Mast cell tumors (MCT) are not only the most common skin malignancy in dogs, they can be straightforward or frustrating and also controversial.
There is a wide range in biologic behavior and outcomes, and a confusing number of diagnostic tests, prognostics factors, and treatment protocols.
This first of two MCT vlogs will highlight the essential information you need to know and update you on what’s new with mast cell tumors.
Do not forget to subscribe because the following vlog will be all about the recently FDA-approved intratumoral treatment Stelfonta (tigilanol tiglate).

My dog is 14 and it appears to be spreading noticeably throughout. Her vet did an aspiration then threw it away because I had a balance on my account. So I’m not sure the grade. I’m praying for another 3 good years but she has had a life longer then most dogs these days , im grateful for her blessing my life after my parents passed she was right there by my side through it all. She could smell a tear from the next room and come running to comfort me. She loves to watch animal planet during big cat week. Her eyes intensely glued to the screen. So much personality. Best friend ever. ❤❤

My Australian shepherd had his first mast cell tumor discovered and removed due to a dog fight wound when he was around 2 years old. It was staged at 1. By the time he was 10 years old he had a number of them, including a couple of stage 4s. I had to shave him nose to tail and down to the bottoms of his feet so we could see his whole hide and not miss any during the removal process. I was told at the time his life expectancy was 6-12 months. I prayed for him daily and gave him a blessing. He lived to be 13 and very healthy and active! He lived 3 years beyond expectation; his vet said I'd won the lottery, so to speak, when he was still alive and well a year after the surgery.

So glad to see you back with your informative and professional advice. I've recommended your site to both of my oncologists (in France and Australia) France, where our golden, Mia was diagnosed with an high grade and agressive MCT. She's since had two surgeries within a six week period followed by a chemo protocol for 5 weeks to get our little girl well enough to travet home to Australia, and then in Australia - we flew home in late December). We were hoping to get on top of this nasty cancer, however it has now metastasized to her spleen in the time of her travel back to Australia and start up again with chemo. Devestating news. My question is that you give very informative advice on what to do from the beginning, treatment options (I bought all of your recommended supplements which I swear are helping her stay alive longer and healthier), which give us hope, but not the concequences of when it travels to organs. Nobody talks about what options (if any) or what to expect if/when it does metastasize to an organ. Do we just give up and stop all chemotherapy? What are the possible issues she and others could entail? It's about comfort and quality of life and I worry by allowing the MCT to take over her body that I'm adding to her long term discomfort.In our situation we accept she's in a pallative situation, but she is still happy and her normal self and I can't help but feel like I could be doing more for her. All I see is that there is further spread of tumor I know you can't give specific advice but for information she is on pred, antihistamines and a proton pump inhibitor (Esomeprazole) and her support supplements. She was given weeks, not months to live and it's been six weeks. The only signs I see is that her spleen (or stomach) sometimes swells and periodically she has increased panting and appetite (from the pred I assume). She still enjoys life and walks at the beach. I just don't know what to expect and if I could be doing more. MCT first appeared in late July, surgery September & October followed by Chemo x 5 weeks. Thank you for reading and all your advice. I have felt very empowered when with our vets/oncologists in this sad journey.

Thank you so much for this information. My dog had mastcell tumor highest grade in all scales, and I didnt have this experience of several opinions. In Portugal , all vet oncologist specialists she went defend cirurgy and predisolone. Your vlog is converging to my instinct as my dog ended dying of ascite, caused by predisolone (which I was given much less than the vet order because I was aware the probability of dying of the cure and not the disease...) God bless your cientific doubt about the existents protocols. That's what makes science evolve.

My dog went to the vet today and they said his two mast cell tumors are cancerous. The literature they gave me suggests 70% of dogs who get MCTs only get one. So for him to have at least 2 is pretty unusual. 1 is surface level on left side and 1 is deeper near kidney area. The vet also said surgery is the best option but removing those 2 isn’t a guarantee he doesn’t have others internally since there is already some degree of spread. If I knew removing those two would buy him a long life past age 6 then I would pay to have it done immediately. But it’s already spreading and I’m just not prepared to spend thousands on chemo/radiation because, statistically, that only buys most dogs about a year. Not sure how to proceed. I don’t want to put him through the trauma of surgeries, Penrose drains, further exhausting treatment, etc. But I also don’t want to lose him. I think I’m decided on just letting him live life and be happy with the time he has left then putting him to sleep if he starts showing signs of pain. I feel like I’m giving up on him and I feel guilty cuz I love him so much. Such a hard decision.

