Does Your Class Need a Brain Break? | Enriching Your Classroom Culture Through Play.
The school year is in full-swing. We bring our best for our students everyday. Slowly (or maybe quickly!) we are figuring out our students' personalities, the flow of our lessons, and the culture that organically develops day by day in our classrooms. Even though there is almost always a lot going on in our classrooms and schools more generally, I feel like we all still experience school days that are just plain BORing. I'm talking about the days when the lesson was fine, the behavior was decent, you hit all your talking points, and....you can't help feeling like you and your students are flatlining, fast. As teachers, it's our job to revive, refresh, rejuvenate, and renew the energy in our classrooms, and that process can be quicker, and more fun than we think! When my students and I are feeling the "school day slump," that's usually the time I like to disrupt our day with a Brain Break. This short, controlled "play time" has had positive benefits for my classroom, like building my teacher-student relationships through low-stakes competition, sharpening my students' ability to stay alert, giving us something to look forward to when our classwork is done, and bringing a surge of good, clean FUN when we need it. So like a great dessert after a big meal, enjoy a Brain Break with your class and see what it does for your classroom culture. And as always, do all you can to stay Fit 2 Teach! See you again soon! Be well.
