it is generally considered safe for all sort of applications including hand sanitizers and medications in low concentrations.

Love your videos and time you put into making them. This is just a suggestion. In this video i do believe that the vinegar was way too diluted with as little amount of vinegar you used. I pour 3 -4 full cups of vinegar directly into my washer in the first of the wash cycle that is filled with dirty clothes and filled with water. I use about 3-4 full cups in my laundry depending on how big my load is and if its really stinky.. I would recommend retesting the vinegar and adding 3-4 full cups directly to the washer in the begining of the washing cycle. A side note, different brands of White vinegar have different acidic levels too. The strongest i have found is the " Heinze" white distilled brand. I would think that the stronger the acid level is, the better But, some bad stuff love an acidic environment. I do know that when i use vinegar in my dogs laundry that it completly removes all doggie odors. I use an all natural unscented enzme laudry soap so the vinegar does a great job of removing stinky odors. Which would lead me to believe it may be killing the bacteria that causes odors??

Please, share what you would add to your wash cycle to sanitize your laundry! Yesterday I watched a video about going paperless & using fabric cloths (squares of old Tee shirts, old flannel sheets) instead of toilet paper & washing the dirty cloths together & separate from other laundry. It made my skin crawl because I thought about the bacterial even after wash & dry cycles. She said something about colloidal silver to sanitize but I don't have that. How would you launder fabric clothes used to wipe a bottom?!?

First, thank u for answering ❤ I have been doing exactly what u suggested for the past 6 months, I first scrape it, then I use the power dawn with the scrubber top, and then I scrape it again. I have NOT tried the cornstarch, I will try adding that step. When I washed the pj pants it comes out almost clean, the material is soft and dry but heavier than it should be. I've tried washing the load twice and it does help somewhat. I've tried 1/4 cup of vinegar, same results...maybe I'm not using enough? If u come across anything new that u hear of, perhaps u could do a show on that subject as there must be thousands of others with the same problem. Thank you so much for your help.

My research tells me that vinegar is a fairly weak antibacterial agent and can work optimally on hard surfaces to kill some bacteria but only if it's left in place for at least 30 minutes. If you put it in the rinse cycle of the washer it will be so attenuated with water that it will be useless. You should try it with 20% or 30% vinegar.