@ReaganThatcher 2 года назад
@@Antonio-di4cr Sorry to hear that. When I posted this in January my dog had 2 tumors. Now he has at least 6. I believe the vet aspirating/testing the tumors caused a harsh reaction and made them even more active. He, like yours, is still getting around fine and seems happy. He still has an appetite and carrying on like normal. If it helps you decide, I’m glad I didn’t do the surgery. If these tumors are this aggressive/reactive then I have no doubt if I did the surgery to try to remove the original 2 then these others would have just popped right up because they are all in different areas. I certainly am not doing a surgery now; I don’t think he’d survive having 6 masses cut out all over plus I’m sure more would grow. I say let the pup enjoy life as long as they can and then help them with a peaceful death down the road if they start showing signs of serious pain.

@@Antonio-di4cr Yeah it sucks for sure. I spoke to probably 5 people I know personally who were in this situation. The ones that did surgeries regret it and said their dogs were in such pain and misery during their last months of life. The ones who didn’t do surgery were glad because their dogs were comfortable until the end. I only spoke to one person who did surgery, chemo/radiation and prolonged their dog’s life more than 2 years but they said it cost them thousands upon thousands and they would never do it again. Thanks for the prayers! I’ll try to keep in touch and comment if anything changes. If I forget though feel free to comment in a few months to ask for an update or let me know how your dog is doing. Our French Bulldog, one day before surgery on benign growths, I did a complete massage on her. I found one tiny growth on the inside of her thigh. Her surgery went very well, but the tiny growth the size of a grain of rice was Mast Cell Cancer. If I could say something to all dog owners, “Don’t Wait Aspirate!”. We are very fortunate to have a Canine Cancer Center close by our home, they got right on it with Palladia. She is now cancer free, in total remission, God blessed us. Please do massages and if I had anything to tell people, is to not wait Aspirate.l

Hi Dr. Sue! Can you give us a basic primer on the connection between white blood cells, lymphocites, and treatments for lymphoma? For example, safflower oil seems to boost white blood cells and lymphocytes and can help with remission in cutaneous lymphoma. Other supplements out there also boost immune response and white blood cells. However, medical treatments, e.g. prednisone and chemo, drive white blood cell counts down, and my understanding is that this is what helps put the cancer into remission. These 2 things seem contradictory. Is it productive or counter-productive to try to boost immune response/WBC count through supplements/diet while your dog has cancer, with or without chemo/pred treatment?
@behumanbekind
@behumanbekind Год назад
I asked a vet a similar question recently (giving my dog an antibiotic to heal a wound and prednisone to suppress his immune system at the same time seemed contradictory). She explained the dosage also matters. It was only contradictory in principle, in reality they weren't cancelling each other out (in our instance).

Dr. Sue, my 3.5 month Morkie puppy was diagnosed with a very small mast cell tumor on the edge of his nose (maybe 1/2 cm). The vet removed the tumor last week & we are waiting on pathology to confirm what grade it is & if they got it all with a clean margin. The Vet's concern was, that because it was on the edge of his nose, they didn't want to take too much off or they would have to cut into his nose. If it is comes back that the tumor is grade 1 or 2, do you think we should definitely have radiation done? thanks so much for your very informative videos.

My dog , she has skin’s cancer and she carried the big tumor outside of skin under her belly. It was little small but not now. She got cut by groomer from that area and it started not healing and grow bigger til today . Yesterday, I try to help her put the gauze to cover it up cause i can’t stand to see it keeps bigger and fall down like that and then she was itching felt uncomfortable and tried to scratch and chewed it and OMG i looked back and saw all the blood flow out from it . I didn’t know what to do , I’m so frustrated and my uncle called the vet might to put her down and surgery but we concern about if the surgery can work on her cancer stage or not. I was crying so much and don’t want to put her down cause she still can eat can run around like normal just that tumor’s wound is a big problem. So we decided to call the vet and cancel and move the appointment to the next week let give her one week to treat it at home. I try to look up all the wound healing medicines and i found Vetericyn Plus Antimicrobial Pet Wound & Skin Hydrogel and antibiotic ointment might be can help her a little bit. I don’t know if it will heal or not ? Is there any ways to save her without the surgery, Mrs. Doctor ? Please read my comment and let me know so I can be prepare for everything. I've done a ton of research on MCTs because we're going through this right now too...and my dog's tumor is adjacent to his penis so I can relate to your concern. However, we've been going to a specialist facility and the surgeon discussed "proportionate margins" which Dr. Sue briefly mentioned in this video and I've also read about. More recent research has said that a margin that is about the same size as the tumor (unless it's really huge) can be just as effective as larger margins. So have hope in that (assuming it's not too big at this point.) Even without clean margins, radiation or chemo can address the rest. Look into ECT (electrochemotherapy) which is super effective after 1-2 treatments after surgery has been performed. Also, Stelfonta might be an option for you too. And, barring all that, the biggest factor is what grade the tumor is. If it's low/medium, you have a lot to be hopeful for. Just a side note, was it a biopsy or just an aspiration? Usually the biopsy is done as part of the surgery. A flare-up from an aspiration is normal because MCTs have histamine in them and can cause an allergic reaction. (Be sure not to be squeezing the tumor or fussing with it because it can continue to spread histamine in the system). Per my vet to us and what I've read, your dog should be on Benedryl until surgery or whatever path you choose. LMK if you have questions or want a link to the proportionate margin study.
@CampamochaLoka

@@l.p.9568 thank you. The biopsy was done at her primary doctors. We realized the next day it had tripled in size the following morning we took her back. That’s when they told me her results from her blood and biopsy that it could it be a mast cell tumor. I set up the appointment with the oncologist which is this Friday. She began to throw up and refused to eat so we took her to the ER the following day. They ran tests on her and said they believed it might have spread to her liver and spleen. They couldn’t confirm unless they would have to keep poking her. They said it was a possibility it could flare up like the one under her rib cage. They prescribed prednisolone, over the counter acid reducer, Benadryl and Gabapentin. The fluids and steroids they gave her must have helped because when we got her home she finally ate and drank water. She’s been on a protein diet. She’s never liked vegetables so I’m unsure how to get her to eat them.

I'm dealing with a very large, open tumor on my dog. It opened early December and is still growing. Vet was ZERO help. paid over $100 to be told to do an actual biopsy would be another $500. (But they knew it was fibrosarcoma already?) From what I've learned: DO NOT USE alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. I've been using Wound Wash. It's available at Walmart in a can for about $6. I go through a can a week..but it seems to not sting very much, if at all. I've placed in warm water prior to use so it won't be so cold and that helped. It's highly recommendedto use antibiotics ointment. I smear a thin layer onto a non-stick gauze pad, followed by more pads behind the first, if thin. Then I wrap up with gauze roll or bandage wrap (stretchy cloth, with velcro end to secure it) on top I put a layer of soft plastic wrap around outside to keep all dry and hold off everything being chewed apart within moments. Hope that helps a little. please let me know if any of my advice is believed to be more harmful than good. *I would LOVE to go to the vet, but there is NO WAY to afford it. if the next move would cost around $500....I'd find a way. But that's not what they said. They didn’t even touch on the cost of removal. They didn't even give any pain antibiotics medication or ANYTHING. just an invoice to do a biopsy. yet no invoice for that days vet visit until days later, even though we had to pay before leaving? I'm open to any constructive input.

I have to unsubscribe not because I don’t like you, I love you! But it’s. Trigger for me to see videos pop up because my dog died from mast cell cancer snd another from splenic hsa. Keep doing your thing though Dr Sue

@@DrSueCancerVet please know it’s not you causing distress, just seeing the words do. Honestly you were a pillar of strength to me in my time of need. I’m just a bit more fragile atm

Thanks for never actually getting to the point of showing anything useful. Glad that you took the time to try but without ever showing any examples it never really did much to help.
